[Scalvoris Town/The Tower] Home is Where You Hang Your Hat

“Ah—met Cassion!” Pash grinned, perhaps more passionate and interested in meeting Immortals in person now that he’d done so himself, the memory of Zanik’s alluring presence and the feeling of his song still so fresh and vibrant in his mind, ”Well, I’m sure that was nothin’ short o’ interestin’.”

His tide pool gaze shifted to the hat, curious. It seemed fitting enough, like the Immortal of Music’s own hands on his lute.

The seafaring minstrel didn’t mind if everyone else ate while he played and he said so. He could wait, he said, getting comfortable in a way that found his lute in his lap and his body just close enough to the dark-haired Sev’ryn that a knee brushed her own. He strummed a few chords and hummed a bit, warming up, considering the story he’d be telling in the form of song,

“It’s gonna be in Rakahi, mind y’ both.” He didn’t apologize so much as admit, unable to entirely translate the song on the fly like he had for other songs with Baya a few ten-trials ago. Some songs were just so much a part of the language he knew more intimately that it felt impossible to put them into another tongue, but hopefully the melody he played on his lute and the sounds of his baritone singing would convey the story and the ideas in a way that their hearts could understand if their minds could not,“But th’ gist be that the Small Boat, the Ipi’ufnajot, was once a real boat an’ th’ sailor, a woman, be in th’ sky because Xuir an’ U’Frek couldn’t share her love. But, at th’ end o’ each hot cycle, her constellation there—“ Pash pointed toward the western horizon, ”Touches th’ sea before th’ twin suns o’ Saun rise an’ she spends all o’ Saun on th’ sea b’fore returnin’ t’ th’ sky an’ th’ stars again. Anyway, that’s a lil’ summary t’ think ‘bout while I sing.”

Pash then sang the song in Rakahi with his baritone voice, which was perhaps more like a ballad. The music was a journey all its own, now clearly aided by the way he could play to the chords of emotions of all who heard him because of Zanik’s mark and his Empathy spark working together in such a way as to truly take the hearts of his listeners along with him for the entire tale. He couldn’t make anyone see, but he could make anyone feel, the need for translation somewhat blurred by the fire, the three of them together, especially after his brief explanation. It was winding and full of a few musical twists that obviously corresponded to the plot between U’Frek and Xuir, who were still friends and yet clearly a bit tense over the Biqaj woman who found herself caught up in the tale, caught up in the night sky as a collection of bright stars. The story-song wasn’t short by any means, and when he was finished, the last notes lost in the crackle of the fire, he placed his hands on the strings to bring silence and smiled,

“I’ve got a few more if y’ want them.” He teased, willing to play until the stars faded for the last time pretty much always, so long as the company made it worth while,“Unless someone else’s got a story t’share.”

The seafaring minstrel would help himself to the food and praise it warmly, for no matter how spoiled he’d become by Cally’s fancy meals, nothing compared to fireside food with excellent company. Arlo was clearly an excellent cook and an honor to the Immortal who’d gifted him his hat. Surely, Cassion kept an eye on the young man, mark or not,

“I’ve never been t’ Desnind. I s’pose I’ll have t’ visit, eh?” His question was clearly for Kali’rial, the grin on his face an endearing one between bites of dessert—delicious, delicious dessert, “In all m’ sailin’, I’ve never made ’t that far south. Though, from here, that’s a long sail. Well over a season, ‘m sure. Rharne I’ve been to, but I’ve no’ been back in … well, ‘bout five arcs or so.”

He’d never gone back, not since he left. Perhaps he should one day, just to leave old hurts and cargo behind once and for all.

Pash would happily play more music or listen to a story, not in a hurry to head home so much as content to be in comfortable company. Was he homesick? It's been a little over an arc since he'd last been home, almost two now. Sometimes. He missed his family. He missed his friends. He was a social creature and while traveling had become his life, he still found himself wondering about his mother, his siblings, his cousins.

Because of his Competency in Empathy magic, Pash exudes an aura of calm emotion that is always "on." While it's not strong enough to overcome extreme emotions and it also loses strength the more people he's around, it's still up to you how that affects your character in whatever situation we're in. PM with questions!

