Ala'ni nestled into Celeste's shoulder, the woman who held on to the child smiled at Rita. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Rita. Thank you for showing us where we might help." Celeste held on to the child and she looked at Xander with an expression which was half hopeful and half concerned. Would he mind her carrying the child? Celeste had to, either way, but she had no wish to cause friction. However, when she looked at him, Xander looked pleased and Celeste smiled a shy smile to him. However, soon there would be a problem, Celeste realised. Ala'ni did not want to let Celeste go, having taken that step of grabbing on. The feeling was mutual, in truth, Celeste had no wish to abandon the child. But there were people who needed feeding.

So, she sat Ala'ni down on the cart and she gave her a bowl of soup. "Now then. Eat all of that please, right here next to me and make sure that your foot it right here on my leg. That's it. Now, we're holding the cart in place, do you see?" There weren't, of course, not at all. Still, the child hooked her foot around Celeste's leg and that was contact. "Then, when you've eaten, you will be in charge of bowls, alright? Eat first though and hold on with your foot till then." The serious young child nodded her head but soon turned back to a child at the sight of the food and picked up her bowl.

Celeste got to work, and she glanced at Xander. "We're fine. I promise you. There is plenty to do, if you wish it Lord Krome." She was more than happy to ladle out soup and he could go and do what he needed to do, help in other places. There would not be any bother here and if there was, there were plenty around who would stop it. There were, after all and for all that she and Rita had teased him, things that he was much better suited to doing than her.

It might, or might not, surprise those around her that Celeste gave exactly one deep ladle of soup to everyone. No halves, no extras, no matter what. She was firm when it came to that; it was fair.

Once Ala'ni had finished, the child 'helped' and Celeste and she dished out food. If Xander wished it, Celeste was sure that Rita could direct him to other jobs which needed doing. She was also sure that he would glance across regularly and when he did he would often see the young woman he was to marry speaking to the child who seemed to be quite comfortable speaking to Celeste, but only by whispering in her ear.

When, finally, all the soup was gone down to the very last drop, Celeste scooped Ala'ni into her arms and made her way to where, coincidentally, Xander and Rita both were. "We have given out all our soup. How can we help now?" Celeste asked and her smile was gentle, genuine and determined. Xander, however, who knew her better might notice how tightly she held on to Ala'ni. She wasn't letting go any time soon.

Rita
Rita couldn't help but smile back at the small child, giving a slight bow to Celeste before departing the group to begin her work. The main hall was set out with six columns of cots with close to ten per row, mostly the young and elderly, but with a fair sprinkling of the impoverished. She felt the eyes flick to her as she opened the door, her Ithecal form causing a stir of interest, some did not trust her kind and she had yet to figure out why. To her surprise, however, two toddlers came over to investigate the strange woman with the darkened skin and part snake. Giggling in excitement as they came over to get a better look. Joy washed over her anxiety, leaning down with a smile.
"Hello little ones," They gargle a hello looking up at Rita, she quickly scans the room for a concerned parent. Seeing Celeste with her attache and smiling at the similarity between the situations. "Hey leave that alone." Pulling her tail away from one hugging it, before booping their nose to playful giggles. "Come on you two, go back to your parent." Shooing them on to more playful giggles, with stories to tell their mother. Rita had work to do, slithering towards the back room at the direction of an assistant.
There was lot's more writing to be done. The local physician was running through everything he had on the illness with copies of books from other areas. She needed to get as much as she could and head out for the college in Andaris if she hoped to find a solution to this plague if there was one to be found. It was a long process but soon enough she had all she needed, thanking her college before moving into the main hall to assist however she could.

--------------------------------

Fever was hard to treat. The patient needed to be cooled and given plenty of fluids. Sometimes medicine helped, but for the most part, there was nothing more they could do. The worst part was when the patient was still alive but slipped into an unwaking sleep. She had encountered these a number of times and there was nothing that could be done, often this was hard for her and the family. Never had she seen so many.
The room was silent, lit only by candles. She passed an apprentice on her way in, the young girls mostly covered giving a bow to the ithecal on the way out. Rita bowed back out of politeness but was mostly focused on the bodies in front of her. They could be thought to be dead, she had heard stories of being buried alive, shuddering at the thought. Slithering over to the first, turning away a curse getting caught in her throat.
"Why... why does this have to happen? why do you let this happen?" Speaking to no one clenching her fist to stop herself crying. "Come on Rita... Do what you need to." She checked each patient, there was nothing more she could do then make sure they were at a comfortable temperature and gauge how hydrated they were. She made sure to note everything down to the littlest detail, more so to distract her than anything else. This was more common than she'd have liked, some of them were close to death but those that were recovering she tried not to think about. With that done she moved on to a table with empty vials set out. Ithical venom made a good anaesthetic in the right mix.
With the less present tasks done she left the dark room, chewing a leaf to numb her aching jaw. She spotted Xander over in the distance, deciding that she wanted to have someone talk back to her. Slithering over, looking at the patients around her, the sickness had affected so many people. It was draining to watch and deal with. Turning back she approached the young man.
"Hey how you holding up? I mean emotionally primarily. Some people struggle with this sort of thing and there is no shame in admitting that. " Waiting for a response before following on "What have you done to keep yourself out of mischief then? " Offering a smile of humour and listening to what he had to tell. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Celeste still working. Turning back and leaning against a table.
"Mind telling me about her?" Thinking for a moment before adding "Like what is she to you?" Hoping that clarified her question.

