It was funny how the right person could make you feel like you were burning up; from just a look. By the time the Knight Captain, her lover, had left her behind and shut the door behind him, Elyna had thought she’d lose control if he didn’t return to the bed he’d left behind, or leave. He’d chosen to leave and she’d slumped back, no less confused then she had been in the middle of the night. One bit he was suggesting that their relationship, if it could be called that, was bought to an end, the next he was laughing and reminding her that he warranted an invitation to an imagined wedding. The young woman stared at the ceiling, watching the shadows cast by the moving curtains. What did he want from her? His actions and his desire were clear and simple. Maybe they should never speak, it just made life complicated.

It was a break later that she stumbled to her feet, reclaimed her stockings and boots and checked the room to make sure nothing had been left behind. She picked out the freshest fruit, eating the grapes and sliding two apples and an orange into the pouch attached to her belt. First though, she checked that the tiny wooden dragon Malcolm had won for her, was safely buried at the bottom. Hair nearly braided back once more she made her quiet exit from the inn and stepped out into the busy morning streets of Andaris. She had a couple of breaks to return to her rooms, collect her belongings and get to the dock ready to sail. It was another, bright, clear day and the sun was going to be warm again once it had risen into the sky. For now, the morning came with a chill.

Elyna hadn’t gone far though, when she heard shouting from one of the stalls, and a high pitched screaming. Curious she turned her feet and approach, a crowd was gathering and she slid through the wall of shoulders, watching as woman with long dark hair and a sharp profile hissed and waved her fingers at a youth, who could have been her son. They stood at a cart that cages hung from, in most of them, owls, falcons and even a peregrine eagle fluttered and cawed, distressed. A snow owl tried spreading it’s wings, but found that it couldn’t, leaping from its perch with a scream

“Gerent, catch it! Catch it you idiot,” the woman stamped her foot before scuttling back and out the way. The young man, on his hands and knees made a dive, skidding over the cobbles as the crowed peered and craned, trying to see what he was trying to catch. There was a shriek, form a bird, or the boy, Elyna couldn’t tell, but there was also the sound of a snap and the boy shuffled back, gripping the body of young hawk with two rough hands, one wing flapping hard against his face, so he lent back, cursing and offered up the bird to his mother.

“Take it then, put it back in the bloody cage!”

“Gerent, you idiot,” she kicked him in the thigh, reaching down to grab his dark hair and pull him to his feet. Trying to defend himself, the boy lifted the Hawk as a shield, and Elyna’s feet moved before she could stop them, “wring its neck! You’ve broken its wing!”

“NO!” Elyna tripped over the last person in the crowd and straightened. The woman looked down her long hooked nose and raised a brow.
“Excuse us Miss,” the woman was smart enough to recognise the well-made quality of Elyna’s borrowed green dressed, “I’ve got no time, nor food for a broken bird.”

Gerent wrapped his arm around the animal and turned a pair of dark brown eyes on the Noble woman and she sighed.

“I’ll take it,” Elyna opened her pouch and pulled out the nels. She was an idiot, but she had a soft heart. She held out the money.

“You can’t be serious?” The woman moved to stand infront of her son, as though protecting her. It was Elyna’s turn to raise a brow.

“You don’t want the money?”

“It’s a trick, you’re going to hand me to the guards!”

“I’m trying to buy the hawk,” Elyna struggled to keep her voice low and level.

“What’s the catch? What use could you have for a hawk with a broken wing? It needs killing.”

“Just give me the bird!” She was tired because she hadn’t slept and she was achy and dizziness was threatening once again, she had no patience and she was loosing her temper. A few folk in the crowd shuffled back, putting space between her and them.

It was Gerent who reluctantly held out the Hawk and Elyna collected it, holding it by the legs and trying to tuck it under her arm without bending either of its wings. It was lighter than the apples in her pouch and she waved the coin at the horrible woman, “here, take it.”

When the woman still stood, speechless and unmoving, Elyna forced the money into the youths clutches and spun, marching away from the stall and the people surrounding it. What was she going to do with a bloody Hawk?

