Lei'lira glanced at the bed where Eri was sleeping as peacefully as she could under the circumstances. The poor girl was plagued by terrible nightmares about being branded, and what that cruel act meant for her. Ever since it had happened, Eri had woken screaming in terror, and pain several times a night, often when a shift in position put pressure on the new brands. Even now, she murmured softly in her uneasy sleep.

Lei'lira wanted to help the girl she thought of more as her sister or her ward than her slave, but she didn't know how. That, the need to buy some things for Teirue, and Eri, and the desire to keep the room as quiet as possible so Eri could get some much needed rest was what prompted Lei'lira to venture into the city.

Her first stop was the herbal shop she had found the day Eri had been branded and registered as a slave. Unfortunately, the owner of the shop still hadn't managed to get any willow bark in. But she did say that she had found someone who might have some available, and if so, she would have it within the next trial or two. Lei'lira thanked the woman, and left.

Teirue sang softly as she walked, hand firmly clasped in Lei'lira's. Snow seemed to float in the dim twilight sky as a light flurry drifted through the air. It seemed to amuse the young girl, and for that, Lei'lira was glad. A lot of terrible things had happened to Teirue in her short life. And she had seen a lot of terrifying things. But right now...in this moment, Teirue was happy. She was looking around, enjoying the sights, and just...living life to the fullest. Living in the moment, not dwelling on past fears; it was a skill Lei'lira wished that she could develop.

Should I take Teirue to the market now? She could use some new clothes, and maybe a few treats, too. Eri will also need some things, and for that matter, so do I. The one good thing about Andaris is the variety. I'll be able to find things in the market here that the one in Warrick would never have. I'll have to be careful not to buy more that we can bring back with us. Although...it will be Ashan soon. I think I'll see what the chances of my joining a caravan headed out to Warrick is when Eri is fit for travel. We'll be able to carry more back home that way. And riding in a wagon might be easier for Eri than riding a horse would.

Lei'lira glanced at Teirue.

But that doesn't really answer the question, does it? Perhaps it would be better to wait to go to the marketplace until I've gone to the library and researched what I need to learn. I can use the promise of a treat as a bribe if Teirue is good.

My vote is for the second plan. The last thing we need is a little kid running around causing chaos in the library while you're trying to study. It's boring watching you read. And it will take even longer if you have an excited kid distracting you.

Lei'lira bit back the sudden urge to stick her tongue out at Lei'luna. But she did have a good point. So she knelt down, and got Teirue's attention.

"Teirue, can you be a good girl for me?" she asked hopefully.

Teirue nodded enthusiastically.

"Good. I need to go to the library and read a bunch of boring, grownup books so I can learn how to help Eri. While I do that, I'm going to need you to sit still, and be very, very quiet. But I'll try to find some pretty picture books for you to look at while I'm reading, so it won't be too boring for you. And if you're really, really good, I'll take you to the market, and we can get a treat later, okay?"

"You're gonna help Eri?" Teirue asked with wide, solemn eyes.

Lei'lira nodded.

"I want to learn how to help her, yes."

"I'll be good. I promise." the little girl vowed.

"I want to help Eri, too."

"I know you do, Teirue. And you can do that best by being really quiet while we're in the library, okay?"

Teirue nodded.

"When we go to the market, we can pick out a treat for Eri, too, okay? Will you help me pick out a treat for her?"

Teirue grinned, as she nodded eagerly. Lei'lira smiled back, then she looked around to get her bearings. The owner of the herbal shop had given her directions to the library, but it was very easy for Lei'lira to lose track of where she was with the crowds of people everywhere. Once she knew roughly where she was, it was time to get going.

The library was nothing like what Lei'lira had been expecting. It was...huge. Her grandmother's estate was probably bigger, but this place looked bigger with its rooms that were so large that her voice echoed eerily when she spoke. There were endless cases filled with books; far more than Lei'lira had ever seen in her entire life. She looked around in bewilderment, wondering how she was ever going to find what she needed.

"Lei'lira...what's that?" Teirue whispered as she tugged on Lei'lira's sleeve, and pointed towards the ceiling.

Lei'lira looked up...and up...and up. It was almost like standing outside, and looking up at the sky. Up near the ceiling, a giant...thing was suspended in mid air. It looked like a skeleton...but if it was, Lei'lira couldn't even begin to guess what kind of animal it was supposed to be.

"I don't know, Teirue. I think it's supposed to be the bones of some kind of animal, but I've never seen any animal that big before." Lei'lira whispered back.

"It's a whale."

