[Bounty] A little mouse with clogs on.

When he likened himself to one of those fat cats ladies had, Vega guffawed in delight. "It's funny, that's exactly what I was thinkin' of, you know. When I used the words. Come 'ere let me give you a little scritch be'ind the ear," Vega couldn't help the grin on her face as she teased him. They spoke no more about where they went or how they undoubtedly went wherever it was together ~ there wasn't a need and Immortals forbid that they ever get themselves involved in any kind of Awkward Conversation. That would be dreadful.

There might be more than one, she agreed. It could be one or three or half a dozen, she couldn't really say for sure one way or another, but it did make sense. "The further on we get an' the more we see, I guess, the better picture we can build." His logic was sound, she admitted, when it came to there having to be more than one of any living thing. "Takin' what you're sayin' there, it could be that we're fightin' against a mamma an' a pappa weird thingie. Or some cousins. Siblings. I mean, you know, who knows. All of the above." Vega shot him a grin and carried on moving.

So, after she'd plucked up the courage to do it, she asked him about the university and Vega would have to admit that Arlo's response surprised her. In a very good way, but it surprised her nonetheless. His answer wasn't at all what she'd expected and for all that Vega was pleased, her frown returned. "I thought there was a girl involved there? You know. You. An' her." Vega waved her hand in the direction of 'not here' and that would have to do for communication. "I mean. I dunno. I assumed you jus' didn't want to introduce me an' that's a'right. I've got friends I don't introduce you to," she said. Then, of course, she realised that it was a total lie.

Well, hopefully he didn't notice, she thought.

And then, they waited. And waited. Vega was surprisingly (perhaps) patient when it came to that. She remained crouched and she too kept hold of her bow, notched and ready to release. As the canopy of trees cleared, though, they got sight of a very large creature - much larger than the panther it resembled would ever be. It's body was easily twice the size of a panther and as it landed on it's back legs, it's wingspan was massive. With a high pitched screech, it dropped the dead sheep in it's mouth and as Vega breathed in, it turned to look at them. With a screeching sound it roared at them and started to move towards them. Vega wasted no time and released an arrow, aiming at it's eye but embedding itself in the creatures neck as it roared again. Rather than rush towards it, which had resulted in the bruises which she still had all over her when she had done that with the snake, and following a lively discussion between the two of them regarding tactics, Vega drew another arrow and took aim once more.

"Well you know what they say about family," Arlo said when Vega wondered just how many of the mysterious creatures there might be. So far as those related, one to the other that was. And what exactly did they say about family? Arlo had no idea, so better she didn't ask him to elaborate. He suspected though that where dangerous creatures dwelt, even mortal two legged folk maybe, a mother's rage might be something to see and better avoid, should her offspring be put in danger. With that in mind, Arlo took a second look around the clearing they'd stumbled across, just in case there were any unhatched eggs or signs of young offspring. He didn't see any.

But wouldn't it make sense, he wondered quietly to Vega, that so many kills might be a sign of at least one feeding a number of others? He'd rather not find out. A girl though? At the university? Arlo seemed genuinely perplexed as he looked her way. "Why would you think there was a girl?" Not that there [/i]couldn't[/i] be, but only that there wasn't. What was it that had made her assume there was? "I haven't told you because there isn't one." Still, he frowned when she mentioned friends of her own, some she hadn't told him about. Arlo wasn't sure why, but straightaway he didn't like it. "Who?" he asked.

But then there was good reason to conceal themselves and stop talking, and focus on more immediate dangers. Whatever it was that was casting the shadows in the treetops for instance, and what was about to crash through them. Then they saw it, and for a few trills, time stood still as Arlo took in the sight. The largest cat he'd ever seen, bigger than life...But with wings? What a prize that thing would be, and suddenly he wasn't as concerned about the bounty as he was the challenge of landing something like that.

But then of course it spotted them. There wasn't time to think, but to let their instincts guide them both. Neither rushed forward. In this case it would have been foolish. Vega aimed for a killing shot. But Arlo, remembering some of the things they'd come across where the first killing shots had done anything but...Well, with luck her arrow would drop the thing on the spot. In the meantime, Arlo took quick aim at one of the animal's upper thighs, thinking that if her shot didn't drop the enormous winged cat, his own might cripple it at least and slow it down, buy them both time to load and fire again.

