123rd Vhalar.

cos it always reminds me of Nir'wei, and seems appropriate now.

Wrapped up against the cold, she made her way to the Lodge where Nir'wei worked. She hurried there and, once she arrived she had asked the friendly young woman (Poppy, she thought she was called) if Nir'wei was available to speak to please. She reminded her of her name and then stood, waiting. Walking through the streets on the way here she had wondered just how she was going to do this, how she was going to actually tell him. She had so very few friends and she knew that he was one of them, yet she found herself strangely nervous. From the first time that she and he had met, her slave status had sat between them, obvious and overhanging everything. Or so it had seemed. He wanted to fix it and he was frustrated that he could not and, she thought, he was a little frustrated that she did not see things from his point of view. Although, that might have been her putting ideas on to him, projecting notions which she believed others must have. But standing there, she felt quite sure that, more than anything else, her friend would be pleased for her.

When Nir'wei arrived, Faith was indeed there but, even at a glance she looked different. Her shoes were flat, her clothes subdued and comfortable and her hair was brushed and tied back in a simple ponytail. She wore warm gloves and scarf and a thick cloak and she held in her hands a piece of carefully folded parchment.

When he arrived, Faith saw him and she immediately moved to hug him. She looked different, tired and a bit paler than usual, like she was upset about something, which she tried never to show as being, but yet her eyes shone with an expression that was simple delight. "Nir'wei! Oh, I am sorry to interrupt your work, I am, but I had to come and tell you because I thought that you would very much want to know", stepping out of the hug she gave him, she handed him the papers which, fundamentally, were her slave papers, recinded.

"I'm free, Nir'wei. No longer a slave. Just... free", she said, and waited to let that news sink in, expectation, excitement and delight on her face.

Working around Jacadon made it difficult to feel the heat - which was funny in its own way, because they were all so cold towards most of the handlers. Gaspard had somehow made connections with a few of them, to the point that they seemed to actually enjoy his company - really Nir'wei wasn't sure what enjoyment would look like on a Jacadon, but it was several steps above what any other handler, barring the Jacadon's own rider, could achieve. Still, withdrawn as they were, scrubbing the scaled beasts down and drying them off actually made Nir'wei feel like he was about to sweat. Sweat, when Zi'da was days away and he stood practically outside in a sorry state of attire! Laughable!

Poppy caught him just as he was finishing off, borrowing one of the fluffy towels for use on himself to clean his hands. "Faith's here for you again," she remarked casually as she passed, as if commenting on the weather. There was some knowing smile on the face and the way she looked at him, though, was practically conspirational. "If she keeps coming over and asking for you, I'm going to have to start wondering if there's somethin' going on there." He shot her a hard glare - she could keep such thoughts to herself! Unfortunately she didn't seem to get the message... or if she did, it just made her grin even more as she turned on the spot and skipped off again without another word. Nir'wei obligingly finished drying himself off and unrolled his sleeves before heading back into the Lodge. She'd better not be back to ask for him to hunt down another Gorde!

As was now normal he supposed, they immediately moved in for a tight hug. Since Faith was wearing something extra-warm - and even to his horrible sense of fashion, odd for her, although by no means was he going to complain - he gave her an extra squeeze. "Oh don't worry, at this point you know you might as well just walk in rather than stand here in the lobby like a lost little girl." It almost brought another laugh, thinking just how often he had to remind Faith that she was quite free to do and say as she wished around him. Admittedly, it was a little sad as well, but she was learning... soon, at least here, she'd be able to act a little more human and a little less slave. Who knew, maybe with time she'd... she'd...

He didn't break the embrace, he refused, he didn't need to see the papers. He leaned back and stared down at her for a moment in complete and utter shock, mouth hanging open, eyes wide... until the corners of his mouth turned and he screamed loud enough that it sent Poppy running. "What's going on? What's going on?!"

Nir'wei couldn't hear her. He was busy spinning around on the spot with Faith in tow, laughing in pure ecstasy. "HAHA, YOU DID IT!" Why didn't matter, how didn't matter, but she'd done it! There weren't words to describe the happiness he felt for her, there really was nothing quite like freedom. For her of all people it must have been such a shock. Nobody he'd met had ever embodied the slave mindset more than Faith; she'd gone so far down the hole that he'd wondered if her eyes had adjusted to the darkness down there and she'd become blind to the light beyond. Oh, how wrong he'd been to ever doubt her.

