[Sweetwine Woods] Into The Woods We Go (Hunting Party)

38th Ymiden, Early Morning, 717 (note - due to travel time participants will need to be free from 37th morning to 39th afternoon.)

The early morning sky was clear of cloud cover and a painted pale blue that promised of a bright sunny day as the sun slowly broke the horizon. If the weather held - and all indications showed it would - the day would be a warm one that cooled down towards evening. Today was a perfect day for a hunt, to prepare for the Hunters Moon feast due in three trials. It was tradition that only that which had been hunted or grown in the three trials before is eaten in the feast, a large affair in the middle of Scalvoris Town.

Kali had heard about the traditional event, and it had greatly perked her interests. Whilst the animals they hunted may not benefit her from a hide perspective, the prospect of a good group hunt had the woman's string fingers twitching. The word of mouth was that a troupe would be heading into Sweetwine Woods, named as such for its over populace of Sweetwine Vines and a day's travel from the township. The woods were rumoured to be rich for hunting and gathering, and particularly beautiful at this time of year with the blooming of various flowers and such. It sounded like exactly what the Sev'ryn huntress needed after the harrowing events just under two ten-trials past.

Besides, social events in Scalvoris so far had proved a rather wonderful and enlightening experience.

Those who had volunteered for the hunt had gathered just outside of Scalvoris Town gates on the morning of the 37th, horses and wagons welcome to both carry people and supplies to the woods and possible kills back to town. A large burly woodsman by the nickname "Bear" had been called out as their guide, a befitting name for the bald and beaded human with arms like tree trunks. His daughter Talilah accompanied them, a scrappy little thing in comparison to her father, ten arcs old and having a wild mane of fiery hair and freckles.

Kali brought her sturdy chestnut mount, riding him easily at pace with the group, her sleeping roll tied to the saddle over his rump. The travel between town and the woods providing a good chance for people to chat amongst themselves. According to Talilah (who had heard from their friends cousin, who heard from their friend, who was courting the bartender who's best patron swore on his mothers grave one night after a few Mint Cocoa Dirts), the woods were home to a small family of Stagrein. Kali held very little faith in this 'insider knowledge', but humoured the girl with questions about the beasts and whether they were fair game. When the group made camp, the brunette stayed close to familiar faces as they sat around the campfires making plans for approach and suggested entry points. The woods held plenty of animal tracks and trails, leading in from the sparse outter edge and getting thicker as it led to the river the woods expanded from. If anything, at least they could go fishing if they had no luck with the beasts.

The group had made camp only a quarter break away from the woods entrance, and so in the very wee breaks of the 38th morning, those participating in the hunt left with their required possessions and made way to the edge of the woods with Bear and Talilah leading on their horse drawn wagon, watching the sky change from a deep starry indigo to a periwinkle blue as the sun began to rise. A slight morning fog hung around the woods, something that would burn off by around midday. The Sev'ryn huntress had worn her hunting attire, a short sleeveless linen tunic dress with a built in hood that sat loosely around the arms and v-neck front to allow for freedom of movement. The edges were embroidered with a green geometric triangle pattern and the lower half finished with a hafrein fur trim. On her legs she wore thin dark leather breeches, and her black armguards. Around her waist was a black woven leather belt that held her her water skin and toolbag. Her hunting knife was holstered to her upper thigh with a leather garter style holder and her quiver strapped on her back held twelve short bow arrows. The young woman had pulled her black tresses into a tight braid and held her bow loosely in one hand as she stood by the woods, looking around for tracks on the ground and telltale signs of animal entry points.

"So, for any of you who've not been through the woods before, listen up." Bear addressed them in a deep quiet rumble.

"We got loads of Sweetwine Vine in this place, and whilst it won't kill you as such, I don't recommend eating the stuff." Looking at Talilah, he ruffled the girls already ruffled hair with a grin.

