Dream Thread, Neronin’s Dreamscape

Neronin fell. It was agonizingly long in a way that only dream falls were. The thrill and gut-wrenching terror of it never become normal despite his falling for minutes now. He fell through a dark sky, a Cylus sky, towards a snowy field. Both the sky and the field were covered in undead. Neronin felt as though his experience of dreams was always haunted with his own magic, but he has unable to command it. At night, in his mind, Neronin became the victim of his own power.

The false mage screamed as he fell. It felt appropriate even though he knew he was in a dream. Once he screamed he began to close the distance to the field in earnest. Neronin felt a new, less unlike state of panic now. He closed his eyes and braced himself, but the impact never came. Instead he fell through the snow. Neronin landed hard on a stone cobbled floor. He felt the impact but no pain came, as if it would distract from the dread of the undead. He could not see out of the grey hole above where snow gently drifted in, but he knew the undead were making for it. Neronin glanced around and realized he was in the hallway of a crypt. Hollow spaces seemed to house skeletal and decaying bodies. Candles stood in sconces periodically along the walls. The light was dim from them and seemed only there to make his footing uncertain and throw the dead bodies into sharp relief.

Neronin knew he was in a dream state, but that did not change his fear. Perhaps it was because that fear was something he experienced in subtle ways in his waking hours. The fear that his power would turn, the fear of those deathly things he created. The fear of the dark spark within. Neronin felt his bare feet slapping against the rough stones and for a long moment, or perhaps several minutes that was the entirety of his sensation. It was as though his brain had become enthralled with the cold stones. But then the bodies in the walls began to stir. He could hear behind the clatter of bones. The undead had made their way into the crypt and now the dead in the walls were clambering out as well.

Neronin turned a corner in the massive crypt, a labyrinth of the dead. He continued to turn and sprint in random directions, vaguely away that he was doing towards some safe haven deep within the labyrinth. Neronin turned and glanced behind. What he saw sent his heart racing. The hallway was filled with Marrows, Husks, and Blights all shambling towards him with green hunger in their eyes. Neronin made to turn and run again.

But he fell sideways.

His head slammed through a thick layer of cobwebs and his eyes stung. He heard a rasping noise close at hand as he struggled to pull the cobwebs away from him. When he could see through blurry eyes, Neronin saw a yellow set of teeth not inches from his face. A skeletal figure had its fists around his robes and was attempting to gnaw at his face. Neronin screamed and pulled himself out of the small tomb. The skeletal form was dragged after him, still dangling from his robes and chomping at him with that hunger.

The horde of undead was now feet from him. Neronin bolted into the dark, the skeleton’s feet and legs snapping off and clattering as they struck the floor. The torso still clung stubbornly to Neronin. He paid it no mind as he dodged around other undead climbing down out of their tombs. Skeletal fingers scratched at his arms and teeth tugged at his robes. Neronin kept going.

Eventually the mage found an open door. He ran through it with much more endurance than his waking self could show. That was always how it was. He felt the exhaustion, the fear, the pain, but never ran out of energy. Neronin drove through the door and slapped it behind him. He ripped the skeleton from him and threw it against the opposite wall. The skull toppled off and rolled slowly down the winding stairwell he now stood in.

There were no lights here. Neronin stumbled down the stairs with the same dreadful terror as before. The undead were behind, scraping against the old wooden door. They would break through soon. He had to keep moving. Their hunger for the flesh of the living was all too familiar to him. Neronin once again felt his mind shift to the cold dampness of the stone stairs as he had no other sensory input. His feet fell clumsily as he stepped down into a massive open room.

Large white mounts appeared to be piles of pale skulls. The ground was littered with smaller bones and grime that he paid no attention to as he ran. He wasn’t running toward anything in particular, more away from the stairs. The mage tried in vain to cal upon any of his sparks, but they never responded in this state.

As he ran he heard a rushing sound begin to rise in the room. The massive space was dark in and seemed to do on forever. The ceiling was vaulted and black stone. Neronin saw that the piles of skulls began to rumble as he ran past them. He slowed enough to watch as something black poured out from the eye sockets and the gaping maws. Neronin thought it was dark water at first, but then he saw the green. Thousands upon thousands of tiny green eyes, and the clatter of tiny paws.

Rats.

Neronin wasted no time fleeing. He did not know which direction to run because the rats were closing in from all sides. He simply ran and when he saw a horde getting closer he turned. Neronin heard the spitting, hissing, and scratching as he saw a light in the distance and turned sharply to head for it. The rats were gaining on him. He felt his feet stumble on a rib cage even as he thought about what their sharp tiny teeth could do to him.