After endless laughing and dancing Nir'wei calmed, somewhat. Enough to fire off a few quick blessings and thanks to the Immortals themselves. Several blessings actually. "Oh Ashan, thank you. Hahaha, thank you!" It shamed Nir'wei a little that he'd prayed so, for Faith's eventual freedom. "Thank you for spreading independence and liberation, unshackling us from our limitations... gods, Faith, that's..." he stumbled, suddenly realizing that all this celebrating had left him so breathless he actually had to lean on Faith to avoid bending over double to get some air back in his lungs. "That's unbelievable, it's wonderful! You must be so happy, I mean, you're free! You need to tell me everything, haha, everything! How did it happen, what will you do now? Do you have a place to stay, do you have a job? What about your mas-- oops, sorry, ex-master now, hah!" His questions came faster than Faith could possibly answer and he soon realized that himself as he swallowed and caught his breath. "Blessed Ashan, I'm sorry. I'm just... GODS. It's amazing news and you... it must be quite a shock."

Padraig had welcomed her into his home, given her socks and a blanket and just let her talk. Lady Elyna had hugged her in delights and Malcolm had smiled in pleasure. But not one of them had screamed like Nir'wei did and, as much as she was amazed at his reaction, from him she had equally almost expected it. Of course, she didn't know she expected it until he did it, but then there it was and her face lit in unequivocal delight as he reacted like that. That was part of what she really liked and admired about Nir'wei was just how honest he was in everything he did.

So, spinning on the spot with him, she could not help but laugh aloud and she was more than happy to spin and dance with him. He then gave his vocal thanks to the Immortal Ashan before leaning on her like he was about to pass out. She had tears of delight running down her cheeks and she was out of breath, also, although she had a good endurance and breath control. "Oh, you sound like you are going to pass out! Sit down, for the love of the Immortals and the Seven, sit down", she laughed and sat on the floor, pulling him down to sit next to her as he fired a barrage of questions at her, one after another. She smiled up to Poppy and shook her head "I'm sorry. We're fine, just, good news", she explained with an apologetic smile to the friendly young woman.

"I will tell you all of it", she promised him "My owner got a letter from his cousin, who I had worked with and who suggested that I would be a better ally free. So he asked me if I wanted to be free and I said yes. So he freed me." Wide eyed, she looked at Nir'wei and the enormity of what Tristan had done for her was evident on her face "He freed me, Nir'wei. I knew that I can do good, really do good now. Serve people, you know, help them. So, I left. I went to my friend Padraig's house", she couldn't hide the slight blush as she spoke that name. "He is my tutor. Was my tutor, but we had become friends and he had told me that I could always go there if I ever ran away. I would never run away, but it turns out he meant it, he bought me a bed and curtains and a wardrobe and gave me my own space and a key. I have a key."

Other things? Well, if she was honest she wasn't entirely sure yet. "I haven't really thought about much more than I know I want to help people, to serve the people of Andaris, maybe Rynmere if I can, but I'm not sure how to so I need to think about that. But my head is whirling and it is all just so new. But I had to come and find you and tell you. I need to say something to you."

Earnest silver eyes gazed at him and she took ahold of his hands "You are my friend and I love you. You have, since the first time we met, cared about me as a person and tried to help me see that I can be free. You are one of the people who made me realise that freedom was a possibility and that I might be able to do more good within it. I will always be grateful to you for that and I need you to know that. Because as a free woman I can tell you that I will always be there if you need me, something that I could not promise as a slave. But it is a promise made from one friend to another." She didn't do emotional much, often or well and so she couldn't help it when she added "I'm only little, but I'm a scrapper and short help is better than no help at all, isn't it?"