The animals heart was beating so hard that she could feel it through her bodice. But slowly it calmed down. She smuggled it into her rooms and set it down on the bed, only for it to try and fly away. With a sigh, Elyna grabbed her bag, and filled it with her toiletries, sewing equipment and spare clothes. She fastened her sword and belt around her waist and turned back to the Hawk who had given up trying to fly and stood, swaying on the bed. It had left her a mess of presents all over the sheets and she groaned, without time to clean them before her departure.

Tipping out all her spare fabric, from the fabric case she kept it in, she dropped the dark material over it’s head and it stilled instantly in the make-shift hood. She wrapped a strip of leather around it’s feet and collected it up, with jesses held in her bare hand. Hands that were already scratched form her journey back to her rooms. Bird on her wrist, leather securely gripped and bag thrown over her shoulder, the Skyrider turned to leave. It was then she noticed the letter under her door. She swore and set the bag and bird down collecting the parchment and breaking the seal of Burhan. If her Mother had something to tell, she rather return home armed and prepared.

Elyna, my dearest daughter

You’re only daughter Ma, Elyna rolled her eyes. Then her heart slowed in her chest and she sank back, leaning against the table before her legs gave away beneath her.

I am delighted to hear of your imminent return home and have good news for you. You have long been aware that I have sought an appropriate match for you and I believe that an arrangement will soon come to fruition. A date has been agreed for the 5th Trial of Sa’un for your happy union. I love you dearly Elyna, and know that you hold reservations against marriage, but you are too young to waste your life alone. I’m unsure what wedge has driven between you and your brother, or the nature of your disagreement, but you have been hurt. This I know for certain. Trust in me to have found a husband of appropriate temperament to match your own. You might think I’m distant, or foolish and fussy here back in Burhan. But this is your home, and I know your heart better than you know yourself.

I hope that you will have an opportunity to meet your Husband during your return to us. It is my sincerest wish, that your concerns and fears are allayed by this unusual opportunity.

There is much to discuss, and I wish you a safe and speedy return.

Your loving mother,

Ps. Please don’t bring that red dress, it makes you look ill .

Elyna folded the letter and slid it into her bag. She collected the bird again and turned, stepping out into the day once more. She made her way towards the docks, reeling. The sun was too bright and too hot on her face. Her eyes itched, her bodice was too tight. How was this happening? She’d known it was coming and still, it was like a bolt of thunder from the blue sky. Some point in the future. She’d imagined her marriage to be some distant point….but no, the 5th trial of Sa’un. What was she going to do? Intent on making it to the ship, she didn’t notice the shouts in her direction as Katheryn called after her. She concentrated on the spray coated stones of the docks and trying to spy the right ship. Which one was it again? How was she getting to Burhan?

Katheryn tapped her on the arm and Elyna turned, blinking and without recognition.

“Elyna? You look like you’ve seen a ghost? Are you alright? Is it the poison, Ben said you were recovering well?”

Katheryn was on the docks? Elyna felt her heart sink through her boots, what was left of it anyway. Sure enough, behind the dark-haired knight she could pick out more familiar faces. Malcolm wouldn’t be far away.

“Why are you bleeding?” Katheryn reached out to touch her hand and the scratches from the Hawk claws and Elyna swallowed.

“Busy morning,” she forced a faint smile and glanced at the bird, covered in what was an unfinished pillowcase.

“Do you need to sit down?”

“No…I need to…I’m getting a ship back home, I’ll get a glove for the monster when I’m on the ship” she turned to survey the shining waters and scowled as the light danced in her eyes.

“You look awful,” there was only concern in her voice and Ely could see that the rest of the usual crew were gathering, curious. It was clear that the Knight didn’t believe her and the woman turned, scanning the docks for her Captain, surely he would know what to do?