Lei'lira started as she turned to see who had spoken. It was a woman with pretty auburn hair who looked to be several arcs older than she was.

"Whales are a kind of animal that live deep in the ocean. Not many people ever get the chance to see them unless they spend most of their time out at sea like the Biqaj traders do. My name is Alana Aberdeen, and I'm the librarian here. What can I do for you?"

"I'm...well, I'm looking for some books." Lei'lira began nervously.

The librarian raised an eyebrow.

"You'll find plenty of those here. Are there any books you are looking for in particular,...?"

"Lei'lira. My name is Lei'lira. And I'm looking for medical books. Um...ones about how to treat burns."

Lei'lira hoped that that would be specific enough to point her in the right direction without making the librarian suspicious.

"I also need to find books about buildings. Materials that go into adding onto an existing home, the costs of those materials, the advantage of using one over the other...things like that. I'm hoping to add a few rooms onto my house."

Lei'lira glanced down at Teirue.

"And maybe you could help me find something to keep Teirue here busy while I'm reading?" she asked hopefully.

"I think we can work with that. Follow me, please."

The librarian seemed to know exactly where she was going as she led Lei'lira, and Teirue through the stacks of books. Lei'lira couldn't help but wonder how long it had taken the older woman to learn her way around the library. She wasn't sure she would ever be able to manage it herself.

"This is where we keep the medical books. The ones about burns can be found on the third shelf of the second book case. Do you know the titles or authors you are looking for?"

Lei'lira shook her head as she moved over to where the librarian had indicated. There was an overwhelming amount of books to choose from, but after several bits, and a lot of guidance from the librarian, she had selected a few general books, and one that was specifically about brands. The next stop was at the section where books about carpentry were housed. The librarian wasted no time in pulling one book off of the shelf, and offering it to Lei'lira.

"From what you told me, this book should have the information you need. I assume that you aren't planning to build the new rooms yourself?"

Lei'lira shook her head.

"I wouldn't even know where to start. No. What I'm hoping to do is to have a good idea of what I want, and how much it will cost me when I go to hire someone who knows what they're doing to do the work." she said softly.

The librarian chuckled.

"At least you know your limitations. There are surprisingly few people who do. That book will tell you what you need to know. Now, I believe you also wanted something to keep your daughter occupied while you read?"

Lei'lira nodded, not bothering to correct the older woman. She did hope to be able to adopt Teirue officially, after all.

"Let me show you to the children's section, then."

Lei'lira thanked the librarian as she followed her through the stacks once more. The children's section had a room all its own, and contained more books in that one section alone than the entire Warrick library could boast of. Once there, Alana directed her attention solely to Teirue, asking her what kinds of things she liked. Before long, the woman was holding a good sized stack of books meant for Teirue. Finally, she led Lei'lira and Teirue over to a table where they could read what they had gathered.

"When you're done with these books, just set them on that table over there." the librarian said, pointing to a table piled high with books.

"If you need to, you can check out two books a week if you live here in Andaris?"

Lei'lira shook her head.

"We live in Warrick. I'm not sure exactly how long we'll be staying, but we'll be going home in early Ashan."

"Then I'm afraid you won't be able to check any books out. But if you need more than a trial to study what you hope to learn, you can set aside the books you need, and give them to me when you leave. I'll keep them available for you until you're done with them."

Lei'lira thanked the older woman, and she left.

I'm glad she was willing to help you find the books you needed. If it were left up to you, you'd never find them in all this.

Lei'luna was right, of course. But that didn't stop her from sticking her tongue out at her when no one was looking.

Neither would you. Now let me work. The sooner I find the information I need, the sooner you can stop being bored waiting for me to finish.

Once Lei'lira got Teirue happily settled, it was time to get to work. Her most pressing need was to learn about how to properly care for Eri's burns, so that was where Lei'lira started. She wasn't sure how much time she had before Teirue got restless, so she began by skimming the books that had general info about burns. A few things stuck out as being particularly important, so she went back and reread those sections, taking careful notes as she did so.

There are four different kinds of burns; first degree, second degree, third degree, and finally, fourth degree burns. In order of severity, first degrees are the mildest while fourth degree burns are the worst. First degree, or superficial burns are identified by pain, redness, minor swelling, and an absence of blistering. Second degree burns produce a slight thickness of the skin, and may include blistering. This indicates that damage has been done to the underlying layers of skin. Third degree burns feature leathery, waxen skin. They are commonly accompanied by numbness that is caused by damage to the dermis, and surrounding nerves. The worst type of burns are fourth degree burns. They have extended past the skin layers, and into the flesh, causing charring and irreparable damage.