She shot him a grin and then looked around and shrugged "I guess I'll keep my jobs, but I want my life to make a difference Nir'wei. A real difference. I'm going to have to think about it and do something good"

He giggled giddily to himself and waved a hand dismissively, like a drunk being told to go home. "I'm not gonna pass out, I promise! Haha.. oof!" At her continued behest he finally sat down next to Faith, sucking in great big gulps of air in an attempt to alleviate the abrupt light-headedness rushing through his skull. Poppy, noticing this and chuckling softly at Faith's apologies, nodded and turned back to give them both some privacy. If Nir'wei could speak, he would have thanked her. Unfortunately all understanding of speech had turned to mush inside the Sev'ryns head, so now all that came from his mouth as he tried to explain his feelings were a gabble of unintelligible words strung together between bouts of laughter and the occasional hug. "I... I just... my god, it's... ahh." It was nothing short of a miracle that Faith could find the will to calm the overexcited young man long enough to tell her story.

Her tale did nothing but raise questions the more he listened and - while he obediently waited until she'd finished - several times he opened his mouth and raised a hand as if to stop her, but thought better of it. "I don't understand, why would his brother want you freed? Did... did he really care so much for your wellbeing that he decided to set you free, for good?" He had to admit, he'd never liked Faith's master. He'd never met the man, that he knew of. He'd only heard vague stories and of course Faith never talked about him in a negative light, it'd be foolish to do so even if she showed a complete disdain for the man. The fact that he kept her as a slave was reason enough to dislike him, though - no matter how honest and true he might have otherwise been, ownership over another being like Faith would always be a permanent stain on their image. However, knowing that they cared enough to set their slave free, well... he still couldn't know his true intentions and therefore couldn't quite say he respected the man, but his view had certainly changed.

She had a place to stay, then. Padraig. A friend, who could provide her with a home and protection. He smiled and nodded eagerly - it was good to know she had a safety net to fall back on, not that he ever had any doubts that Faith, the smartest and funniest slave he'd ever met, would ever have trouble making friends besides a homeless hobo like him. He looked deep into her eyes, searching for something... more, as she spoke, but he wasn't quite as adept at reading the more intimate features of people's faces as he thought he was. "I'm really glad," he said sincerely with the corners of his mouth pulling a little wider.

She knew what she wanted to do, too. "You've been thinking about this for a while, haven't you." It wasn't even a question. "Helping the people of Andaris... hah, it's no small task, I'll tell you that much. You've seen Lowtown." She'd even helped Nir'wei and that boy Andraska rebuild parts of it after the civil war, nailing together the front doors of houses and watching as the people struggled to rebuild their lives in the wake of the tragedy. "But, yes. Best to take it slow, agreed... and of course you know I'll help you in any way I can, hah. Well, you'd be helping me too of course. Seems we've both got quite a few ideas in common." His joyous smile had turned almost conspirational at the thought.

That rueful smile faded just as fast as it appeared and he nearly tugged away one hand so he could wipe the sleeve across his eyes as she started to speak from the heart in a way he'd never expected to hear from her. "Faith, I never doubted you. As a free woman, I hope you won't just be able to do good for this city and everyone in it... but I hope you'll be able to do good for yourself, too." His grip tightened around hers. "I want you to be happy. I want you to do what you feel is right, I want you to be free to pursue your dream, that's all I want. Hah, if your dream is to make Rynmere a better place then so be it. If you ever need an extra hand, you know where your friend Nir'wei can lend one." He leaned forwards and bumped foreheads with her affectionately. "Heh, besides, making a difference sounds like as good an aspiration as any to have."

"You know," he said after a moment of thought, "you could always just keep coming with me and everyone else down to Lowtown. The city's getting cold in the winter, so few people have shelters... most people have at least the remains of houses to shield themselves from the bad weather but the rest of them are hanging around abandoned shacks, some of them don't even know how to start a good campfire. I'll build the campfires if you make them a hot meal? I mean it might not be much with Zi'da on the horizon and talk of heavy snow, but..." he smirked, adding with a jokingly-mocking tone, "it's only a little, but short help is better than no help at all, isn't it?"

She sighed and shook her head, sadness evident in her expression as she did "He realised that his cousin was right and that he loves me. But Nir'wei, I can't be in love with him. I love him, I do, and I am so grateful to him, but he is... he branded me. It was.. I should get past it, I know. But I can't. I love him, and I want him to be alright and I am so grateful to him. Please, try to think kindly of him?" That would help, she thought to herself, if she could change people's opinion of him, because Tristan at his core was a kind man and she would always hold an enormous debt of gratitude to him.