The morning had dragged on slowly and an odd report had called the group down to the shore, taking them to the docks after they had finished rounding up a gang of young hooligans making trouble for some of the local fishermen. Malcolm had learned that his horse, the red chestnut gelding he refused to name, despite his team's suggestions, was very good at shunting people aside and running down anyone who tried to flee. On the docks they had helped moved wine barrels for the better part of two breaks, and tired, Malcolm had insisted that his unit go for lunch before returning later to continue their watch.
A young man in his early teens, just a boy really, had approached Malcolm while he had been sat near the edge of the dock on a grassy bank, enjoying a light meal, and had decided to question the knight about his blade, comparing it to the much shorter sword he had been gifted by his father, strapped proudly to his hip. "Will you show me how to block an attack?" He asked, and Malcolm, who found it difficult to refuse the lad, got to his feet and drew his long sword.
"On guard!" He grinned at the boy and watched as the child drew his short sword.
Benjamin laughed from where he had been seated next to Malcolm and heckled. "Get him, kid! Go for the ankles!"
Malcolm smirked and avoided a couple of swings by blocking with his shield, which the young teen seemed to enjoy beating at with his blade, before he stepped back and readied his own attack. "Left foot back," Malcolm coached. "You must always be ready to move." He swung slowly then and the boy edged backwards before stepping forward to stab at him again, a move easily deflected by the captain.
"You're moving in a circle," the teen observed. "Why do you attack from the side."
"Most good fighters do," Malcolm divulged. "It's more difficult to defend against a side on attack."
The boy smiled, thankful for the advice. "I'll remember!"
"Malcolm," Benjamin drew his attention momentarily, pointing down to the docks where he could see Elyna talking to Kathryn.
A sharp, stinging sensation in the man's right thigh pulled him back to look at the boy, who stood with hands closed over his open mouth. "I'm sorry!" He looked as guilty as he sounded.
Malcolm glanced down at his trousers and the cut in them about two inches wide, blood already seeping from the wound he had sustained. "It's all right, just a scratch!" Malcolm passed his shield back to Benjamin and sheathed his sword. "Run along now, you don't want to miss your boat."

His mother who had been watching from the docks pinched her boy's ear and dragged him off, scolding him for bothering the Knights. Benjamin chuckled, seemingly amused by the thought of his comrade being bested by a child. Malcolm shoved him playfully and excused himself before heading down to the dock to interrupt Kathryn, sending her off to check for a name at the booking office he had made up so that he could take Elyna aside, already smiling about being able to see her off.
"You're early," he grinned. "I don't think you boat arrives for another half a break." He looked down at the hooded hawk then and dread to ask, a dark brow raised in amusement.

The sound of waves crashing on the shore filled her ears and she offered a wan smile to the Captain as he drew her to one side, “You’re bleeding,” she retorted to his comment about her being early. But then, so was she. Elyna looked around and set the Hawk down on a fencepost, looping around the ties of his jesses. She really needed to tend to that wing soon, before it could set wrong.

As soon as Elyna had seen Katheryn, she’d known she was doomed. Sure enough Malcolm had come out of nowhere, crossing the distance with impossibly long strides and found a way to dismiss his Knight. There was a small, distant part of her that was screaming that she should just run away from everything. Take up Malcolms’ mad offer from the night before and flee this life to carve a new one. But she couldn’t leave her family like that. The Skyrider knew that her Mother loved her, and wanted the best for her. It just happened to be different to what she wanted for herself. The weight of despair threatened to bury her; and it would be tempting to give in and just let the world pile more and more rocks on her body, so she would never have to surface.

Elyna had never imagined their time together would be so curtailed. She had imagined at least an arc to love him, and dreamt that somehow in the future, they would a way and enough strength to be together. She wasn’t blind or stupid and the young noble hadn’t expected to ever marry Malcolm, even if he would have wanted her as a wife she couldn’t picture herself turning into Vanessa, living on as he remained ageless. She could never have shared him like that, but maybe she could have left her family behind with a bit more time? It was a bitter taste that lined her tongue.

They couldn’t afford to think like that. There was no way to stop the marriage her parents had arranged for her, and Malcolm was also a married man. No matter that he claimed not to have shared his bed with Vanessa in so long. They wouldn’t have been the first to transgress marriage vows either, but that didn’t make it right. Her mind spun between desperate hope and simple despair.

