Finding Good Fortune

What does the future hold?

Aren't you curious?...

52nd of Ymiden, 717

The people were in good spirits, she noticed, her hands fiddling with the deck of cards and she smiled at the first drunken man to cross her path. He stumbled, catching himself upon the corner of her stall, grinning apologetically and the gypsy gave a wave of her ringed ringers, “Care for a reading?”

He smiled but before he could answer, was quickly dragged off by another woman for dancing. This did not offend her, of course. The people in Rharne were hummingbirds, drinking sweet nectar and buzzing from one adventure to the next. She liked that, even with the tragedies that had been creeping in the shadows, and just like hummingbirds, sometimes they lived short lives. For how long could one's heart withstand such a quick paced lifestyle?

The gypsy pushed off from where she had been leaning, walking behind her table and fiddled idly with the necklaces, candles, rings and eyed the small locked case that sat beneath the counter. Nearby the sound of music shifted into something more fast paced and she watched her companions dance in the crowd. Skirts twirled and the smell of white sage rose into the air.

More people passed, each one getting a steady look and knowing smirk, as the gypsy woman waved to tarot cards and motioned to her wares, speaking loudly through the festivities, “Tarot readings. Find out your future, your potential. What does fate have in store for you? Don't be shy.”

Hello, Rharnians! Feel free to approach the gypsy. I will be pulling out my tarot cards and doing a simple spread for each of your characters (and can post pictures if you are interested!). We can branch off into separate, individual moderated threads with your results if you prefer. Just say so in your own reply, and of course, if you're not interested in a reading but seeing what else the woman has for sale, feel free to inquire. Each reading will be 5gn, and I hope you enjoy Buskerfest!

Finding Good Fortune

It was only the first day of the Buskerfest and the citizens of Rharne certainly had not wasted any time to make the whole event as festive as possible. Music filled the air, their notes jubilant and loud – almost to the point of giving her a headache. Dancers drifted across the streets while people watched and cheered, leaving very little room to move.

“Everyone’s partying and we are stuck here doing work,” whined the young priestess as she stood on her tiptoes to watch a particularly talented pair twirling at the center of the swirling crowd. Lyn cursed herself for being born short.

“It is best if we do not dawdle,” Leth said firmly, grabbing her arm and urging her to move on. Of course, give it to her liaison to always ruin her fun. He seemed completely uninterested in the whole celebration. “Besides, you shall have your day off tomorrow.”

Reluctantly, Lyn turned away and continued down the street. The crowd parted for them easily enough – she wasn’t sure if it was because of their armor or Leth’s scowl. Leth was right and they do need to stick to their duty, but there was little to nothing that they could do. They were tasked to observe the festival and make sure that no trouble arise – not the drunken brawl kind of trouble, but the much more violent one. The young woman had been the one who asked for the job, but now that she had spent breaks of simply strolling around the city, she was quite sure that patrolling the city was of little use.

Needless to say, nothing interesting happened as they continued monitoring the city. Well there was this foolish girl who caught her hair on fire while trying to twirl a staff with both of its ends on fire. Until one particular stall grabbed her attention, at least.

“Tarot readings. Find out your future, your potential. What does fate have in store for you? Don't be shy.”

Lyn whirled on the balls of her feet to face her companion, smiling deviously. “We have been walking for breaks. The least you can do is let me get my future read.”

“Do you truly have to?” the knight asked sharply, raking his hair with his fingers – a clear enough sign that he was annoyed.

Most people would have balked at the young man’s glare, but Lyn had enough time getting used to it. So instead, she shrugged innocently and waved her hand at the gypsy woman as she approached the booth. “I want to see what fate has in store for me.”

Any excuse for a festival in Rharne was a good one. That was the way of the city that celebrated Ilaren and the people that lived there. Or even nearby, in some cases. Arlo had grown up on a farm beyond the outskirts, and though he'd been gone over an arc now, traveling in any number of directions and back again, he'd attended any number of these festivals. They tended to be colorful, loud and rowdy and even though he'd embraced the life of a traveler as Cassion would have it, he was glad to have a chance to attend another.

He wasn't sure where Vega was. She hadn't been back at camp when he'd left. But she'd gone earlier that trial and he'd assumed she'd been off to work. Work. He'd gone hunting instead before returning and cleaning himself up before heading into the city. Maybe she was done with her job for the trial after all, and she was somewhere in the crowd.

Arlo had seen gypsies and fortune tellers before, both on the road and here at home. He liked how free, colorful and strange they were. He'd shared their fires, meals, swapped stories with them but had never let any of them tell his fortune. He hadn't thought he believed in things like fate or destiny. And the young man still didn't. Much, anyway. But he'd experienced a number of strange and wondrous things during the time he'd been gone. Some he hadn't told anyone about yet, including Vega, such as his time in a maze outside of Desnind.

