Amaris heard Padraig shout, saw Jackson move but there was absolutely nothing that could be done about it, by that time. As Amaris backpedaled and thwapped at the purple spiders, the result was obvious. It was like popping purple-goo-filled balloons. They splatted horribly and covered Amaris' hands in a vile substance.

The large spider-snake bit into Jackson Eclipse and his scream, which had briefly harmonised in an almost awful beauty with Amaris' screams, stopped. The spider snake lifted it's head and his limp body raised into the air. Judging by the blood on the floor and the amounts still pouring out of him, the way that his body moved, it was fair to assume to all who looked, that Jackson Eclipse was very dead.

Lakia, through chattering teeth and with the feeling of approaching hypothermia being, frankly, the least of her worries, gave advice and both she and Padraig listened to it. Lakia fired arrow after arrow, this time aiming for the bulbous abdomen. Padraig tried to haul Amaris out of the way, but he also fired, and fired again. As he hauled Amaris, he might notice that their tall companion was, in fact, covered in a strange purple goo all over their hands. Mostly, though, he and Lakia concentrated on continuing to attack.

Each time, the bolts and arrows were absorbed into the creature.
Image
Every shot was absorbed, the spider-snake growing and glowing more with each hit. Did anyone notice the small spiders doing the same any more? Probably not, in fairness. They were kind of busy.

Unwittingly and without desire to, in that fashion at least, Jackson Eclipse bought them time. The spider snake lifted it's head with him in its maws and used it's two front-most legs to grab his body. Smaller than the other legs, these worked well as appendages for holding it's food and that was what they did now. Sharp pincer-thin talons grabbed him and Amaris and Padraig got to see, and they all got to hear the sound of the spider-snake biting through bone as it literally bit him in half.

It did, however, give them some brief moments where they were shooting without fear of being bitten themselves. However, Lakia was beginning to feel faint from blood loss and pain. Every arrow loosed was making the wounds on her hand worse, blood was pouring and her head was starting to spin.

As Padraig and Amaris got covered in a shower of blood which had once belonged to their former guide, Lakia felt consciousness start to slip from her. Sheer force of will was keeping her conscious, but it was running out. Every arrow of Lakia's and every bolt of Padraig's had hit, there was no doubt, but still the thing kept coming.

They were in a dire situation indeed. And then, three things happened simultaneously. Amaris stepped on a small, purple spider. The crunch beneath a booted foot might not normally be something anyone would notice, but the word small here was relative. Small compared to the big enormous spider-snake, yes. But now, these purple spiders were roughly the size of an orange. So, as Amaris' foot came down the resulting crunch and splatter was noticeable. Was it that which prompted the next things, or was it Lakia's arrow or Padraig's bolt? No one could really know but as that small purple spider died under Amaris' boot, every purple spider in the cavern exploded.

Purple goo splatted everywhere and where it landed, it hissed unpleasantly. Amaris might even notice that her foot felt a strange sensation, quite unknown for a while.

Warm.

Ice sizzled under the acidic purple goo, which hadn't been acidic before. However, it was likely that Lakia and Padraig might not even notice that at this point. What they all certainly would notice, however, was the sudden onset of a high pitched screeching, like steam escaping from somewhere where there was a lot of steam, a lot of pressure, and a very very small hole.

It came from the spider-snake and, as last of the small purple spiders exploded into acidic goo, with a scream of truly horrific proportions, so too did the spider snake explode. It's insides weren't purple. Nor were they the blue of a usual spider or the red of blood.

No, the insides of this enormous beast were a deep mustard yellow. It was inevitable that they would all get some purple acid-goo and some mustard yellow-goo (properties currently unknown) on them. There were also many, many spider parts and pieces of spider-snake. There were the scattered remains of Jackson Eclipse in there, too, rather unfortunately mixed in. It was carnage.

And the little furry white spiders scuttled around, burning up individually as they inadvertently got covered in, or scuttled on, the purple acid.