But their conversation moved and she nodded "I want to do good. Real good, Nir'wei. Not just give voice to it, not just clam to be. I want to help people and help them to help themselves." She had rarely been more earnest than when she spoke just then. Except, of course, when she spoke to Nir'wei of her feelings for him and her face lit in delight when his forehead bumped against hers "I had never dreamed of freedom until I made friends. Never. But now that I have it, I want to make you proud and yes, I will also make sure that I am happy. I have. Padraig is.. I think, no, that isn't true." She breathed in and looked at Nir'wei. How was it that this man, she wondered, she could talk to about her feelings in a way that she could to the person she felt them for? She knew the answer, in truth. Nir'wei was like a brother to her, and, like a brother, he was no threat, no hidden agenda. If she needed him, he would be there without question and she felt the same for him.

"I love him, am in love with him. I have been for some time, but I would not allow myself to accept that or even recognise it. He feels the same for me", strange, she considered, how she knew that and yet neither of them had said it. "But we are moving forward with small steps. He bought me a bed, and curtains and bedding and a wardrobe and we have sectioned off a part of the room so that is mine and we are getting me a bedroom made. Slowly. Carefully. Gently. He is... he is wonderful. Quirky, clever and acerbic, the cleverest man I have ever met and Nir'wei, when he looks at me I feel safe. And that is the bit of this that is mine. Just mine."

But to help people? She nodded her head and then frowned. "It is like.. it is always so reactive. What if we tried to do something proactive Nir'wei? We could work together, set up a charity ~ feed people, but we need to get money to do it. That's the bottom line." She considered it and then looked at him with an idea forming in her mind "Nir'wei, what if we opened a really expensive restaurant. Like. Really expensive. I can cook. I can cook wonderful food, the King has hired me for a function. I could cook and we could use the profits to help people. Could you grow ingredients? Tend animals, grow vegetables? We could... Nir'wei we could make a real difference, not just stick a bandage. Does that make sense? Could we do it?" She looked at him with hope and, for one of the first times in her life, aspiration shining in her silver eyes.

His mouth turned into a tight, thin line. "I... mmh." An odd, uncomfortable noise left his mouth, like he'd just realized he was sitting on something sharp. "I don't know what you know, I guess. If you think he's a good man then I'll take your word for it." Of course Nir'wei held his own reservations. Those he could never release. But for Faith, at the very least, he could try and take a more open view to it all; after all, he had to be doing something right, to garner Faith's love even through the branding and other demeaning tasks he'd likely put her through. "I just hope you're not... seeing him for something else than he really is." It was all good and well, turning the other cheek at times like these, but he couldn't help but hope that Faith wasn't turning a little too far. Back when she'd been a slave, she'd stood up in his defense. Had she fallen for some facade she believed in? Surely not, hopefully. She'd said herself that she couldn't be in love with him.

Free from her Master, it was such a wonderful thing to see Faith finally becoming more passionate. Perhaps she'd always been this way. He'd never seen it behind the quiet smiles and pristine etiquette she practically breathed wherever she went. Had servitude masked away her true feelings all this time? A question he'd never find an answer to, but one that gripped his mind and dug its claws deep, refusing to release itself no matter how he shook. "You want to be the true force of good in this city, don't you," he asked with a soft smile. "Not just a spokesperson for it, not just another face who talks about the good of the common people. You want to be the person down on the front lines, handing out food to the starving. Ha, you and I have that much in common. How long have you felt this way, though?" he interjected in her pause.

"Sounds like you're doing more than good for yourself!" She'd found more than just a new place in life, she'd found someone else to share it all with. "You know, for someone that's never owned a piece of furniture in their life, being given all this... that's anything but a small step." He didn't mean to step on her parade or make objections - in the wake of the shock of her release, he was still coming to terms with everything, and the fact that she'd already found her way into the world, set herself up, found love and security, it... well, every time he thought he'd broken free and nothing else could surprise him, Faith managed to outdo herself just a little bit more. "I hope everything goes well for the two of you. Hah, sounds like things couldn't be much better anyway."

