Accepting the inevitable pt 2

Faith sat on the seat in the docks, snow falling around her, over her and she watched the boat leaving. It was strange, she thought, how their bonds worked. As two people who shared the love they did, she and Padraig would know what each other was feeling in this time. He was missing her, worrying about her, worrying about her missing him, nervous about what he was going to face when he got to the uncharted territory to which he was sailing, concerned for their baby which grew within her. She'd know that without doubt yet, because of the bond they shared, she knew it. The bonds of Qylios from him and the mark of Famula and Vri meant that they knew each other's thoughts and feelings in a very literal sense.

Eventually, it was more or less out of sight. Standing, Faith felt the wind whipping around her and she strained to see; she knew that what she was making out was probably in her imagination more than anything, so she turned and made her way back home. She was waddling, there was no doubting it and Faith smiled to herself as she considered that at least Padraig would miss the truly swollen and grumpy stage of this pregnancy. Depending on how long he was gone of course, he might not. She very much hoped that he would be back before she went to labour, but she was very aware that there was no telling and the portal boots he had meant he could be at her side in a heartbeat. If, for some reason, he needed her there, she could be there too thanks to the link provided to them by Famula.

So, it came down to just missing him. But that was tempered by how inordinately proud of him she was. Still, she made her way back home, nestling into the scarf she had wrapped around her, because for all that she didn't feel the cold at all, thanks to Famula's mark, she also did not like the wind whipping around her face, so she hid behind her scarf and considered that she had always been something of a baby about the weather.

Once she got back to the house, Faith walked in and closed the door with the sort of slow care which meant that she was carefully controlling her emotions. Katie and Luna were next door and Faith smiled at Cosmo as the large dog bounded up to her. Previously, she'd have knelt down to scratch him, but Faith was growing increasingly unsure of her ability to get back up so she just bent slightly. His tail wagging, Cosmo walked with her into the house and Faith smiled as Cyrus came out of the kitchen. He had two cups of tea in his hand, one for her and one for him and he put them down without a word. Faith was quite content to sit there, having lowered herself down on to the sofa, to sit in silence the two of them. She felt better with him being here, she had to say. It wasn't Padraig, but at the same time there was something about Cyrus which was just inordinately restful.

So Faith sipped her tea and the pair of them sat in silence. It wouldn't last, she knew; Katie would be home soon and when the glittermonster arrived, chaos would arrive with her. Faith didn't doubt it.

It was a companionable silence they shared and Faith was more than happy with it. Cyrus was a lot like Padraig in a lot of ways; his caustic sense of humour, his ability to deliver that wit in a dry and measured tone and with pinpoint precision and timing. Also, of course, he was so much more than he seemed to be, and she saw that in the grandfather, as she did with his grandson; he was a kind, compassionate man with a deep reservoir of concern for those around him. She put down her cup and rested her head against the side of the couch for just a moment. There were things to do and she needed to get on and be busy; with both of them staying here with her and Luna, Faith was looking forward to preparing a decent meal for them. She always did, of course, what she cooked for Padraig, Luna and herself she made for Cyrus and Katie, but this was different. This was her proving that she was able to look after them even when he wasn't here. As her eyes drifted closed, Cyrus smiled and lowered his head to his book.

When Faith woke up, two breaks later, she initially thought that she'd closed her eyes for a few bits to the point that no one had noticed. However, there was a warm blanket over her and the smell of something cooking. As she started to move, Cyrus' deep voice spoke. "No need to fret, Katie's not cooking. We've brought dinner over from the restaurant and we'll be doing that while we're staying here." Faith looked at him and was about to argue when he looked at her and, inexplicably, she fell quiet. After a moment, she looked at him and her silver eyes were stern. "You agreed this with him, didn't you?" Cyrus looked at her and smiled, not answering. Faith mumbled to herself about Augustins ganging up to pick on her.

"You're one of those now, little doll," Katie said, coming out from the kitchen and moving over to place a kiss on the top of Faith's head. Faith smiled as Cyrus' girlfriend sat down. "I suppose I am," Faith said and she smiled at Cyrus, "but not the kind who would gang up on a poor pregnant woman." As Cyrus made a strange snorting noise, Katie looked at him adoringly.

"My Cy only picks on the people he loves. Besides, that's his great grandchild you're growing in there. That's the most important job of all." Faith looked at Katie and she spoke, softly. "Both of yours. Not just Cyrus'. You're both going to be grandparents, not just Cyrus." Faith didn't spot the slight smile of approval on Cyrus' face, because her attention was focused entirely on Katie. "Oh, Immortals, don't cry! I'm sorry, not if you don't want it!" Faith, totally misunderstanding Katie's reaction, was quick to reassure the woman that she didn't need to do anything she didn't want to. Katie shook her head and lifted a finger to the earnest young woman's lips. Faith stopped in some surprise. "Katie's happy, little doll. You are... thank you."