The same part of her mind that was screaming, had been clinging to the faint hope that if she didn’t tell him, then it wouldn’t be real. If she’d not seen Malcolm at the docks, she could have left and returned and… She opened her mouth to speak but found no air in her lungs. She gulped and looked down, “they were going to kill this little guy, because they broke his wing,” she offered a brief explanation, “I couldn’t let them do that…”

She forced herself to look up, and only managed it for a split second before her gaze dropped back to his boots. She wished for anything to happen, real lightning to strike, or a wave to rise up and wash them all away. Anything to stop her having to say the next words. The immortals didn't provide.

“5th of Sa’un,” the Skyrider forced herself to look up again, though it was painful and she thought her heart was going to break her ribs it beat so hard in her chest, “you wanted your invitation to the wedding…so the 5th Trial of Sa’un, I’m sure it’ll be in the city somewhere…bring the whole crew,” barbed words again, but she couldn’t help the sting that laced them. The Skyrider couldn’t hold in all of her pain. It twisted within, threatening to explode and spill out. So she gripped it tight and wrapped her arms around her chest as though she could hold it all in.

Malcolm couldn't quite describe the feeling that welled within, an inner tide swelling up to fill his chest, much akin to pride and yet... there was something more to it. It was impossible to deny how happy the woman made him and the smile on his face now only seemed to cement the fact that he was developing some very strong feelings for the young Skyrider. It was difficult not to steal her away behind the booking office and kiss her out of sight or take Elyna into his arms in front of everyone standing near the docks, instead he was forced to swallow the sea of emotion crashing and turning within him and be ever mindful of his position, of the position he would put her in if she were to get a bad name for herself. Really the two of them had carried on for far too long, falling into a romance that never should have started in the first place. Was it too late to stop, to turn back? He hoped so...

"Final call for those heading to Endor," a man called from the docks and Malcolm turned to look at him before his attention was swiftly won again by Elyna with talk of the hawk she had picked up.
"You will need to set the wing soon," Malcolm offered, he knew very little about caring for birds. "A straight, thin stick and some bandaging, you might even have to cut away a few of his feathers and hope they grow back, in order to make him comfortable."

What came next struck the man like a hand to the face. Malcolm stood staring at the woman, not sure if he should laugh or take her seriously, though the look on her face forced him to indulge the latter. How long had she known? He wondered, this seemed a lot like a confession after all. Malcolm recoiled, a snake faced with a stronger opponent, one intent on inflicting pain it seemed. He felt himself take a few steps back from the woman, making himself appeared shorter as he left her on the high ground and retreated like a wounded dog towards the docks. The Mortalborn turned, combed his fingers through his long, black hair and with the action, brushed off the initial bout of pain and frustration that had hit him, leaving him to think a little more clearly.
"I don't know what you want me to say that I haven't already told you," he admitted as he looked back to face her once more.

He hadn't been able to convince her that a life with him was the better option. What had he hoped for, what would be really have given up to see fantasy become reality? It wasn't easy being a dreamer, and like a drunk forced to face the cold, sobering light of a future without the bottle, Malcolm tried to imagine not holding Elyna in his arms again, or tasting her kiss on his lips, lending an ear to her voice, like a song for the senses.
"We had fun," he looked down as his shoulders were lifted in a disheartening shrug. "No one got hurt, perhaps this is for the best," he couldn't look her in the eye as he said all of this, for he didn't believe the words, not for a second.

Malcolm reacted as if she’d hit him. Struck by the same blow of reality, that had fallen on her, and his precious gift of truth. It was dagger, he was right. Without thinking she followed his steps until he turned away. Too late she realised that her hand was outstretched towards him, as though touching him could stop all the trials form turning and keep them both safe, locked away from the rest of the world. Elyna dropped her arm back to her side and took a step back, mindful of the busy dock and the crew that never seemed far enough away.

