Hearts of Stone

50th of Ashan, Arc 717

The Hallen den Jeger. It was the first massive stop between Uthaldria and the farming communities of Shirnrad, and equally, it was somewhere he'd heard was capable of dealing with monster-inspired afflictions. Beneath him was his warmount and - when not transformed into a monster - lover, Fridadon, the massive Trachadon far larger than any of their species, as well as a vial of black ooze he'd managed to recover from the spectral apparition.

As the two came upon the large fort within the Gauthrelian forests, Alistair dismounted from the beautiful beast and patted it on the stomach from its side. "Come on, Fridgar," he instructed the man to follow further. Immediately upon reaching the gate of the Hall, several Lotharro stepped from both the battlements of the fort and the treeline with Nirnbone Longbows aimed at both of them.

"Makh aft she'kal dron!" they yelled. It meant state your purpose here, though Alistair didn't know that. He only recognized here... your... you're here? Your something here?

"Leave your weapons here?" he asked in Common, brows raised.

"No, fucker!" one yelled back, a thick accent covering his voice. "You be here," the Lotharro yelled. "But why? You not Jeger," he said. Several of them stared upon the Trachadon, wondering how a human had managed to tame one by his lonesome, especially one so large. It was possible, to them, that he was a Bonde skilled in beast taming - though they were entirely unsure.

"Do any among you speak Common, fluently?" the Baron asked.

"Not here," the man replied. "Not outside. In Hall, yes. But you no let in," he said, followed with several curse words in Haltunga, each of them causing for his brethren to laugh. Their laugh... was abnormal. They sounded like Hyenas, like inhuman beasts - they had embraced their animal more than their man. It was utterly fascinating.

"You go now, hoo-man. Fuck off."

The pair had travelled far, even further with Fridgar being unable to transform. The stiffened spot on his back had been turned to stone partially, it prevented him from transforming. As such, he'd stayed in the form of the trachadon for all the journey and he was starting to get some weird thoughts. For instance, he'd had the urge to dig up a hole in the ground with his tusks and call it his home, had the urge to sharpen his tusks against great rocks and the urge to breed his beloved thoroughly. Perhaps the last one was just him though, trachadon mating season didn't come around in Ymiden.

When at last they arrived at the gates, Fridgar's back had become sore. Not because he'd had to carry Alistair the whole way, god no. Alistair was weightless on his colossal form, the spot on his back had made movement difficult, it took a lot of grit and determination to get to where they were. Thankfully, the walls of the fort weren't too high, he would be able to step over them if he was careful. Unfortunately, they didn't even get that far before the jeger stepped out, long bows aimed at them.

Fridgar rolled his neck, clicking the joints as the pair came to a halt. When Alistair's voice came from below him, he looked with concern. How long had Alistair dismounted him for? Fridgar stayed silent but analysed the conversation. 'state your (x) here' What had he said? It almost sounded like fruit; Shek, though Fridgar remained unsure if he was asking for fruit or not. It was more than likely that he wanted something else, considering the hostility. Alistair tried reasoning while Fridgar saved his ether. When the Lothar continued to speak in common, Fridgar could put together that She'kal meant purpose? Reason? One of the two.

Their conversation continued in broken common, though Fridgar grew angrier by the trill. Then, the prick that stood in front of the other men told his beloved to fuck off. Fridgar was seeing red. Fridgar stepped forward a couple of paces, shaking the ground, even managing to throw a couple of them off balance for a split trill. The arrows all raised at him in unison, aiming for his pin-point eyes. Utilising echo, he took the speech of his Fridgar totem and spoke in Haltunga; "I becomer, you cunt," the deep voice came aggressive, booming across the fields from the body of the beast, though its mouth failed to move.

A few of the Jeger looked at one another before letting loose their arrows. Fridgar had been prepared, however, he'd latched onto a pocket of ether with his mind’s eye and used chasing to bring himself toward it in a blink. The arrows flew over where he'd been just trills before impact. Fridgar now stood at their side. He raised onto his hind legs, looking into the air before casting another blink, taking him forty feet into the sky in front of them at Alistair's side. He let his weight loose, falling toward the floor with his four colossal paws ready to catch himself.

