II. Merchant of Death

108th Trial, Ashan, Arc 691
The Hall of Rule and Reprimand
14th break

Tantos kept it dark in the training room. Half the torches stood unlit on the walls, keeping the shadows long and visibility short. Looking around, the cadets could make each other out as they stood in a circle, the two instructors in the middle of it, but not make out features. They had to squint to make out limbs and poses, and when it came to sparring... well, a chunk of it was just luck and intuition.

Tantos kept it heavy down there, too. They didn't wear the cadet chainmail but the half-plate that fully-commissioned Black Guard officers were on their rounds. Strong enough to ward off a sword or an ax... and heavy enough to make you feel like you had a child hanging around your neck while you were sparring. After a break or two it was a miracle just to keep your hands up in a guard.

Cadet Kasoria had thought it was cruelty at first, just more of the aristo bastards enjoying fucking with the street rats with stupid, vicious, unfair training tortures. Then, for their first arc review, Kasoria understood the meaning behind it all. The brightness of the open Testing Yard, making all his opponent's moves seem obvious, compared to the sneaking semi-blindness of the dungeon. The lightness of the chain links they were, lending them such speed and finesse now their limbs and torsos were freed from the clanking plates.

Tantos watched them all pass with a shit-eating smirk on his face, and Kasoria knew why.

"You train hard, harder than the testing, harder than most of the shite you face in the streets... and when you're actually there, it's easier. Not easy, but easier."

His grey eyes flashed around the circle like steel, seeming to catch every recruit's gaze for a fraction of a trill.

"What do we call "easy", cadets?"

They answered as one, twenty young, fit, dedicated and trained throats barking out the works so loud they were deafened by them in the low, tight room.

"Easy ain't for the Blackjack, save that shit for the Army!"

"Fucking right it is, boys. Corporal Drix, let's go over last season's key lessons. Pull a couple of them from the ranks..."

Kasoria's jaw worked back and forth. His hands rubbed and fidgeted in the grip of each other as the short, stocky, shaven-headed assistant to the Sergeant scowled at them. Not a hair on his head, nor eyebrows or stubble. Just sharp cheekbones and blazing eyes, like a tamed hawk Kasoria had seen once. Piercing and predatory and more than a little unhinged in their focus. The man walked around, staring at each young face, pausing for a trill. No sound save for his footsteps. Not a cough or a grunt. No flicker of emotion on any face.

They all had so much to prove. They were so young. Fates and Void, had he ever really been so young?

"You... and you!"

The second finger jab was at him, and Kasoria's heart jumped into his throat. But two arcs in the Hallowed Hall (as Tantos half-sarcastically called it) had rammed enough discipline into him that he just clicked his heels together and nodded, like a good cadet. He strolled forward and lowered his gaze for a moment-

-enough to sweep a look around his fellows. Most of them taller, broader than him. They had more mass and thus more potential power when they turned to violence, and he'd borne many a hammering down here on the stones.

Not the sands. Not like with the swords training. Tantos had apparently ordered the sand cleaned out of the stony room they stood in now. "They ain't training to fight in a fucking desert," had been his justification, "And when they fall out there, it won't be on a nice, soft, sodding sand dune. So, let's prepare them for what they will be falling on."

Kasoria preferred the stones. Almost like cobbles. He'd been scrapping and grappling and brawling across them for going on ten arcs. His hands had grown new calluses. His muscles were larger, stronger. He looked over the short expanse of cut stone and saw Tantos standing across from him. Some fingers on his right hand tingled; remembering the damage the man had done to him years before.

Young Kasoria smiled, and not at the memory, or even the potential for getting even. He smiled because he knew what they were here to learn, what mysteries and tomes wrought in flesh and blood and bruises they were to absorb.

Every week for two years. This was as close as his soul came to worship.

Ki'Enaq. Merchant of Death.

"A'right, boy. Time to-"

Kasoria lunged.

Kasoria swore he could feel the bones in his head rattle like dice in a cup as he hit the stones. Something cracked, high in his cheek. He groaned into the floor and blood cut it off. So he spat it out, and began the long, laborious process of remembering how his arms and legs worked.

