It had been a few days since Wendell had been here fixing up her dilapidated house, and she had cut work to help him. Her windowpane had been sanded and painted to look nearly new. Only the wear on the glass gave away the fact that it wasn’t brand new. Old and broken bricks had been chiseled out and new ones laid down. He had mentioned that broken bricks were a fire hazard, something Rei had never really considered but made sense once it was explained. The air was getting chillier and soon it would be time to stock up on chopped wood and light the fireplace most nights.

The infirmary had slowed down quite a bit, those that had been victims of severe run ins with shadow monsters were the only ones left staying there. Everyone else had recovered well enough to return to their homes. With things so slow, the infirmary had started a certain outreach program, using their own supplies and their own coin to go out to the Dust Quarter and help tend to the sick that ordinarily wouldn’t be able to visit the infirmary and get taken care of.

Rei packed up everything that could be useful- bandages, salves, several herbal powders for common things like pain, sterilization liquid, needle and thread… anything that she could do mobile. It was all in a brown leather sack that she threw over her shoulders. A flowing pleated wine colored cotton skirt fell to her calves and tucked in was a very pale yellow blouse. Her sandy hair was strewn with colorful beads, braids, leather straps, and feathers. Her hide shoes were dusty from walking the streets. The Earth Quarter and Dust Quarter weren’t exactly all cobblestone streets, most of them being streets of packed dirt.

She set out and walked a ways before passing out the city gates and into what some people might refer to as the slums. Dust clouds bounced around, the housing was hardly housing at all, and everyone was in tattered rag clothes. Some were coughing and she thought she heard someone wretch somewhere. Rei heard crying at the first house she approached. She stood there for a moment before knocking. A sniffling woman answered the door, a deep cut on her forehead, a shiner on her life eye, and a busted lip. Behind her was a broken vase, possibly the only ornamental thing there, and what she assumed was a family portrait thrown aside.

“Afternoon, I’m from the infirmary and was wondering if I could patch you up? It won’t take long and won’t cost you a thing.” The woman seemed hesitant, as if she really wanted to just shut the door and not say anything. “Please, miss. That cut really needs to be stitched and I don’t want you to get infected.” With that little bit of persuasion, the woman let her in. Rei had the woman sit in a wooden chair and first worked on sterilizing her bloody wounds. As she worked, she noticed red marks around the woman’s throat and what would come to be bruises on her arm. It wasn’t hard to guess what had happened here.

Once the wounds were sterile, she took a needle and thread and began stitching up the deep cut on her forehead. The woman handled it better than most men she had seen, only wincing and gritting her teeth. When that was done she covered the wounds with salve, got the woman to take a bit of herbal powder for pain, and left some of both with her to take care of herself. The door suddenly burst open and a very drunk, slob of a man came roaring in. He was large, both tall and rotund. His face was purpled with anger as he screamed at timid woman. “What the hell is the meaning o’ this? You got some uptown whore in here tending to poor pitiful Martha?” The woman tried to reason with him, tried to say that Rei was just leaving. Though Rei didn’t want to leave the woman with the abusive man, she thought she might and send a knight to take care of things. But the man wouldn’t let her leave. Unexpectedly he grabbed her by the throat and slammed her into the wall. There was too much space between them for her to hit his groin or reach his eyes. The woman just stood there and screamed as Rei’s vision began to get spotty, her fingers and nails clawing at his arms. He reared back and socked onto straight into her mouth, the taste of blood coming to her. Just when she thought her vision was going to go dark, he moved closer to her, pressing harder, and she was able to grasp his shoulders and drive her knee into his groin. He doubled over and she ran out onto the street.

She had gotten a knight to attend to the situation and left for Wendell's house. Blood had run from her mouth down to the top of her blouse, her lower lip was busted, and there was a coloring around her cheekbone where his fist has impacted her face. She knew she was late and knocked on the door, her hands were trembling. When he opened the door she immediately lied, "I'm fine! It's not as bad as it looks..."

No Good Deed Goes Unpunished

It was late in the afternoon, going on dusk, and Wendell had just been getting ready to head to work at the Harlot ‘n’ Hound when he heard a knock at the door. Odd, he thought, he hadn't been expecting anyone and he hardly ever got visitors. The man looked around the room and threw his hands up at the mess, hoping he could send the door knocker on their way and finish getting ready. The man answered the door in nothing but a pair of black trousers and a leather belt that hung open off his hips.

“Rei!” His face contorted with horror. “What happened?” He didn't believe for a second that she was fine and brought her in off the street to close the door and sit her down in the living room on one of the chairs.

A pot of water was put on to boil over the fireplace and Wendell found a rag to clean and dab away the blood on Rei’s lower lip. His brow knotted with concern as he knelt down on one knee beside her chair and worked carefully. “You're hurt,” he frowned. “Who did this? I'll teach the bloody bastard a lesson!” Wendell started to get fired up and restless, and any thought of going to work had been quickly cast from his mind. “You take me to him right now!”