Before anyone of the Jeger could react, Fridgar impacted the floor in a massive impact, shaking the ground in such a violent way that all the hunters before them were knocked clean off their feet and into the dirt. If Alistair hadn't reacted fast enough, he would have been knocked away also. While the lot of them scrambled, searching for their weapons, Fridgar pressed the edge of his enormous tusk into the leader, pressing him to the floor with tremendous weight and strength. "You shoot, he kill," he spoke in haltunga once more. He might have forgotten the reason they came here in the first place.

The Trachadon became their target. No one spoke to the Jegers with disrespect, within their own territory among their own fortifications. They would damage him - that was the conclusion they all came to. Remind him of what they were, here, among their brethren: a coalition of the greatest.

Fridgar was impressive, regardless. As they aimed to lodge arrows into his eyes, back and shoulders, he disappeared in a flash. A ripple and tear resounded through the air, and before an instant, it did again. He appeared much higher in the air, plummeting straight to the ground. Alistair nearly had a panic attack, seeing Fridgar rapidly falling from the sky, but quickly pulled himself to the side of a high tree with a rapid and pin-point blink. After appearing, he lodged Shadowsong deep into the tree, holding onto the edge and attempting to swing himself forward. Pulling himself back, he used the momentum to curl his body over the spear, his chest now laying against the incredibly durable shaft of the weapon as he observed the commotion.

The Jegers had been knocked down by the massive boom, which sent the tree Alistair lodged into shaking and in danger of falling over. A Trachadon was a weighty beast, and Fridgar especially. The impact of him falling from so high had caused a shockwave for hundreds of meters around, and the nearest Jeger had only barely been able to recover from the impact. One of them held onto his brother's weight, seemingly unable to walk on his own. Did his ankles fracture? It looked like it, from where Alistair had perched onto.

Fridgar, in front of the gate, had pressed one of the Jegers against the floor with his tusks. It was the one who told Alistair to fuck off.

You shoot, he kill, he said. Alistair's Haltunga had gotten good enough to understand that, at least, though he wasn't entirely sure if such threats - or actions - were a good idea. This whole thing was turning into a mess; they couldn't make enemies with the Jegers, certainly not right outside of their doorstep. This was a group of the absolute best, and in the coming moments, they would show that.

From the trees, and seemingly nowhere at that, two Jeger leapt down from two branches on each side of the gate. Between both of them was a massive Submission Chain, which they flung forward in unison. As they hit the ground, the Chain slid inches from Fridadon's face before skidding along the tip of his tusks, centimeters from digging into their fellow Jeger. Once the Chain was in place, the two men - who had landed easily on their feet - pulled back and flung the Chain back against the creature's tusks, ripping into the bone and swiping the tusks clean off were Fridgar to resist. Other Jegers came behind him with two Shellshatter Harpoons, and flung both of them forward, each slamming into Fridgar's hind legs and crushing through the skin and bone. He would be totally crippled before long, as Jeger rushed from the gate with a metallic chain. It was zirconium, and between the six men holding it, would be more than enough to restrain the Trachadon entirely.

Restrain, though. Not kill. They knew it was a Becomer, not a monster. Fridgar would answer to them the way that men did.

"Soh kol visheny homan?!" one yelled. Where is the human?

Another pointed at Alistair, curled against his spear's shaft lodged into a tree. From below, one of the Lothar gestured for the man to return to them.

Alistair had two choices before him: fight, and get them both killed or worse, or be diplomatic to ensure the safety of his lover. The choice was as clear as day, and so he came. Gripping onto the spear, he blinked before them, his chest leaning into his spear with his knees pressed into the floor. Alistair lowered his head, taking a breath.

"I speak Common," one of the Lotharro said. He appeared much more imposing than all of them - he had dark brown hair in a top-knot, with a light beard along his jaw, tied into another knot of similar appearance to Fridgar's. His armor was a thick leather, and coated with a weave of Terrendyte chain. He was incredibly well-muscled, an athletic build complimenting his clear focus on mobility and agility. The man was tall, and along his armor were many weapons: Nirnbone Longbow, Terrendyte Sword, Terrendyte Daggers, Zirconium Arrowheads along his waist and more arrows in his quiver...