What had he told her? That he wanted her to give up her rooms in the barracks? She was packed and ready to move upon her return. Where to, she hadn’t known but she’d been willing to trust her future to his hands. What else had he told her? She knew who he was, son of Vri. An immortal man gifted with abilities beyond her grasp. He had sworn he’d never lie to her and that some things were worth dying for…

She had shared more kisses than words with him. What more did he want? He didn’t know what else to say? Elyna clenched her fists tight at her sides and refused to reply. She had a thousand answers. Tell me that you love me. Tell me that we will leave and live our lives together. Tell me that this isn’t the end? Her heart was silences though and her mouth remained closed in pained, stubborn resolve.

We had fun. Whatever it had been, it was dead and relegated to the past now. It had been fun. Slapped by his words she felt her cheeks burning with shame and anger. She had been a distractions to a man with an ailing wife. He hadn’t shared Vanessa’s bed in over a decade, but who was to say that she simply wasn’t the last in a string of infidelity? She had been new, beyond his command, convenient. Elyna shut out all the tenderness of her memories and his heartfelt offer of a home and future together. If the Skyrider didn’t hang onto something, she was going to break so she clung to her anger.

The noble woman straightened and lifted her chin, eyes turned dark with all the copper flecks fled. Gulls wheeled overhead and the Hawk stirred on his makeshift perch.

“I suppose you’re right,” the words sunk like lead to the bottom of the ocean, “n-no hurt to be had between us,” she gulped down the sudden lump in her throat. Battling with the heat behind her own eyes she withdrew with quick steps to where she’d tethered her new pet. Her fingers fumbled on the leather tries, she tried to untangle the knot, but it wasn’t easy.

Elyna glanced back at Malcolm and tried not to go motionless at the sight of him once more. He had made himself clear. He would give her up to the future and marriage to some Nobleman. There was no reason to fight against her family, she would simply have to accept the path she was given. She sank her teeth into her bottom lip and was sobered by the taint of her own blood. She licked the wound, “so we’re done here?”

No more dreaming. So much for happiness and love.

It was difficult to walk away when he knew with every step the distance put between them would only see him long for her all the more and the memory, the hope, and his wishes for them both. He looked back, not wanting to forget too quickly the way the sunlight hit her hair, turning stray strands red and gold, or her dark eyes, swirling with anger now; Elyna was ruled by her emotions and unashamed to wear them for all the world to see. If only he could close the gap, kiss Elyna and remind her that she cared for him, maybe even loved him. Did he love her? Did it matter anymore?
Malcolm waved as if to push his troubles away, dismissing the discussion, the idea of breaking up with someone he always knew had been out of his reach, and promised to another, whoever that other might be. Their relationship was nothing but a ticking time-bomb and the clock had finally run out.
As he walked up the path to join Benjamin, Malcolm locked anything he dared to think or feel up in the little black box at the back of his mind and tossed away the key. He knew one thing for certain, he would never share so much of himself with anyone, no matter his desires; no one else would ever know what he was and after he returned from Krom, he would be able to pack up and go, just as he should have the moment Vanessa had walked out on him.
"What was that about?" Benjamin asked.
"She doesn't want to work with the crew anymore," Malcolm replied. "I think she's going home to Burhan?"
"Trouble in paradise?" The man teased.
"Paradise is a lie," Malcolm murmured. "Whatever we might have had, we don't anymore."
Benjamin closed his hand over the captain's shoulder. "Come on, Cap, let's go arrest some ne'er-do-wells."

OH MY GOD WHY. You two managed to make this a rollercoaster of emotions in six posts. Six. I’m dying. Malcolm is on such a high of love and adoration, and then Elyna just slaps him with news of her engagement. I’ll have you know that you are cruel, cruel writers. Great writers, but cruel. (Incidentally, you’ve both received a point in Torture for putting each other through mental agony and really hitting where it hurts.)

Elyna, wonderful inner dialogue, as always! Also, this line? “Ps. Please don’t bring that red dress, it makes you look ill.” Pffft, mothers. Giving us complexes until the end of their days, amirite.

This was a lovely short thread. Looking forward to the next one!

Mal, excellent portrayal of Malcolm's love and pain. Also, the Etiquette is for not ravishing Elyna on the Docks. Way to hold yourself back, stud. ;)
