Trial for Fire: Guarding the Green

120th of Vhalar
Scalvoris gate leading towards Gunvorton

"So, did you pack everything you need? Once we leave we're not coming back for another 4 trials." Ronan questioned the green hooded figure standing next to him, busy rummaging through his pack. Bren, of the Order of the Adunih, was by all accounts a bookish individual. Thin, lanky, nerdy, he had it all in spades, and yet the young man had chosen for this trip, knowing fully well the dangers that befell both travelers in general but Order members specifically. A string of attacks on Order members had resulted in them reaching out to everyone capable of protecting them. Ronan had only arrived in town some trials ago so he'd missed the big recruitment drive. He'd learned about this via the Elements office, where his first assignment as a Flame Troop was to escort this young man to Gunvorton to visit a patient of his and fetch certain ingredients for their healing items.

While the Elements considered this part of his training and the 50 gold nels waiting for him at the end of this were both good incentives for Ronan to take this job, he figured having the Order owe him a bit would go a long way for the fighter. There were certain things he required in order to survive and having an extra supply of medical sealing jelly would count a long way towards his money making needs. "Yeah, yes, I think so. Medical kit... sutures, the shopping list..." The young healer continued to list things from his pack but Ronan tuned his voice to the background. Two trials of walking to reach Gunvorton, two trials back. At least four trials away from Scalvoris. The Elements knew where he would be, he'd informed them as it was part of his assignment. He'd also spoken with the owner of the Four in Hand to make sure any of the kinks from last time would be worked out by the time he got back.

"...-ould get going then, right? It's two trials to Gunvorton." Ronan blinked and focused back on the young healer. His green robes were clear indicators of who he was and what he did. "Indeed." Ronan nodded and adjusted his backpack slightly. The gauntlets dangling from his belt clanged together with metallic sounds as he started walking. "So... What do you do when you're not bodyguarding?" Ronan turned to face the young healer. "It's a long way to Gunvorton, I hope you're not going to keep asking me questions the whole way there. I work for the Elements as a Trooper. I just started." Ronan could see the blush rising to the young man's face as he chided him. There was nondescript noise from the young healer but he didn't ask any more questions afterwards.

The trip to Gunvorton was peaceful. Ronan had no trouble walking throughout the day and get as much distance covered as he could but the young healer was a different story. His background covered in books didn't really help him out here and they had to stop more often than Ronan appreciated but he was here to guard the healer, not get to Gunvorton as quickly as possible. Besides, if things took longer than expected, perhaps he would earn some extra coin for his trouble. So they stopped when necessary and took breaks near streams when possible. At the end of the first trial, they found a friendly farmer who offered them his barn to sleep in. The following morning they had breakfast with the family and were on the way again but not until after the green hooded young man promised to bring some medical supplies with him for them on the way back.

The entire trip took most of the two trials to get to Gunvorton. They came across little to no disturbances, only seeing a wild animal once. There was a moment when the young healer got terrified of some noises in the bushes and Ronan was on his toes, aware of the potential danger. Both men were relieved to see one of the local Dinili slowly crawling out of the bushes, chewing on some of the leaves. The rest of the trip was uneventful. They arrived early in the evening on the second trial and Bren immediately went out to see his patient and acquire the ingredients he was tasked to get. They had a quick breakfast the next morning before leaving again, this time with two packs full of ingredients and other items. All in all, Ronan's experience of Gunvorton included a lot of darkness and the inside of an Order of the Adunih healer's house.

Trial for Fire: Guarding the Green

The return trip was equally boring. They took a somewhat extended rest in the evening of the first trial at the same farmstead they had stayed at before. The young healer took care of some common life ailments for the farmer and his family and handed over the promised medical supplies. Ronan had to admit he did find it a waste of money, he could've at least sold it to them at the same price, but the young healer seemed to not care about the money. Early the next trial they were up again and received some food for the road. The lunch they had that trial was quite good and Ronan had to admit that it had been a long time since he'd eaten something home cooked like that.