Experiencing freedom for the first time in her life. Falling in love. Getting a house, a job, a life. On top of all that, Faith wanted to start up a charity. At first, he wanted to suggest that they could do everything that Faith wanted to do without the need of creating an organization. However... the thought of opening a restaurant and using its money to help feed the poor, that was something far beyond the occasional plate of food, oh yes. "I may not know anything about tending vegetables but I can damn learn about it." Slowly, but surely, a wide grin grew over his face, likely to mirror Faiths. "Not only that, but I'll help teach others how to do it too. You can teach them how to cook, if you want! We can give food to the people who need it... and we can give them a way to make their own food so they'll never need us again." He felt like bouncing. "We can give them jobs. Train them how to be cooks, farmers, anything! Help them make their own money, get their own houses. Together we can be the driving force that picks every hungry, homeless person in this city and gives them a home, a job, a place in the world. "And..." his eyes widened abruptly. "I'll use the wages for this season to buy whatever supplies we need. One thousand two hundred nel."

Over the course of time, Faith had grown quite adept at psychology and at understanding people, but it was fair to say that she had no idea just how skewed her opinion was of the men, not just one man, who had owned her. But then, it was unsurprising that she had such, for it had been trained into her from a young age; as a child she had been taught to thank the people who trained her, even what that training was violent and brutal. As an adult, she had taken those behaviours and internalised them to such an extent that she didn't even realise that she was doing it. So when Nir'wei suggested that she might not be seeing her former owner for who he was she considered it and frowned ~ a small and thoughtful expression which told of her thinking about it. He wasn't the first person to suggest that, although he was the first to suggest it so openly, but a few times when she had been talking to Padraig, he had raised an eyebrow or questioned a few of the things which Faith had not even thought were strange. But then, things with Padraig were complicated and there was no doubting that to her. But if Nir'wei thought the same then maybe she needed to look at it more closely. There were so many things, she considered, which she had to look at. One at a time and small steps.

Nir'wei was pleased with her idea and Faith beamed in delight. How long, though? Her silver eyes were lit with passion, determination and a hundred other emotions. That was an easy question, she knew, one which she could answer without thinking about it. "All my life, Nir'wei. I've always wanted to do good, do right. Service. To me, it's service, but to a cause. To the people who need it. I know it sounds silly, but it might just make the difference to the person who might one trial save the world. I.. all my life. But I have not been in a position to act upon it before now, so there was no point to trying to rail against where I was or what I was, just to be content and do my very best. But now?" Shrugging, she couldn't explain what happened now because it was all just too big. Too overwhelming.

On the subject of Padraig she looked at Nir'wei and smiled. It was almost a shy expression as she spoke of him "He made me breakfast, bought me a bed and gave me this, look!" Reaching into her pocket she pulled out a key. "And he asks nothing from me, just the opposite. I know how he feels, but we just... we talk. He listens, mostly, in truth. I feel very cared for. It's very different", maybe that was what Nir'wei was talking about, she thought with a raise of an eyebrow, when he suggested that perhaps she saw Tristan in an unrealistic light. Maybe it would be worth to think about that and examine it further; she thought maybe the thing to do was to look at specific instances where she believed that Tristan's behaviour was different to what Padraig's would be in the same circumstance and look at why. That was logical and ordered, so she put it to one side and would pick it up later.

Because in this conversation, she had more important things to focus on and Faith watched as Nir'wei beamed with delight and made his feelings known. She nodded, absolutely overjoyed at the way that he reacted, the way that his vision and hers melded together so well and Faith gave a prayer of thanks to Famula for the heart and soul of this man before her. On the trial where he died, and may that be long in the future, she prayed, Famula would see a beautiful soul. And money? Well, Faith had an idea there, too. "We'll need set up costs. I have an idea, Nir'wei, and it's crazy. Just crazy. Want to hear it? Of course you do." She bit her lip, breathed in and then spoke "I think we put in every copper we can. The two of us. I don't have much, but a little. If there is anyone else that you know who might be involved, them too. I'd like to ask Padraig ~ he's a chemist and we could use his skills to make wine and fruit juices and things. But then, once we have the people and the money I think we go and take that to the King and the Empress and ask them to sponsor us. To match funds. To give us a royal seal. Once we have that", and yes, she sounded quite sure that they'd get it "We go to the head of each of the seven families and say look. Look at this money we have. From the king. You can sponsor us too, if you like. But we're clear that this is our venture. I've met the King and the Empress twice now, I think they'll help. Does that sound crazy?" It seemed to be a week for doing impossible things, she thought, so why not.

