[Redwood Redoubt] An Uninvited Guest

2nd of Cylus, Arc 718
Redwood Redoubt's gymnasium was fairly busy that day, with pairs of Flame Elements practicing together in the multitude of sparring rings. The sound of wooden practice weapons clinked and snapped loudly, echoing throughout the large wooden chamber. Sephira strode through the gym to an empty training ring that was the furthest from the other practicing Elements. As always the woman kept a wary distance between herself and those she did not know very well. This trial however she was far less worried about her comrades opinion on mages as she had no intention of using her craft. Today was all about refining her swordplay and combat stances. Her master Elias had focused less on proper sword form with her instruction, and more on the use of Rupturing. It would be a refreshing change to practice like a normal Element today.

Walking over to a nearby table adorned with several wooden practice weapons Sephira carefully unbuckled her own sword and swapped it out for a much safer alternative. The wooden weapon did not match Wyvern’s dimensions perfectly, but she did not require a perfect facsimile for her training.

Hefting the lighter wooden weapon the mage took a moment to slouch off her telltale crimson coat and set it aside. Moving to the center of the ring Sephira stepped into a basic guard stance, with her sword set at hip level with its point angled upwards. This was about the extent of her knowledge on stances; it was effective and allowed the swordsman to protect their sword arm and shoulder. Returning to this position was easier than other more complicated guard stances, but the protection was limited.

Without a word Sephira stepped forward, raising her weapon to block an imaginary opponent before stepping back to return to her previous stance. It was hard to get an impression of what an actual block would feel like since she was practicing alone, but Sephira was a little paranoid about asking for someone to join her that she was not familiar with.

Her inner thoughts were interrupted when a haggard voice spoke up from behind her.

“Need a partner?”
the words were said as more of a statement than a question.

Nearly stumbling back in surprise Sephira turned behind her to see an Element with graying hair watching her from the edge of the ring. The man was only a few inches taller than her, but his grizzled beard and brow made him intimidating enough to the young woman.

“I’m fine.”She replied hastily, making move as if to return to her solo training.

“You aren’t gonna learn anything doin it that way.” He said gruffly, walking toward the table of weapons to choose a longsword that was slightly longer than her own practice sword.

“Um...no really I’m good.”The mage said with a frown crossing her features. Sephira furrowed her brow at the stranger as he took up position opposite her in the ring.

“Sorry but who are you?” The woman asked sharply as the older man took up a position opposite her in the sparring ring. He gave the wooden longsword a slight flourish while he took up a different guard stance than Sephira had been practicing earlier. His practice sword was pointed down across the front of his left leg, guarding the lower left side of his body.

Obviously the newcomer had no intention of introducing himself as he lunged at the mage before she had readied herself, the tip of his sword smacking into her unprotected wrist. Yelping in pain Sephira stumbled back into her heels, swapping the wooden sword to her other hand while she wrung out her throbbing wrist.

“What the hell was that for?!” she exclaimed angrily; her cheeks burning with embarrassment.

“Not my fault you weren’t ready.” The stranger grumbled at the mage before taking up the same guard again. Again he lunged at Sephira but this time she was ready, having taken up the sword in her right hand and settled back into her basic guard stance. There was a resounding crack as the weapons impacted each other, however the mage was still forced to take a step back from the force of the blow and was rewarded with another painful smack on her wrist. Wincing, Sephira rubbed her forearm while her tutor smirked at her.

“When you’re using a smaller weapon than a bigger, stronger opponent, you need to parry, not block the blow. If you block, then the heavier strike will always win out.” Her bearded opponent explained; his tone stern and unforgiving.

“Parrying will always be the better option, because you can easily deflect a stronger strike with less energy than your opponent is using. A fight is a contest of resolve and fortitude, not pretty swords.” The stranger said with a derisive look toward where her sheathed saber was resting on the nearby table.

