Continued from here

“Pep. So glad you could join us.”

“Let’s do the chit chat later. There’s more important stuff to worry about-”

“No, no, no, no. Pep, no. Nightmares are child’s play, yes? We have you, the once and future herald of Jesine, to light the path through our darkest hour. I sit in this tree comforted by the fact that you, the supreme sword of dreams, will save us in due time.”

“Cut it with the sarcasm. I get it. I’m not a herald, just someone who’s been handed the bloody uniform and is trying to make sure she doesn’t trip. That enough of an ego boost for you?”

“Did your so-called goddess even give you the orientation tour?”

“Nooooo… But hang on, I do have a primer.. Miret! What do I do with a Nightmare?”

“Lay and pray?”

“I was talking to Miret.”

Make the nightmare lose control of the dream.

“All the good it’s done you.”

“Yeah, well you aren’t doing any good either. So if talking and being sarcastic is the best you can do.. Stop yammering in my ear.”

“The Nightmare will not lose control, Pep. It’s an infection in the heart of the dreamscape, and it will keep digging in until it has what it wants.”

“Which is?”

“Ro.”

“Whatever for? Not that it matters I suppose.. What if it does catch him?”

“I dunno. I’ve never been caught. For the sake of both our educations, let’s see what happens.”

“Let’s not. I suppose you plan to just sit this one out then?”

“Do you see me with a nice, elderly grandmother hanging around me and giving me pointers? Do you see me equipped with a fairy who apparently is incapable of doing the one job he or she or it was created for. I’ll like to see what happens because no one is exactly fuckin’ hanging around giving me tips on how to grow up to be a respectable dreamwalker of society. I am-”

“Maybe if you could shut up with the commentary? And is that a poor me thing I’m hearing? But better yet, if you don’t intend to help, go out the same door you let the nightmare in fro- Ow!”

“Nightmare, sweetie. Pain’s real.”

“Shit. I better get to Ro...“

“Greatest of luck. I’ll be cheering you with all my heart.”

“Like you have one. Come Miret.”

“I do. It beats to the sound of ‘what exactly do you think you can do to a water beast the size of a house?’

“Distract him perhaps.”

“Uh huh.”

“Perhaps nothing.”

“Much more realistic assessment of your capabilities, toddler.”

“But definitely nothing sitting here...”

“Right before we swerve back to crazy.”

“Says the expert on craziness-”

“You’ll die uselessly, serving a goddess who has given you no directives, saving a boy you don’t even know. Are you all built for idiocy?’

“Apparently. Perhaps that’s another thing Jesine looks for in us, idiocy. Anyway… Miret, I am not able to make anything on my own.. Can you?”

Nope. No direct manipulation till it’s done.. One way or the other. Think Pepper.

“Yes. Think, Pep. I’m just here to enjoy the view.”

“All right.. Where’s Ro right now? I can’t see him! Is he underwater? Miret go track things.. And send to me like usual..“

He’s hiding at the earlier place.

“It’s a water monster. Would it be able to follow over land? Are there rules for the monster too?”

“What is the flying rat saying?”

“Ro’s hiding at the old clamming place. So? Are there? Chuck it.. We better try at least.. Miret, show yourself to Ro, tell him to run away from the river, on this side of it. Fast and low.”

“This is great, Pep. I get to find out what a Nightmare does to a fairy this trial.”

“She can choose to be real or not dummy. She won’t be caught.”

“Haven’t you been listening: SHE’S REAL HERE. WE’RE ALL REAL.”

“When we’re all REAL.. she’s not visible and can’t be touched.”

“Would you chance that against the omni-spectrum of abilities a Nightmare can leverage against a dreamer? I’ve encountered a tadpole that can shift into an acid-spitting toad. I’ve seen a being that can infect an entire dreamscape and turn everything in it into a hazard. I’ve seen a living maze that infected everything it touched with shadow. Every Nightmare is a new beast, a new territory of unknown abilities.”

“And yet here you are, sitting on your pretty behind. Thanks for the warning however. Miret hold. I’m joining you.. Poor Ro.. He must be terrified..”