She had no idea what "they" said about family, but Vega wasn't going to admit that to him. It was probably a common expression among the land dwelling folks and she had no wish to show her ignorance. So, instead, she kept quiet and just kept her eyes open. She agreed, so many kills might mean that there was one feeding a number of others and Vega gave him a slightly grim look as they discussed it. Huntress she was, no doubt, but she didn't want to go killing a feeding mother or protective parent. She sincerely hoped this whole conscience she was developing went away soon.

When he said there was no girl at the university though, Vega's eyes swirled a vivid lilac. Why did she think that? "Well, you know. You." Helpful, she knew. Then, in fairness, helpful wasn't Vega's first priority. "I dunno, I just thought you were. That there was a girl you had eyes for an' that was why you wanted to stay here an' stuff." She shrugged slightly. "I mean, I was happy for you," she was, that was true, but she also wasn't. "Although, I was a bit hurt I suppose that you didn't wanna introduce me, but I understood." It was a genuine grin she gave when she said that. Self awareness wasn't high on Vega's list of attributes but she knew herself well enough to know that she could be difficult and obnoxious. Also, that women tended not to like her. "If I ever get a boyfriend, you're never meeting him," she quipped and chuckled slightly.

"Bert," she replied without pause when he asked who her friends were that she hadn't introduced to him. "I've got a friend called Bert. I haven't introduced you to 'im. Though you've been in the same room as 'im." With a glance and an apologetic shrug she admitted that Bert was, in fact, a small stuffed bear which she'd kept ahold of from her childhood and was in the chest in her bedroom aboard her father's ship. "I don't have any friends you don't know. I just said that cos I didn't want you feeling like you had to feel sorry for me, you with your girlfriend and all your new clever buddies. What you frownin' for, anyhow?" Vega quirked an eyebrow at him. "It's not that unlikely that there might be people in the world who like me, you know."

The time for banter, though, stopped as they waited and then, as the huge thing landed and then she fired, but Vega cursed knowing full well that she hadn't hit the eye even before it embedded in the neck. It was thick fur, certainly, but other than that it wasn't armored or anything, so it embedded in and the thing screeched. Vega took aim and took another shot, taking her time and aiming. "You pickin' yer nose, sunshine?" Was the only comment that he got, but since she took her time, this time, she got it again and this one was a much better shot. She didn't bother going for the eye this time, since it wasn't armoured or anything. Another neck shot and it fell, though it continued to scream.

"Damnit, Arlo what do..." she was going to ask one thing when an answering screech came from the skies above them.

There was no girl at the university. There never had been. The reason, Arlo had told her, that he was choosing to remain in Scalvoris a little longer was because they were both staying. And when they moved on, so long as it was what they each wanted, then they both would. Together. He hoped she wouldn't pursue the question any farther, and leave it at that. Pressed to explain all the little bits and pieces behind it, Arlo would have come up against questions he wasn't prepared to examine too closely. Not right now anyway.

For instance, when Vega told her about her friend, the one he hadn't known about, he had an immediate and nonsensical urge to punch Bert. Just walk right up and punch some unsuspecting fellow out of the blue without saying why. "When have I?" he'd asked with a curious frown when she said they'd shared a room at some time or other. Since the time he'd met Vega, in fact since he'd left home, he'd been in very few spaces indoors. With or without her. But when she told him that Bert wasn't an actual person but a stuffed bear, he grinned a little and shook his head. He'd have looked pretty silly hauling off and punching a stuffed toy for no reason at all.

"That's a foolish way to think," Arlo told her. "I don't feel sorry for you. You'd have all the friends you could stomach. If you wanted them." That was that though and there was a more immediate problem. The big winged cat thing had been eyeing and stalking them, like either or both of them was to be it's next meal. Looking back, it might not have been the best choice to go for a wounding shot while she'd gone for a kill. Ultimately the thing was dying, thanks to her, while still trying to get at them with a bum leg that he'd inflicted on it. That wound wouldn't have mattered much. Dead was dead. As it happened though, it was just as well. Because there was another one coming at them from above.

Arlo's gaze shot up towards the canopy and he didn't have time to tell her the whys, what he'd done what he had. Instead, an arrow already loaded up in his shortbow, he leaped to his feet, took quick aim as the wounded beast's mate crashed through the branches and leaves, and let his arrow fly. Straight and true, he had a very good vantage, and the arrow sank deep into the creature's left eye. The high pitched cry in response was an unholy thing, but it went into a tumble and took out several small branches on its way down, ultimately to land in a heap on top of its mate. Both of them dead, in truth Arlo felt a little guilty about that. But at the end of the trial, it had been them, or him and Vega.