"Tal here will be coming with you, and if you manage to bring something down, she'll scoot out faster than shi..mud off a shiny shovel to get me, so you don't have to drag the basta...beast back to camp." Brandishing a huge woodcutters axe over his shoulder, Bear nodded to the group as though to say 'you point the way'.

Kali turned to the group, having been looking at the edge of the woods as Bear spoke. She pointed with her bow at two well worn game trails.

"We can enter through the left path, or the right. This one," She pointed to the right. "Appears to be more commonly used. I would probably suggest it is the better path for us." Turning blue eyes back to the group, she waited for the others to vote their choice.

Get on a horse, she’d said.

It would be fine, she’d said.

It was not.

Pash was fairly convinced that Kali had charmed him into this whole hunting trip idea while his clothes were off, sweet lips and quiet words when he was most likely to say yes to anything. She’d visited him doing his work, so he just had decided it was only fair he saw the lithe huntress at her other best. Although, hunting involved a lot more than playing his lute for dinner patrons, and had he bothered to ever think things through, he probably would have at least not acquiesced to riding on the back of a horse. They were large, unpredictable creatures that moved nothing like a ship at sea. Well, maybe they were predictable to folks who were used to them. For the Biqaj, they were fur-covered, hoofed mysteries. If he rode with a tighter grip than seemed fitting of his usual bravado, fingers curled more in self-protection than affection into the Sev’ryn’s hips while he shared her ride, so be it. A little tarnished pride wasn’t going to lose him any points he couldn’t win back later, was it?

He dressed much as he had for all of his recent out-of-town excursions as of late—from the Immortal’s Tongue to the jungle—though he owned no distance weapons to hunt with other than his voice, if that counted. He had his tamo daggers and his wit, remembered to bring his cloak, and while he’d left his lute behind, he did bring along his new musical toy, a small Eligrun harmonika that tucked nicely into his rucksack. One never knew when music was necessary, though if anyone had asked Pash’s opinion, he would have said always.

Used to family banter, nieces and nephews and cousins, their guides made Pash extremely comfortable, although, admittedly, so did being with people he knew and enjoyed the company of. While he would readily admit he grew up in a city but lived on the sea, he was also forced to face the fact that he knew little of forests or tracking, especially at the unseemly hour they were required to be up and moving. He was sure that there were dangerous things in the forest—where in Scalvoris had there not been danger yet, anyway?—and he listened intently to Bear’s warnings.

Fishing seemed way less complicated.

While the tall Biqaj was romantically inclined to prefer the road less traveled as a creative creature, he chose not to attempt to make the argument for either game path since he was sure his opinion wasn't educated enough to be important. Besides, when he squinted his lagoon blue eyes at the two trails Kali pointed out, he couldn’t really see much of a difference, anyway. Currents and star courses he knew, but the marks left behind by animals, he did not.

”Whiche’er seems best,” Pash smiled, curious and yet still clearly uncomfortable around horses in a way that probably could have been comical, which made his usual humor somewhat subdued, ”though wouldn’t well traveled also mean well-eaten, if y’know what I mean?”

Because of his Competency in Empathy magic, Pash exudes an aura of calm emotion that is always "on." While it's not strong enough to overcome extreme emotions and it also loses strength the more people he's around, it's still up to you how that affects your character in whatever situation we're in. [Sweetwine Woods] Into The Woods We Go (Hunting Party)

Baya hadn’t volunteered for the hunt. Baya had seen a horse, a huge horse and had clambered atop as the carts had loaded and simply decided she would go with the big ones and ride a horse because she had never had before. The first day she clung to its legs, tail and mane. She found the hard way that none of those were a good position to ride from. When she finally perched atop its head she found it would not be the mount for her. She needed smaller not something so big, not made so large that it could even dwarf the big ones. But the view was fascination. So fascinating she chattered nearly straight through to the morning until their hunt truly began.