Faith shook her head and smiled as Katie's hand took hold of hers, squeezing gently. "We need you to think about what you'd like the baby to call you, actually." Faith said, to both of them. Cyrus seemed utterly engrossed in his book, but Katie seemed rather surprised, despite what Faith had just said. "Think about whether you want to be Grams, or Gran or.. whatever really. Both of you, so that Padraig and I can call you it in front of Bun."

Katie looked rather surprised and asked, "Bun?". Faith nodded, "The baby. Bun. In the oven." Cyrus let out a snort and Katie smiled and shook her head. "Cy and I will talk about it little doll. Get some rest, I'll wake you in time for food, alright?" There was something just unarguable with the woman, Faith thought, as Katie fussed over her, insisting that she lifted her legs properly, tucking the blanket around her and yet, Faith was an independent individual and she wouldn't be fussed over. She was going to put a stop to it, she thought, as sleep took over once again.

Once they'd eaten, Cyrus went out to wash the dishes. Faith had tried to argue but he wasn't having any of it. "Luna and I enjoy it, gives us peace and quiet." Faith smiled at Luna, the former slave Padraig had rescued from Immortals' Tongue. It was a sign of how far Luna had come, how much progress she had made that she was alright with Padraig being gone. Cyrus, of course, was a big source of comfort to her, still. But Faith looked at Luna and raised an eyebrow. "It's true," Luna said, the slightest whisper of a smile crossing her face for a moment. "I like to feel useful." Faith wished that she could argue with Luna, but she understood entirely. "Me too. Sadly, I'm too fat and people fuss too much," Luna smiled, a more lingering one this time and Cyrus snorted.

When the two of them had gone, Katie smiled and spoke. "So, little doll. This pregnancy is making you tired. Why don't we agree to make things together, you and I, whilst Padraig is away?" Faith looked at Katie and she sighed slightly. On the one hand, Faith wanted Katie to be wrong, but she knew without a doubt that the woman wasn't. For all that Katie was maybe ten arcs older than her, Faith recognised that Katie was wiser than she seemed. And, in this, she was also right. "It will stop the men folk fussing, and we can be productive here. What do you say, little doll?"

Faith smiled and nodded her head. "That sounds fun," she said, with a smile. "I've designed some clothes already. Do you want to see them? They're just.." Faith started to swing her legs down and stopped as she felt Katie's hand on her arm. She looked rather sheepish and motioned to the chair where she normally sat when she wasn't being held hostage on the sofa. "There's a sheaf of parchment there?" Katie retrieved them and Faith pulled out the swathe of them which were held together with a clasp and had the word "Bun" on the front. Each of them was written in Faith's usual script, her diagrams were more than simplistic, her drawing not at all skilled, but functional.

Katie's eyes widened, as she looked at them, leafing through them. "You can make these? Tell me about them." Faith smiled and nodded, then looked at the one that Katie was looking at. "Well, that's for a set. A small coat, hat, boots and mitts. The thing is, the hat and boots and mitts we might put on the baby more than once before we wash them, but once Bun has worn the little jacket, it'll be in the wash." Faith would be, there was no doubt, a meticulous and fussy individual when it came to dressing her child. "So I've designed these. The hat, mitts and boots are white and the edging is two colours, lets say green and yellow. Then, here, the jacket - I make one green with white edging and one yellow with white edging. So both jackets match the accessories, but are still different."

Katie nodded, "What does this show?" Faith turned her attention and smiled. "Well," she replied, "I've designed the jacket so that it's got room for Bun to grow. but I also made sure here, that the seams are on the sides. Bun will be laying down a lot, so I don't want any seams being uncomfortable or anything." Katie looked at Faith and smiled, looking rather emotional as she did. "Little doll, these are beautiful." Faith shook her head. "They're in my head still at the moment," she admitted. Katie patted her hand. "Lets make them, then, shall we?" Faith smiled and nodded.

"Some of them, I've got to put measurements on still, then I can transfer them into patterns, I think. Would you like to help me? I've got a lot of patterns from when I made clothes for Lady Elyna's baby, Elsie." Katie nodded and the pair of them were soon sitting, engrossed in the discussion of, and planning for, making baby clothes, blankets and other accessories. At the sound of twin giggles from the living room, Cyrus turned to Luna and smiled.

Overview

Comments: I really loved this thread. There's just something so... homey about it, if that makes sense. The atmosphere is wonderful, so warm and reminiscent of family and autumn, and I love that despite Faith being sad that Padraig's not there she has people who love her and who are able to care for her. The little touches are the best part-- the softly falling snow, how she kept drifting asleep tucked into the couch, how everyone wanted to do the cooking and dishes for her so she could rest. It's just really great to see her surrounded by people who care for her.

Also, might I say that I've always found it so touching that Faith is able to sew for the people she loves. It's beautiful that she's able to make her own baby clothes, and design them with little Bun in mind. She's going to be a great mom.