He was clearly a skilled warrior, and certainly high ranked. "My name is Roynar von Sidhe, son of the Jackal, Ganren. I am Packmaster of these Jegers, and the one who will be handing out judgment to the fallen warrior we see before us," he stated. "Since the beast is clearly free from reason, I ask you to explain why you came. From what I've been told, you came to speak, and after a few... insults... this creature here instigated an attack from our men. This is correct?"

"Yes," Alistair replied. The mage stood up straight, and buried his spear into the ground. "Let me emphasize, however, that it was your men that attacked first. Where we come from, bloodshed is not a punitive measure, it's a declaration of battle. He reacted the only way he could have, and did not kill your man when he was clearly capable of doing so. He wanted to cease the exchange of blows." That, to Alistair, seemed proof alone that they were in the right. They hadn't come to fight, but they were forced to do so.

The Jeger began speaking to his men, inquiring as to whether Alistair's story was accurate. They nodded, answering honestly.

"I see," the Packmaster spoke. "Well, I think the Becomer has suffered more than enough, then." He raised his hand, and within moments, all of the Hunters dispersed with their weapons and tools. Fridgar was left damaged and on the ground, but no longer restrained. "Why did you come?" Roynar asked.

"We were attacked by a Soraanar," Alistair stated bluntly. The Jeger's brow rose.

"And you lived?" he inquired, to a nod from the nobleman.

"We lived. In fact, we managed to injure him, and the spirit fled. But -- it touched Fridgar's back, and turned parts of it to stone, other parts stiffened flesh. He can't turn back from this form," the mage explained. The Jeger's thumb stroked his chin, genuinely perplexed, and deeply fascinated. He motioned again, and within moments, the Jeger were convening to haul Fridadon into the fortress.

"We will examine his affliction. We have heard of it before, to be honest. The last man was one of the Bonde, living in... Aedirn, if I recall," he looked upward, in thought. "He died from it. The petrification sent him into a state of sleep, one from which he never returned. After a few dozen trials, his heart failed to beat. It is lucky that your man was assuming the form of a great beast - he would have surely lost his life if not."

Alistair nodded, biting his lip. "I see," he replied. "This has only happened once before?" he asked, witnessing the Jegers bring his lover over to the gate. The mage was beginning to panic, witnessing his bloodied hind legs scrape against the grass and dirt. He had to remain calm, though. He had to be there when they examined Fridgar - there was no evidence that the Jegers cared primarily for his mate's best interests. What if they dissected him?

"Well, only once partially. Many others were petrified completely. It's the work of a particular Soraanar - we call him Kerad Reyn, Stone King. There are many others, with different skills. I--" he paused. "Look, I'm impressed that you managed to fight Kerad Reyn and survive. I'm skeptical, but impressed. However, you're not a Lotharro, not a Clansman, not a member of any Path, not marked by the Creator, and you don't even speak Haltunga. You're a foreigner. I can't allow you any more information, nor can I let you into the fort. I'm afraid you'll have to leave your man to us," the Jeger stated.

"No," Alistair replied, biting his lip. "I'll join you, if that's what it takes. I'm one of the greatest fighters you'll ever see. Just let me inside."

Meanwhile, Fridgar had been dragged through the gate. His small circular eyes would open to a vast community of Jegers, armorers and medics waiting patiently by the doors, whilst domicile training grounds and an indoor forest decorated the center of his view. There were many, many men, with many conversations. Most of them, though, were fighting. Sparring. Simulating.

"You," one of the Lotharro called to him. "You have Path, big man? Name? Clan? We'll have tell them if you die. Probably will."

Fridgar stood near enough to the point of impact. What he hadn't realised before was that the area surrounding him had rippled slightly, almost like a crater. The impact had been so devastating that it was imprinted on the ground, perhaps for seasons to come. Troops all around were downed, even wounded. He would have panicked for the safety of his beloved if he couldn't feel his presence to the left, nestled in a tree. Fridgar held the one that had spoken out against Alistair to the ground by his tusk firmly. It wouldn't be so easy for the other Lotharen to break him off either.