“I’ve never been on a horse! Its so big! Its bigger than you!” The Tunawa told their guide informatively if not repetitively from her current spot atop his horse. If her chatter bothered him he didn’t show it or if he did Baya didn’t care because right up until the very moment he address the group her flow of speech was ceaseless.

Baya stared at the two paths. The left one sounded like it would be more fun, more recognizable with its less trodden path but this was not her woods. It didn’t seem to be the big ones woods either. These were no ones woods. It was a strange concept and stranger still that she hadn’t heard much of an echo back when she spoke, not even from the big ones…

Oh!

“Way!” Baya said, checking their faces to make sure she was speaking Common this time, stood on the horses head then pointed with a little jump to the left. “Way food, get food. We go.”

As if it had been decided on her words alone Baya crossed her legs and sat down on the head of the horse and once more began to praise the horse in Tree Talk.

[Sweetwine Woods] Into The Woods We Go (Hunting Party)

Sweetwine Woods
They took the path on the right, those of them who went that trial, and it was indeed the path more worn, more trod and more.. usual. The Sweetwine Woods was beautiful at this time of the arc and they made their way accompanied by birdsong and beauty. One of the things about the Sweetwine Woods was that it was a treat for the senses. Birdsong was accompanied by a cacophony of colours, vivid plants and flowers. There was an aroma to this place, too, which was unlike anywhere else. Sweet and pleasant, it had the scent of fresh grass and the forest floor.

It was, in short, beautiful.

There were a number of paths which the hunting party could follow and that, fundamentally, was where decisions would need to be made. "Righteo!" Bear said with a cheery smile. "We've got a spot of walkin' to do afore we end up 'aving to make choices, so why don't we tell stories an' tales, speaking of who we are, our skills an' all that?" He smiled around in a gruff and yet friendly fashion. "Places like this, need t'be able to depend on each other, af'er all."

As they walked, Talilah pointed out plants and fungus growing. Especially those things which were unique to Scalvoris. She explained medicinal uses, culinary uses, that kind of thing. It seemed like the young woman knew an awful lot about such things.

"So!" Bear said with more of an exclamation than he perhaps meant. "What sort of thing are we hopin' for in this hunt?"

Kali grinned at Pash, knowing full well he was not at all in his comfort zone when it came to horses or hunting. The Biqaj had agreed to come along on the hunt which had delighted the Sev'ryn a great deal...albeit it may have been asked at a time where he would have agreed to probably just about anything. Still, to have the sunkissed sailor riding along with her had been enjoyable, even if it was due to the not-so-romantic grip he'd maintained on her hips whilst her chestnut moved along.

"Well eaten? Maybe? At least we'd be sure of bringing down something well fed?" The young huntress said seriously, even if a small smirk came to the corner of her mouth.

Standing she glanced over at the horse that Bear had ridden with a small laugh of delighted surprise. A Tunawa had managed to make the journey with them and was now proclaiming in common the path she choose.

"Well hello there! I don't think I've hunted with a Tuwana before." If the tree person would accept her offer, Kali would tap her shoulder to indicate the little green creature was welcome to hitch a ride. As the group moved along the right path, the brunette looked around at the woods that surrounded them. It was beautiful, a rich cacophony of sounds, sights and smells that reminded the huntress of home. She kept an eye out for any signs of prey they could begin to follow, a small unconscious smile on her face. Something about being in the woods, hunting, made her feel happily at home.

"My name is Kali'rial, and I am a Sev'ryn. I travelled to Scalvoris last season from Desnind, following the trade routes. My grandparents were hide traders, so I've been up and down that route for arcs." Turning to Bear, she nodded to his daughter.

"Your girl there is exceptionally knowledgeable." Pointing to the path they followed, the brunette paused to examine the leaves along the way and the tracks in the deciduous debris.

"I have some skill in tracking, not as much as yourself I'd assume. I can also bring down game with my short now, or my hunting knife. Skinning, I can do that." Glancing at Talilah, Kali smiled.

