Forging the Beginning

Moulded to his will the iron beneath his hammer cried a resounding clang with every swift stroke of his fists bashing and beating onto the iron, until it finally gave way to his relentless assault. Molten fire burned earth into iron that funnelled into the crevice of a large lump of rock to then be shaped into a tool of war.

The beginning of a new generation, Vakhanor used his previous master’s work worn tools to start his own path to becoming an artisan of his trade. Driven by the goal of survival, Vakhanor was adamant to make at least two swords and few horseshoes before stopping for the evening. Smithing was a slow process that required a lot of care and attention, in order to make up for the fact that he was newer to the trade he had to be even more careful as well as balance his time with raising a child with nobody to help him.

Focus had stolen Vakhanor from the world and with every ear shattering sound of clashing metal, the gears continued to circle in his mind as he paid close attention the intricacies of his work, trying not to burn himself as much possible. Inspired by the man who came before him Vakhanor took the time to make his own mould of sword by slowly chipping at thick stone until he had came up with a shape he liked. Unfortunately untrained in the ways of working with stone, the result was poor and he had to use Oberyk's old one until he could find a mason willing to carve into the stone. He'd had a little bit of luck at least and despite not being the most complex of designs in Idalos, there was a simple elegance in Vakhanor’s work that made the blades both efficient and attractive to the eye. During the time he would wait for one blade to cool inside of the older mould, he would often use the rest of the time to decorate one of the already finished blades by etching small swirls and patterns on either side of the blade.

Sweat dripped from his brow and every moment turned into a century as he remembered the face of a little girl holding her father’s hand, a soldier fighting in the war that was stupid enough to put his life on the line and risk the welfare of his family. There was honour in fighting, but there was also pain. Anger fuelled his conquest when the memory shifted to the crying eyes of Bjorn’s friend hung over a corpse, wishing that her father was alive. This what he worked for, to give the men fighting a god damned chance to win the wars they fought and to keep the protected from both themselves and the enemy swords they wished to fell.

Shaped to his desire Vakhanor lifted the sword to check its balance, when it was not quite done he returned to the metal back into the pit from hence it came for a few short bits until it was hot enough to shape again. Half a break of unyielding strength and determination went by until the process was finally complete and he could lay down the freshly forged weapon to cool.

“Alright there Bjorn?” he asked, shifting his attention down toward his little brother who had found some daisies and was weaving them into little flower crowns “What ya got there?”

“My teacher said if you tie a thousand daisies together you will get good luck!” the kid exclaimed excitedly, with the same focus that Vakhanor held when doing his work.

“I know how boring this is for you kiddo, we’ll get some honey on the way back okay?” Vakhanor said, watching the intense frown on the child’s face light up with excitement. Due to being poor the smith could do little in the way of buying Bjorn treats and instead did what he could by giving the boy apple and honey.

A moment of brief understanding passed across the child’s face as its eyes dropped down to the second sword he had just finished “Are you done yet?” the kid asked hopefully.

“A little while yet. We’ll go before the sun falls,” Vakhanor replied with the hint of a smile, proud of how well Bjorn was behaving.

Forging the Beginning

Using the corner of his anvil, Vakhanor drew out the metal and pounded down upon the hot steel from all sides. Paying close attention he returned to his focused state so he could keep control of the heat along the metal until it bent into the shape of a horseshoe. Unperfected in a technique that even some of the best smiths had trouble doing if they were distracted, Vakhanor had to heat the metal twice for each shoe before being able to shape it properly so he could then move on to upset it

The means to a deserving end he strived to achieve brilliance as his rough laboured hands clenched against metal clamps that clung to the product of his diligence. Each clash was a cry to melt his strength dry and test his endurance, centred across his anvil he gave himself room to breathe. Challenged to a task a little harder to do than the previous, continually followed by the next; Vakhanor’s task was intensified by of the sheer heat of the tools beneath his fingertips that in his early days of smithing was the bringer of long painful nights and bandages.

