[Warrick] The Trouble with Children

19 Cylus, 717

It was snowing again. That was no surprise given the season. But it did make Lei'lira huddle deeper into her black cloak and quicken her steps as she headed out to check on her animals. Her first stop was the stallions' stable. Darkwind, and Thunder were both quite content. The stable was warm, they had plenty of straw to protect against drafts, and plenty of fresh water. Lei'lira gave them each a handful of grain as a treat, before leaving to check on her mares.

With Kaiyu and Smokey both due to foal in Ashan, Lei'lira couldn't help but be anxious for them. In her desire to make sure everything went well, she felt the need to check up on them several times each trial. She was so focused on her goal that she didn't notice anything out of the ordinary until she put her hand on the door, and it opened on its own, without her having to undo the latch.

Lei'lira froze in startled fright; there was only one reason why the latch would be undone when she wasn't in the barn. Someone was in there. Lei'lira took a deep breath to calm herself. She couldn't hear anything out of the ordinary. There were no sounds of distressed horses coming from within. That told her that whoever was inside was not there to try and steal her horses.

Lei'lira took a few trills to steel herself, then entered the barn as quietly as she could. There, curled up in the straw was a girl who looked to be about thirteen arcs old. She was curled up around a much younger girl who couldn't be more than three arcs. Both girls were fast asleep.

They were partially buried in the straw in a clear attempt to keep warm, but Lei'lira could see that they were both thin. Both had painful looking bruises, but the older girl had more of them. It seemed to Lei'lira that she might have been trying to protect the younger child from harm. Were they related? Sisters, perhaps? What kind of horrible person could have hurt them like that?

Lei'lira was trying to decide whether she should wake the exhausted looking girls and question them, or let them sleep when a loud booming voice took that decision away from her.

"There you are!"

Lei'lira cringed inwardly, and froze at the sound of the angry male voice coming from behind her. But the two girls had a very different reaction. They woke immediately, and scrambled to their feet in alarm. The older girl scooped the younger one up, and bolted. Or tried to, at least.

Lei'lira found herself being shoved to one side as someone ran past her. That someone turned out to be one of the local guard, and he grabbed the older girl roughly, causing her to drop the younger one. Both girls cried out, one in fear, and one in angry protest. The younger girl tried to crawl away as a fierce struggle broke out between the guard, and the older girl. Fearing that the young child might be hurt worse than she already had been, Lei'lira rushed over, and guided her away from the fight.

"What's your name, little one?" she asked softly as she took off her cloak, and wrapped the young child up in it.

The young girl looked up at her with wide, terrified eyes. She glanced back towards where the older girl was trying to free herself from the guard with uncertainty, then turned back to Lei'lira. Perhaps the young girl saw something she thought she could trust in Lei'lira as she studied her warily. Or perhaps, it was the act of kindness when Lei'lira gave her the cloak. But just when Lei'lira was about to give up getting an answer from the young child, she spoke in a tiny, timid voice.

"Teirue."

Lei'lira smiled soothingly.

"That's a very pretty name, Teirue. My name is Lei'lira. It's very nice to meet you."

Teirue giggled softly, and Lei'lira grinned at her.

"What's your friend's name? Is she your friend? Or maybe your sister?"

Teirue glanced back at the fight that had managed to find its way out of the barn, and into the snow, much to the relief of Lei'lira's horses.

"Not my sister." Teirue said softly.

"Is she your friend, then?" Lei'lira asked patiently.

Teirue nodded vigorously.

"And what is your friend's name?"

Teirue looked at Lei'lira cautiously.

"The bad people call her Little Bitch, but Teia calls her Eri...Eri...Eriana?"

Teirue nodded.

"Eriana. But it's hard for me to say that sometimes, so I call her Eri."

Bad people? Who are these bad people? Are they the ones who hurt these children? And who is Teia?

It seemed as though the few answers she had gotten from the young child had only given her even more questions. But the need for patience was obvious. Teirue was such a timid little girl. It would be easy to frighten her into silence. And she was so young...she might not even know the information that Lei'lira needed to know. It was more likely that she wouldn't.

"Eri must be a good friend. Did she bring you here to escape the bad people?"

Teirue nodded.

"And what about Teia? Is she here somewhere, too?" Lei'lira asked as she looked around.

Teirue shook her head as she began to cry softly. Lei'lira knelt down beside the child, and wrapped her arms around her protectively.

"She...she was screaming." Teirue sobbed.

Lei'lira's arms tightened around Teirue reassuringly.

"Teia was screaming. The bad men were hurting her. Eri was crying. Teia's her sister, and she really wanted to help her...but she couldn't. The bad men would hurt her, too. So she took me and ran."

Lei'lira realized that Eri must have used the distraction caused by whatever the "bad men" were doing to this Teia...and her imagination was quick to offer her own thoughts on what the "bad men" might have been doing to make her scream. The older girl likely had some protective feelings for Teirue. Maybe it was because they were friends. Or perhaps it was because Teirue was so much younger than the older girl was. Either way, Eri saw an opportunity, grabbed Teirue, and ran.

Lei'lira knew that Teirue wouldn't be able to tell her much else. She was just too little to understand much of what might have happened. They needed to know who the "bad people" were. And they needed to know where Teirue's and Eri's families were. Lei'lira was more than happy to let Teirue stay with her until they found her family; maybe Eri too, if she wanted to. But their families needed to be found. Hopefully, Eri would be able to tell them more.

Lei'lira glanced over towards where the guard was trying to subdue Eri, only to find that he had managed to do so while she'd been talking to Teirue. Her right shoulder had been bared during the fight. From where Lei'lira was standing, she could see a palm sized star within a circle with wavy lines coming out of each point of the star branded into the girl's shoulder.