Lei'lira was certain that Eri's brands were worse than first degree burns, but she didn't know how severe they truly were.

Burns can be caused by a number of different things. The first step in treating any burn is to stop the burning in order to prevent a more serious burn. But there are different ways of doing that depending on what caused the burn to begin with. Thermal burns, or heat burns are caused by heat. If someone is on fire, cover them with a blanket, or use water to smother the flames.

Lei'lira stared at the book wide eyed. It seemed obvious to her that a brand was a heat burn, seeing that it was caused by pressing hot metal against the skin. But that, and actually being on fire were two very separate things.

Cold temperature burns are caused by prolonged exposure to intense cold. Victims of this type of burn should be warmed up carefully, using methods such as a heated blanket, or activity that will get the blood circulating without causing them to sweat. Small areas, such as the ears, face, fingers, toes, and nose can be warmed by blowing warm air on them, tucking them in warm clothing, or putting them in warm water.

As Lei'lira read, she wondered if frostbite was considered to be a cold temperature burn. But she didn't have enough time to research extra things, so she went back to what she was reading.

Liquid scald burns are also considered to be thermal burns because they are caused by exposure to heat. But rather than fire, they are caused by hot liquid such as boiling water, or cooking oil. These burns can be soothed by running cool water over them for ten or twenty bits. Chemical burns are caused by exposure to substances that irritate the skin, causing a burning sensation. Some foods, such as chili peppers can cause chemical burns. This kind of burn should only be treated by a skilled doctor.

The next book she skimmed through mentioned how to treat burns of varying severity.

It is important for one's hands to be clean when treating any type of burn. A first degree can be treated by running cool water over the burn to reduce pain and swelling. It should then be cleaned using a mild soap, and water. If the skin has not been broken, a poultice made from an herb that will help to prevent infection should be applied. Finally, the burn should be wrapped loosely to prevent agitation. If the burn is larger than three inches in diameter, you should seek the aid of a doctor rather than trying to treat it yourself. The treatment for a second degree burn is similar to that of a first degree burn. The burn should be rinsed with cool water until the pain stops; this will usually take fifteen to thirty bits. It should then be washed with clean water, and patted dry with a clean cloth. Some of the skin might come off during this process. It is important that you are careful not to break the blisters. If the burned skin, and blisters have not broken open, a bandage might not be necessary unless they are likely to get dirty, or be irritated by clothing. Anything worse than a second degree burn can only be treated by a doctor who has been trained to treat them. Such treatment will usually include extensive debriding, which is the removal of dead tissue.

Lei'lira shuddered at that. She really didn't want to think about how painful debriding must be for those who had to have it done. Once she felt as though she had a basic understanding of burns in general, Lei'lira switched to the books she'd found that specifically dealt with brands.

Branding is a form of scarification through the application of heated metal to the skin. This causes a serious burn that will eventually become a scar. Ideally, a healed brand looks like a pattern of thick raised lines that is slightly lighter than a person's skin when fully healed. But the actual amount of raising varies greatly, dependent of many different factors. Sometimes the lines will even inset rather than raise. Brands are used to mark a slave. For this reason, they are usually places in areas that are either easily visible, or easy to check, such as a person's arm, or side.

Lei'lira took note of the actual definition briefly, before reading further.

A brand is a burn; it is usually a second degree burn, but it can sometimes be a third degree burn. Since the nerve endings are destroyed, being branded is less painful than one might think. Once the nerve endings are destroyed in the first few trills of contact with the heated metal, the pain that is felt is mostly psychological. But the area that has been branded will be incredibly sore as it heals, especially if it is located on a part of the body that flexes often, such as an arm, or shoulder. It actually hurts more after the fact than during the initial branding process. Brands take a long time to heal. They go through a few phases of healing, which differ in length from brand to brand a great deal. The first stage is a scabby phase where they look like a horrible wound; as the scab heals, it can itch horribly. Then they heal as a bright red scar which will slowly become pinker over time. Eventually it will become slightly lighter than normal skin color. The scabby phase usually lasts for thirty to sixty trials, but full healing can take anywhere from half an arc to a full arc.

A lot of the information specifically about brands was the same as the treatment for other second of third degree burns. Keep it clean, watch out for signs of infection; things that seemed to be common sense as much as anything else. She also learned that were two schools of thought on how a brand should be allowed to heal. By simply leaving it alone, the body would heal, leaving a fairly consistent wound. But different people scar differently, and the resulting brand scar might end up looking very faint, with little raised scar tissue. For that reason, some slave owners allowed, or even encouraged their slaves to pick at the scabs as they healed. Doing so would irritate the wound, causing worse scarring in the process, but the resulting scar would not be uniform, and might be difficult to tell what the image was.