"What I'm not so good at is medicines and cooking, but I guess you have that covered." As they walked the Sev'ryn felt the ground with unshod feet, enjoying the damp coolness of the undergrowth on bare skin. Bears sudden exclamation caught her off guard and she jumped slightly, mildly wondering with amusement how anyone so loud ever caught game.

"Hoping to bring something back for the Hunters Moon festival on the 40th trial. I've found Scalvoris to be a place that has opened my eyes to a lot of new experiences." Her periwinkle gaze shifted to Pash for a moment, before turning back to the muscular woodsman. "And I feel like something is owed to its people for that. When I heard about the hunt, how could I resist?"

[Sweetwine Woods] Into The Woods We Go (Hunting Party)

Baya smiled, pleased to be noticed more. Sometimes big ones were bad with their eyes, in fact, her current ride had almost stepped on her twice and nearly sat on her. Accepting of the offer she eyes the distance between the two horses, she could have asked for help but it seemed much simpler to launch her small body across the space. As they were barely moving she landed with minimal trouble, though she got a face full of horse hair then scrambled up the big one, Kali’rial. Baya perched herself comfortably on her shoulder, her small fingers wound in the big ones hair as a grip.

From her perch she had a much better view of the plants their big ones daughter was showing them. Some were familiar, common fungi that probably grew everywhere. The ones that fascinated Baya were the new ones. Ones with names like ‘Dragon Tree’, and ‘Steppers’ that apparently tasted like lemons, which Baya had never eaten. Even stranger things called ‘Isomnus’, the girl said, was for sleep and ‘Snekvines' that Baya found herself wanting to touch to see if they were real, and maybe to eat them. They looked tasty. When she realized Kali’rial had finished speaking Baya stood up and spoke as loudly as she could to the group, “Am Baya. No know hunting at all. Want ride horse, rided horse. Now ride big one and am hunting.”

This was all spoken with great pride as Baya took in their surroundings, they may not be her woods but with all the new things and sights, they were pretty woods. The deeper they seemed to go the more at home she felt, especially as over their own talk the echoes of bird calls sang around them, and the big one telling them just about everything about the woods. Every tree she spotted was the prefect home and it took the big ones talking to bring her back to the present and continue her little introduction.

“Am wanting know what festival? What for? What hunt? Is fun? Am no knowing hunting, am knowing herbs.” The Tunawa tapped her head, “Am good when slithers and bugs bite big ones, grow plant, you is eating, no more sick.”

As much as Pash was uncomfortable around horses and out of his element in a forest, he couldn’t help but be fascinated by the Sweetwine woods. The sights and scents were indeed very interesting, but for the seafaring musician, the sounds captured his attention more than anything else. Slowly, his hands relaxed, and he carefully allowed himself to become absorbed in what was going on in the forest. Mostly, he listened, the birdsong and various unusual sounds of the living forest that were so unfamiliar to him fascinating to his musical ears.

He was so absorbed in listening, learning, that the tiny shout of a Tunawa surprised him, jolting him back to attention, lagoon blue eyes slowly coming back into focus on the little creature on Bear’s horse with a smile. It wasn’t Niv. Where had the creature come from?

Kali invited it over, the Tunawa leaping between the two horses and settling on the dark-haired Sev’ryn’s shoulder. This arrangement placed Baya nearly in front of Pash's face since he was sharing the ride as well, though he was noticeably taller than the huntress and could instead look down at the Tunawa just a little. He offered Baya a smile, looking over to answer Bear’s questions with a noticeable tone of chagrin in his voice, feeling out of place far from the sea and chasing down animals for food,

“Don’ worry, Baya, I’m no’ a hunter at all, either, I’m afraid. My name’s Pash, by th’ way. I came t’ see what it’s all about, I guess, an’ because Kali said it would be a good time. I’m a musician, mostly, so m' skills aren't really at all related t' huntin,' I'm afraid t' admit—”

Pash didn’t feel it necessary to describe his skills as an Empath or go into detail about how he could sail a boat. They weren’t terribly useful at the moment, as far as he could tell. He was handy enough with a dagger, but he wasn’t about to chase down their prey. The use of hunting weapons was definitely in Kali’rial’s current for the trial,

“—though I’ve got a few other tricks up m’ sleeve when they’re needed. I jus’ don’ think they’ll matter out here in th’ forest much. Sorry, Bear, we’re a strange bunch t’ be huntin’ with, it seems.”