By the late evening, the gates of Scalvoris Town came into view and the young healer seemed to find his second wind. He picked up the pace and Ronan followed suit. They passed into the city quite quickly after that, the entire trip having taken most of five trials to complete. Despite the healer seemingly thinking their journey was done, Ronan now paid more attention to their surroundings than before. Whoever had been attacking Order members had done so within the city limits both here and in Almund which meant that things only got dangerous from here on out. "I know the way from here, if you give me your stuff I'll carry it to the Order on my own. You don't have to go all the way with me." Ronan turned his attention from his surroundings to the young healer. "I would but my money is at the Order so I might as well walk you all the way there."

Bren seemed to find his honesty to be somewhat of a dampener on his excitedness to be back home. "Ah... yes, that's true. Well, follow me then. I know a shortcut." He was gone in a small side street before Ronan could protest his plan of action. Was he looking to get robbed or killed by any chance? Ronan tried to keep an eye on the surroundings and on the healer in front of him to not get lost in the honeycomb of small streets they were heading through now. If an Element had ever patrolled here, Ronan would eat his own shoes. As if Ronan had been blessed with a vision of the future, the healer suddenly came to a halt in front of him as two figures seemed to slip out the shadows ahead of them. Ronan grabbed the healer by the shoulder and turned him around to head back the way they'd come but two more hooded and cloaked figures appeared to block his way.

"Another cloak, eh?" One of the figures behind him spoke as they all slowly advanced. "Seems he's got a bodyguard with him." One of the other ones spit on the ground in front of him. "So? Are you scared of some big guy? Just stab him and be done with it." Ronan shifted his hands to his shoulders and quickly slipped the bands of his backpack from them, putting the thing down next to the wall. He'd need the mobility if he wanted to get out of this alive. One of the two in front of him seemed very excited, despite not being able to see his face. His blade kept flourishing in front of his face, as if he was some sort of expert swashbuckler. Ronan looked back to the other two and by now they were all a step away from striking. The young healer stood, frozen or panicked, in place as they approached. He needed to do something.

"Hey, ho, fellas. No need for violence. You never know when it might be dangerous to attack someone. You'll all die if you do." Before he finished his threat, Ronan's left hand had slid into the gauntlet at his belt and he threw right for the flourishing mugger-slash-killer's face. The surprise was obvious as there was a squeal of pain as the plate gauntlet pushed the man's weapon into his own face, cutting into his face right before the solid plate metal connected with it. Ronan turned and grabbed the healer by the scruff of the neck and tossed him to the side, towards his backpack. There wasn't much room to move in but that meant there was also less space for him to defend. Before he could properly get his second gauntlet out he felt the blade of the other attacker behind him cutting over his back. The wound was light but it was a wound none the less.

Ronan kicked back and felt his foot connecting with the man's stomach and pushed him back. There was wood breaking and garbage clattering in the alley as the man flew into something else. Ronan had a quick trill to himself before the other two recovered from their shock and attacked him. Despite his best attempt to defend himself, several of their cuts connected with his arms, shoulders and upper legs. None of them deep or fatal but all of them bleeding. They lunged forward together and bumped into each other. Ronan quickly lashed out, wrapping steel clad fingers around one man's grip and pulling him forward and down, straight onto Ronan's knee. Whatever he'd had for dinner spilled out onto the alleyway and as Ronan turned to finish him off, a sharp pain exploded from his shoulder as a knife buried itself within.

Despite the black darkness in the alley, Ronan could see the world starting to turn red. He reached over his shoulder for the dagger and pulled it out, letting it clatter to the ground. With teeth clenched together, Ronan's breath passed between his teeth. In the cold weather, white clouds of frozen breath formed in front of his mouth. He spun around, arm out to it's fullest reach. The back of his fist connected with someone's face, who promptly spun around from the impact. Ronan grabbed him by the neck and planted the man's head right into the side wall of the alley. There was a sigh before the body went limp against the wall. Another cut just above his hip had him turn around again to face his new opponent. He punched and got deflected but turned a little against his punch and his elbow suddenly sprang forth. The crunching sound of a nose breaking filled the alley before he reached out and wrapped his hands around the man's neck. Muscles tensed in his arms and shoulders as he lifted the grown man from the ground. As the air got cut off, the man's hands began to claw and he kicked, trying to get free, but Ronan didn't notice his attempts as he simply enjoyed squeezing the life out of the man.