In truth Xander was very sad to see the people suffering so badly, so many sick and starving. It pained him to see them like that and if he could make them all better he would, he would do anything to see it. The rich and noble were often saved from these horrors, hidden away in their manor houses and castles, protected from the sick. He was also one of those such people, yet, he came out into town much more than many and he was always kind and compassionate to those he met. He put himself out there and showed his good intentions for the Krome people as he knew how important the support of the people would be to his future endeavours.

"I am okay, I just wish the same could be said for these poor folk. I know how hard sickness can hit people, it can tear families apart and ruin many lives." He looked around at them all and saw their faces light up as they received the soup that had been brought for them, he was glad they appreciated it and enjoyed it. He was apprehensive to move far from Celeste though, after the earlier events when she had been attacked just trials before he worried for her safety, the woman had almost no self defence skills. She was as vulnerable as that child she had picked up outside and he would not make the same mistake he had made before of leaving her alone.

What he had done was sadly not very much, he had stood guard and acted as a sort of line monitor. Keeping an eye to make sure everyone queued in a safe and logistically sensible manner, it would have helped no one if they had all run, or stumbles in many cases, and crowded her then food would be spilled and wasted and people would go hungry. "I have just stood mostly making sure everyone gets food and acts sensibly, I would rather some have to wait a few bits to get food than not get any at all and I am sure they would agree if they realised." He looked at the Ithecal and wondered what had drawn her to medicine but did not inquire after the thought.

He looked up at the question about Celeste, he was not the best person to ask at this point, they had not known one another long. "She is to be my wife, we are engaged to marry in Saun. Besides that to be truthful I do not know much, just that she is kind and clearly cares for others as much as herself. I have to admit that it is dangerous to do so, I know that first hand." His guards were up but he was relatively open with the healer, oddly he spoke about more personal things than he would usually.

It was strange, and she knew that it was but she felt safer when Xander was there. That was the simple truth and Celeste stepped back towards the two of them, holding the child tightly in her arms. "Ala'ni and I have finished giving out soup now." Celeste turned her brown eyes to Xander and a slight frown briefly crossed her face. "Her parents are not here." Ala'ni whispered in Celeste's ear and Celeste smiled. "And she says that there is no need to tell you half of it. Her parents are dead."

Maybe neither of them would notice, but Celeste held on to the little girl more tightly as she said that. Turning her gaze to Xander, she knew that there were questions, things she needed to say to him but this was not quite the right time. "And she said to me, earlier, that you are handsome. I think you have an admirer." Her lips lifted in a smile and Celeste looked around with a sigh. "I am going to come back, tomorrow. Now that we have more of an idea of what is needed here, we can do that. With your permission, Lord Krome, I will ask the kitchen to make twice as much stew? We can bring bandages and so on, but blankets and towels seem to be most needed." Blankets for warming people up and cool towels for reducing temperature.

Then, Celeste turned to Rita and asked, in an almost business-like manner which was not really anything other than a coping mechanism, "Is there anything which the healers might need? If we ask the kitchen to prepare high energy snacks, for example, that kind of thing?" Once they had an answer, Celeste looked up at Xander and her expression was troubled. "I can't leave her here, Xander. I can't." Even at the word, the child wrapped her arm around Celeste's neck. The young woman was helpless, completely, in the face of such a basic and emotional response.