Rei was utterly relieved to see Wendell, still shaken up by the events that had occurred. She hadn’t expected the woman’s abuser to come storming in, and even if he had, she hadn’t foreseen him taking out his anger on her. She followed Wendell, who looked horrified, inside his home and let him lead her to one of the chairs sitting in his living area. This must not have been the first time Wendell had dealt with the wounds of a beating- he probably took care of his own many times- because he seemed to know what he was doing without much instruction.

Water was put on to boil on the fire, and he was mopping up the blood that was still bubbling on her lip and out of her mouth. “I informed a knight. I don’t know if they did anything about it.” Truthfully she had not lingered long enough to see if the man was reprimanded for his actions against her. Rei hoped for the sake of the man’s wife that they had done something. The drunk was likely to give her hell as mad as he had been. If he was willing to do this much damage to a stranger, what would he do to his wife?

“I was down in the Dust Quarter. We go there sometimes to help out with illness and injuries. Not everyone can go to the infirmary.” She was nervous and rattling off details there weren’t really important or critical to the story of what had actually happened. “The first house… there was a woman. She looked badly beaten. Very deep cut on her forehead, bruised arms, marks on her neck, discolored face. I had just finished patching her up when her drunk husband stormed in. He was angry, so angry, that she was getting helped. He grabbed me by the throat, slammed me against the wall, punched me in the face. I managed to get close enough to hit his groin, it’s how I got away.”

Wendell was angry, the first time she had ever seen him in such a state. His voice was raised and he was demanding that she take him to the brute. Perhaps she should? She wanted to know the woman was alright and had not been beaten to death. “I want to be sure she’s ok. Be careful, he’s drunk.” She stood up, gently taking the rag from Wendell and holding it to her busted lip. “Follow me.”

Wendell pulled on a shirt and dampened down the fire before leaving the house. He followed Rei to the Dust Quarter and when she pointed out the place she had been assaulted, Wendell walked up to the front door and banged on it firmly. When there came no answer he thumped the door again with the edge of his closed fist and called out for someone to answer, his tone of voice suggesting that they best do so in a hurry, or else.

Finally a woman came to the door and opened it just a fraction. “Go away, we are fine,” she insisted. Wendell noticed the chain that kept the door locked and told the woman to step back. She tried to close the door and Wendell threw his hand in the gap, stopping her from doing so.

He stepped back then and rammed the door with his shoulder. It didn't budge from the chain but the shock of the impact saw the woman jump backwards. It was then he raised his boot and stepped back to kick the door in. The first kick yielded no result, just a lot of noise, so he focused his second kick on the weak point of the door right near the chain lock. The force of the kick ripped the chain from the frame, screws and all, and the door swung open and rattled against the wall.

Wendell stormed into the house and the woman on the floor tried to reach for his hand. Her cheek looked busted and she had blood on her shirt. “Where is he?” Wendell asked, but was too impatient to wait around for the answer. He went down the hall and checked two of the rooms before finding the man asleep on the couch, stinking of whiskey and buzz, a deadly mix if ever he had known one. And people wondered why they were so hard done by, he scoffed, they might as well throw their coin into the ocean if all they wanted to do was waste their wage on grog and drugs.

Body flooded with adrenaline and done with sense, Wendell pulled the man away from the sofa by the top of his shirt and threw him towards the fireplace. The drunk fell with a yell, jolted from sleep, and cried out as his hand landed in the fire and the hot coals burned his flesh. Wendell didn't give the drunkard any time to recover, kicking him in the teeth before he could struggle to his feet. The burly stranger rolled around on the floor like a turtle stuck on its back, holding his bleeding mouth.

“You want to raise a hand to my woman!” Wendell spat and kicked the man in the ribs. “I'll fecking kill ya!

They went to the Dust Quarter and Rei didn’t know what to expect with the seething ball of anger that was Wendell. He was like a taut muscle bound up and ready to release at any moment. She hesitated for a moment, wondering if she should even tell him which house it was, but it didn’t appear that the knight she had alerted had done anything to solve the situation. The house was quiet and there was no evidence that they had been disturbed and no extra presence of knights in the area. Knowing she had no choice, she had sighed and shown him the house.

It started off with Wendell banging on the door, trying to get someone to open. When the woman cracked the door and told them to go away, Rei noticed the lilt in her voice that suggested otherwise. She had been crying again. Likely once he had recovered from his groin shot, he had gone after her, likely blaming her for everything that had transpired. The situation devolved quickly and before she knew it, Wendell had forcibly kicked the door in. The knights in the area either didn’t notice, didn’t care, or were purposefully looking the other way. The display was too obvious not to attract some attention.

Almost immediately she was beginning to regret bringing Wendell. He was demanding the location of the husband from the very beaten and timid wife who was doing her best not to burst into tears. Then he was practically ransacking the house looking for the mine. Rei almost hoped he didn’t find him. However the crash of a body against the floor and a howl of pain confirmed that he had been found. She and the woman rushed to the room to find the man on his back, Wendell kicking his teeth and screaming at him with fury.