If they somehow killed him, all his weight would sink into his tusk and split the Lothar he held in half. Unfortunately for the unaware Trachadon, jeger had snuck around to his sides while he watched the archers. A submission chain found itself lassoing his tusk. Despite being hundreds of times smaller than he, the Lothar manning the chain strained his tusk to near-enough breaking point. Whatever they'd been eating, it was working wonders for them. He was forcefully pulled aside, allowing his prisoner time to escape. Fridgar reached for him with his broad trunk, missing completely to watch the Lothar scamper off with his tail between his legs.

The pain in his tusk only served to spur on his sudden bout of rage. Never. Never would he allow himself to be taken prisoner again, not after Andaris. They would take him dead or not at all. Snarling viciously, the Lothar pulled at the submission chain and snapped a good half of his tusk off. A roar heralded that he was pissed as he caught himself following the pull. His head shook side to side as he tried to pull his other tusk up, he was lopsided. Massive feet stomped the ground as he tried to pull himself up, among them were the shouts of jeger, issuing commands at one another.

His hind legs would explode with agony as foreign objects pierced them both and sent him to the dirt. Fridgar roared once more, pulling forward with his front legs before locking onto a nearby pocket of ether and chasing it in the form of a blink. In the space that he manipulated, the chains of the harpoons would be severed, the upper half would transport with him while the jeger were left with their useless pieces of broken equipment. Fridgar would re-appear, supporting himself against the wall of the jeger encampment while gathering his breath. His pinpoint eyes would fall upon his beloved, checking if he were okay... to find him doing nothing.

Very well, it was up to him to get them out of this mess. Fridgar would open a compression portal a good kilometre away and open one just feet from his breaking form. Raising one of his paws, he would connect the two with a faint strain on his brain, though it amounted to nothing like the pain in his hind legs. When at last it was done, Fridgar pushed his body forward, nearing the blazing surface of the portal with the edge of his good tusk. He hadn't checked if the portal were safe or not, but he didn't care. Death was better than imprisonment for trials before being executed publicly. Dragging his hind legs behind him, he pushed his tusk into the portal. It felt okay, though it was difficult to tell with just bone.

More of the facial weapon sank into the fire-coloured tear in the fabric of space as he struggled. In the meantime, the jeger had positioned themselves between him and his fiancé. Using fresh shell-shatter harpoons, they blasted him once more with unwavering prejudice. One would plant itself in his frontal right leg, shattering the bone and tearing through the stone skin with ease while the other lodged in his side, rupturing organs on its way through, breaking the other side of his skin. It had been unhindered by bone, so travelled all the way through his thick frame. A gasp of icy air filled his lungs, a contrast to the burning pain throughout his destroyed body.

He wasn't finished yet, there was still a chance he could live, even if there was no way he could walk anymore. Fridgar cast his mind’s eye to another pocket of ether, focusing on it before pulling himself there with another blink. His bloodied body would skid briefly across the rippled grass before he toppled, landing on his side. The tusk that had entered the portal was gone, the portal he'd tried to enter was unstable, though he didn't notice. A weakened growl left the maw of the beast as it tried to stand itself up, shaking on its front paws with the massive strain. Meanwhile, his back legs couldn't even move anymore.

No matter how hard he tried to stand, the jeger would rush toward him, weapons at the ready. That was it. In all his endurance and evident masochism, he couldn't take anymore. Fridgar collapsed on his broken legs, damaging his form further. Completely and utterly crippled with agony and injury, his vision began to blur and darken. Reviewing the whole fight in his head, they had insulted his beloved, Fridgar threw a single insult back, they tried to kill him with powerful bows through the eyes, he knocked them all to the floor more-or-less harmlessly, they butchered and mangled him in return.

