Fire in the Sky

Image

1st of Cylus, Arc 719

Praetorum swooped and spun in the air, his wings spread wide as he danced around his foes. All around him, fire and lighting raced and roared, casting an ever shifting pattern of light over his scales. His scythe lashed out, one, two, three times, and the dancing flames around him guttered out, their ithecal and human shaped figures dissipating into nothing as he sliced through them. There was a clap of thunder; anger, fear, hunger, echoing through each and every one of the figures that surrounded Praetorum.

How long Praetorum had been fighting, he could not have said. His armor, already painted black, had been scorched an even deeper charcoal; his shield bore fine, silver lines, spreading out in thin branches, evidence of the countless bolts of lightning that had struck it full force; and the cobalt of his scythe glowed with heat, like the embers that were left as a campfire died out. Far below, the ground itself was spotted with red; how much of it was flame, and how much of it fire, Praetorum could not have said. There was movement below, warriors and soldiers fighting against other creatures of flame and electricity; wolves and panthers and crocodiles and more, snapping and clawing at their foes, leaving streaks of sparks in the air behind them.

Far above, a spirit loomed. A creature of the darkest rain storm, all black clouds and thunder and lightning, a ball of flame pulsing blue where a heart would have been in a man. A large as a mountain, the creature merely watched and rumbled, content to allow the soldiers of its own making fight its battles for him.

Another such creature reached for him, white sparks dancing between its fingers, and Praetorum roared, the mighty flapping of his wings sending a gust of wind right through the creature, sending it flying backwards into its fellows in a tangle of flame. Whirling around, he slashed, cleaving an arrow of flame clean in half before it struck him, the blow continuing onwards to obliterate the fiery archer before it could draw another arrow.

There was a crack, and pain bloomed behind Praetorum's eyes as a bolt of lightning struck him from behind, piercing into his back and sending spasms of agony through his muscles. His shoulders convulsed, but he endured; arms trembling, fingers twitching, Praetorum reached behind his shoulder, and grasped the bolt. The movement sent a fresh wave of agony over his fingers, and he let out a cry of pain as he pulled it free, the wound smoking as he did so. No blood dripped from the newly made hole in his shoulder; the injury was seared close, the blood boiling without spilling in his veins.

Turning, he lunged at the creature wielding a sparking crossbow. it turned to flee, but not fast enough; the bolt in Praetorum's hand sank into its throat, and the creature melted away in a flicker of white, crossbow, bolts and all.

There were too many, Praetorum thought without despair. He was killing them as fast as he could and there were still too many of them, and more arriving every bit. But every moment he spent fighting up here was a moment those below could use to escape, or fight back, or whatever they chose. So Praetorum fluttered in the air, wings beating out a steady rhythm in time with his heart as he gripped his scythe in both hands.

He was ready for them. And they were utterly unprepared for him.

Re: Fire in the Sky

Bellowing out a challenge, Praetorum raised his shield as five of the creatures formed up. Three lightning and two fire, each held spears of their respective element in their 'hands'. He shifted to face them and they charged, forming a semi-circle around him, preventing him from being able to use his shield against all of them. Clever. But not clever enough. Praetorum raised his hand, and found the weapon he wielded now was not his scythe, but his brother's trident instead.

Instead of the normal gleam of steel and polished wood, Serinus's trident was now solid ice, glistening as it reflected and refracted the firelight. Praetorum's armour, too, had become ice, the chillness of it a sharp relief against his hide.

When the five creatures stabbed at him in unison, he did not bother to raise his shield to block them. Instead, he spun in the air, folding his wings behind his back to dive beneath their weapons, leaving them lashing out ineffectually at nothing. Flipping back right side up, he grasped his trident in both hands, and forced his weapon deep into the chest of the lightning creature on the far left, impaling it tightly on his weapon.
The creature screamed, but Praetorum stood firm, driving his polearm as far into its body as possible. The ice and lightning sizzled and sparked, but the weapon held strong, unmelting even as lighting tried to crackle down its length to lick at Praetorum's hands.

With a shout of exertion, Praetorum shifted his weight, and raised his trident above his head, enemy still caught on the tines. The change in balance had him wobbling for a moment, before Praetorum managed to stabilize himself with his tail and wings. Then, with all the force he could muster, he swung his trident, slamming the trapped foe into all four of his allies like he was using a warhammer. The impact sent vibrations all up his arm, and sent the four hit all flying backwards, falling down towards the ground. The poor electric bastard on his trident had gone limp, impaled on one of his ally's spears as well as Praetorum's trident.

Shaking the creature off his weapon, Praetorum turned, taking stock of the rest of his enemies. Many of them were keeping a wide berth from him now, seeming as wary as they could be without faces, or really any sort of discernible features. Above, even the spirit watching seemed to be holding its breath as the battle paused for a beat.

For a moment, Praetorum dared to hope that they might retreat, leave them in peace.

Then the creatures moved, alright. But not to retreat.

Re: Fire in the Sky

Stepping towards each other in threes or fours, the creatures reached out to join hands with one another. And where they touched, they began to meld together, fire and lightning coiling around each other to form something new, something that burned red hot and moved faster than the eye could see. There were screams coming from the merging creatures, of pain or of excitement, he couldn't tell. But the flames that licked from their faces were now laced with white lightning, and the crackle of the fire was backed by thunderclaps. Praetorum's wings fluttered nervously, and his grip tightened on his trident. Within trills, the creatures he was facing had gone from his height, to being near twelve feet tall, conjuring shields and swords and spears of flickering flame and jagged lightning. Praetorum gritted his teeth as they all turned towards him.

Three sweeps of his broad wings sent him soaring over their heads; Praetorum twisted in midair, wings snapping closer to his body, and he dropped into a dive, aiming for one of their heads, trident held out in preparation to strike. The creature turned, looking up, just in time for Prae to drive his trident into its skull, the sound of flame crackling almost like the snapping of bone. The trident sank deep, too deep for Praetorum to retrieve easily, so he didn't, letting go of his weapon as his foe began to fall.

As Praetorum spun into a dive, he snatched the spear of flaming lightning from the creatures hand, mindless of the way it burned his palm, and threw it with all his might. One, two, three enemies were pierced through by the bolt, their wispy death cries fading as they crashed to the ground. The sight seemed to trigger something in his remaining foes; one by one, they faded away, leaving nothing but static and embers behind.

Praetorum turned then, glaring defiantly at the spirit towering over them all. For a moment, it seemed poised to enter the fray itself, to bring its mighty fists down upon Praetorum and avenge its underlings.

Then, it let out a single, throaty chuckle, and then it too, faded from view.

Comments: Great combat scene - very well-written considering it was a dream, too, and those things tend to go crazy. Really like your detail and depth in writing action scenes so good job - enjoy your XP!