For her own part, Lei'lira didn't care what the brand looked like as long as it healed well, and wasn't so hard to see that someone was likely to force her to have Eri branded again. So she liked the "leave it alone" school of thought. Reading a bit further told her that patting or slapping the brand gently would help to dissipate the itch of the healing brand. She made special note of this as she took notes, before moving on.

The other thing that stood out was that the owner of the herbal shop had been right about aloe being good for a burn. It wasn't that Lei'lira had doubted her, but the book she was reading explained why aloe would help. As she read, she learned that being branded would increase blood flow to the area of the body that was branded. This increased blood flow would cause the area to redden, and swell. An aloe poultice applied to the new brand would soothe the area, and reduce the swelling.

Another chapter in the book discussed aloe in more detail, and since Teirue was happily occupied with her picture books, Lei'lira indulged her curiosity.

Aloe is good for soothing burns, frostbite, cold sores, and healing small wounds. It can be used to moisturize dry skin as well as reduce swelling. Aloe can also be used to soothe rashes, and skin irritations. When taken internally, it can treat constipation, aid in digestion, and strengthen the body, allowing it to fight off illness more easily. It can also be used as a mouthwash to help keep one's teeth and gums healthy.

Lei'lira was tempted to go look for books that were specifically about aloe because it sounded like a very useful plant. But Lei'luna was already starting to look bored. And although Teirue was being good so far, Lei'lira didn't want to push her luck too much. So since she had one other thing she wanted to look up while she was at the library, she decided that it was time to move on.

The book Lei'lira had found about building materials wasn't as helpful as she'd hoped it would be. It listed the different types of materials available, but said nothing about the costs of the various materials. Still, it at least gave her a direction to go in when she asked someone about adding some rooms onto her house.

Some of the building materials that were described were dismissed completely from consideration. Wattle and daub, for example. It was described as being a composite building material in which vertical wooden stakes, or wattles, were woven together with horizontal twigs and branches, which were held together, or daubed with a sticky material that was made out of some combination of wet soil, clay, sand, mud, animal dung, hay, and straw. Lei'lira really didn't like the idea of having additional rooms made out of that. Straw wasn't even remotely considered as a building material, either. According to the book she was taking notes from, it was used in some areas to build huts. But...she had horses. If hungry enough, they would eat straw. The last thing she needed was her horses escaping somehow, and eating her house.

Cob was more promising. It was described as being made out of earth mixed with sand and straw. The mixture would then be sculpted much like clay would. Because of this, the material worked well if you wanted curved walls, arches, and niches. In addition to that, earth homes would be cool in the hot seasons, and warm in Zi'da, and Cylus. Lei'lira really liked the idea of using cob for the additional rooms she needed, but she was uncertain how the overall look would turn out since her cottage was made out of stone. At the very least, it was something to think about.

Wood, in the form of logs, or planks, clay, and bricks were listed as potential building materials as well. Stone was more complicated. There was three different kinds of building stone; igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic. Igneous stone, such as granite, was hard, and non porous. It was created by the cooling of lava. Sedimentary stone, such as sandstone, and limestone was soft, fairly porous rock. It was formed from deposits of preexisting rock that settled in layers on sea beds. Finally, metamorphic stone, such as marble and slate was hard, and non porous. It was formed from deposits of preexisting rock that had been altered by intense heat or pressure. Even as Lei'lira read the book, she had no idea what any of what she was reading actually meant. Was one type of rock better to use than another? And if so...why? Granite, marble, and slate were all listed as potential building materials. They were also all hard, non porous types of rock. The Warrick estate in Fort Warrick had marble floors, and she had once overheard one of the servants calling marble "fancy." Did that mean that hard, non porous rock was somehow better than soft, porous rock was? And again...if it was, why was it better?

Then there was the difference between cut stone, and raw stone. Cut stone was stone that had been hewn, or chiseled to shape after it had been split from the quarry it came from. Raw stone was...what, exactly? Stone that had not been cut, and shaped? Random rocks that people found laying around? Perhaps the larger rocks found while a farmer prepared their fields for planting were used to build things? There were even different kinds of building methods when it came to stone. Dry stacking involved irregularly shaped stones that were carefully selected, and placed so that they fit closely together without slipping. Structures made using this method were usually wider at the base and they would taper in as the height increased. The weight of the stone would pushed inwards to support the structure, and any settling or disturbance would make the structure lock together, and become even stronger. Dry stone structures were highly durable, and easily repaired. They allowed water to drain through them without causing damage to the stones. Field walls, bridges were the most common structures built using this method, but houses could apparently be built that way as well. No tools were needed to build using this method; only the skill of choosing and placing the stones.