He'd come to think then that maybe there was something to it, if only a little. So he'd eyed the gypsy woman from a few yards away, curious and undecided, before she happened to look his way and smile. Well why not then, he thought. It could be a lark. "Alright then," he said. "I'll have a go."

"Aww com'mon Kherron, just this one time, please?"

"I said no, Reezer."

"All those times I go snoopin' for ya, and this is how you repay an ol' friend? Just turnin' me away?"

"You need to learn your way around a bar of soap before I'd ever consider you an 'old friend'."

"Kherron--"

"I said no."

"But she--"

Kherron glanced over his shoulder at the mousy man whose shaggy mane was hastily tied in a leather thong. He seemed to quiver from the sharp look in the barkeep's eyes.

"Fine, I get it, ok? I'll back off. I just thought she liked my daisies."

"It made her break out in hives." The mortalborn rolled his eyes, but he couldn't help but grin in amusement at Reezer's dumbfounded look. The crowds swelled and grew as the festival dragged on. Kherron lost his timorous companion eventually, but he welcomed the relative lack of directed attention. Here, in the midst of Buskerfest, he was anonymous; no one knew his name, and he took great care to keep it that way.

While he wandered, he was drawn to each stall that sported more than just the usual. He craved uniqueness, startling twists and otherworldly themes. The mundane was never his interest, but in the city of Rharne, mundane wasn't always the status quo. Drunks and brew enthusiasts brought a measure of unpredictability that made the town he called home a refreshing experience each day.

Kherron slipped between the throngs of bodies, absorbing sights, sounds, tastes and smells. It was the flash of light that danced across the surface of jewelry that initially drew his attention to a particular stall, but when he heard her words, he paused in veiled curiosity.

The mortalborn was no stranger to gypsy women or fortune tellers. A century of life exposes one to a wide selection of people from across the world, but he'd never bothered with the idea of guessing fate. In his abrasive, younger years, he'd challenged the idea of a grand design; believing that his life was his own to live by. Age has long since drawn him towards the mystic arts, and the possibilities it brought. But it was a passing curiosity, and nothing more.

But now?

"I'd be interested to see how well you play your cards, madam," he met her gaze with a knowing smile, sliding five shiny, minted coins toward her direction.

Rharne was, more or less, better than expected. Zana found the people to be friendly, open minded and more than moderately hedonistic; all of these were good traits as far as she was concerned. The blonde-haired woman made her way through the crowds of Buskerfest, watching those around her. Small details intrigued her and her lips lifted in a knowing smile of greeting as she recognised one of her previous clients in the crowd. He met her eyes and returned the smile, his arm draped around his wife's shoulder. Zana smiled in memory and moved on.

The festival was a celebration and the place was more than embracing the party atmosphere. Every now and then Zana paused at a stall, looking at the wares here and there. Nothing really took her interest until she got to the gypsy stall. There were others around it, a couple and two males. Zana was happy to browse the wares on there, perusing all that was for sale until such time as the gypsy looked at her and spoke to her.

Ice blue eyes regarded the gypsy and Zana smiled. "I would like a reading, yes." Her voice was soft and self assured. "Perhaps you have other things for sale, also?"

Looking down at the stall, Zana was thinking about how this sort of thing might be useful in work, to add a touch of something unusual and exotic to the clients' experiences. It would require careful handling and probably a customised deck of cards, but it might be an angle worthy of consideration.

I'd love to see a picture, and a moderated thread would be fantastic. Zana would be interested in finding out what else is for sale. Thank you

Finding Good Fortune

Lynessa:
A priestess and a knight bantered before the gypsy's stall, with the knight appearing far more annoyed than the pretty woman. Vadoma found this all interesting, and would have greatly liked to have read the man's fortune, but was pleased to see at least one of them approach, “Good trial, Priestess.” She gave a small, respectful bow of her head, and bone beads clinked together as the strands of her hair shifted.

As she spoke, her hands fiddled with the cards, shuffling them thoughtfully, and nodded towards the stool available. It had wooden legs with nature markings latticing up their sides and the cushion was covered in a navy fabric, “Please sit and we can get started.”

Arlo Creede:
She saw his apprehension, how he watched her and wanted to approach. Vadoma smiled to herself when he did, setting her deck down and extending a hand towards the man, “No need to be so hesitant. I don't bite.” It seemed this particular customer watched a situation before finding it safe to join, like a child debating on whether or not to go against a mother's wishes. His curiosity was what she liked, and in hopes to soothe any doubts, the gypsy scooted some of her trinkets to the side to clear a better space for any potential readings, but seemed to pick up on his skepticism, “I always let my cards pick the person I'm reading for.” she began, glimpsing momentarily at what appeared to be an empty space between a circle of carved unlit candles, “But it seems they're a bit conflicted. How about you decide?”

Kherron & Zana:
Putting you two in the next post. You're coming, I promise.