He didn't know whether to be pleased or concerned with her answer. On the one hand, it was wonderful news! Devotion to a cause was the purest form of devotion, one that Nir'wei could share in a way. He let that be known with a proud smile. "It doesn't sound silly at all. You treat everyone the same and you help them all as best as you can, because you don't know who they might grow up to become... or who they once were." It was one of the joys of meeting new people, after all. To think that you might impact their lives, to help them on the right path, so that they will one day go on to help others just as you did for them. An endless, self-propagating loop, slowly expanding as it goes, changing the lives of thousands. "You couldn't do it before because you were held back by your master. All the good you did to the world went to him, only him. Well, mostly him." He let slip a light chuckle as he thought back to their first meeting and that banged-up wagon. "Now you're free to do good to everyone. Everywhere." His smile broadened. "You've opened the opportunity to yourself to help the world, and it sounds like you're more than willing to take it. And if you don't feel content, you don't feel like you're doing what you want to do... then you can always do something different."

She'd always felt this way. She'd always wanted to help people, but she'd never mentioned it, never even off-handedly. It had to be because of her enslavement. He was no psychologist, he hardly considered himself competent in understanding the intricacies of the human brain, but it was staring him right in the face. Her life of enslavement had held her back from achieving her dreams and aspirations. They'd held her back from being the real her. How much would she change... would it be for better or for worse?

He'd unconsciously turned away from her and stared off into the middle distance in mid conversation. The glittering of her key pulled his attention back. "So you really have moved in with him, huh?" He had to admit, he was rather surprised she'd never even mentioned him before, this man that had immediately and unquestioningly taken her into his care, bought her all these things, never asked for anything back. Nir'wei might not know anything about this man, whoever he was... but he could only guess that he was either one of the most kind-hearted men in this city, or he was madly in love with Faith. "He sounds perfect for you. Maybe now you'll start learning what it's like to be a normal person, eh?" he teased. Little did he know how truthful that statement was.

He'd unwittingly opened the floodgates of the plans she'd hatched for arcs, maybe more. She blurted them out so fast and with such excitement he actually had trouble understanding parts, but the general gist was all he needed. "Everything I have and everything I earn from here on out, I'll make sure benefits our cause together; that you have my guarantee on." He'd been meaning to find a way to avoid hauling around all the nel he'd earned from his benefits at the Lodge anyway. Without a home to return to every night, robbery was a very real threat that he'd managed to avoid quite easily so far thanks to the virtue of living with very little worth stealing in the first place. Investing it into a business and charity, one with the assurance of a friend by his side and hopefully several more backing it, sounded like a brilliant place to put it all. "The King? The Empress?" He didn't really know what the difference between them was, but he could guess why they needed the visit. "You don't think we'll have enough money to make the place suited for the high society." Well, in a way it made sense. "Do you really think they'll give their seal, and their money?" He was more nervous than skeptical. "Do you think... we'll have to do things for them, to earn it?" That was the biggest worry of all. The idea of being owned by the crown, by the King himself. "What if he forces us into closing down the charity? Asks for a cut of the profits from the business?"

It was all incredibly unnerving. "I'm all for it, absolutely. But we need to make sure that this is our venture. We have to make sure that we remain in control." Nir'wei met her with a level stare. "You said it yourself, this is our cause. We both need to make sure, here and now, that we never lose sight of that. The charity is what's important... giving to the people, helping those who need help, that's what's important. No matter how much money they give us, we never stop doing that. Agreed?" As soon as she affirmed - which he was sure she would, since this had been her idea after all - he let a little excitement break out. "Alright, we need to make a plan on how we'll see them. When they give us their seal and the investment, it can all go towards the restaurant, I've got some spare wages hanging around and I'll get us a place outside of the city as well, just beyond the walls. Haha, our little base. Headquarters. Whatever you wanna call it. Sound good?"

Comment:
I absolutely loved this thread! I love seeing Faith’s reaction to her newfound freedom and I loved getting a glimpse at who Nir’wei was and how happy he was for her. You both gave a lot of insight into your characters’ personalities and drives. This was such a well collaborated interaction, and there was only the odd structure problem, like clam instead of claim or missing the word ‘is’ in an sentence. Nothing major that would mean point deductions. Great work!