Stone masonry, on the other hand, was stone blocks that were laid in rows, and fixed in place with mortar, which was a cement or lime mixture that was pasted between the stones. The rows of stone blocks could be either even, or uneven in height. Cut stone was used to build the required structure when using this method of building. The stones would either be shaped into a block, which was a method known as ashlar masonry, or left rough, and cut irregularly, which was a method known as rubble masonry. The basic tools that were used to cut, and shape the stones in either method were chisels, a mallet, and a metal straight edge. Stone structures that were held together with mortar would be less durable than dry stone because water can get trapped between the stones and push them apart.

Lei'lira's head spun as she took notes on what she was reading. Her familiar sensed her mood, and woke from her nap.

What's wrong, Lei'lira? she asked with mild concern.

Lei'lira tried to explain what she had read, but after a few words, Lei'luna looked as lost as Lei'lira felt.

This cob stuff you mentioned...

What about it?

Use that. It sounds a lot simpler than all this other stuff. Lei'luna said finally.

The decision wasn't as simple as Lei'luna suggested, but Lei'lira found herself very tempted to take her familiar's advice. After a bit more reading, she learned that slate tiles were a good material for building a roof, and that with some materials, it was important to use wool insulation when building to add warmth to the room or house during the cold seasons. Materials such as cob, however, which were naturally warm in the cold seasons, and cool in the hot ones, sounded like they wouldn't need it. That was another point in the favor of using cob when she added onto the house, since wool insulation would likely be another added expense.

Teirue was starting to look bored, so Lei'lira gathered up her things, and placed the books she had borrowed on the shelf the librarian had shown her. Then it was time to do some shopping.

Lei'lira wasn't sure who was happier to leave the library; Lei'luna, who had quite literally been bored to sleep, or Teirue, who young as she was had difficulty staying quiet and still for breaks at a time as many children her age would. For herself, Lei'lira could have stayed there all trial, and been happy to lose herself among the shelves, reading anything that caught her eye. It was this part of the trip that she dreaded. Unless horses, or books were involved, she hated shopping with a passion. She wanted to get what she needed, and call it a trial as quickly as she could. Unfortunately, she had two girls in her care who needed...everything. It was going to be a long, exhausting trial for her, and if she was very lucky, Teirue would hold out throughout the trial.

She decided to get the clothes shopping out of the way, first. By doing that, she could hold the "fun" part of the trip, letting Teirue pick out a toy or two, as a bribe to keep the young child cooperative. If nothing else, watching Teirue's eyes light up with delight would be a well earned treat for her, as well as for the child. Lei'lira asked the librarian where the best place for buying clothes was, thinking the woman would direct her to the market. Instead, she told her about a clothing shop called Ericor's Elegance. And although she thought the shop sounded far too fancy for her tastes, she was assured that it was the best, so she decided to give it a chance.

Following the directions she'd been given, Lei'lira found Ericor's Elegance off the main road, located between a warehouse, and a jewelers shop. The two story shop didn't look like much on the outside, but that actually made Lei'lira feel more comfortable about going inside. Once inside, Teirue was instantly drawn to a display of brightly colored slippers.

"So soft..." she said in quiet awe.

The slippers did look very comfortable. And they'd be perfect come next Zi'da. Although she hadn't thought of slippers when she'd planned this trip out in her mind, Lei'lira decided to buy all three of them some nice, warm slippers.

"May I help you?"

Lei'lira jumped a little at the unexpected voice. The man she saw when she turned around looked like a noble. He was well dressed, and looked...regal somehow. The man wore the kind of fancy clothes that made Lei'lira feel deeply uncomfortable. They were decorative, not the kind of clothes that you could do an honest trial's work in. Clothes that screamed "look at me!" To Lei'lira, they felt false in some way; like they were meant to distract someone from an unpleasant truth by giving them a pretty facade to look at.

"I'm looking to buy some clothes." Lei'lira began uneasily.

The man chuckled lightly.

"Then you've come to the right place. Are you looking to buy something for yourself? A beautiful new gown, perhaps? Or are you looking for something for someone else?"

