Substitute Star

Saun 40, Arc 716
After the meeting with Daliane Andaris

“King Alexander and Lady Elaine are hiding in a house in a forest near the border of Alamere“, Lady Jane Andaris, the manager of Rynmere Theatre read aloud. “after the queen tried to kill them both. Everybody besides half a dozen of his most faithful warriors have abandoned the young king. The situation is desperate. The twin suns are about to set when suddenly there is a knock on the door. The guards rush to the door while Alexander and Elaine stay in the backroom. Lord Maximus who betrayed Alexander to the queen is there, asking for forgiveness and offering his help ...”

She broke off abruptly and looked intently at Tristan who looked back at her expectantly. They were sitting in the front row where the most important people in Rynmere usually sat when they felt like visiting the theatre and discussing the final rewrite and the premiere of Tristan’s play. At least he hoped they would be discussing that. The more he looked at Lady Jane, the less confident he became. Why was she staring at him like that?

“Well?” he asked her, finally breaking the silence because he really wanted to know what she thought of it. His heart started to beat very quickly, and he was suddenly sweating a little even though it really wasn’t that hot. He felt, he had to admit, just a bit nervous even though he wasn’t normally a very nervous man. What if … by Zanik, what if she hated the whole thing and decided that she didn’t want to show his new play at her theatre after all?

“It’s good”, she replied, and he breathed a huge sigh of relief. “But”, she continued, and the relieved look abruptly disappeared from Tristan’s face. “You rely too much on your star. Everything depends on Daliane. You are friends, I get it, and you wrote the role with him in mind, but what if he falls ill? What if he suffers from a terrible case of stage fright and doesn’t want to go out there? What will you do then? Rumour has it that King Cassander himself will attend the premiere. You need to be prepared Tristan. If this were a normal premiere, we could just postpone it or cancel it and apologize to the people that have already bought tickets, but you can’t just say to the king, ‘Sorry, our star is ill. Please come back in a couple of trials!’.”

“You should be honored that the king is even interested in your play”,
she informed him sternly. He nodded and then opened his mouth because he really wanted to tell her something, but she didn’t give him an opportunity to do so. When Lady Jane Andaris had something to say, there was no stopping her. “You are a relatively young and inexperienced playwright, Tristan. This could make you or break you. Do you understand what I mean?” She shut the book that contained Tristan’s script abruptly and informed him, “You need a substitute star in case Daliane is not available on the 96th of Vhalar!”

“You’ll pay for your crimes!” Valeria Macerys proclaimed and raised her wooden sword. She looked radiant with her shimmering brown hair and her silver armor that was of course not really made of silver. Mason Williams, one of her fellow actors, knelt on the stage in front of her, a piece of rope tied around his wrists. He was wearing something that could best be described as a potato sack, and his entire face was covered with fake blood. “You will never hurt my people again!” She brought her sword down on his neck. Mason let out a most terrifying scream, and then he fell and stopped moving.

Tristan who sat in the chair that was normally reserved for King Cassander (he just hadn’t been able to resist) held his breath for a moment, and then he rose to his feet and clapped his hands. Both actors abruptly turned around and stared at him. Tristan wasn’t bothered by those stares of course, but casually strode onto the stage and asked, “Mason, can I have a word with you? There’s something I’d like to discuss. Valeria …” He smiled at the young woman who would be in his new play. “… you were spectacular. I can’t wait to see you on the 96th!”

---

“What do you want to talk about?” Mason asked as they walked to the backroom where the actors got changed and relaxed before the show, wiping the fake blood off his face with a handkerchief as he did so. Tristan looked at the other man for a moment and wondered, “What’s that stuff made of?” Mason stopped wiping his face and looked at Tristan incredulously. “Is that what you wanted to discuss? Fake blood?” He shook his head before he admitted, “I have no idea. I never bothered to ask. The only thing I care about is that I can wash it off again easily after the show. Is there anything else?”

“In fact there is”,
Tristan said and opened the door for Mason. It couldn’t hurt to be polite and helpful in that situation, he thought. “You are aware that my play will premiere soon, aren’t you? I need somebody that will be able to take Daliane’s place in case something happens to him, and the first person I could think of was you. I’ve seen you in a few plays. You are good, and you are almost the right age as well.”

Mason walked over to his table (each of the actors had their own little space in the backroom), took the itchy potato sack off and put on a comfortable shirt. Tristan noted approvingly that it was a fashionable burgundy, just like his own. “You know that I prefer playing minor characters”, he informed him. “You’ll need to give me a good reason for why I should prepare for the lead role when I might never get the chance to actually be on stage. I’m a busy actor. I already have to rehearse for the play that Valeria and I are in.”

Tristan looked at Mason for a moment before he informed him slyly, “King Cassander. Fame. Money.” Mason laughed as he heard that. “Say no more. Just give me that script of yours.”

“So which scene are we rehearsing now?” Mason asked as he put on the cloak that King Alexander would be wearing. It was crimson with a golden hawk on it. He swung his fake sword a couple of times (using real weapons in a play posed too much of a risk), before he turned around and looked at Tristan who was watching him, arms crossed over his chest, once more.

“The one where King Alexander, Elaine and their last remaining warriors hide in the forest”, Tristan replied and pointed at the left side of the stage. “This is where the house will be standing. You are huddled in front of the fireplace because it’s rather cold outside and winter is almost upon you. Valeria? Would you come here, please?”

He looked at Valeria Macerys who would be playing Elaine. The young actress had already put on her costume, a pair of pants and a light blue blouse and wore her long dark hair in a practical ponytail. Elaine was a sky rider and a warrior first and a noble lady second. She wouldn’t be foolish enough to traipse around in the wilderness in a dress and high heels.

“Do you all have your copy of the script?” Tristan asked once the actors were where he wanted them to be.

“I think I already know my lines by heart”, Mason replied at which Tristan raised an eyebrow. The older man just smiled at him. His ability to memorize his lines very quickly was one of the things that set him apart from certain novice actors – like Tristan. “By the way, Lord Venora, shouldn’t you be standing in front of the stage and give us directions from there?” he asked as he noticed that the young noble had joined them on the left side of the stage where the imaginary house was.

“I’ve decided to play a small role as well”, Tristan revealed and smirked as he put on a suit of leather armor. After a certain adventure that he’d rather not repeat anytime soon he had gotten used to wearing armor and even grown to like the way he looked in it. All the leather made him appear rather tough. He liked that. “I thought about playing the villain or something like that, but Lady Jane convinced me that taking on such an important role and writing the play and directing parts of it would be too much work, so I’ll just be one of your men.”

Actually Lady Andaris had been more concerned about his lack of proper acting experience, but Mason and Valeria didn’t need to know that, he decided. “Are you all ready?” he asked. Mason Williams, Valeria Macerys and Daniel Stone who would be playing the antihero Lord Maximus whose resemblance to a certain tax collector was of course purely coincidental and who had arrived a little later than the other two nodded.

And then Tristan started to sing because the play wasn’t just a play, but occasionally also a musical with lots of songs (most of them written by Tristan’s unfortunately much more talented brother, Teddy Venora) so as to make it more appealing to Zanik to whom it would be dedicated.

It was a rather simple melody. Tristan had tried to compose and sing a complicated song at first but found out that his voice just didn’t want to obey him (although it was still a very nice voice, everything considered, he thought) and he didn’t have Mason’s or Daniel’s (or his little brother’s) range.

“Who can it be now?”

“Who can it be now?”

“Who’s knocking on the door?”

“Don’t make a sound!”

“Maybe he’ll turn around!”