Niv has missed one round of posting.
ALL: The purple goo is acid. For most of you, that won't be a problem other than needing to wipe it off your shoes.
Amaris: The bottom of your boot is being eaten away by acid. That's the warm sensation.
Amaris & Padraig: The strange and unpleasant dryness and taste in your mouth is getting even worse. It feels like your tongue is frozen. It isn't, but it feels like it.
Niv: If you leave the safety of the wall, there is a lot of goo and you might get hurt.
Lakia: You are soaking wet and freezing cold. Your hand is bleeding profusely. You won't lose consciousness, but you feel faint. You are in urgent need of medical attention.
I will post again on the 23rd May or sooner if everyone has posted by then.
This thread, and this adventure, is closed to new players.

Lakia growled as their arrows appeared to be doing nothing to the spider yet. Not helping matters was that her aim got steadily worse with each arrow she fired, meaning that eventually, she would start missing. However, the spider did eventually go the way of it's brethren, though not until it had slaughtered their guide and its companions had covered the place in acidic goop.

Bending over, Lakia wrapped her hand in her coat and wiped as much of the purple goo off as she could. The yellow didn't appear to be burning and she hoped whatever properties, if any, it did have would help her stay alive. At the moment however, she needed to get over to people who could help her stay alive. However, the moment she took a step, her head spun and she had to fight to stay upright and aware.

After a moment, she took a deep breath and wrapped her bleeding hand in another part of her coat and started towards where the others were. Her vision blurred and the only reason she could make out who was who was their positions. With each step, her vision blurred more and more until, finally, she stopped walking altogether. "H-h-h-help m-m-m-me." she chattered, falling to her knees as she struggled to stay conscious, know that falling asleep would be very, very bad.

[Moderated Thread] Mapping the Ice Caves: Trial 2

Imagining that the giant spider-snake might swell so much that it might eventually explode was one thing. Witnessing it actually happening was another. But it was the least of it. Even as he'd fired, Padraig became an unfortunate witness to Jackson Eclipse's violent death and it's aftermath. All he could do was shout out "No!" as it happened. But he was powerless to stop it.

If he stopped firing, if he stopped to think about it there were others who could die because of it. And him too, come to think of it. At least he'd managed to get Amaris out of the way, less likely to be the thing's next target. But that was before a strange squelching sound reached his ears, and the giant predator literally exploded and rained purple and yellow goo down on them all. Previously he'd discovered that he'd a very strong gag reflex. Even now, as he saw bits of Jackson Eclipse fly through the air and even bounce off his shoulder, the tendency reared its ugly head.

But even before he lowered the arm that he'd used to shield his face from the worst of it, he heard Lakia call out for help. "Get as much of that stuff off you as you can," he said quickly to Amaris before dropping his bow and grabbing his sack. "Don't wait for it to eat through your clothing."

He picked his way through the carnage in order to get to Lakia, glancing around only briefly in search of Niv? Had she been snatched up when he wasn't looking, like a tiny hors d'oeuvre on a cracker? He hoped not, but the more immediate problem was Lakia and he dropped his sack and knelt down beside her. "Try to stay awake," he said, pulling what he'd need out of the bottom of his bag. To say he had a very well stocked and organized medical kit with him would be putting it mildly. Sorted, labeled, it appeared Faith had outdone herself.

He wasn't a medic, but a physicist, alchemist and chemist. But over time, some of what Faith knew had rubbed off on him. In fact, among the supplies in his kit were a few things they'd conceived off together. "We've got to get the bleeding stopped first," he said. Not so much as a source of information but the sound of his voice might give her something to focus on as he propped up her head a little. So elevating the limbs in question, Padraig used a bandage and the pencil he'd been taking notes with to apply a tourniquet.

Next, with the water he'd brought with him, he cleaned the wounds before choosing another bottle from his kit to disinfect them. A salve followed, and then he pulled out yet another small vial and showed it to her. Again, something to focus on. "This is a raft. Faith and I created it together. It's a liquid that will become a bandage and do double duty. Draw out infection and keep things clean. It brushed on, and within trills it had taken on a consistency much like her skin itself.

Then of course there was the matter of hypothermia, and having propped her up in a relatively clean space...sort of, all things considered, he pulled a number of the sacks full of orange sand from her pack and wrapped them loosely around her extremities. "Keep your fingers and toes moving," he advised as he gave her his flask to drink from. She needed a proper medic, he knew as he sat back on his heels and looked around. But hopefully he'd done enough to keep her going till they found their way back to civilization.