"A little of both. Tei'rue here has recently come into my care, and she needs...well...everything. I have an older child I am buying things for as well. And if I happen to see something I like for myself, well..."

"I'll have to see what I can find to tempt you with, then. What kinds of clothes are you looking for in particular? Dresses? Play clothes? Something else? And what kinds of material do you want them to be made out of?"

He must have seen the utterly lost look in Lei'lira's eyes because he chuckled again.

"Let me guess. You're the type who doesn't think much about clothing beyond making sure that it fits, and that it isn't stained?"

Lei'lira blushed as she nodded.

"Sorry." she muttered, feeling deeply self conscious.

"Don't worry about it. It gives us a place to start. I'm going to give you samples of the different types of material we have available, and you can decide what ones you like."

The man did just what he said, disappearing for a few bits only to return with a large number of material swatches. Each one was labeled with the name of the material, and a brief description. Several of the swatches were dismissed quickly. Silk, satin, and velvet were all beautiful materials that felt wonderful to the touch. But they were...too fancy. They were the stuff of nobility. A child couldn't play while wearing clothes made of such fancy things. Nor could she work in them; she'd be too afraid of ripping, or staining them. And they were horribly expensive. Lei'lira knew that she could afford them if she really wanted to...but what would she do with something made from one of those materials? What would Eri, or Teirue do with such a thing. If any of her neighbors were to see them wearing anything so fancy, they would be the laughing stocks of the neighboring farms for arcs to come. No. Lei'lira had no use for such things.

Ramie, chiffon, and organza were dismissed just as quickly. All three were very pretty, but chiffon looked too much like silk for Lei'lira's tastes; too fancy. Organza was a thin, sheer fabric that looked as though it would tear if you looked at it too harshly; far too fragile for what she wanted. The note on its card said that it was most often used for evening gowns...something that Lei'lira would never have any need for. Ramie was dismissed for a similar reason. Its note said it was often used in outer wear, but it would rip and stain easily. Any outfit she bought that was made of it would likely be ruined the first time it was worn. Leather was dismissed too, not because it wasn't durable enough, but because Lei'lira didn't need anything that would work well if made out of leather.

Finally, Lei'lira found two materials she liked; taffeta, and wool. Taffeta was a beautiful, soft fabric that had a slight sheen to it. And wool would be perfect for the colder seasons. Cotton would work well for the undergarments she need to buy for everyone. Lei'lira gave the material swatches back as she told the man who was helping her what her choices were.

"That's one decision down. Now...what, exactly, are you looking to buy?"

"Two nightgowns each for Teirue here, myself, and a thirteen arc old girl. One made out of taffeta, and one of wool for the cold seasons. A pair of gloves, and slippers for each of us, all made out of wool, as well as a coat and a cloak for all three of us to be made out of the same material. A blouse and skirt for me, and one for Eri, the girl who isn't here today. Those should all be made out of taffeta. Teirue here will need two dresses, one made from taffeta, and one from wool. And finally, five pairs of cotton undergarments each for all three of us." Lei'lira said, blushing as she spoke of undergarments in front of a man.

Play clothes for Teirue, and work clothes for herself, and Eri...normal clothes...could be bought at the market instead. And so could more swaddling clothes for the twins. But in some things, like getting luxurious nightgowns, it would be nice to treat themselves. The man's eye lit up in delight at the prospect of such a large sale. Lei'lira soon found her mind whirling as he asked her a rapid series of questions about colors, and trimmings, and estimated sizes. She was so occupied with trying to answer the man's questions that she didn't even have time to be nervous about getting her measurements taken, or assisting as Teirue's were taken. When asked about bringing Eri in to get her measurements taken, Lei'lira explained that Eri was injured, and that it would be very difficult to do so at this time. She then offered to get the girl's measurements herself and give them to the man if he would teach her how to do so. And in the mean time, he could start work on the clothes for Teirue, and herself.

That resulted in a quick lesson about how to take measurements. Lei'lira had had no idea just how much went into such a task. Apparently, a woman's waist, hip, and bust size were all taken into consideration as was the length of their arms and legs, and the size of their neck, hands, wrists, and feet. Of them all, Lei'lira had only known about the need to know the size of one's feet in order to buy shoes that fit properly. Prices were negotiated on, and agreed upon. Half of the money was to be owed immediately, while the rest would be paid on completion of the clothes, which were guaranteed to be ready before Lei'lira went home in Ashan.

