The Grand Hunt

7th of Vhalar, 717.

The Sweetvine Woods. Everyone seemed to talk about the place like it was the holy grail of hunting grounds and after so much talk, he really couldn't pass up the opportunity to at least give it a visit while he was hanging around. From Scalvoris Town, it would have been an entire day to walk, but from Traveller's back he could cover the same distance in three breaks. For now, Jasper was left with the rest of his belongings at Cally's, a nice fat trout to keep him placated and a fairly warm blanket for him to cuddle into in case they were held up. He'd brought not only all his hunting gear with him, but whatever supplies he could pick up to last a full day out in the wilderness, including a bedroll strapped to Traveller's back. If the hunting was as good as they said, he intended to camp there overnight and start hunting fresh in the morning. Heck, he wished he had more mounts at this point! With any luck, Traveller would struggle to haul back all the prey they'd catch in just one flight!

The moment they landed and Nir'wei dismounted, Greyhide materialised. "Don't get so cocky," he chuckled. "It'll kill you." He waved off the warnings with a dismissive gesture. He'd heard some pretty scary stories about dangerous creatures lurking all over Scalvoris, but the truth was, those things were all so rare that he highly doubted he'd just walk across their path in the middle of a casual hunting venture... and if he did, well, at that point there'd be nothing he could do about it. Some people were unlucky enough to be caught at the wrong place at the wrong time, and if that happened to him, all the humble pie in the world wouldn't make a lick of difference.

In the end, he just rolled his eyes as he drew his bow and quiver from the loop in the side of Traveller's saddle. "Why don't you do something useful like start searching the area for scent trails or other markings? Anything that's been here a week ago, I want to know about it." He wished that he had more than just one wolf out searching, but for all the talk of the rich ecosystem of the Sweetvine Woods, for some reason he doubted there'd be any wolves roaming. He would have heard their howls at night, Greyhide would have found traces of them by now, and besides, there were plenty of other pack animals rife through these parts. Screeching Hounds and such. Hopefully he wouldn't stumble across any of them - a lone creature wasn't a problem, especially since he knew he could focus it down with sheer force of will, but packs worked differently... he'd have to find the alpha and focus that one specifically to get the others to back down.

Instead of throwing the quiver of arrows over his shoulder, he tightened it around his waist, keeping the arrowshafts poking out from his right hip. He didn't know why some people decided to wear it from such an awkward angle - he supposed they were moving around so often that holding it upright was the only way to stop the arrows from tumbling everywhere - but for him, just keeping the quiver at a slight incline was enough to push the arrows into place, and keeping the arrows close to his lower back instead of his shoulder meant they were easier to grab, since moving his arm down to his side was a more natural position than craning it back over his shoulder in an awkward pose. Just as he'd finished, Greyhide's head shot up. "I've got something." He looked at the wolf questioningly. "I don't know what it is. Smells like deer, but..."

He was about to say Hafrein, but the wolf interjected, already aware of his suspicions through their mental connection. "No. I've smelled Hafrein before. This is something different. It's like deer, but it's definitely not. There's something... really different about it. It's like trying to compare a shark to a starfish." Now that really was a find. "The trail is spotty, but it leads into the woods, over here."

Greyhide led the way, leaving Traveller curled up on the outer fringe of the woods, forging a path through the undergrowth and following the faint traces of scent. Just knowing about something as vague as what species they could be following made it exponentially easier to notice signs of their presence as they drew closer. Droppings, small and round, undoubtedly made from a herbivore. Prints on the ground, lightly sunken into the undergrowth and in the shape of hooves. They can't have gone far for the prints to still be around, the last rains had come and gone just a few trials ago and surely would have washed them away, even with the thick canopy overhead to protect it. Prints overlapped often, but he could make out roughly three or four of the animals total with one, two at most being significantly larger and deeper than the others, suggesting adults or adult males, and then females or younger children. On one occasion the trees showed signs of scraping, with a good deal of bark loosed and ripped off in long strips. If he didn't know they were hunting something that likely had antlers, he would have chalked it off as something like a bear scratching itself.

A sudden snuffling to their left made the pair stop dead in their tracks. Nir'wei drew an arrow, strung it to the bow and drew it back on instinct, but he didn't have a clear shot - the trees here were clustered fairly tightly together, with vegetation thick and rising nearly as high as his waist. Another loud snuffle and he rose the bow, but he could still only vaguely tell where they might have been. It didn't sound like it knew where he was, and the moment he made the first shot, he revealed his location and scared whatever it was into either running or attacking, neither of which he wanted. He quested through the bond, but Greyhide was as oblivious as him; they couldn't even sneak through to find the origin with dense foliage surrounding them. Even moving as slowly and quietly as they could, they'd create too much rustling.