“There it is again: dying for a certain nothing.”

“Listen you voice of doom. You are here for something I am sure. Unless you just like watching people die... In which case you can find something appropriate elsewhere. So cut to the chase…. Or is this your version of teaching!?

“I’m trapped. So are you. I’ll happily while the time away until the Nightmare grows tired of this.”

“I’m tired of this too. Perhaps I should lure the beast to you instead. At least you won’t be bored.”

“Real pain. Real wounds. Real-being-strangled-to-death.”

“Well I hope if Noah is ever in the same situation as Ro, he finds someone more willing to help strangers than you.”

“I could be persuaded.”

“To help? What’s the price? You want my first born this time?”

“No thank you. Raising one was enough damage for a lifetime. The old offer still stands: you spy on Noah, you report back to me, you keep quiet about it, and you get an extra scoop on top of the prior offer: a living Ro-shaped waste of life for your trouble.”

“Miret is there nothing I can do? Honestly? Some more pointed tips would be highly welcome at this point.” … “Yes, even if it’s an itty bitty baby of a nightmare. For Ro it isn’t itty or bitty.”

“He’s going to die, die, die, die, dieeeeeeee.”

“What would you do? You haven’t shown me one thing that says you can back up the talk.”

“I’ll drain it. But the very moment I draw from the Nightmare, it will home in on me. And then I will kill it… but why chance it, Pep? We can wait it out, gamble Ro’s life for a little safety, betray the creed of your goddess by sitting around dangling our legs-”

“You aren’t making the deal any more attractive by talking you know. Would have been better to stop at kill it.”

“Take it and I stop. Take it and save Ro. I am offering guidance in a journey. I am offering the inexplicable value of a clear conscience by saving a boy you’ve never met before today.”

“And who saves me from you? You are quickly becoming a nightmare all by yourself.”

“Leverage, Pep. Leverage. You have Noah’s ear. You have information you can barter. You have a long-term deal that will not expire anytime soon. Use it. Withhold from me. By the gods of Rhakros, I’m giving you advice on how to fuck me. I’m giving you a free consultation. I am beyond ever fuckin’ generous with this stupid fuckin’ deal and still you hold out like a nursing lioness. How many cubs do I have to kill before you go back into heat?”

“Do you trust me? Half your age and a quarter your strength?”

“A quarter? Someone’s brimming with overconfidence.”

“To deal with you as you take stabs at me with every statement? I better brim over... To stay at Noah’s side like you want me to? And to be willing to consider this for one bit? I’m learning to be shameless too I suppose. But answer the question. Do you trust me enough?”

“No. But I’m running out of options in both Emea and Idalos. I’ve known one dreamwalker in the past two seasons and she barely speaks the language, and that is only the tip of the shitberg when it comes to her item list of disagreeability. Alliances, Pep. Partnerships, agreements, deals, contracts, insert the fuckin’ synonym here. It’s the annoying way of the world, Pep.”

“I get it. I get it. So. I don’t trust you either. A teacher needs to be trusted. You know what.. Forget that. That was a pointless statement. What could you say to that?”

“Why would you ever trust a teacher?”

“Why wouldn’t you? Seriously.. what kind of teachers did you have?”

“There is a dynamic to tutelage. Why would you implicitly trust someone just because they’re drawing out your potential? Do you think they’re doing it out of the goodness of their own heart?”

“Well they get paid I suppose-

“Money.”

“-But they don’t teach wrong stuff, or worse dangerously wrong stuff, while they are still teaching.. Whatever their reasons..”

“I will teach you nothing wrong. Do you suddenly fuckin’ trust me now?”

“No. I tried that once, and got nearly choked to death.”

“Self-defense. Retaliatory retribution for an unjust ejection.”

“Well you were rude. And were collecting fire and fumes for who knows what. And destroying my pretty dreamscape into the bargain. Should I have waited around till you tried to burn me or something?”

“It’s your dreamscape. If anything happens, it’s because you will it.”

“And so you were posing? Fluffing yourself up to look larger? Then what was the point honestly Fiona? We were getting along fairly well till that point I think.”

