Vega had never been to school and she wasn't entirely sure what to expect here. Biqaj education was carried out aboard ships and in a very different way than seemed to be the case here. She'd considered bringing her fiddle with her, but had decided against it because she'd signed up for piano lessons. That had been a real difficulty for the young redhead - deciding which lessons to take. The thing was, she honestly wanted to take them all, and it might be that she did. But Vega had decided that she needed to be sensible about it. So, she'd come to the conclusion that she was going to learn the piano first. The reason for that was because they didn't have one, weren't likely to get one and therefore, she'd need to learn it not play around and hope to pick it up. It was, fundamentally, the most inaccessible of the instruments and so, Vega decided that she would splash out, spend a ridiculous amount of money (as she saw it) and pay for the lessons.

She'd been nervous about coming here this morning - although she had absolutely and completely denied that she was to Arlo. He'd teased her mercilessly and had been just deliberately difficult and obnoxious. Or, he'd been supportive and lovely, depending on your point of view she supposed, but Vega didn't doubt that she was right and he'd been vile. She knew better, of course, and she was more than grateful to him for just how supportive he was. But she had a reputation to maintain. Wishing that she'd brought the fiddle with her so that she could at least clutch it to her chest, Vega walked in and looked around, raising an eyebrow at the statue of one Mildred Austere.

"Hello! Can we help you?" The voice of the cheery receptionist broke Vega out of her reverie and she looked over. "Yeah. Um. I've got classes booked with someone called Cecily?" The receptionist smiled, almost as though she was expecting some other information and Vega, who was more nervous than she would ever admit, hit panic and so defended the best way she knew how. "I hope that's not a statue of 'er. Looks like she wouldn't know a good time if it smacked her in the nozzle." Cool eyes regarded her and Vega wondered if this woman might have some special powers to make you sort of... squirm.

"That's a bust of our founder," she said, her voice sweet and charming. "Well, thank all the Immortals for that. She looks like a right barrel of laughs. Any'ow, um. Yeah. So where'd I go?" The receptionist looked at Vega and smiled, slightly. "What's your name, please?"

"Vega. Oh. You want me to pay you? Yeah, here." Once that was dealt with, and the receptionist was much more friendly after she'd taken Vega's money, she got given directions and made her way to the room in question. Music Room 7. That was what it was called and as she walked down the corridor past music rooms 4 and 5, Vega muttered to herself.

"I know it's a straightforward system an' all, but there's got to be somethin' to be said for surprises." But no. After Music Room 6, there it was and she lifted her hand and knocked on the door.

After she'd knocked the door, a voice called out for her to come in and Vega did just that. "Wotcha," she said and smiled. "I'm Vega an' I'm here for a lesson in piano?" The woman, Cecily, turned to look at the student who had just walked in and she adopted an air of irritated immediately. Cecily looked at Vega and immediately labelled her as rough-looking, common and coarse. She had no need, wish or desire for a student who would, undoubtedly, be a complete waste of her time and talents. "First. You will address me as mistress Cecily." She said, not stopping as she saw Vega's eyebrows lift. "Secondly, we are here to learn, not socia..."

Vega, it must be said, had no intention whatsoever of letting her get any further. She stepped forward with the intention of making sure that the woman in the floaty head-dress thing didn't misunderstand anything and heard it all. But Vega was just short of six foot tall, muscular and obviously irritated. Cecily stopped talking and took a step back. Vega didn't notice. "RIght, well, lets be clear. No, I won't. I'm not callin' you mistress nothin' unless you call me Her Royal Majesty. Jog on, love. An' no, for the record, we aren't here to learn. I'm here to learn an' you, love, are here to teach. I know this, 'cos I handed over my nels an' at least of few of them are gonna be headed your way. So. Cecily. I'm here to learn piano. You up to that?"