If there was a better time to pray, now was it. "Karem, guide my arrow to my prey, in this time of need let my arrows strike true and my teeth sink deep, as I hunt in your name and carry the will to survive against all trials and tests." As quietly as he could, he begun walking in the direction of the snuffling. His eyes watched everywhere; if this creature was something like a boar or a pig, they'd easily sink under the dense underbrush and he'd never notice it until he stepped on it. Larger creatures bent down to graze could pop up at a moment... and predator or prey, he needed to be ready to strike hard and deep the moment something revealed itself. He would make the first and only strike, quick as a viper, strong as a bear, skillful as Karem herself...

His hip brushed against a bush, rustling it gently. Several metres away an antlered head reared and instantly spotted him, his head still bobbing gently above the underbrush. It looked very much like a deer, but even from a glance it was shorter and stockier. Its rack had been sharpened to neat points all folded forward and up, much sharper than they normally would have been. That wasn't the only deviation though. Normal deer would have turned tail and ran the moment they spotted anything that looked remotely like a predator... but this one...

The moment it noticed him, it screeched. High and shrill like a bat, only much louder. With its mouth open wide and the creature staring straight at him, he got the perfect view as two long, slender fangs pushed out of the top of its mouth, looking like something out of a bard's tale. Just to complete the picture, its eyes even turned visibly red - even in bright daylight they sparkled with the colour of blood. The scream was met by another, and another, and another... a head popped up to the left, and then another far to the right, nearly behind him. Gods, what the hell were these things?

The Grand Hunt

He forgot about the hunt. He forgot about the prey. He offered a new prayer to Karem, multiple prayers in fact, but these were to just make it out alive as he raised his arrow and let loose upon the first creature, aiming straight for its face, but falling just short as the arrow whizzes past its cheek and coming within mere inches of a glancing blow. It snorted, red eyes swirling, and stamped its hoof in anger. "MOVE!" Greyhide screamed as he jumped to the side. Nir'wei didn't need to be told twice - he threw himself aside just in time to avoid the lowered antlers of the strange deer as it charged head-first into the spot he'd been only moments ago, its chest heaving with exertion.

No time to waste. He rolled back up onto one knee, drew another arrow, nocked, pulled and shot straight for the deer's back while it turned. He must not have pulled back far enough, because instead of sinking deep as most arrows did, it bounced harmlessly off its flank. It should have been a solid hit, too... but he must have put much less force into it than he thought. "Hey! Stop messing around and shoot it already!" Greyhide yelled with a snarl as he rolled to his feet at the same moment and ran head-first for the strange deer, bouncing aside as it kicked a hoof for his head, and sinking his teeth deep into its left hindleg.

He reached to draw a third arrow and nearly lost his arm for the trouble as another of the strange beasts charged him from the side, screeching loud enough to leave a ringing in his ears and catching his arm with one of the razor points of its antler and ripping a gash half-way up his arm from the back of his elbow. Gritting his teeth, he settled for sucking air through his teeth in favour of a scream and channelled his anger. God damn it, this thing was going to PAY.

In catching his side, it'd thrown its head up high. Likely it'd intended to gore him and fallen just short. He'd make it pay for that. His free hand finished drawing the arrow and he pivoted while he nocked and drew, raising the bow right under its exposed throat at point-blank range. Blood splattered down his left arm, soaking his torn sleeve as the arrow dug deep into its neck, twitching and bulging as it drew another ragged breath and swayed. For a moment it looked like even that wouldn't be enough - what the hell happened had someone done to these deer? - but drawing another arrow would take too long, so in a moment of quick thinking he slammed the base of the arrow with the heel of his palm, digging it deeper still until the tip pushed back out the other side of the neck. That seemed to be enough as the beast stiffened considerably, jerked a few times, stumbled to stay on its feet... and then collapsed, twitching and convulsing.

No time for even a breather, though. Greyhide was surrounded by no less than three more of the damn things, raising up on their hind legs and trampling the wolf. "I - tried - to hold it back!" he yelled through whines and yelps. "These... these things aren't ordinary deer!" Short of being crushed, the wolf reverted back to his spirit form, right before another hoof stamped down where his head had been. With nothing left to distract them, three pairs of glowing red eyes fixed themselves on Nir'wei. He drew another arrow and lined it up as one stepped forward and lowered its head, ready for yet another charge... one that he wouldn't be able to jump aside from, with its two friends stepping forward as well.

He loosed it, and this time there could be no mistake - the arrow bounced off its hide, the arrowhead connecting solidly with its shoulder right under the antlers in what should have been a crippling shot lined up and executed, but instead it clattered to the ground without even a scratch left on the deer. These things had damn thick skin!