“Maybe you’re lucky and you can end a fight quickly…” The man said while he idly circled the ring with his wooden longsword held between himself and the mage. “But maybe you’re not so lucky and you’ve got to make sure you are the last one standing.” Again he lunged at the woman, striking similarity to before, with a low upward sweep of the sword. Sephira reacted almost instinctually, trying to get her weapon between herself and her opponent. She knew she couldn’t try and meet the blow, so instead she drove the point of her sword down and out, using a glancing parry to deflect his attack to her right.

“Fight smart, not hard.” The grizzled man said with a satisfied grin before snapping his weapon back in a looping motion that again forced Sephira back another step before she managed to raise her arm to parry.

Thankfully there was no punishing wrist smack this time; her teacher seemed to be pleased enough with her progress not to punish her ignorance of good sword form.

The pair went through another bout, the nameless Flame Element explaining the use of different guard stances for different situations. The one she had already known was the most common although it was not always suitable for any given situation. The low left handed stance her teacher had been utilized was used to protect the legs and the swordsman’s stomach. It was idea for smaller opponents who might be more inclined to try and take a swipe at the legs in the hope of an easy victory.

In the late hours of the morning Sephira and her sparring partner began working through the positioning for a head guard. Her bearded teacher showing her how to properly hold her sword high above her head, with its point tipped slightly downwards and toward her opponent. This stance was useful when facing taller opponents that would hope to end a confrontation quickly through brute strength. She could easily use gravity to assist in stronger parries that would deflect a blade far from her body.

Briefly he spoke on the importance of flexibility, chiding the mage on the extension of her sword arm and the distance she covered with her lunges. It was painful at first, forcing her body to stretch and reach further than was normally comfortable to her, but Sephira was beginning to appreciate the results.

“There, reach and strike….come on girl, is that the best you can do?” Her partner snapped as he easily blocked her horizontal slice. “And retreat, then lunge…” he directed, putting the woman through her paces. Suddenly he went on the offensive, testing her defenses with careful vertical strikes aimed for her right shoulder. “Parry…good” he said as her practice weapon batted away his strikes with the least amount of energy possible before reversing her direction and pressing the advantage gained from deflecting his attacks.

Sweat beaded on her forehead and neck as the two continued the brutal pace. Slowly Sephira’s arm began to grow heavier and heavier until she was barely managing to meet his attacks. He had been right that energy was a valuable resource in combat that had to be spent wisely. It was much like how the mage could only expend and handle a certain amount of ether before she began to feel the effects of overstepping. It was strange to see the parallels between physical and magical exertion. It became clearly apparent to the young woman that she would need to invest more time strengthening her endurance. Sephira often used Rupturing in concert with her saber, so her expenditure of energy could be double that of a normal non-mage combatant if she was not careful.

“That’s enough for now.” The strange man said gruffly, tossing his practice sword with a loud clatter onto the nearby table. Sephira asked no questions and stepped from the ring to return her practice weapon a bit more carefully to its original location. She was more than happy to end the bout here before she completely exhausted herself. Grabbing her weapons belt and saber in her hand the mage turned to the man.

“Thanks for the match.” Sephira muttered sullenly while the man collected his things and began walking toward the exit to the gymnasium without so much as a goodbye.

“You never said who you are" She called after him, her eyes flooded with a soft muted blue that reflected her curiosity.
The man halted briefly only a few feet outside the sparring ring and turned back to her with a muddled expression containing irritation and a small modicum of respect.

“Name’s Jax.” He responded brusquely.

Sephira immediately recognized the name as she had heard it in passing before when around the other Elements. Granted the name was always said in hushed whispers with an air of mystery about it. Jaxkson was the name of one of the four Flame Assistants, though many Elements knew very little about him aside from the fact that he had once been a Ranger and that now worked in Almund.

“You’re Jax...?” Sephira said with her arms crossed, peering down her nose at him. “I thought you never left Almund.” The statement held the tone of a question but it seemed that Jax had no interest in in giving her any explanation for his presence at the command post.

“Just passing though.” The Flame Assistant muttered before turning on his heel and heading toward the exit. That was the end of that, no goodbyes or anything a normal person might think to do at the end of a conversation. Shaking her head the mage did not follow the man but rather watched him depart as mysteriously as he arrived.
