Seeing the World through a Child's Eyes

93rd Ashan, 718

When they reached the front gate of Luna's Dream, Teia helped Kaien wave at Lei'lira, and took her leave with the kids. Lei'lira was too nervous about the crowds to walk to the orphanage on her own, but she felt safe enough once she was there that she didn't need Teia's constant presence. She paused to pat the big shaggy dog that "escorted" any stranger to the door before stepping inside.

It was like walking into chaos. But it was a fun, energetic, joyful kind of chaos that only children can create. Kids ran about playing, and calling out to each other. Lei'lira made her way into the kitchen where she found both Felicia Hounsworth and Nats Bettes helping to clean up after breakfast. The former woman ran the orphanage, and the latter was the teacher. Neither woman was a common sight in the kitchen, especially Nats, who preferred her own company when not teaching. Seeing them both cleaning up the lunch dishes told Lei'lira that something was wrong. Concerned, she hurried over, and joined in with the work.

"It's good to see you, Lei'lira. Tanya couldn't make it in, so we've been short handed all trial."

That explained it. Lei'lira nodded to show that she had been listening as she scrubbed a plate vigorously. She was just glad that it wasn't something worse.

"I think Nats was the washing covered. Why don't you take over the drying from me so that I can get back to the paperwork?" Felicia suggested.

Lei'lira grinned as she nodded in agreement. Felicia's organizational skills were well known among the staff of Luna's Dream. They were one of her strongest traits, matched only by her kindness. To see them in action now over something as simple as washing the dishes was both amusing, and very typical of the woman she worked for.

"We've got it covered." Lei'lira promised her boss.

They worked in a companionable silence. Between the two of them, Lei'lira and Nats got the work done quickly. After the dishes were put away, Nats started to excuse herself, but was stopped before she could escape when Tae'ryn burst into the kitchen in tears and wrapped her tiny arms around Nats' legs tightly.

"What's wrong, little one?" Nats asked the five arc old in concern as she knelt and enveloped the small child in a hug.

"Anton called me a poo poo head!" she sobbed.

Lei'lira frowned, in confusion. Not only did she not know what Anton had called the little Sev'ryn girl, she wasn't even certain which language she had spoken in. Fortunately Nats took a trill to whisper that it meant poo poo head in Ku'aric, one of the languages written and spoken in Central Idalos. While Nats was trying to calm Tae'ryn, Lei'lira walked over and gave her shoulder a comforting squeeze.

"Well that wasn't very nice of him, now was it?" she asked.

Tae'ryn shook her head. After a trill, she turned and hugged Lei'lira. Lei'lira was happy to see that the young girl seemed to have overcome her shyness around her at last.

"He said I was stupid, too."

Once again Nats came to her rescue, explaining that it meant stupid in Pailtic, another of the languages that was written and spoken in Central Idalos.

"Well, I don't think that you're stupid." Lei'lira replied in Xanthea, knowing that Tae'ryn would understand her.

"I think that you are a very smart girl."

Any child who knew five different languages would have to be. Even though children learned languages more readily than adults did, that was still a real accomplishment. Tae'ryn had a real skill for languages, being able to speak Common, Scalveen, Xanthea, Pailtic, and Ku'aric. Lei'lira had no doubt that she would become fluent in all five languages eventually. Maybe even more.

"Would you like me to tell you a story?" Lei'lira asked, hoping to distract the little girl.

"A story? Really?" Tae'ryn asked eagerly.

"A story just for me?"

Lei'lira grinned at Tae'ryn. The little girl loved stories.

"Yes, a story just for you."

"Can I listen to the story, too?"

Lei'lira looked up to see one of Tae'ryn's three older sisters, Sai'ryl standing in the doorway.

Sai'ryl was a sensitive child who was eager to please the people she cared about. Her greatest joy was to make others happy. And she loved stories just as much as her little sister did.

"I think we can allow that. What do you think, Tae'ryn?" Lei'lira asked with a grin.

Tae'ryn giggled.

"Of course she can hear it, too!"

"Between you, and our "Little Mother" over there, I think you have things well in hand here. So if you don't mind, I have papers to grade."

With that, Nats took her leave, and Lei'lira led the children into one of the quieter common rooms so she could tell them a story.

Seeing the World through a Child's Eyes

"Once upon a time, there was a magical place that appeared out of nowhere in Vhalar of last arc. This was a very special place, one where all children could go and find happiness..."

Lei'lira drew heavily on things she had seen here, and heard about the orphanage as she spun a tale of magic and wonder for the two little girls. By the time she was finished, Tae'ryn was in a good mood once more. With a little reassurance, and the promise that Anton would be spoken to, she ran off to play. But Sai'ryl continued to linger. Lei'lira watched the Sev'ryn girl for a few trills to see if she would say what she wanted. When she didn't, Lei'lira decided to ask.