Trial for Fire: Guarding the Green

Suddenly pain rose up through his body from his lower left calf as a sword stabbed into it. The sudden surprise pain had Ronan tense up and his fingers suddenly squeezed down on the man's throat. There was a last gurgle and a sigh and both Ronan and the man dropped to the floor. Ronan dropped to his knees while the other one dropped limp to the floor, windpipe crushed by steel fingers. Ronan roared in pain as he dropped to the floor. Before he could reach back and remove the instrument of his pain, another spike of pain shot up from his leg as someone pulled it out.

Ronan looked back and came face to face with the one he'd kicked back at the beginning of the fight. He reached his weapon back, ready to plunge it into Ronan. The former gladiator tried to bring his gauntlets up to defend himself but being half with his back to his opponent and one leg barely moving to his commands, he didn't see this ending well. A resounding crack echoed through the alley as Bren broke a piece over the man's head and the attacker sank silently to the ground, his dagger clattering on the stones of the alley. Relief washed over Ronan as the world slowly pulled back out of the red. He hadn't gotten the chance to go in to deep so coming back out was easy enough. Not that it was pleasant, the more he became aware of things, the more the pain became clear.

Ronan dropped himself back against the wall of the alley, one leg bleeding heavily from the stab wound there. His clothes were torn and cut in several places and blood was already soaking it along those cuts. Bren was next to him a trill later, looking over the various wounds. "This is bad... This is bad..." The young healer kept repeating the sentence as he couldn't decide where to start. Ronan grabbed him by the wrist, plate fingers digging into the man's skin. "Sealing Jelly in my pack. If you d-nnnnn..." Pain spiked up from the wound in his shoulder as he rubbed it against the wall. "If you don't seal me up, I'll die. Seal up everything." Ronan let go of the young healer's hands who turned to Ronan's pack and rummaged through it. He didn't seem to care that he was discarding the ingredients he'd bought onto the dirty alley stones.

Bren managed to find the jar and pulled it out. The top had already been screwed open before so it was easier to do so this time. He barely noticed that the top of the jelly had some drops of blood crusted on it and along the imprint of two fingers that had scraped out some of the jelly before. He focused on the wounds and hesitated for a moment. "I should... should clean the wounds... sutures. Infections, disease. This is not a clean alley." Ronan grunted through his teeth, doing his best not to slap the healer with his plate covered hand. "Focus, kid! I'm going to keep bleeding until you seal me up. Your sutures won't work, trust me, it's not my first time." To emphasize his point, Ronan grabbed his shirt by the neck with his right hand and gave it a quick tug. The already cut up fabric tore under the stress to reveal Ronan's scar covered chest.

"Seal me up and we'll get to the Order. They can help me further, right?" The young healer seemed to come up from a daze. "What? Oh, y-yes. They can help you." It seemed he didn't have anything else he wanted to remark and started to apply the jelly to the stab wound in his leg. Ronan slowly wiggled his hands out of the gauntlets, letting them lie where they were and pulled the jar a little closer. He simply dunked his left hand into the jar and slapped whatever stuck to it to the various cuts on his other arm. Where he would normally apply it rather precisely, the situation called for drastic measures so he simply sealed his entire upper arm instead. It was somewhat of an odd sight, to see so many bleeding cuts all over his shoulders and upper arms which then suddenly above his elbow and leave untouched lower arms and hands.

Both men worked quickly, Ronan with the experience of arcs of taking care of himself and other fighters in his stable and Bren with the skills he'd learned from the Order. While Ronan focused on some of the minor wounds on his chest and upper legs, Bren pushed him forward a little and got to work on the long, shallow cut on his back and the deep stab wound near his shoulder. Some ten bits later, Bren was pulling Ronan on his feet, supporting the much larger man under his arm. Both their packs and Ronan's gauntlets lay forgotten in the alley as the men started hobbling out of the alley towards the Order of the Adunih house in Scalvoris.