“Pep, Pep, Pep, I spend every waking moment of my life showing courtesy to people I would very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very-”

“Really?”

“-Very, very, very, very much want to drive a dagger through their disagreeable hearts.”

“...”

“But I can’t for many, many reasons. I’m not doing anymore pretending here.”

“... Fair enough.”

“So I am going to outline this one more time in a manner I hope you can comprehend: Spy on Noah. Report back to me at a frequent arrangement to be determined-

“I get to choose how much to report. You get to choose how often. And what to teach me in return.”

“He is going to die.”

“Don’t worry, I’m actually listening. Unfortunately perhaps. I agree to the spying. But I decide how much to tell you. I think you’ll get less pleasure out of Ro’s death as compared to the peace from being able to keep tabs on Noah. Am I wrong?”

“Whereabouts, strange activities, irregularities, injuries. Anything concerning something or someone called a ‘Bertha’ - non-negotiable.”

“Examples of strangeness? I find him plenty strange all on his own. Any specific signs of craziness?”

“You’ll know. Trust me, you’ll know. Spy, help me with dreamwalking excursions. In turn, I will teach you what I know, defend you, and save this… Raft’s life.”

“Ro.”

“Whatever. Ro’s life. Big whoop.”

“Wait.. Help you? You need help? Mine? The same one who’s a hundredth of your mightiness? … You aren’t planning to poke Jesine’s ‘opposite’ in the eye are you? Or spy on Faldrun? Or rob a bank? Or something idiotic like that? Coz I need less craziness in my life, not more.”

“Do you really think I want your back robbing a bank? I need a, for a lack of a better word, fuckin’ buddy to watch my back. And since my other lady monosyllable is apparently out of reach, I’m settling for you. Emea only. Emea fuckin’ only. ”

“Ah. That I can do. Done. I agree.. Now please do your thing before Ro gets squashed or such?”

“Wait.”

“Now what? You need my blood promise or something?”

“You should give me some space. It’ll come for this general location once I’m done.”

“Can I do anything to help? At all?”

“I’m afraid you are, to quote a wise sage with many wise sayings, quite useless.”

“Right. So a different tree? A different area? Go to Ro?”

“I don’t micromanage cowering in fear. Do what you want.”

“Well teacher in that case perhaps I should stay right here and see how well you could protect me?”

“I bow to your survival instincts, my fuckin’ student.”

Ro Your Boat

The next fifteen bits or so were a blur for Pepper.

Time seemed to speed up suddenly, and she could only make sense of the scene in flashes, as if flipping through scenes in the sketchbook of a talented artist.

A curtain of water leaving the river behind, and heading to the stands of trees. Trees, splintering as the curtain passed through and around them, moving with surprisingly speed for its size. The flash of the beast’s four eyes, as they flickered in and out, in and out, in and out, in and out, like a macabre lighthouse.. The flash of claws gleaming through the curtain. A long, viciously barbed whip whistling out from the water, as it cut through foliage a lot further off than seemed possible..

It was hunting. Whatever Fiona was doing with that little ball of light, the beast had an idea of where she was, and it was now hunting her.

That was the last coherent thing she remembered in the distant flash of battle that followed; a jumbled mess of toppled trees and light and violent torrents of white water and submerged shrieking and claws and she couldn’t keep up after awhile. All she knew was that when the proverbial dust settled, all that was left-

Was a very wet clearing of destroyed trees.

And fiona on her hands and knees, panting like she had just run the whole length from the village to the city.

And a dying Nightmare, bared of its curtain, impaled upon a dozen spikes.

Now it was merely a shriveled, piteous thing without its protective shield; a spindly creature that looked like a mix between a stick insect and a skeleton. It shrieked a high-pitched sound, but now it was more pathetic than haunting. It was the last sounds of a dying animal, rather than the predatory dominance display of some emean otherbeast.

Pepper decided it wasn’t going to last much longer anyway, it was definitely no more a threat. Fiona, on the other hand, looked like she’d need help even standing. Pepper hastily began climbing down from the tree, which had somehow, improbably, survived. If this was what fighting an itty bitty monster was like, she didn’t want to meet it’s mama for sure. Fiona hd made killing it sound a lot easier than it looked like to Pepper.