He laughed, hoping that this would be a simple and educational hunting excursion, one that wouldn’t get out of hand. Their guides seemed skilled and Kali’rial at least knew what she was doing, which meant it was mostly his job to stay out of the way whenever possible and not make too much noise that would scare away their prey, no matter how noisy the forest already was.

Baya’s mention of growing plants may or may not have hit a little close to home, Pash’s smile fading a little and his gaze shifting away from the small creature and back to watching the forest. He fell quiet for a few moments, swallowing his discomfort at recent memories such words dredged up from the silty bottom of his thoughts, fingers curling just a little tighter into Kali’s sides for a bit or two,

“Th’ festival’s tomorrow—th’ Hunter’s Moon—an’ were’ here to catch an animal ‘r two for th’ supper everyone will be sharin’ in Scalvoris as part o’ th’ celebration. M’haps y’ can find some herbs for cookin’ while we’re out here together?”

[Sweetwine Woods] Into The Woods We Go (Hunting Party)

Image
Sweetwine Woods
Herbs were plentiful in Sweetwine Woods. The Sweetwine Vine which it was named after was just one of the many plants which grew here. In typical Scalvoris fashion, it was a strange and quirky little place, unique and apparently separate from the rest of the area around it. Lots of different places, each one in their own little bubble of existence and somehow smooshing together.

Or, it was just an island in the back end of nowhere. It really rather depended on your point of view.

Bear listened to what they said and his face lit in a grin when Pash said he was a musician. "Excellent! On our way back, when we're not so worried about noise," if he was worried about noise now, he had a funny way of showing it, "maybe you'll teach us a song and aye!" The last was almost shouted, again. "She's the cleverest girl this side of that side." He chuckled and beamed at Kali. Talilah blushed, shaking her head and ignoring her father in a very well practiced way.

As they walked, there were plenty of plants and herbs for picking, fruits hanging from trees and berries growing on bushes. Bear, however, quietened and motioned for any of them who wanted to, that they should come forward. "These tracks, here?" He pointed to some tracks, which looked like rabbit tracks, but were present only for a few foot, then disappeared. "That's a flunny. You seen those? Flying bunny, basically."

Talilah nodded and looked at Kali with delight in her eyes, "They're so cute!" Bear chuckled.

"Nice in a stew too, and unusual pelt. Not a big prey, but if you're interested, we can have a look. Judging by the direction of the toes, it's flying that way"

Just then, a whole flock of birds took off at once from the opposite direction of the flunny, all taking flight at once and in a way which was so sudden that it was almost certain that they were disturbed or frightened. Bear sighed. "Or we could go look at what did that."

Hmmm. Cute, flying bunny of cuteness or thing that scares flocks of birds for a living?

[Sweetwine Woods] Into The Woods We Go (Hunting Party)

Image
As the Tunawa jumped over and perched on her shoulder Kali grinned, listening carefully with interest as Baya introduced herself and surprisingly her ability to grow healing flowers. Whilst not a hunter as such, the tree talker was a valuable addition to the hunt as a possible healer. Or healing resource. Either way, a Baya flower a day kept the doctor away it seemed.

Chuckling at the Biqaj's commentary, the brunette couldn't help but feel a little twinge of delight at his words. This hunt was quite literally the complete opposite of anything the sunkissed sailor was equipped to be on, yet he'd come along anyway. For her, or to be with her? The huntress wasn't entirely sure of the exact reason, but she was glad he had. Nodding as he explained the Hunters Moon, Kali picked up the thread of conversation.