Kali glanced at Arlo's hat, a curious smile on her face at his mention of Cassion being the reason for it. All these Immortal's and their gifts. Pash with his lute, Arlo with his hat...the brunette huntress felt slightly out of place with her unblessed self. Nodding as the younger man mentioned this being the last night for a while, the Sev'ryn glanced up at the shimmering stars. Something about them made her feel safe, familiar. They were the silent guardians of the night sky that lead weary travellers to their destinations. A traveling merchants constant companion. Saun, in all its blazing glory, was not a welcome season for Kali'rial.

Glancing back down at Arlo, the southerner smiled again, if not a little wryly.

"It's less of a tradition and more of a requirement, our familiars." She said with a shrug, before chuckling at his comment about the flunnies. Leaning forward, she took a small amount of food with a grateful nod, before sitting back to listen to the Biqaj bard play. He would sing in his native tongue, something that the huntress would never get sick of. She could pick up a word here or there, but was not skilled enough to know everything that was sung, sufficing to use his common spoken explanation about the melody. It was a beautiful concept, one that made her smile as she watched his hands move on the strings.

The warmth of the feeling in the song washed over her, along with the cup'o'tea sensation the seafaring minstrel managed to create wherever he went, a combination that was perfect with the current activity and company. When it was over, the Sev'ryn couldn't hold back a small yawn, the relaxed state she was in getting the better of her. At mention of visiting Desnind, she chuckled and glanced at the fire with another shrug.

"I'm probably a bit bias but it's a pretty nice place to visit. Provided you don't mind the bugs or the wildlife." Kali nudged him playfully with her knee, before her smile faded a little as he mentioned his time away from home.

"Maybe it's worth a visit to more places than just Desnind." She said softly, before turning her blue eyes on the traveller with a warm smile.

"Thank you for sharing your fire and your meal with us Arlo. I might be a hunter, but I am not a cook. You appear to be both. Truly... The huntress indulged in a small bit of dessert before making a face of delight and pointing at the rest with a smile.

"Incredible." Sitting back she yawned again, covering her mouth with her hand and looking apologetically at the two men. Good food, good music, crackling firelight and a little magical area calming effect...it was easy to find herself ready for sleep even if the sky had only darkened a short while ago.

"I did," Arlo confirmed, referring to that time, not so long ago, that he'd shared a fire, a drink, and swapped stories with the Immortal Cassion himself. "Though I never called him by name, at least not until he chose to reveal it himself at the end. It's said that he likes the anonymity of the road, of being just another of those he mixes and travels with. He told me," the young man added as he picked up his plate, "Later, that next time we met I should have a good story for him, one better than he'd have to tell, and I'd be rewarded for it." Of course Arlo didn't expect it. The experience itself would be reward enough. Still, he grinned and shrugged. "Sharing a meal though ought be expected, so I've been working a little on my cooking skills too. Thank you," he said when Kali'rial complimented the sweets. "My mother is a terrible cook but she does a few things well. It was there that taught me that one."

He knew a little Rakahi, he added when Pash revealed the nature of the song he'd sing. "But only a little. A friend, my traveling companion for the past few seasons...My sister you could say. She taught me a word here, a broken phrase there." Whichever the case, the tune was a good one, and the man's voice was better. Arlo could tell a story, fiction mixed with fact in just the right measure to capture the imagination. With some though, truth was more than enough and in fact, sometimes stranger than the wildest exaggerations. "There's a ruined fortress, or temple deep in the woods outside of Ne'haer," he told them. "It's called Seraas en Avellach, or Mindrender. They say that in those woods, ghostly screams cut through the night, made more frightening by the sounds of children's laughter. That's not the worst of the forest."

"And that pales too, next to what's inside that temple," he added with a grin while he picked up their plates once they were emptied. "It's not forbidden to enter Mindrender but it's not advised by the locals. Grown, seasoned warriors wet themselves, it's told, just stepping inside the archway. I ignored that advice of course and so did my traveling companion and what we found inside is worse by far than ghosts and touched children." Whatever it was, your worst nightmares and terrors, he added...each and every person that entered, that's what they'd find inside. "And on that cheery note," he added with a laugh and hands to his knees to push himself onto his feet. "I'm off to bed under the stars, while there are still stars to see. You're welcome to stay the night if you'd rather not walk home in the dark."

It was Arlo's way, and commanded by the Immortal he followed, what he had, he shared. The ground wasn't cold but it was hard and in the back of his cart, they'd find hides and furs to lay on and blankets to keep the slight chill off, or to roll up and serve as a pillow. And if they stayed through the night, then at dawn they'd find bowls of oat and barley porridge by the fire with honey and berries, to keep them on their way back to town.
