Mixology 101: Flavor is Everything

Image
Ymiden 28 704, Late Evening

Location: The Bronze Boar

The young Rharnian had only recently been hired on into the venturous world of alcohol, even though he's had plenty of practice with the drinking aspect already. Being a bartender was quite different in comparison since he was required to pour the drinks, not simply drink from the mugs and glasses they were poured into. Daveth had honestly been a bit of a hard ass often since Patrick tended to be slow, if not lazy in regards to keeping the bar tidy enough in his standards as well. Quite often the Rharnian had a lot on his mind, far too much to distract him when it came to serving the drinks. Often during the earlier parts of the evening he'd be caught flirting with the ladies, just before getting them their drinks so that he might get a tip or two in profit.

Now that the bar had slowed down in activity and many of the locals had gone home, Daveth spent the rest of his evening cleaning the upstairs where the brawl ring was. Meanwhile Patrick finished wiping down the counter tops, finally, of the bar as the last few remaining customers enjoyed their drinks. In that time Pat perused the selection of drinks that were available, a little curious as to what all he could throw into a single drink. He had yet to consider the practice of mixology, but if he planned to go far in the business of alcohol; then naturally he was required to be well acquainted... with the many flavors available at his disposal.

"Plenty of wine... Koriel could be a good start." He murmured as he pulled out a bottle recently opened earlier that night off the shelf, the half filled wine bottle rested next to a clean flagon as he browsed for another selection to throw into the mix. Shimmering Koriel definitely looked strange but the taste, if he recalled, was rather sweet and delicious in comparison. So if he found something to throw that in with the mix, probably something tangy or fruity, then maybe the two would blend into a tasteful concoction someone else could enjoy. He pulled one out to glance at it with a contemplative stare, a brief shake of his head in disapproval when he read Kuwasa sprawled on the parchment label. Not the Sparkling White either... Hm... What could go well with Koriel?

He tugged another bottle halfway out to look and see the name "Appiden" next, a quite "Oo" uttered from his lips as he pulled the bottle the rest of the way out. With the cork popped out he took a whiff of the immense aroma contained, the intense smell of ripe pears and apples filled his nostrils from the lip of the bottle. Strong. Very much so in fact, something that deemed worth trying in his little creative endeavor. Patrick took rested the opened bottle next to his first choice, the Koriel first to be tilted and poured at the bottom of the flagon. He filled it only a fraction of a quarter pint, before he placed the bottle back down and reached for the other next. This time he poured more until the flagon seemed to contain that quarter, as the mixture within seemed to bubble intriguingly while he slowly pivoted the tincture. Already he could smell the rich potent flavor of sweetened ripe apple, while the beverage in the container took a more golden amber color.

He smiled a little triumphantly even though it was just a little bit of a throw together, nothing real in comparison to some of the other drinks Daveth could probably brew or mix. He took a glass from the shelf and poured his mixture within, the cup filled almost to the brim as that golden wine bubbled deliciously in the container.

Mixology 101: Flavor is Everything

Rather smugly Patrick placed the flagon down and admired his work, a little too proud over the drink he just managed to mix together. Now all he had to do was give it a name and drink it, enjoying the beverage in it's first and foremost glory! What should he call it though? It was a mix of Shimmering Koriel and Appiden so... Shimmering Appiden! Easy enough. With a grin he eager gripped the glass and raised it, carefully, to his lips as the aroma wafted into his nose. That ripe aromatic scent was so damn alluring to his nose, it tickled his sense of smell as he brought the glass to his lips. With a tilt he allowed the smooth wine to wash inside, his mouth full of the beverage as he took a rather large 'sample' of the drink. It was good except...

After the initial moment where the wine settled on his tongue, that scented and savory aroma wasn't as appealing in taste. In fact it was quite overpowering to where he jetted it back out, spewing the wine all over the bar he'd just wiped clean as the extreme tart flavor settled. That had to have been due to the pear, something he didn't take into account since already the Koriel already had a hint of tartness to it. The few customers that sat at tables laughed, clearly amused by the reaction Patrick had after tasting the, evidently, horrible concoction he just created now. He wagged his tongue with a disgust grimace, the mug of cider he'd slowly drank from earlier used to help wash out the residual after taste.

Never again.