"According to the folk in town, the Hunters Moon is one big harvest celebration on the fortieth trial in the centre of town. The moon appears huge and red, and only foods hunted or gathered in the three trials prior is consumed." As Bear replied to Pash, the Sev'ryn winced at the boom of his voice, wondering how anything would still stick around after that. Glancing at Talilah who blushed under her fathers praise, Kali shot the young girl a grin. The duo was a pleasure to be with, regardless of the woodsmans inability to speak softly (or so it seemed.) As they moved past the fruits of the forest, the brunette huntress ignored them, focusing on the red haired man as he suddenly became more focused. This was what she knew, what was familiar. Moving to come close to him, she glanced and the flunny tracks he'd indicated, noticing how they simply up and disappeared where the creature had taken flight. Looking at the young girl again, Kali chuckled at her delightful exclamation.

"Aren't they just? I saw one in flight a ten trial ago or so. Almost a shame to hunt them." She said quietly, before turning back to the sound of birds taking flight a flurry of wings. It was obvious that something had scared them, and as Bear game them the option of fluffy little flying balls of fur or something possibly much more dangerous and large, it was impossible to hide the gleam in the huntress' eye.

"Whatever that was, it could be a brilliant contribution for the festival. Plus, flunnies I've heard are exceptionally hard to catch. All fluttery and fast. I vote it would be easier to go after the latter, maybe larger target." The young woman spoke matter of factly, casually thumbing the string of her bow as she looked between the curiously assorted members of the group, meanwhile her heart had sped up a fraction with excitement and anticipation of a good hunt.

"Of course, I am happy to chase flunnies if everyone else prefers the former." It was a genuine sentiment, for as much as Kali would love to take after the bird-scarring creature, she was well aware that none of the others were hunters by trade. No matter what path they took, the day and journey would be worth it.

[Sweetwine Woods] Into The Woods We Go (Hunting Party)

Baya stared curiously at the male big one. No one was really a hunter it seemed, except Kali, a strange group of adventurers they were but considering what the festival was for it made sense if everyone pitched in. She was pleased she had went because she’d be able to say she helped. Even if she wasn’t looking foreword to the actual meat. It’d be better if they had some crunchy spiders but bigs ones had this weird idea that all bus tasted gross but they’d probably never had one marinated in cocoa or coconut water.

“Yes! Am getting herbs, snacks! Oh! Should test, can eat poison plants, good tests. New plants here.” Baya said, delighted at Pash's suggestion as it suited her ideas of fun, “Flunny? Is sounding cute, be sad to eat. Am not fast to chase but can throw. Big ones throw and can land good, hold still things…”

The birds flew and Baya craned her neck up with a crack, words trailed off and eyes wide. That sound was almost like a warning cry of her own but rather than pure fear there was the rush of butterflies in her stomach. Full of adrenaline and very ready to to at least see what caused that reaction. Her gaze fell to the bushes, as if from this distance she could see anything useful from the distance. Then her eyes narrowed in thought, Tunawa liked to play tricks on big ones. They stomped so loud through the forests, so rude, so..so big. Baya had often joined in rustling up bushes and scaring of smaller critters to spook big ones away, laughing with the others as the fled. There were no Tunawa there as far as she knew but…

“Want go that way!” She said in excited then only slightly more somber, “But what if nothing? Just scaredy birds? Then we get nothings…no knowing what better.”

Baya griped Kalis shirt as she sat, though probably not for long. It was too hard to keep still, she needed to be able to reach things and touch and eat some snacks now that she'd thought about it earlier and, oh! She smiled brightly at Pash then at Kali, “Can you be getting some plants for Baya? Give small bits?”

She could take them home and try to learn about these new plants here, maybe even see if some would grow in her garden!