Feet once more on the wet ground, Pepper squelched and slid her way to Fiona.

“Okay, I miss Qit now…” she heard Fiona mumbled to herself between breaths. Fiona didn’t even seem to notice her. Her eyes were very much focused on the ground and her efforts were very much focused on her lungs.

“What would Qit do right now?” Pepper scooted near her. Fiona’s hair was a bedraggled mess, with bits of twigs and leaves stuck in. Almost gingerly she began to pick them out. “You want to move to somewhere dry? Let me help you up?”

“Don’t touch me,” she said. Slowly, she pushed herself up to her feet. “Go find your Rick-”

“Ro.”

“Sure. Then we need to talk before this-” she gestured at the Nightmare, its shrieks beginning to fade to soft whimpers of raspy sound. “-expires.”

“Alright.” Pepper stood and motioned to Miret, who whizzed away to find the boy. She looked consideringly at Fiona, then spoke, “I don’t really want to admit it, but that was impressive. Just… Don’t say I told you so.” An unwilling smile glimmered on Pepper’s face before she turned away to follow Miret.

“Wait.” Fiona said. “The talk first. Big boy here isn’t gonna last.”

“All right, Miret can keep searching for Ro for now. Can we manipulate stuff now though?” Pepper turned back, gesturing at the sodden garments, “That’s gotta be uncomfortable.”

“No, no, no, we’re in the dying threads of the Nightmare.” Fiona said. She sighed and, for the moment, she looked older than the twenty or so arcs Pepper had pegged her at. Older and much, much more tired. “We meet once every seven trials. I come to your dreamscape. If it’s barred to me, the deal is off straight away. If I come to Rharne -and I will come to Rharne- there will be consequences. I take my deals seriously. I suggest you find it in you to do the same.”

“Since I can’t find you, or find the veil that you spoke off, that’s acceptable. But only till then. And I take my promises seriously enough. I’ll tell you if anything looks off to me. What if I need to contact you sooner?”

Fiona looked at her for a bit longer than she was comfortable with.

“You don’t. Just a blindspot we’re gonna have to live with for a while.”

“Alright.” Pepper pointed with her chin towards the Nightmare, which by now was slowly oozing into a weird muddy glob, incongruously streaked with silver streaks. “What about that? What if I see that sort again before we see each other. What can I do by myself for now?”

“Can’t you pull the same trick?”

“Which one? Run around like crazy? Abandon the dreamer to chat with another lurker instead? That’s all I managed to do this time..”

“The one,” Fiona said very, very tersely. “Where you rudely eject guests from the your lair.”

“Oh. Sorry about that. I didn’t know you wouldn’t actually try hurting me. No.. It only works for my own dreams I think.. For others I can only do small stuff.. Like healing myself, small manipulations..”

Fiona had already turned her back on her but she could feel the eye roll from her body language. “We’re done here,” she said, walking away. “Go soothe your conscience with your little boytoy.”

“Well if a Nightmare eats me or Noah in the meantime.. You wouldn’t feel a twinge of it yourself would ya..” Pepper called out to her back, not expecting any response. “And why can’t you find Noah’s dreams yourself anyway? You seem to find mine easily enough!”

She didn’t receive an answer to that. Fiona’s retreating back was all the answer she got.

Yet, she couldn’t help but feel that Fiona had done something -or taken something from her-

It would be a long time before she found out her would-be excuse of a mentor had stolen her Frequency.

So. Many. Good. Quotes. I won't lie: I'm just a little sad it wasn't entirely dialogue, but the third person epilogue was utilized well. Pepper and Zipper so much fun to read, though Pepper, I'd say to not be too worried about always responding to what Zipper says. In this instance, I think it would have been a more realistic choice for her to grudgingly accept Zip's terms to save the boy than waste time debating the conditions. Not that I didn't enjoy reading it, it just made the whole thread feel much less urgent than I might should have been. Otherwise? Super fun banter. There were so many fun quips and jeers - but the ending? Yessss. I gasped. haah.