"Can I help you with something?"

"I need help with my homework. Will you help me, please?"

"Of course I will. What are you having trouble with?"

"Math. This is the problem I need help with."

Sai'ryl opened her text book, and pointed out one of the sample problems. It was a word problem, one of the kind that she herself had always had trouble with as a child. So she started by trying to teach Sai'ryl some of the tricks that her teacher had taught her when she had been the one looking for help with her homework. But she quickly learned that while Sai'ryl was a very bright young girl who learned quickly, she was likely to become distracted easily if she wasn't interested in what she was learning. And it was quite obvious that she wasn't interested in math. Not in this type of problem, at least.

Lei'lira tried to get Sai'ryl to see it as a challenge rather than a homework assignment. That seemed to help a little, and with the girl's renewed interest in the problem, she got the hang of it pretty quickly. Lei'lira had her solve a few more problems just to make certain that she understood the concept. Then she sent her off to go finish her homework on her own.

Seeing the World through a Child's Eyes

Lei'lira was about to go see what else she could help with when soft, beautiful sounds caught her attention. It was clearly the sound of a musical instrument of some kind, though Lei'lira didn't know which one it was. She had never heard anything like it before. The notes were slow, and hesitant, probably coming from someone who was still trying to get their feel for the instrument. But they were beautiful all the same, and Lei'lira found herself drawn to see who was playing it.

As she followed the notes, she found her way to Ei'ryl's room. She and her twin Ei'ryn were the older sisters of Sai'ryl and Tae'ryn. Like their younger sisters, the twins were full Sev'ryn. But while Sai'ryl and Tae'ryn had not found their ose-bori yet, the twins had found theirs. Ei'ryl was often found talking to someone named Sarasin that no one else could see, and Ei'ryn had an "invisible friend" named Hoshi. From her own experience with Lei'luna, Lei'lira knew exactly what the girls were talking to.

The door was open, so Lei'lira stood in the doorway to listen, not wanting to interrupt Ei'ryl's practice session. If Lei'lira's untrained ear was anything to go by, the younger girl was quite skilled at the instrument...whatever it was. It was beautiful, but it looked more like a decoration for a wealthy person's home than anything she recognized as an instrument. It was made out of glass and metal, and looked like a series of five glass bowls attached to a metal frame. The smallest one was on the top, and the largest on the bottom. Lei'lira had no idea what type of instrument it was, but one thing she was certain of was that it sounded as beautiful as it looked.

When Ei'ryl stopped playing, Lei'lira clapped softly in appreciation. Her presence must have startled the twins, because both looked up at her with wide eyes. Ei'ryl's expression was guarded until she recognized Lei'lira. Then she smiled. Ei'ryn's was nervous until she too recognized who had come to visit them. Their expressions were very telling of their personalities. Ei'ryl was a friendly child, but she was very protective of her three younger sisters. As a result, she tended to be cautious when someone approached her if she was with one of her sisters until she determined that the person approaching them wasn't a threat. Ei'ryn, on the other hand, was a timid, painfully shy child. So when confronted, her first reaction was fear, much like Lei'lira's own reaction to being approached by a stranger. Both girls loved beautiful things, and longed to create beauty of their own. But while Ei'ryl's talent lay with music, Ei'ryn was skilled at drawing. She spoke through her art much the same was as Ei'ryl spoke through her music.

And if music "speaks," then the language of music is universal because anyone can appreciate the beauty of music, no matter what language they speak.

"Did you like it?" Ei'ryl asked shyly.

Lei'lira nodded enthusiastically.

"I loved it. But...what is it? I've never seen anything like it before."

Ei'ryl smiled.

"It's a glass flute. They can only be bought in Egilrun, Scalvoris Town, Almund and Faldrass. I've gotten a hang of the basics, but I'm really not very good with it yet." she said shyly.

A flute? It sure doesn't look like any flute I have ever seen... Lei'lira thought, thinking of the flute that her mother had left behind when she returned to Desnind.

"I thought you were." Lei'lira said simply.

Ei'ryl shook her head.

"In the hands of a skilled musician, they can echo the sound of rain, laughter or even harmonize in beautiful melodies. I'm nowhere near being able to do any of those things yet."

Ei'ryl hesitated for a few bits.

"Would you like to hear another song?"

Lei'lira smiled as she nodded.

"I would love to." she said sincerely.

Ei'ryl's eyes lit up with a mixture of pride, and joy as she began to play once more.

Comments: This was a very nice solo. The dialogue was well written and felt natural, and I just loved how Lei’lira interacted with the children. My favourite sentence was the following one though:
And if music "speaks," then the language of music is universal because anyone can appreciate the beauty of music, no matter what language they speak.
This was beautiful!