It started up the charge, and he didn't prepare a second shot. He turned and ducked behind a tree, weaving through the undergrowth, taking the most obstructed paths to prevent the beasts from building up a good charge. Their wide antlers would get caught in the vines and bushes if it tried to lower its head, and running would break its ankle sooner than it'd break his. He just needed to find some thickets to escape through, somewhere that he could break line of sight and slip away undetected, back to... oh. Suddenly a much better idea, and instead of looking ahead, he started looking up. All he needed was a good gap in the canopy, or failing that, at least somewhere thin.

Boy, he felt dumb. Going up against something he knew absolutely nothing about was just begging the universe to screw him with screaming deer. Running head-first into a forest of unknown beasts with just a bow. If Karem was there, she'd be screaming at him for being such an absolute idiot. Next time, he'd scout the area beforehand... he'd read in a few books, perhaps talk to a few locals to find out a little more about what he was going up against. Maybe if he was feeling extra-intelligent, he'd scout around the outer rim of the forest before diving straight through the middle, so he'd have the opportunity to make it to open field and get help from Traveller should anything unexpected pop out. Hindsight was a wonderful thing in times like these - it meant he could degrade himself constantly for failure after failure he'd made, while still sprinting at top speed from his first mistake and shitting himself while doing so.

He realised he'd been doing a lot of praying today - much more than he normally ever did - but hell, he felt compelled to make at least one more, and this one was perhaps the most sincere yet. "Karem, please let me live. Whatever happens, please let me live so I can learn from these horrible mistakes and never make them again. Just let me survive. Let me make it to tomorrow. Please. Please." She must have been hearing, because for a moment his eyes slid over something in the dense foliage to his left, and his eyes immediately locked to it. A slanting ray of light. If light could get through, that meant the canopy was weak there. He cast a glance behind him just as one of the deer found enough space for another charge.

Ducking around another tree as it barrelled past with a low bray, he turned, slammed a half-hearted kick into its flank and then broke off into a run once more. It probably wasn't enough to stun it, but as long as he kept its attention... "TRAVELLER!" He threw everything he had into his yell, and pressed two fingers to his lips to whistle as loud as he could right afterwards. They couldn't be that far from the edge of the tree line... if that Sohr Khal had decided to go for a wander now, he wasn't sure he'd be able to outrun these things for that long.

And then it was all over. Traveller's hulking frame smashed through the branches overhead, wings spread wide to stop himself short from reaching the ground entirely, hind legs grabbing the nearest tree to support himself high above. The deer skidded to a halt, but one was already directly underneath the Sohr Khal. He reached down with both hands, pressed against its back and bent forward, applying all its weight in one motion and snapping its back with an audible cracking of bone and a gurgled scream. Another charged head-first, antlers lowered to try and take a swipe at Traveller's frame, and the Sohr Khal raised itself back up into the tree, letting the deer collide with its dead friend, tumbling head-over-hooves while Traveller lowered himself once more and dropped down from the tree in a calm and controlled manner, one clawed hind-leg landing on the second deer's head and gripping it around the throat with powerful talons until its screams wheezed into silence.

Only one was left. It stamped its hooves nervously, looking from Nir'wei to the Sohr Khal and back. Even after what it'd seen, it still wanted to attack, but in the presence of a greater predator it hesitated. Traveller had no such qualms. Before the deer could reach a decision, one of Traveller's hands surged forward, grabbed it by the antlers and forced its head back while his serpentine head slid underneath, gripping its neck between powerful teeth and forcibly shaking the life from its ragged body until it fell still.

If there were any others waiting to take a shot, be they deer or any other creature, Traveller's presence quelled them; they were not disturbed again as they roamed the forest, collecting the bodies of the creatures and stacking them on Traveller's back. He'd find out exactly what they were before he did anything with them... although, for the sake of a quick test, he did string one up and fire five arrows into the carcass. All of them thudded solidly into flesh, nice and deep. A shame... though their hides would make excellent new cloaks and such regardless, he really wanted to know just how they did what they did, preventing all his arrows from hitting solidly except for at the closest range possible and with the most strength he could muster, to boot. There had to be something going on there.

All of that was just secondary though. He knew Karem wouldn't approve of what he'd done today, but he planned to change that. One couldn't expect to survive if they went around making needless, stupid mistakes. It wasn't just the strong, but more often the smart that survived... and the dumb and weak died. Nature, and all the strange things it could throw at him, were the ultimate test to see if he was truly worthy of existing. He might have lived through today, but only because of Traveller's help. The next time he visited the Sweetvine Woods, he would never lower himself to prey again. From now on, he was the predator, in every sense of the word.

It’s nice to have a big, powerful friend. Those oh-deer are no joke, and this bard will tell you they’re not a bard’s tale. Silly Sev’ryn. You got a nice haul out of it and you kept all your innards where they belong. Great job.