Quick to discover working without someone else in the shop was a tough job, every few bits Vakh would have to bellow air into the forge which only made everything so much more difficult. The key to his work was to get it hot and hit it hard and in order to keep this up he had to keep feeding it.

“S’cuse me sir!” the muffled yell of a small voice of a woman called from the market. Unable to hear her over the sound of rushing air, it took Bjorn yelling at him to draw his attention.

Dropping the below he turned to see Bjorn talking to a customer that was waiting for him “Cheers B,” he said with a large smile and shifted his attention to the woman. She was short with simple clothes, long braided long hair with beaded brown eyes and freckles. Although a little chubby in her constitution, she gave off an innocent demeanour and he figured probably wasn’t here to appreciate his soot covered, sweaty mug.

“What can I do for you?” he asked, wiping his hands on a clean rag.

“I don’t mean t’ bother ya, d’ya think ya could make somethin’ for me? I was clumsy and ruined the shelves my pa made but we don’t have any nails, could you make some for me?” she pleaded, handing out a small satchel of gold “I’ve got coin and if that’s not enough I make pretty good bread.”

Snorting a laugh, the smile on Vakhanor’s face widened “I’m sure the gold will be enough,” he said, taking the back to the count the coins “Let’s see. For this amount of gold I can make you either twenty large or fifty smaller ones.”
“Larger ones if you could sir,” she requested politely.

“The names Vakhanor, pleasure to meet you. That sounds easy enough, I’ll get them done by the end of the evening for ya. How does that sound?”

“Leiyna,” the blonde replied with a shy smile and nodded “That’s quick! Thank you so very much!”

Forging the Beginning

Started on yet another one of the more mundane tasks that he could do, Vakhanor began to create the nails for the young lady who had just previously stopped by his shop. Nails had always been a pain in the arse to make and despite the ease in which repetition of the act provoked quality; if not careful an individual could easily burn themselves making them. Much to his relief Leiyna had requested large nails instead of small ones.

Once again Vakh utilised the corner of his anvil to thin out the pieces of iron and used the flat of his the hammer to create the pointed tip of his nails and gradually increased the power behind each blow.

One after the other Vakh pressed onward trying not to veer if into a trance, if there was one thing that smithing was a good teacher for it was how to be patient. Due to the nature and care of the work, a smith with a hot temper might as well just go for a walk and lay rest to his anvil, a temper could blind a man and more often than not get him hurt. Short staffed and on his own in his endeavour with nothing but a six year old little boy to call out the arrival of customers, Vakhanor was up to his ears the what endurance he had left began to wane.

Two breaks passed until he was finally done with all the nails he had promised Leiyna and was finally able to rest.

“You done?!” Bjorn cheered. Even though the kid had been calm the whole day it was easy to see he was getting restless, he’d spent the last break running about and pretending to be a knight. The boy had originally tried to use one of Vakh’s tools, only to be quickly shot down when Vakh snatched it away from him and eventually settled with a piece of wood.

“Yeah I’m done, just gotta wait for the last one to cool and put them into a sack. Be a good boy and get one of the little ones for me,” he told Bjorn.

“Will you read me a story at bed time if I do?” the child asked in return, working his mercenary whiles to trade for favours.

“Yeah alright,” Vakhanor agreed, he wasn’t fond of reading but he knew that Bjorn liked the time with him.

Satisfied with the trade Bjorn did as he was told and handed Vakh a small satchel made of linen. Carefully placing the nails inside, Vakh then remembered the promise he’d given to Bjorn “I said I would buy you some honey didn’t I?”

“Yup!” Bjorn exclaimed, even more excited now.

“I need to wait for the lady to come back,” he said taking eight silver nel from his pocket “go and get some then come straight back here okay?”

“Okay!” the boy said as he took the money with an excitement smile and ran off to buy honey from the nice old lady down the road.

Then he waited.