Rita
When Xander spoke he spoke with truth. His eyes were cast down with a slight darkness in them, words were softly spoken with a twinge of pain in the past. He'd lost someone close to him, Rita guessed from his body language. She had seen it all too often when looking in the mirror.
" Such is the way the world works, sadly. We live our lives being given so many gifts and then at a certain point they get taken away. That is how our existence works. Tragedy is what makes life, life." His eyes and attention were more focused on celeste, though he showed no disrespect to the Ithical and her words. She understood what he was going through. Not wanting to conversation on such a depressing tone, Rita moved things on trying to get him to think of all the good he had done to cast away the sadness. He was humble in his words, whilst also being thoughtful and controlled.
"Little things are appreciated more so than people realise. We fight an invisible war and far too often we stand alone. " Then she questioned about the beautiful Celeste. The answer was a surprise to her that left more questions than answers, leaving a few bits of silence whilst she looked at Xandra strongly weighing up whether to press on the matter. There was something at the end that she caught onto but couldn't process why with her mind caught up on the first part of his answer.
"Would you kindly explain that, please? The part about not knowing her much. See for us ithical bonds are important and developed between people that are best friends as well as lovers. My mothers knew each other for a long time as close friends before coming together. So is it normal in your culture to marry quickly, without knowing much?" She left the second part. There was only a short amount of time before Celeste got to them, he had time to answer but could shake it off using his fiancee's arrival as an excuse.
Rita turned to face Celeste smiling warmly to her and the child. Her voice was soft as she spoke, a hint of pride placing the child above her. The resolution of to the child's parents was sad, however not unusual.
"If it is not too difficult Ala'ni do you know how your parents died? In concern for your health." She was tempted to press on caregivers but knew maternal affection where she saw it. Tilting her head figuring out how best to phrase her next question. "And on an unrelated note, Celeste, have you been uh... well have you been feeling strange lately. Changes in diet, sleeping patterns, changes in your body. Anything like that?" Struggling to find the words that were polite for the situation, whilst also unsure whether Celeste wanted Xandra to know if what Rita suspected was true. The woman's gaze shifted to Xander, Rita contemplating whether to make a joke at the retelling of the child's comments, deciding to leave it. However, what was said next she wanted to comment on more strongly, second guessing the context and missing the opportunity. Why did common have to be so awkward? Celeste turned back to Rita and asked her question. She tapped her tail giving a few bits to think before nodding.
"Given what we have here, I suspect bandages will be at an acceptable level but towels and blankets definitely. In fact, any supplies are always welcome this far out. Food is good. We often forget to eat so definitely high energy snacks. What we do need is medicine. Processed or raw ingredients, ginger, honey, garlic, garden herbs... just ask one of the medicine makers they can give you a list." A small pause as she thought, hand drifting to the satchel at her side. "Not to seem rude but I do need to make my way to Andaris. I have most, if not all, of the record books for Krome. I suspect that we shall be needing this at the hospital or college. So transport would be greatly appreciated if you are able to offer any. Except for a horse, for obvious reasons" Gesturing to her tail. It was a little bit of a pity, she found horses to be very beautiful beasts. Celeste looked to Xander pleading with him to keep the child, Rita glanced between the two of them taking Celeste's side.
"If I may. In my professional opinion, I advise taking the child in. She needs warmth, rest, and food. Out here she is at risk of abduction or succumbing to the elements. You are the best option for this given how closely she has come to Celeste in such a short amount of time. Here is no good with all the sick people around." The two women watching him, waiting for a reaction.

He had forgotten about differing cultures and of course he was happy to explain to Rita why it was that marriage in Rynmere, especially among nobles, was not always to someone you knew. "Well, in Rynmere, especially among nobles, it is common for a bride and groom to have been brought together by their parents in order to create a political tie. That is the case with myself and Celeste, our parents arranged our marriage in order to further their political prospects. Although, keep it to yourself, I was lucky to have been picked such a wonderful woman." He smiled at the Ithecal, sure she could understand it better now. He was sure it was an odd prospect to a foreigner indeed, the idea of a bride and groom being a stranger to you.

Luckily for Xander he had found himself to enjoy the company of Celeste more than he had expected. Before he could continue to converse with the medic his bride to be joined them, the young girl still on her hip. "Did you feed everyone?" He questioned unsure if they had brought enough with them or not, it was not always easy to tell especially when uninformed on the severity of a situation. He hoped they had all managed to eat and he smiled as he heard what the girl had said about him. It was very sweet but sadly in an area and time like this he did not have the right frame of mind to dwell on it. No he was in leader mode currently, thinking logistically and not with his heart but his head.

Unfortunately it appeared Celeste was only half thinking in such a way. Even as she asked about what the people and healers would need he could sense there was something else bothering her. Of course he felt bad for the girl, having lost her family to the disease. Yet, he was not sure if it was the right thing to do to take the girl to the house. In his head it could have one of two effects on them with those around. Either people would be happy and impressed by them taking the girl to safety or they would feel it unfair and begin to grow angry about favouritism. There were many youngsters wandering around, sick or not, she was not the only one.

"Celeste, I understand why you want to take her but look around you." He gestured to the multitudes of sick and starving people around them."Would it really be fair only to take her, it is a slippery slope from taking one person and having a taking them all. It could even lead to anger towards us. Now I doubt that but I am cautious to risk such actions from people, when they are in such an awful way they act different from normal." He looked at her with apologetic eyes. He would allow her to take the girl back to the house if she really wanted too but he was not completely sure it was a good idea.