“Please, stop!” The woman cried, crouching down by her husband who was now profusely bleeding from the mouth. “It was all me fault for letting her in. I can take care of meself, don’t need a healer.” The woman, it seemed, was almost angry with Rei, as if she were the cause of all this madness. “I was just trying to help,” she offered quietly. “And make sure you were ok. And you aren’t. He beat you after I left. You didn’t have that on your cheek when I was here.” The woman shook her head. “Well we’s just grand now aren’t we?” Rei stiffened and glanced over at Wendell. “Maybe we should go?” But what she couldn’t get out of her head was that he had called her my woman.

The drunk cowered against the woman at his side and Wendell backed off, he had delivered his idea of justice, the man would probably be nursing a broken rib or two and some busted teeth for some time. Rei thought it best they leave, and though Wendell felt angry enough to make good on his threat, he thought that she was probably right. A guard could show up at any time or the two strangers might grow too familiar with the look of his face to escape notice in future.

Wendell held his boot against the man's face and leaned forward as the drunk hissed with pain. “You ever touch her or another healer again and I'll be back,” he said lowly before giving a shove with the tread of his boot and backing off. He looked at the battered and beaten woman tending to the man and felt little pity for her or anyone who would protect such a beast. Wendell left the house with Rei and walked her back to her place, closer than his own to where they had come from.

“Do you need me to do anything?” he asked after putting some water on for her and building up the fire. Wendell took the woman's jaw and turned her head with careful coaxing to look at her lip and cheek. His features softened, no longer the angry bull he had been. “I'm sorry he hurt you, I'm sorry you had to see me hurt him.”

Now that she thought about it, she wasn’t sure she had ever seen anyone this mad, much less Wendell, who seemed like such a calm and easy going person. It was almost sweet how defensive he was of her, if not a little scary that he could be so brutal. It was probably good, though, because Rei could get into trouble with her tender heart and need to help the sick and unfortunate. Wendell could protect her from men and people in general that would dare to be so brutal and unkind to such a loving person.

They left with Wendell dishing out a threat, though it was more of a promise, that if he touched Rei or another healer again, he would see this agony brought on him again. She didn’t think anyone doubted that Wendell would make good on his threat. The battered wife was getting rags and tending to her cowering husband, ignoring her own wounds, as they left. She had a particularly nasty glare for them as they walked out, and Rei didn’t quite understand why this woman had such animosity for people who were only trying to help and do the right thing.

“No I don’t think so,” she sighed. “Unless you feel like cleaning me up a little. I should probably change…” She stood up and disappeared into her room for a minute, peeling off the bloody shirt and her skirt, pulling on the familiar hide pants and shirt. When she returned to her seat, Wendell was inspecting her injuries. He apologized, though she wasn’t sure what for. It certainly wasn’t his fault. “Oh it’s ok. I- I probably shouldn’t have gotten involved. It only took one look at her to know what was going on. I guess I just wasn’t expecting this reaction.”

Steam wafted up from the pot of water that was getting good and hot. “There’s some rags in the kitchen.” She gestured to the few little cabinets that were in that area. “Thank you, you didn’t have to do that.” She smiled, but it hurt to smile too much, and she didn’t want her lip to start bleeding again. “I didn’t know I was your woman though.” Rei couldn’t resist teasing him about it.

Wendell looked apologetic but had little to say in regards to his slip of the tongue. Yes he had called her his woman, something he hadn't really had time to think about while he was beating her attacker stupid. Wendell escaped Rei’s pointed look to fetch a clean rag and soak it in the water. He picked it out by one edge and managed to squeeze it out, juggling the hot cloth between his hands until it was cool enough to use on the healer’s face.

With gentle strokes he managed to clear away a lot of the blood that had already dried and rinsed the rag out again before holding it against her busted lip. “You've still got all your teeth,” he teased, “you're not a real fighter until you lose a tooth.”

For a time he seemed content to sit and fuss over the woman, making sure she had everything she needed to make her comfortable before he realised that it was getting dark outside and that he had completely forgotten about his shift at the Harlot. Wendell didn't know how he was going to get out of this one. He bit his lower lip, thoughtful. What was the worst thing that could happen if he missed one day of work? Someone had died the other night, that was just about as bad as it got, and as Wendell was on security tonight it was quite important that he went.

“I have to go, beautiful, but I'll come by in the next few trials to make sure you're all right,” he promised and bowed his head to kiss the back of her hand. “Rest up, keep that cut clean,” Wendell smiled, he had to laugh at himself in telling the doctor what to do. He kissed the top of her head and left then without another word.

Comments:
GASP! A thread with nothing kinky, flirtatious, or sexual in it. I jest, this thread was a great read, and I am glad to see more facets to the characters coming to the surface, i.e. Rei's caring for the woman's well being and Wendell's explosive anger. The structure and flow was good nothing really caught me up, and besides a few misplaced words, no glaring grammar issues. Keep up the great storytelling, you're characters are magnificent.