When it was time to leave, Lei'lira thanked the man sincerely as she paid him. She was already exhausted by the ordeal of shopping, and she was tempted to leave the rest of it for another trial. But she had promised Teirue a treat if she was good, and the little girl had been amazingly patient through everything so far. Lei'lira couldn't bring herself to disappoint the child, so she would need to go to the market for that at the very least. And if they were already going to be there, she might as well get everything she needed in one trip to spare them from having to come back another trial.

The marketplace was a lot easier to find than Ericor's Elegance had been. Both were located in Midtown, but the clothing shop was off the main road, almost hidden on a side path. The marketplace, on the other hand, was in the heart of Midtown. All you really had to do to find it was follow the crowd since many of the people out and about were headed there.

Knowing how busy the marketplace was likely to be, and actually seeing it first hand were two very different things. Growing up in Warrick as she had, Lei'lira had never seen so many people in one place at the same time in her life. The markets back home were usually crowded and lively, but they were nothing compared to what she saw now. Not even seeing the bustle of the city had prepared her for this. Stalls were...everywhere, as far as the eye could see. Merchants called out to the crowd, trying to attract attention to their wares. The noise was incredible. Lei'lira felt more than a little overwhelmed.

But she had come for a reason, and she wasn't going to be able to find what she needed by staying where she was.

Lei'luna, can you help me? It will take forever to find what I need if I have to search through this whole market by my self. And I don't know if Teirue will last that long. But with the two of us looking, it won't take anywhere near as much time.

Her familiar was quick to agree, likely feeling as overwhelmed as Lei'lira did. Once the spirit wolf had vanished into the crowd, Lei'lira began looking for a clothes stall herself. To keep Teirue distracted, she asked the young child to help her look, as well. One thing quickly became clear; everything could be found for sale at the marketplace. It was amazing. That was the only word Lei'lira could think of to describe it. It was also distracting. Lei'lira was looking for one particular thing; clothes. What she found was...everything imaginable except for what she was looking for. Weapons, toys, musical instruments, books, jewelry, spices, every type of food Lei'lira had ever seen, and then some were all there to tempt those who passed by their stalls. Delicious smells mingled in the air, making Lei'lira and Teirue hungry. It would be all too easy for them to stuff themselves silly if they gave in to temptation. But Lei'lira resisted, knowing that a wonderful meal would be available for them back at the Inn. Lei'lira took note of the stall that sold toys, and continued her search.

Before long, Lei'lira had lost all sense of time. She didn't know how long she had been wandering through the market before Lei'luna found them with the news that she had found the stall they needed. It was a very grateful Lei'lira that followed the wolf spirit through the crowd to the clothes stall she had found. Once there, the focus of her search changed. Instead of looking for a stall that sold clothes, she needed to search through the piles of clothing to find what she wanted.

Teirue was a lot of help with this. She was very patient while Lei'lira held several outfits up to her to judge their size, and she had distinct opinions of what colors she liked. That made it much easier to find things the young girl would want to wear. Teirue even helped her pick out colors she thought Eri would like. Since Teirue knew Eri better than she did, Lei'lira took the young child's advice when she offered her opinions of what colors, and types of clothing Eri would like.

Lei'lira knew exactly what she wanted; good quality, simple clothes that the kids could work or play in without fear of messing their outfits up, or ruining them. She also needed more cloth to use as swaddling clothes, and diapers for the twins. In between looking for clothes for Eri and Teirue, Lei'lira found several things for herself, as well. Lei'luna had some opinions in that area, pointing out a few things she thought Lei'lira might like, and her familiar's advice was always good.

The merchant was very helpful as well, offering Lei'lira advice on what was considered popular for kids to wear. It wasn't something Lei'lira cared about herself, but she realized that Eri and Teirue might care about such things, so she thanked the merchant for her advice, taking it more often than not. When she had everything she needed, prices were negotiated for, and settled quickly. Since Lei'lira had bought so much, the merchant offered to have everything sent to Ye Olde Inn if Lei'lira wasn't finished shopping. Lei'kira took the woman's offer gratefully, and thanked her sincerely. Then it was time to head back to the toy stall they'd found earlier.

Teirue's eyes widened in awe at the large selection of toys. But she seemed to know exactly what she wanted, and she headed over to the section that held the dolls, and stuffed animals immediately. It didn't take her long to pick out what she wanted. Lei'lira smiled at Teirue when she showed her what she had picked out. The stuffed cat was fairly realistic looking for a toy, and it vaguely resembled her cat, Shadow. Lei'lira bought the toy, and handed it to Teirue, who cuddled it tightly as she promised to tell her what the cat's name was as soon as she found the perfect name. She grinned at Teirue tiredly as she led the young child away from the stall.