He saw three positives as his consciousness teetered and tottered; He was the good guy in this situation, Alistair would surely have enough time to get away, and he wouldn't likely live long with these injuries. Either way, a repeat of Andaris wasn't likely. Darkness claimed him, smothering his vision and breathing into a dreamless sleep.
Immediately, his portals closed. His body would still breath, though his eyes stayed shut as the jeger went about hauling him onto whatever device they used to bring him into the walls of the encampment. Very occasionally, his eyes would flutter open and his body would shift a little as it tried to pick itself up, only to collapse again in trills.
Flashes of the world outside went by between massive intervals of darkness. Fridgar could see his beloved, speaking with the apparent leader of the jeger while his body shifted from point A to point B. Then he saw a packed village of armourers and medics, warriors alike. The clash of weapons was muffled in his ears, though still distinct. Opening his eyes would reveal another lothar, standing above him speaking in broken common. His head would drop and his maw would part, making way for the low growl of the trachadon, unsteady and near death. Darkness claimed him once more, edging him into a deeper sleep.

It was a tragedy to witness his mate hunted and damaged to such a degree. He continued to resist, as he always did, fighting desperately against submission regardless of whatever face presented it as an option. It didn't matter. He tried - he failed. Fridgar was an astounding warrior, forcing a whole Pack of Jegers to pursue him with a variety of unique weapons specifically designed to subdue his current form. Even with the petrification of his back, he elicited an incredibly vicious and collaborated assault from the Jegers, who would have been bested by him if not for their exceptionally large group.

It was moments like this, and in the altercation with Kerad Reyn, that Alistair recognized what a powerful man his lover was. Yet, for the sake of keeping Fridgar alive, he couldn't help him now. Notably, as he speak to Royand, his focus was incredibly diminished. Alistair could only stare at his mate by his peripheral and watch him so hurt. What if he died? One of the last things that happened between the two was... Alistair yelling at him, infuriated, for something so small.

No. He couldn't let him die. The mage's arms rose to the air in an upper-cut like motion, and portals ripped in the trajectory of the shellshatter harpoons. They instead appeared somewhere else, bashing through grass and dirt whilst his lover - prevented the unnecessary damage - slowly faded into unconsciousness.

"That's enough, don't you think?" the mage asked, looking to the belligerent Jegers with a glare. He didn't care that Fridgar was resisting - this was their aggravation in the first place, all because they couldn't stomach an insult. The mage grimaced.

Royand signaled for them to stop. Tranquilizing darts, instead of harpoons, were injected into the Trachadon's thick flesh. The result was the same, only with far less injury and bloodshed. Alistair allowed himself to relax slightly more - though not enough. He was... incredibly anxious, and desperate to be let inside.

"In exchange for the hardship, and with your interest in joining stated, we'll allow you to attend to your lover from within his confine," the man said, gesturing for Alistair to follow the group that had detained Fridgar. The mage eagerly did so, rushing to his mate's side as his last visions flickered before him while the tranquilizer's effects fully set in.

"Fridgar," Alistair whispered to his mate, "I love you. I love you. I'm so sorry for not fighting them - it was for us. I'm gonna get you treated, and I'm gonna fix this. Just wait for me, my love. I won't let you die."

Fridgar had not, in fact, been hit by the second pair of harpoons, he might have imagined it or something. Seeing things wasn't too uncommon while on the verge of death and miserable agony. The tranquillisers didn't help either, pushing his conscious mind into darkness, twisting his thoughts. From what he could gather, Alistair had been the one to save him, but the jeger had definitely tried to impale him all the way through. What a bunch of assholes, what did the two of them even do to-?

Fridgar fell asleep.

Even in his enormous form, the tranquillisers were beyond potent. It was a struggle to climb back to consciousness, but snippets of the outside world still flooded his dreams. The cunt Lothar that commented on his approaching demise, his beloved Alistair staying by his side, the village of warriors and medics. If Fridgar could remember the face of the one that had said he would probably die, Fridgar would be more than happy to pay him a visit when he was conscious again.

As Alistair spoke his support, the beast groaned very lightly. A soft rumbling that echoed from his inflating and deflating chest. He was in no state to speak through his echo, even if it were still active. The most he could muster as a reply were bestial groans of pain and confusion.

Fridgar, your boxcode made me chuckle! An intense and interesting read but I would really ask that you include links to things which are specific (eg: submission chains, for example) or just a quick description of what they do as part of the post. Makes it so much easier, if you could! Thanks. Was really interesting to read this thread - I enjoyed the struggle and the dilemma for Ali. In with the feels!

Looking forward to finding out what happens next!