He looked at her and rubbed his temples lightly. "I can find you a carriage Rita, I will make sure there is a way for you to get to Andaris don't worry." He then addressed Celeste again. "If you wish to take the girl back with us then do so but be wary that it might cause more trouble than we realise right now. Still, if you wish to do so then you may and I will help you with it." He folded his arms and looked around the crowded room, a sad sight indeed.

The healer asked her, as she rejoined them, if she had been feeling strange lately? "Well, yes." Celeste replied, surprised that the healer could spot such so quickly. "Changes in diet and sleeping patterns certainly. Why? What do you think might be the problem?" Earnest brown eyes turned to Rita and she smiled slightly. "In your expert opinion? I had put it down to the move from the south to the north, but could there be something else?"

As for Ala'ni, the girl whispered again to Celeste and she nodded. "The sickness took them, she says." That was enough for Celeste and when she looked at Xander and he spoke, she nodded. "I understand what you are saying, my Lord, I do. But I will come here and help, every trial if necessary. We will send resources and do all we can." She looked at him and she could not disagree, but there was something quite else going on for Celeste. "We will help all the people here. I... thank you, Lord Krome."

Ala'ni whispered to Celeste and she shook her head, murmuring back. "No, it's fine. It's fine." Turning back to Xander she suggested, "I think we should go back, start to arrange for blankets and supplies, energy filled snacks for the healers that they can eat on the go and stew." Her arms tightened around the child as she spoke, "Bread, too, which can have herbs in it to help healing. If you could tell us what would be good?" Celeste asked Rita, determined that they would do the best they could.

If Xander was willing, then, once they had the information they needed to do this more effectively, they could go back. Until the 75th of that season, when the sickness took ahold of her, Celeste kept coming back every other trial, working with the people and helping them to heal, or helping with the bodies of those taken.

Rita
She listened patiently, nodding her head in understanding as she better understood why the pair knew little about each other.
"I understand now thank you. I had heard reference of arranged marriage in some cultures. I forget how it can be used for political gain. If you want something less messy than politics go into medicine." She joked. It was at that point that Celeste arrived, with conversation passing between the three as they filled each other in on the day's events. Rita shrugged off the parent's death as no concern, considering they were all infected. Even if that was a little morbid. Celestes answers she needed to think about. Mainly on how to tactfully put it. She decided on not.
" Depends. If you two have been in intimacy at any point then you may have conceived. If not then more than likely it's just changes in the environment. Stress, temperature changes, different foods, all those sorts of things lead to these sorts of changes. It's normal, and should settle given a couple of weeks." There was no point being subtle. She asked this sort of question a lot, sometimes to people she didn't want to ask, but such was her line of work. She shifted the conversation on letting the two partners discuss whilst the Ithecal made a note of what she used. Offering her opinion on the fate of the child before returning to her task, half paying attention as Xander made his point on why not, waiting for Celeste making her counter point.
"Probably not my place, but I think this is referred to as a 'No win'. One hand you take the child and get seen as favouring. On the other, you don't and get seen as heartless. Reality is you can't help everyone, learnt that the hard way, but you can help someone and at the end of the day always do something.
In any case, I thank you greatly for the transportation Xander " offering a short bow out of respect for his kindness "Here is a list of everything these healers will need. As I mentioned I'll see what I can about helping with research into this. I may stay in Andaris for a while... Need to make a stop on the way... That's everything, isn't it? Nothing more you require of me? " Turning to the others with a smile.

"I do not think we need to worry about that Rita, myself and Celeste have not yet reached such a stage in our relationship yet." Xander smiled politely and refused his body the blush it considered, pressing down on the emotions as they tried to worm their way up. Of course if Xander had known anything about childbearing then he would have realised her evaluation of any symptoms of being that. As it was he was a little confused as to how they had reached this topic. It was unusual for him to be lost in a conversation but as it was he had managed to lose the thread. "I think we can put any strange feelings and symptoms Celeste has been experiencing down to the change of home, it is likely the cause." Again he smiled and then looked around at all the sick, his face quickly retreating to one more sorrowful.

Xander took the list and read over it, long and filled with many different items but it was a worthy cause for his house to spend its money on. If not it would likely be wasted on pointless parties or items totally unnecessary, at least that was the way of his parents. "We shall make sure these items are provided for the people and healers alike, make sure the most that can be done is." He paused and looked at the faces oft he sick, some who may not make it through the night. "I would hate to see so many people suffer while I live in complete comfort."

Nothing else was required and in fact it was time they be on their way and so with a shake of the Ithecal's hand Xander said his goodbyes. Wishing the woman look on her travels and telling her the carriage would be around soon. Then he took up the soup hand wagon and began the journey back home, Celeste and her new companion along side him. The hefty wagon in tow as they trekked back to the safety of the Northern Krome House to get ready for what was to come for poor Krome and Rynmere.