"I'm sorry that this thief bothered you, Mrs. Warrick. I'll take her, and her little partner off your hands now, and leave you in peace."

Thief?

Lei'lira wasn't sure what to think. She was so young...surely she couldn't be a criminal? Her thoughts were interrupted when a tiny hand tugged at her shirt timidly.

"Yes, Teirue? What is it?"

"It's my fault."

Lei'lira frowned.

"What's your fault, Teirue?"

Lei'lira listened carefully as the young child explained that Eri had stolen while they were running from the "bad people," but she had stolen things like food when they were hungry, and shoes for Teirue since she didn't have any, and her feet had gotten hurt without anything to protect them from the rocks, and snow.

"What was I supposed to do? Let Teirue and I starve to death?" an angry voice demanded from beside the guard.

"You could have bought what you needed like everyone else." the guard said sternly.

"I don't have any money, so how was I supposed to pay for it, huh? And before you say get a job, I can't do that, either. We were captured by bandits. We've already seen signs of them chasing after us. If we stay in any one place for too long, they'll find us, and catch us again! Our families are dead, so we can't just go back home, neither. The bandits killed everyone they didn't capture when they raided our farms! Look...I'm sorry that I stole what we needed...but I didn't have any choice!"

"You could have come to the local guards. Don't you think that a group of bandits running around raiding farms is something that we need to know about?"

Eri tried to pull free of the guard's firm grip, and glared up at him when she failed.

"Do you really think it's that easy? Would they have believed me if I had gone to them?"

The guard's hesitation was all the answer that Eri needed. She renewed her efforts to free herself, struggling madly until the guard gave her a knock on the head hard enough to leave her swaying dizzily on her feet, barely able to stand, never mind struggle. Lei'lira protested, but when the guard insisted that he was only doing his job, and hadn't used enough force to cause any real harm, Lei'lira subsided, knowing that he was right.

"What will happen to them?" she asked softly.

"I'll take them into Andaris. The older girl will be registered, and sold at the next auction. If she hasn't been given the Rynmere brand yet, they will do it before selling her. As for the little one...if she's marked too, then she'll be sold as well. If not, they'll turn her loose."

"But she's too young to be left on her own!" Lei'lira protested.

The guard shrugged.

"If she really is an orphan, what else can they do?"

"I'll take her." Lei'lia said firmly.

The guard stared at her.

"I've got a good sized farm here, and there's plenty of room here. She can live with me, and the twins."

"But...but you're a Warrick! Do you really mean to tell me that you plan to adopt some...some nobody into your family? What would your grandmother say?"

"Yes, that is exactly what I plan to do, and I really don't care what my grandmother would say. I can't give Teirue the Warrick name, of course...not without permission that I am not likely to get. But I can take her in, and raise her as if she was my own daughter, and that is what I will do."

The two girls stared at her. Teirue's eyes were filled with awe, and wonder. Eri's expression was more wary, and jaded. But there was a hint of awe in her eyes as well. Lei'lira glanced at Eri thoughtfully.

"What if I was to buy Eri and free her?"

The guard stared at her again. Eri's eyes widened in hope.

"But...but...you'd have to go all the way to Andaris to do that! Even if you buy her, she needs to be registered first!"

"Then I'll do that. I'm the one who found the children in my barn. Surely I could go with you?"

"But...even if you did that, you wouldn't be allowed to just free her. Look, good reason or not, the kid is still a thief. By law, she has to be punished for that. As a slave, she can't pay the proper fine for the goods she stole. So instead, whoever buys her won't be allowed to free her until her punishment has been served. It would probably be a year before you could free her."

Lei'lira looked at Eri. The child didn't deserve to be punished for doing what she needed to do to keep herself and another child alive. It wasn't as though they had hurt anyone, or even taken anything that was all that valuable. Lei'lira didn't like the idea of going all the way to Andaris in the best of times, never mind traveling in Cylus. It was snowing lightly now, and the temperatures were likely to plummet at night just as they had the past several trials. She hated the thought of owning a slave even more. And yet...if she did buy Eri, she could treat the girl more like family than like a slave. She would have chores to do, of course. Just like anyone else who lived on a farm. But the work would be reasonable; not more than a child could do comfortably. There would be plenty of time for her to learn, and explore, and play. And if she seemed interested in her work, Lei'lira could teach her what she knew about raising animals. Eri would be a slave on paper, but it would be on paper only. And as soon as she was able to free the girl, she would do so.

"So be it."

The guard shook his head.

"Fine. Whatever. Since you'll be traveling with me, I'll let you borrow some of the travel gear the guard is issued. But you'll have to provide your own horse. And you'll have to be ready in a few breaks. There's a guard station about half a trial's ride from here, and I want to reach it before it gets too cold to travel."

Lei'lira nodded, her mind whirling with plans. There was a lot she needed to get done, and not much time to do it in. It was far too cold to travel with the twins, so she would have to leave them with her neighbor. With luck, one of them would be willing to see to her farm while she was gone, or she'd have to ride out to another neighbor, and ask them to help. She had supplies to pack, money to gather, a horse to ready...the list went on.

"I'll be ready." was all Lei'lira said as she picked Teirue up, and carried her into the cottage before she got to work.

Comments: I apologise that this has taken me so long to review. It was very good. Since this is an ongoing story, I am not giving Teirue/Eriana to you as adoptive daughter/slave respectively. I will need you to submit these NPC write-up's to the Prophet Support Forum for approval at the time that you complete this story in Andaris.

I'm bad, and that's good. I will never be good, and that's not bad. There's no one I'd rather be then me.