His hip slammed into the hard cobbles. Neronin pushed himself up but he fell again. His feet slid on the wet stones and he could feel the tiny claws scratching at his bare skin. He could feel the fur brushing against him as a few rats crawled between his robe and his bare flesh. He could feel their hungry bites and they bit tiny bits of flesh from his legs. Neronin looked back at them, his eyes wide in horror. Rats clawed at each other to get to him, they swarmed over his feet and up his legs. They scuttled along with shreds of skin hanging loose and rotting intestines dragging behind them. They all stared with glowing green eyes, hungry.

Neronin screamed again and pushed himself up, adrenaline keeping his energy up. He felt his legs trembling in pain as he scrambled towards the light. He stumbled and crawled, his fingernails breaking against the cobbles and his skin ripping in places. Neronin could make out the light. It was a small square on the floor. A trapdoor.

He ran for it, the rats dropping off his bloodied legs as he did so. The horde of black, hungry rats followed a few feet behind. Neronin flung himself into the trapdoor without a care for what lay beneath. As he fell the hatch closed behind, blocking off the rats. Neronin hit another set of stones, this time wide limestone. He panted for a moment and pushed himself up. Looking around he did not bother to inspect his legs. He knew he would not like what he found.

This room was vast too, though smaller than the last. It was well lit my large flaming torches in sconces on the perfectly circular wall. The wall alternated between torch and shadowy alcove. There were no doors or ways out of here. The end of the road perhaps?

As Neronin turned he did find that the center of the room housed a sarcophagus. Neronin took a step towards it. On the far side of the room there was movement. A gaunt looking figure stepped out of one of the alcoves. It wore dusty leather armor and carried a claymore. The figure had no skin on its face and the eyes burned green. It stared at Neronin, raised the claymore in a signal and began top sprint towards him. Even as Neronin’s heart sunk move undead swordsmen came sprinting out of each alcove along the wall. Their swords gleamed in the torchlight and their figures cast long, dark shadows.

Neronin sprinted for the sarcophagus. He did not bother to focus on any of the warriors because he knew to do so was death. The Etzori mage found one warrior suddenly appear in his vision. The undead swiped with his massive sword and Neronin stumbled sideways away from him. The blade caught in Neronin’s side as he kept running. The steel dug deep, tearing through rib and flesh. Neronin immediately felt his breath coming more labored and intense pain coursing through his side. He kept going though, somehow.

He reached the sarcophagus and threw himself into the stone coffin even as he heard the snapping of the undead teeth around him. A hand reached in after him as the massive stone lid fell closed over him. Neronin felt the hand scraping at his arm and screamed again. He began to sob.

Neronin. A soft, dark voice cooed to him.

He sobbed harder.

Neronin, I can save you. The voice said, the pleasant words were masked in a tone of insidious intent.

“Who are you?” Neronin called out, though it could be no other...

You know me, Neronin. We’ve been together a long time.

“Who are you?” Neronin repeated, his voice shaking.

Let me save you. I can make it so you never die. The voice said silkily.

“How?” Neronin asked, his head pounding in his chest. He could feel the blood leaking from his wound.

Magic. The word seemed to last an age.

Neronin said nothing.

We can live forever, together, Neronin. The voice goaded. It seemed on the verge of laughter.

“I don’t want to die.” Neronin said. “I just want to be free.”

We don’t have to follow anyone’s rules, Neronin. The voice said. Then more seriously, Just say it.

“H-help me.” Neronin muttered, crying.

The sarcophagus lid ripped off as he spoke. The undead were gone. Instead there was a great green and black miasma of ether hovering over the where Neronin lay. It coiled and shifted with power. Neronin drew in breath to say something, but before he could the thing dove at him and ripped his chest open.

Neronin watched it happen. He did not die, he did not faint. The ether pulled his ribs up out of his skin, tearing through the cartilage plate that protected his chest and the fleshy skin covering it. Neronin watched with an open mouth as pain flooded him. Maddening pain. He did not know his name, he did not know where he was. He only knew he wished he was dead. The ether-entity tore out his organs. Neronin watched a lung fly out of the sarcophagus. The thing pumped ether into his chest cavity and somehow Neronin hadn’t died yet. He was meant to endure this pain before release.

Neronin let his head lull back and felt his eyes going dark. His body throbbed with the need to breath, but he no longer had lungs. Black began to fill his vision. Before he died he heard the voice one last time.

We’re going to live forever together, Neronin. His necrotic spark said. Then he died.

You have a real way of keeping a reader on the edge of their seat. I am literally leaning forward in bed now as I type this comment. Somehow I moved 90 degrees forward from my comfortable position.. when I get back problems leater in life I blame you! But it's not the subject matter (that's a different story). It's the way you command language.. it's incredible.