It was rare that someone's sheer physical presence unnerved Cecily, but Vega's did. That did not bother Vega in the slightest, she had no interest in someone trying to bully her. Cecily considered and looked at her. "A..and will all five sessions be in piano? Would you like to learn the violin?" Vega shook her head. "I can already play the fiddle," Cecily looked utterly horrified at the use of the word fiddle, but she motioned to some violins in the room. "Indulge me?" Vega glanced and smiled, always happy to play and she moved over, running her hands over the instruments laid on a table and choosing the one which felt right. Then, once she'd chalked her bow, she lifted it and, as the violin in her hands, an instrument of far superior quality to the one she had, started to glow with the light of her Nalos mark, Vega began to play. The difference in the sound was incredible and she closed her eyes in delight. Cecily, however, watched transfixed.

When Vega lowered the instrument, she looked at it longingly. "That's a beautiful fiddle, it really is," she said and Cecily looked at her in surprise. "How long have you played?" Vega shrugged. "Not very long. Few seasons. Papa's brother was a genius with music, apparently. But yeah, I wanted to jus' focus on the piano, cos I'm not gonna be able to play it anywhere but here, really."

There was something fundamental about Cecily and that was that, simply put, she liked anyone with a talent. This woman had one, so, she motioned to one of the three pianos in the room. "Sit there. Your back should be straight and your elbows at a right angle, like so, when you put your fingers on the keys. Show me." Vega nodded and sat.

Putting her fingers on the keys, the young biqaj frowned slightly as she pressed one. "That's a beautiful sound. Rich an' deep. It sounds like strings, though?" Cecily smiled and nodded. "It is. In a way. I'll show you inside once we have begun. First, though, the pedals." Vega looked down and raised an eyebrow. "There's three things down there. I didn't know that!" Cecily smiled and ignored the harsh, to her ears, accent and coarse manner of speaking. Suddenly, they were endearing. "Indeed. Let's begin."

"Like this?" Vega had her hands on the keys and they had automatically moved to rest in a certain way. This had pleased Cecily enormously. "Yes. Each finger is on a key. Your right thumb is on middle c , the left is reversed and one octave down." Vega looked up and asked what she would always ask when faced with that question. "What's an octave?" Cecily asked, could she read music and Vega said yes, she could. So, then, it was a group of eight notes, A to G, Cecily explained and Vega looked down at her hands. "So these two keys between my thumbs are A an' B, then?" Cecily nodded her head.

"Tell me, Vega, if you will, it will help me to teach you," Cecily said. "Explain how you learned the violin?"

Vega stopped and turned to look at Cecily, but her teacher motioned for her to stay where she was, getting used to the feeling of her hands and arms in that position. She scooched back around and then spoke. "I'd broken my legs an' I was bored. I normally spend my time hittin' things but I couldn't, so my Papa bought me some stuff, to stop me from gettin' bored." Cecily's face was a picture of horrified, yet she said nothing at the moment. "That were the end of Cylus. Well, I tried paintin' but oh by the dregs of Ilaren's washback, I'm crap at it. I mean, like, really." Cecily watched her and she had to suppress a smile at the woman's way of talking.

"An' there was a fiddle in there. An' a book on 'ow to play it. So, I picked it up, me an' my cousin-in-law. She got bored but I felt like," Vega shrugged, feeling more than a little self conscious. "Well, I feel like it's right, you know? I can't explain it better. An' I know it were fast, me learnin', but I couldn't do anythin' else. Arlo had to carry me for nearly half the season." Cecily raised an eyebrow. "Arlo?" It sounded, she thought, like a dog's name. "My fella," Vega said and grinned. "He got the somewhat dubious 'onour of playin' nursemaid with a cantankerous redhead. He never complained, in fairness. Other than that time that I suggested that him an' ... anyhow, yeah. So, I picked it up with a battered old fiddle my Papa got me."

Cecily considered it and she shook her head. It made sense, but she had to admit that Vega seemed to be entirely the most unlikely person to come into her classroom this trial. Still they had five sessions together and so, she smiled and wondered. Was the girl as good with everything, a true prodigy, or was it a one of thing with the violin? They would see. "Well, you have five sessions booked, this is the initial one. If you are as good with the piano as you say you were when learning the violin," Cecily couldn't say she was entirely convinced, there was a bit of her that thought Vega was speaking utter untruth and, in fact, had been learning since she was a young age. But she couldn't prove or disprove that, so she kept her own counsel and waited to see how the lessons unfolded.