Though a promising combination it was quite clear that Koriel and Appiden had a bit too much tartness to mix together. Therefore with little further regard spent on the mix, he placed it on a part of the bar left dry after his immediate spray. With the same damp wash cloth from earlier taken, he began wiping down the mess he created. Such a shame. A very promising drink turned out to be a waste, all because the Shimmering Koriel and Appiden created to intense of a tartness. The door to the Boar's entrance opened to let in a Lightning Knight, as Pat could easily recognize the outfit from his peripheral vision. Yet when he looked up from his near complete task, he couldn't help but smile as he noticed just who it was. Dominek.

"Evenin' brother."

Evenin' brother." The older sibling returned with his own grin as he took a seat at the bar, his elbows pressed into the wood as he leaned just a little. "What's this? He had pointed to the glass Pat had left alone, clearly curious about it since the drink was all by it's lonesome.

At first Patrick thought to just outright tell him nothing special, and that it was something he needed to dispose of. But... Somehow the moment was too good of an opportunity to pass up. The little brother couldn't help but smile as he dropped the rag down on the surface of the wood, his arms folded into a cross over as he too leaned onto the bar. "Shimmering Appiden." He mused with a wry smile, his older brother looking at him peculiarly. "It's just a mixed drink I thought would be interesting."

"Yeah, no kiddin'." Dominek mused with a intrigued startle at the smell. "It's very uh... punctual."

"Very. You can have it actually, I've got cider over here. Daveth would kill me otherwise if I wasted it." Patrick reasoned as he watched Dominek tilt the glass, far higher than Patrick ever would've dared to be exact. At the moment he started to guzzle the Knight's eyes narrowed and then popped wide open, the glass pulled back as he about choked on the beverage. "Oh and it's very tart. Forgot to mention that as well." He teased with a short chuckle, a little surprised Dom didn't spit it out either.

"Now you tell me?! Asshole." The older sibling jeered as he he looked from Patrick to the amber glass, which was now only half filled since the man took a gulp or two. "Y' know you could kill somebody with this drink. Might want to reconsider the name if not the vintage instead."

"Nah, I'm sure it'll grow on someone. There's bound to be some miserable Mer-footed Napper or Thunderhead with shit taste that'll drink it." He answered back with a bit of a laugh, Dominek naturally joined alongside the brief bit of mirth with a tilt of his head.

"One can only hope." He looked past his shoulders up the stairs, probably curious about Daveth and what he was up to. "So aside from making lousy drinks, you settling in well so far?"

"Lousy? Now that just hurts my feelings big brother."

"Oh you have feelings? I couldn't tell, must be the 'Shimmering Appiden' I just drank." He arguably teased with the glass sat back down, his eyes mostly on Patrick as the little brother.

"Touche. It's been an adjustment but I'm handling it." Patrick answered with a shrug, his eyes narrowed on Dominek however. "You're gonna finish that right?"

"That?" Dominek pointed at the drink in question. "Noooo. No." The denial was amusing to watch, as Dom definitely seemed bewildered at just the memory of drinking that.

"C'moooon. Why don't you just... chug it. Y' know like you always do with your drinks." Dominek scoffed a bit of a chuckle at that comment.

"I don't chug little brother, I enjoy my alcohol thank you."

"Fair," Patrick shrugged with another wry grin, "Why not 'enjoy' it so I don't have to waste it then." At that note Dominek sighed, clearly more willing to drink it than he let on.

"Only on one condition," the Knight insisted as his fingers wrapped around the glass again, "you never make this shoddy glass of piss again."

Patrick couldn't help but chuckle a little more at the playful insult, another shrug given to his brother as he reached for his own cider. "Deal." He agreed with it raised towards Dominek, the Lightning Knight tapped the glass against the mug in the form of a cheers; and thus the both of them proceeded to gulp down their beverages. Only Pat had the luxury of watching, and almost choking due to imminent laughs, Dom make a fierce grimace over the tart beverage as he consumed it like the champion of Ilaren Her self.

Cute little training thread. Just a note: "punctual" means timely whereas I think you meant to write "pungent" when Pat's brother was sniffing the new drink. Other than that, nice little read. I like seeing mixes of comedy and failure in training threads - makes them feel a little more authentic and enjoyable!