Lei'lira was exhausted. All she wanted to do was get back to the inn, check up on Eri, and put this whole shopping trip behind her. Until she passed by someone who was talking about the "largest bookstore in Rynmere." Lei'lira's eyes lit up with interest, and Teirue's interest in seeing such a place was just as obvious as her own. So Lei'lira fought back a surge of anxiety about talking to a complete stranger, and asked the woman who had spoken where the "largest bookstore in Rynmere" was. Not only was it here in Andaris, it wasn't all that far from where they were now. It took less than a trill for Lei'lira to give in to Teirue's wide, begging eyes as she asked if they could go. How could she not say yes when she wanted to see the bookstore for herself?

In the short time it took for Lei'lira to find the book store, she had built all kinds of images in her mind of what such a paradise might be like. Endless stacks as far as the eye could see filled with knowledge just waiting to be found. What kind of secrets could be found between the pages of a book hidden in a forgotten corner until the right person came along to find it? What kinds of stories were waiting to carry an unsuspecting reader off to strange, beautiful new lands that existed only within their pages? Lei'lira didn't know, but she couldn't wait to find out. If there was anything she loved as much as her children, and her horses, it was books, and discovering what amazing secrets a book might hold.

Lei'lira wasn't disappointed. Upon arrival, she found that the book store was everything she had imagined...and more. Beside her, Lei'luna sighed, knowing that her bondmate was going to lose herself in endless boring books until she could find a way to drag Lei'lira out again. She hoped that Teirue's presence might make that task somewhat easier, since the patience of a three arc old wasn't usually the best, but if Teirue's wide eyed, awed expression was anything to go on, then the young child was just as bad as Lei'lira was.

It wasn't long before they found the children's section. Teirue insisted that they go there first, and Lei'lira decided to indulge her for a number of reasons. Doing so would keep Teirue in a good mood for a longer period of time, allowing Lei'lira to browse the offered books to her heart's content. It would also give her ideas for the kinds of books she would want to buy for the twins when Tiran and Taerin were a little older. And finally, Lei'lira wanted to reward Teirue for being so good during their long shopping trip. The young girl had to be even more tired than she herself was. Many children her age would be throwing screaming fits by now, demanding to go home.

In the far corner of the children's section, a group of children who looked to be about Teirue's age sat quietly in a circle on the floor while someone read them a story. Teirue looked fascinated by the group, and when Lei'lira asked if she wanted to go listen to the story, she nodded eagerly, pleading for permission silently with her eyes. Lei'lira smiled softly as she told the young girl to go join the other children.

At first, Lei'lira began browsing through the shelves nearby so she would be able to hear when the story ended. But one of the other parents noticed her doing this, and told her that the woman who was entertaining the children with stories had just begun, and would be there for several breaks, going on to say that it was something the woman did once a week in the hopes of getting young children interested in reading. This gave Lei'lira to move through the shelves more freely. And she made the most of it, as she selected several books ranging in topic from cooking to gardening, and herbs to Immortals, and more. She even picked out a few stories that looked interesting.

While searching for herself, Lei'lira kept an eye out for books she thought Eri and Teirue would enjoy. She also chose a number of blank journals for each of them. For herself, she chose two; one she could use as a diary, and a second she could use as a breeding journal for her horses. If she was going to be serious about breeding them, then it was important for her to keep track of the parentage of each foal. Since she had learned that both Eri and Teirue liked to draw, she picked up several blank journals, as well as a pen, and an ink well for each of them. She also thought that Eri might appreciate a diary to express her innermost thoughts. The poor girl had gone through a lot in a short amount of time, and the level of trust it would take for Eri to feel comfortable talking to Lei'lira about such things would take time to build. Maybe a long time. Having a diary to confide in might help her to sort out what she was feeling, and deal with her new circumstances.

When Lei'lira had gathered a large number of books, she realized it was time to stop. They would need to be able to carry everything she bought back home with them, after all. But Lei'lira promised herself that she would make a point of coming back to this book store any time she came to Andaris...which would be more often than she had in the past, if for no other reason than to ask if she would be able to free Eri yet. Lei'lira headed back to the children's section to fetch Teirue. Then she headed to the counter to make her purchases.

Notes:
It was interesting seeing Lei'lira interact with Teirue, and her desire to help Eri. Overall the story was quite slow and dry (as one would expect for a shopping trip with little conflict), but the NPC interactions broke it up somewhat. Good job there!