"I think," he suggested, "that we find a way out of this area where we can rest for a spell. She may be in shock," he added with a glance at Amaris. "And then I'd suggest that we turn our focus away from exploring and mapping, to finding a way out of here and back to the surface." They'd already lost a member of their party, Amaris seemed traumatized at the least, and Lakia needed a medic.

Standing, Padraig spent a bit or two working on getting the goo off himself, and then pondered Jackson's demise. Ordinarily he wouldn't consider leaving a body behind. But this case was different. There really wasn't any sort of body to recover, and trying to return his remains to the surface would cost them time and energy they just didn't seem to have.

Silence.

That was what it was. It was silent. Which gave them the briefest trill to catch their breaths before it became obvious that at least one of them was in a very bad way. Lakia called for help and, whilst Amaris and Niv were stuck or frozen or just too shocked to do anything, Padraig moved. He didn't see Amaris remaining stock still, not heeding his advice.

As Padraig moved, he looked for Niv but could not see her. It didn't mean she wasn't there, of course, it just meant that she was small, there was a lot of goo and gloop and Padraig really didn't have the time to spare to stop and look.

He arrived at Lakia's side and he saw that she was bleeding profusely. There was a lot of blood already and she did not look at all well. Not at all. Yet, she was mostly conscious and he propped up her head, and elevated her arm. One of those was a very good thing to do, but as the inevitable reality of gravity meant that raising her head made it harder for the blood to get to her brain, Lakia felt more woozy. Not that either of them knew why, at that point, but it was worth to note.

However, raising her head was a mistake easily made by a non-medical medic. If she got a concussion, she'd be glad he did it then. Raising her arm however was a very very good thing to do and Lakia's bleeding slowed. The tourniquet with a pencil meant that Padraig could tighten it more than if he had needed to try and apply it with both hands whilst maintaining pressure. It was not easy to do, even then and he had to twist it to the point that it hurt. Lakia felt it, the bandage biting into her arm and the pain was very real.

But the blood flow stopped.

Which meant that Padraig could clean her would and then apply the transparent and very strange substance called "The Raft" to her hand. It felt like someone was pouring honey on to her palm, but then it quickly dried and it did, indeed, hold her skin together and was transparent so allowed Lakia to see it. The moment of truth, of course, was when he released the tourniquet, but when he did it was fine. The raft held and the wound was as taken care of as it could be.

Padraig's suggestion was that they get themselves somewhere where they could rest and then, after that rest, they should stop mapping and instead start trying to work on a means of escape. The reality was simple ~ in terms of resting, they had no choice. Lakia had to rest, she simply had to.

At the far (for want of a better direction) North of this room there was a large area (marked on the map) where they could rest. It was free of goo and, now that Padraig looked, it was free of spiders. It wasn't the only place, there were a few, but they could all get there.

Lakia would need to be half-carried, or completely carried to the area, but once there could be set up with the bags of warm sand and blankets. She had to rest, she had no option at all and it would be a good few breaks before she was strong enough to move. Amaris was in shock and Niv was in a situation of being tiny in a very big, scary place. Arwel was missing (had anyone noticed that before?) and Jackson was very dead.

Maybe, once they'd rested, things would look better.

Then again......

The Review
Amaris

[googlefont=Raleway

Overview

Oh poor Amaris! Totally so much more than had been expected, I suspect, when they signed up for this event. I am so impressed with the honesty and consistency with which you play Amaris, you are always completely true to character. The visual of this big tall mixed blood running and then landing with an oof and crying was pitiful, and so well written! At no point did I find your choice to use a non-gendered pronoun confusing, which isn't an easy feat to write, so definite kudos there. I had great fun writing alongside you in this adventure, as I hope you did too!

Lakia is so brave! I have been so impressed with her as a pc during this series of threads ~ she's a quiet leader and a very good companion to have. I'd certainly be pleased to have her at my back in a crisis! I laughed aloud when she warned Jackson she was going to do something stupid and asked him not to let her drown. She's in a bad way, yet she has this kind of rugged determination that is just awesome. I've really enjoyed writing with you for this thread ~ hope you have too!
