11th Saun, 717
Finally, all the answers were given. Kai presented the bowl to his employer, who picked each piece up and read it carefully. With the first paper, he looked at Faith with a smile. Next he looked at Kura, and then to Tio, his brow raised ever so slightly. To Padraig next, with a chuckle, and finally to Mero with a sad sort of smile. Putting the paper back in the bowl, the Baron stood slowly as Kai returned to her post by the doors.
"Firstly, I want to say thank you to you all. You have been delightful guests, and it has been a genuine pleasure hosting you in my home this trial." Taking a deep breath and leaning on his cane with both hands, Rodriguez continued.
"It is true, what most of you suspected. This story was not a myth, but in fact a true crime committed a long long time ago. Lord Crow was indeed myself, and Lady Canary was my fiancé. Ophelia Swan was her name, and she was possibly the kindest and most caring human I have ever met." He spoke quietly, but his voice was strong and unwavered by emotion. Walking towards the staff, he looked at the guests with a steely blue gaze.
"Some of you guessed The Seamstress, and I can tell you that at the time that was the suspect that the Sargent concluded as well. She was imprisoned for her crime, and died in that cell cold lonely and ever pleading her innocence. There was never any needle or pin from her sewing collection that we ever found to prove her guilt, but at the time it was assumed she simply discarded it." Shaking his head sadly, the silver haired man looked at Mero.
"Some of you guessed suicide. I remember rumors, for years after, that Ophelia couldn't bare to tell me she didn't actually love me, and so took death as her only out. I can assure you though, this was never the case." Moving again, he turned to look at Mordrid with a cold stare.
"One of you however, guessed The Handmaiden. Ophelia's close friend and constant companion. Even a bridesmaid in the wedding. Interesting choice. I know at the time, I suspected her too, but it was thrown aside. The Seamstress had the tools and time to do it, and had brushed off Ophelia's mention of a stiff neck. The Handmaiden was her friend, and was ever so devastated when she died. Who could possibly suspect her." Turning around he locked his gaze on Kura, lifting a hand from the cane to point at her.
"Kura, what made you suspect The Handmaiden? Was it the fact that she was always with the Lady, in every scenario? Or the fact she was the last to leave the room, locking the doors behind her? Or was it the fact that she was so quick to point the finger at The Seamstress? Maybe it was the little detail most people missed. Mordrid, perhaps you can tell us what that was?" The blonde woman who had been staring ahead with a deadpan face, slowly turned her eyes to look at the Baron with a nervous lick of her lips.
"The hair." Lord Smooglenuff snapped his fingers and made a face of false delight, turning to face the woman as he spoke.
"The hair! Yes the hair. The Handmaiden was going to do Ophelia's hair for the wedding. In fact, when we...discovered her...the Lady's hair was up in the same hairstyle she'd been planning to do - all pretty like as Kai said. It took an awful lot of hairpins to hold up her hair, and you'd be surprised at how sharp those little things are. But at the time, everyone was so focused on the tools of the Seamstress that no one bothered to consider the tools of the Handmaiden." The piercing gaze of the man held Mordrid's, and it was clear she was struggling to look back at him. Finally she spoke with a frown.
"She should have been mine, not yours. I only wanted to save her fro-" The Baron held up a hand, looking at the wide eyed twins beside the revealed Handmaiden.
"Mai, Kai. Escort Mordrid from these premises." The blonde woman shook her head, even as the duo moved to take her by the arms.
"We were the same, you and I. I did it for love. Don't you see that? I did it for her." Smooglenuff sighed and leaned on his cane.
"You and I were never the same Mordrid. Not then, and not now." As the ex-handmaiden was escorted from the room and the doors shut, Baron Von Smooglenuff turned to face his guests with an almost sheepish smile.
"Apologies to you all. I'm afraid I used you to solve a crime that has haunted me for far to long. It must seem odd that I've kept Mordrid in my employ for all this time, but as I've learned, keep your friends close and your enemies even closer." Taking a deep breath, he nodded to Kura
"If only the military had been as skilled as you so long ago, at least one innocent women would have lived a long uneventful life." Tapping his cane on the floor with a smile, the Lord glanced at them all.
"As all of you have helped to reveal the true killer in some way, when the twins return you will all get to pick a prize. Kura, you will choose first. Then Faith, Tio, Padraig and then Mero. In the meanwhile, please feel free to chat. They shouldn't be long. After you have chosen, you will be free to stay and chat, or you may choose to explore the house, or just go to your room. My home is your home for tonight." As they waited, the waitstaff returned to clear the table and give those who wanted it one last refill. The Baron found his perch by the window, smiling and happy to answer questions should anyone ask them. When the twins returned, they both carried velvet lined silver trays. On the trays were a number of items
- A very old tome, bound in leather and silver filigree decoration on the corners. The title was embossed with silver as Eat Me
- A curiously simple looking pewter ring that if not looked directly at, seemed to completely disappear from view.
- A collection of strange liquids in small glass bottles that appeared to shift of their own accord.
- An intricate Mastercraft longbow carved with filigree and stained a deep indigo.
- A little music box, painted to look like the ocean. When opened there was a small ship inside that rocked gently in time to a beautiful soft song.
