Transmogrification III

48 Ashan 719

The morning was colder than expected. Zarik bundled himself in his coat and a heavy scarf made from soft wool. He spent a few bits with Asher and Bjorn before heading out to Lucretia’s for a day of study. The day before had gone well. He’d turned into Tyara for the first time, after a rapid transform between himself and Kiara’s totem. For the moment, he’d returned to himself. His sister, Tyara, had much too many internal ailments that he now knew about.

He walked up the steps, and used the key that Lucretia had now given him to freely enter and exit her home. It was a silver key that looked plain and would be easily overlooked by someone who didn’t know what door it matched with. Still, he knocked a couple times to announce his arrival before opening the heavy door. Zarik stepped inside and glanced around. He didn’t see Lucretia.

On a long study table, he shuffled through some of the papers and glanced at the notes. It looked like she was working on a new volume of her series Inquisitione Scintilla Meam. He had told her of his husband’s intention to acquire a fifth spark, and the failure that had become his Lothar servant because of it. Zarik casually read through the notes that Lucretia had jotted down about the matter while he’d been away overnight. He supposed perhaps the woman was resting, as she remained awake during the night and slept during the day. But he already knew that she didn’t require that much sleep.

Zarik went to the kitchen and looked around the pantry before taking out a kettle. He cleaned it out, though it wasn’t terribly dirty, and he prepared it to make some tea while he waited. It was nice and quiet, almost silent, in the place and he felt a sense of calm. As he boiled the water over a small flame, he caught sight of a scroll laying on the counter surface. The biqaj picked it up, unrolled it, and noticed that it was a note meant for him.

It had a list of three books, and instructions to read them. He glanced to the side where he saw the trio of books stacked at the corner of the counter. He brought them over, sat on the stool, and started to read through. They had to do with Transmogrification - or Becoming, as the laymage put it.

A few pages had been designated with ribbons for him to read specifically. Though Lucretia did not share the domain’s spark in her soul, she clearly had studied the discipline in depth. He wondered why, as she had evaded his questioning about her interest. Did she simply know about all domains or was there a particular reason? He set aside his curiosity though, to focus on his study.

Re: Transmogrification III

When Lucretia finally joined him, the tea was long gone - the remaining water in the kettle was cold - and Zarik had gotten through two of the three books. He glanced over at her and smiled. The tall biqaj woman wore a simple black dress, as usual, and she looked as rested - or tired - as she ever did, which was to say that she remained completely neutral without the slightest hint of whether she had a good rest or a bad rest, only that she had been up in the loft.

“Good trial, Lord Zarik” she greeted him. She drifted over, her steps so light that she nearly floated, to the kitchenette. “I see you found my note.”

“Good trial. Yes, thank you,” he replied and shut the book with his thumb between the pages he’d been on. “There are questions I have, but I believe I know what I wish to practice today, if you’d do me the honor of supervision for it?”

She smiled and her blackened teeth with cyan gums showed. The woman started to boil a new batch of water in the kettle. “And what is that which perks your interest, lord?”

Zarik opened the book, flipped through a few pages, then set it on the counter. He pointed at the line that started the section he wanted to test. “It is called… Blending.”

“Ah, that.” She nodded. “That is not so difficult, but important to know. Especially to prepare you for your aims in this domain. That reminds me…”

He watched as she held up a hand for him to pause in any further conversation. She walked around, leaving the kitchenette, and disappearing back up the spiral staircase into the loft again. A few bits passed and then she returned with a small box in her hands. She handed it to him with another smile, then went to attend to the hissing kettle.

“What is this?” asked Zarik. He opened it, then his eyes widened. A ring made from bone was there, almost identical to the totems of his sisters. “Is… Is this… your…”

“It is a totem of myself,” the raven-haired woman said. “I believe you should have it. It will offer you greater perspective in the totems of your sisters and the unique dynamics available to you.”

“Wo-would I be able to use your magic with it?” he inquired, taking the ring out and putting it on his right hand’s index finger.

“Oh no,” she answered with a shake of her head. “In fact, you will not even look like me. Not how I am anymore. The totem will not carry my sparks, but your’s. A totem is, after all, something that your soul fills - not the original creature that the totem comes from. As such, you will look like I did before… before everything, though you will carry your wings still, as you do with your sisters.”

He nodded in understanding, then he grinned. Zarik lifted from the stool and said in an enthusiastic voice, “Okay! I’m ready to give it a try. Blending, that is. Will you observe?”

She nodded, poured her tea into the cup, then walked around to sit on one of the stone benches. “Proceed,” she said, crossing her legs and watching him closely.

Re: Transmogrification III

He had his sisters, and he had himself, and Zarik walked to the center of the study to prepare for his practice. He fidgeted with the bone rings, considering which two of the three to blend. Instead of remain silent about his intention though, he shared it with Lucretia so as to have proper observation: “I will be blending myself and my sister Tyara, because she has more obvious markers. My aim is to change my eyes, and… hair, and switch my scars for hers.”

With the intention shared, he started to take off his clothes. Zarik blushed when he got to the last layer, but he stripped anyway because it wasn’t like he’d be able to keep the fabric. Besides, Lucretia did not seem to mind.

She clarified for him, when he’d hesitated with the last few articles of clothing, “I have seen many Becomers transform and otherwise. You will not shock me with your form, Lord Zarik.”

With that said, he continued with his work. He closed his eyes. His ether slithered through his Becomer spark, a sense of primal instinct filled him, and it looped around Tyara’s totem ring and then his own.

He drew from them both, inviting the forms into him, to mesh together. Mentally, he guided and felt along the edges of what seemed to be the distinct totems. Physically, his body had started to change - in gradual ways with the darkening and lightening in patches on his skin - of blood that started to trickle from his scars - and of his hair that started to lengthen in rapid growth.

Skin: he focused. Hair: he focused. Eyes: he focused. And then the pain hit him again. It was the eyes that had done it. While the skin had prickled and stung like many infinite pinches over his nerves, and his hair made his scalp itch with a burning sensation, when he focused on his eyes-

-a searing agony coated his brain. He could feel almost every single particle of nerve along the optical lines that attached the internal systems. Zarik shouted at this, his voice blended between his own and his sister’s, and it sounded more like a wailing scream. He grabbed at his face, scratched around his eyes, but tried not to halt the progress of the specifically centered transformation.

He felt his stomach turn over. His eyes melted in the sockets, then gathered the juice to reform. The shape of his skull cracked and morphed to fit with his sister’s structure rather than his own. Zarik scratched into the skin.

Through the pain, he heard Lucretia’s voice in a sharp biting tone, “Concentrate, Zarik. Don’t let yourself get lost in it! It shan’t last forever!”

Zarik retched, though only of the tea he had drank, as his stomach couldn’t contain anything anymore. He trembled, his vision dark and blind, until finally… finally… light started to return. He blinked, then looked up to see Lucretia standing in front of him with her cyan-lit eyes wide with what almost suggested… fear?

“Di-did I do it?” he asked, exhausted, and sunk down to his knees as he lost the last dregs of his strength. “Are my eyes of my sister’s form?”

“Yes,” answered Lucretia. She exhaled lowly, then said, “You were… successful in every account. You should rest now, so as to not risk any overstep. Come, I will help you to the loft.”