"Not quite ready for that shite, boy."

Kasoria was inclined to agree, face down on the floor, but it felt somehow wrong not to try and apply what he'd learned. Ki'Enaq was fundamentally about offence, forward momentum, taking the fight to your opponent and dominating it. You struck hard and fast and first, wherever possible, and put the bastard down. He'd charged forward and opened with a high hook to Tantos' head-

-a feint, to draw his guard up, masking his true strike-

-a kick to the bigger, older man's stomach, aiming to double him over, make way for-

He never got that far. Tantos ducked away from the feint, slid back from the boot to his gut-

-right arm chopping down at Kasoria's flailing leg, armored forearm making him yelp as it connected-

-left jab taking him in the breastbone, sending him staggering back and clutching his chest. Would have sent him to his knees, without his breastplate. Tantos was pulling is punches, though. Didn't capitalize on the opening, just stood there, waiting for the cadet to right himself-

Waiting for him to try again.

High didn't work, so go low.

Kasoria surged on with pain crackling up his leg, left jab blocked, right arm drawing back-

-not snapping out, another feint-

-dropped lower and swung out with his good leg, a sweep to at least rattle the Sergeant's balance if he couldn't drop him-

Tantos pivoted on the ball of one foot and snapped out a kick at Kasoria's knee as it swung towards him. The cadet cried out again and buried it, clenched it down behind bared teeth and exploded upward, hands grasping like claws-

-Tantos' fists shot out as one like pistons, hammering into his chest, stopping him cold, then grabbed him by the side of the head and-

THUNK

-slammed his forehead into his chest... or rather, the steel plate covering it.

Kasoria's world became exploding stars and black, swooping, flapping things that blanketed his vision like a moth-covered blanket. He felt his balance somehow drift away from him, like his legs weren't there anymore, and he was floating, flying-

-until Tantos sidestepped, gripping him by the shoulder and arm and flung him down to the hard floor.

Which was where he found himself. Again. Panting into the dust and stone and forcing himself to his knees.

"Ki'Enaq ain't made for defense. But we ain't soldiers, and we ain't always on the attack, boys. We gotta be smarter than that." The words seemed to wander into his mind through ringing ears. Muted but still distinct, getting louder as he found his feet. "We don't need Blackjacks going around picking fights, cracking heads, leaving bodies in the street. We're here to defend and protect the city, and the people. That means they have to trust you. Look up to you."

Kasoria rose, swaying, bloody, already exhausted. His legs throbbed uneasily and there was bloody dribbling down his chin. But he wasn't down anymore, and when he spat to the side-

-Tantos turned to face him again, gleam of approval in his eyes.

"So you don't go throwing the first punch, unless the bastards are out for blood. But if they go for you first, empty hands or not... you turn it on 'em quick and let them know who we are."

The Sergeant looked the cadet up and down, this scrawny, angry thing he'd found in the cells two arcs ago. He'd come a long way, a special project of Tantos. Every trial he had to prove himself to the high-born, the moneyed, the privileged that saw the Black Guard as just another feather in their caps, another means of control. But he'd come up from the streets, the gutters, the Outer Perimeter and the underground... just like the boy in front of him.

He was getting old, too. Someone had to carry on what he started. Someone who knew the people, and the messy, dirty world they lived in beyond the high walls of the Citadel. Kasoria looked his patron square in the eye... and slid into a ready stance. The Sergeant smiled, a flicker of teeth in the gloom of the dungeon, and nodded to the other fresh cadet the Corporal had singled out.

"Cadet Watkins?"

"Sir!"

"Take him down. See what he's learned. See if he's been listening."

No more shadows, no more stars. Kasoria's hands slid into fists, and with a roar he met the force sent against him.

Another good solo. Not as fast-paced and intense as the first one, but still interesting and it draws you in. Combat is definitely your forte when it comes to writing. Well done! I didn't give you renown because I didn't think it was particularly applicable here. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact me!
