Lady's Perogative

It punctuated her every thought, like a comma or a full stop which must exist in each sentence. I'm pregnant. Like the notation for addition, subtraction, division or multiplication in a written sum given by a maths tutor near an arc ago, it was there in every task, each step dictated by it. I'm going to have a baby like something which had always been there, was fundamental to her and yet which no one save very few knew. She and Padraig were having a baby, a child conceived in love. It was more overwhelming than anything she had ever experienced in her life, and Faith had been in situations which were, at their core, all encompassing.

This, though? There was nothing like this.

Things had been so strange in the last two seasons. The season before, she had been kidnapped and Faith knew, she knew that she wasn't dealing with that, she hadn't dealt with it. When she thought about it.. Faith shook her head and pushed it away. No. She wasn't thinking about it, not now. Not ever. What had happened on the mountains of Scalvoris had left a deep scar in the young woman but, as yet, she would not recognise it or even acknowledge it.

If she acted like everything was fine, then it would be.

It didn't fool Padraig, she knew. But then, he was doing just the same and they both knew it. They would deal with it, together, when they were ready to. Not a bit before and not a trill after, so there was no point worrying about it. She had, after all, other things to worry about. Like this child growing inside her, due to be born in Cylus. It was cold in Cylus and Faith knew that she needed to get going now on making things. They could afford to buy things, there was no doubting it ~ but she didn't want to. She wanted to make things. Clothes and blankets, bedding and toys, all the things she had put into lists some time before when she first found out she was pregnant.

The young woman went to the drawers where she kept her materials, yarn and so on and she looked at what she had. Then, she got started. When she had been in Tristan's ownership, Lady Elyna had been pregnant and Faith, as a slave, had not been able to own anything. So, as a gift to the noble lady, Faith had written out a number of patterns for baby clothing. Knitted, crocheted and sewn, her blessing from Vri meant that she was able to remember them exactly and so she did not need to go out and buy any patterns or visit the library. Still, what she did was open up on of the empty journals she had and she started by carefully writing out the pattern she was about to follow.

What she would do, Faith decided, was start with hats, mittens and small boots. They were quick to make up and they would be able to be stored. Also, she could make them in set with small jackets and they would be pretty. The issue, of course, was that she did not know whether she was having a boy or a girl so she decided that she was going to make plain, non-adorned pieces, with patterns in them. Delicate lace patterns, just on the brim or along one side of a hat, on the edgings of boots and the cuff of mittens which carried over to the waistband of a small jacket, for example, made a pretty set.

So, that was where she started.

Hats, mittens, boots. They were easy and straightforward to make and quick, too. Where she knitted and crocheted them, that was done easily enough. However, Faith wanted to make fabric outfits, too, which would not usually be suitable for a child in Cylus but, she thought that she had a way of doing this which would help. It would require careful laying of fabric but she thought that she'd be able to keep the baby warm without needing heavy clothing.

As Faith worked, unconsciously, she began to sing in a quiet voice. It didn't seem right to be quiet when there were two of them in the room. Maybe more a part of her mind whispered, but Faith pushed that to one side and she looked up as Cosmo, their dog, came through the door into the room with her. Stopping to fuss the large dog, she was pleased as always to see him. "I'm making things for the baby, Cosmo. That'll be nice, won't it? You'll protect the baby, because you're a good dog." Cosmo's tail thumped against the floor as he lay down in front of the small stove in the room.

Faith turned her attention to the pattern for the hat, drawing it out carefully, measuring it and then measuring again before cutting the paper pattern, That, she carefully pinned to the fabric and began the slow process of cutting out. Once it was cut, then trimmed neatly, she put the pieces to one side, threading the needle and getting the hems sorted. It was straightforward work, but the layering of fabric was key and Faith realised that she was needing to take more time with this than usual. That was fine, because this would be light, easier to wash and dry (which was vital in Cylus) and yet warm.

Each piece which she made like this took longer, but Faith was delighted with the outcome. The tiny hat, mittens and boots were light in weight, would be much easier to wash and dry and yet, when she put the hat over her hand, it was warmer than it should be. Faith smiled, delighted with that. So, next to try that with was a blanket, she decided. A small patchwork cotton blanket which would look and feel light.

That, with light cotton sheets would work to keep the baby warm at night, although in Cylus the days and nights were one thing; it was eternal night time. So, Faith decided that she was going to make a pretty blanket with a shape in the center of each of the patchwork squares. That shape, different in each one, would be made using the technique she'd learned which meant that the colours shifted and changed. Then, she would edge the piece with that and it meant that the baby would have a shimmering, warm blanket.

Each individual patchwork square first, Faith made sure to embroider pretty patterns each one. Stars sewn in to the square itself, an embellishment in the fabric itself. Then, she got some of the shimmering multi-coloured fabric which she had made previously and cut it into one of three different shapes. Each one was a star of some kind, but there was one with five points, one with seven and one with nine. Arranging them on to the blanket, Faith smiled in delight at the thought of it. There was a low wuff from Cosmo and she turned to look at the dog.

"What?" Faith asked, with a smile to the dog and he came over and rested his head on her lap. "Am I not giving you enough attention, is that it? Look. Do you like this?" The dog wagged his tail good naturedly and Faith gave him the fuss and attention he was looking for. They were going to have to decorate a room, she realised; maybe Luna would help with artwork and drawing.

As she heard a knock on the door, Faith's heart leaped into her throat as she was suddenly completely convinced that it was Alexander, the necromancer who had kidnapped her. Cosmo lifted his head and stood, ready to go with her, although she didn't want to go. Yet, the rational part of her mind was clear; if it was him, he wouldn't knock. Yet still. Faith pushed the fear she felt down and she went to answer the door, relieved to see the butcher's boy, who had been sent with a question about a delivery to Cally's. Yet, it struck Faith as not ideal, that moment of fear. She would have to keep an eye on that, she knew. Lowering her hand to scratch the large dog who seemed to sense her unease and remained closer to her than he normally would, Faith went back into her study in the house, which had become a craft room since Padraig had built her a workshop in the garden, and she got back on with the job of putting together the blanket. Careful, equal stitches and an attention to detail meant that she could ignore the nagging feeling that something wasn't quite right with her reaction to the knocking on the door.

Should she talk about this with Padraig? Every instinct she had said yes, but Faith was concerned about worrying him. Normally, she was much more rational than this, she knew that she should tell him. She knew that they had no secrets from each other. She had told him, after all, about the worst horrors of her childhood, yet she knew that she wouldn't tell him this. Even as she knew she should, that she needed to, she pushed it away and decided that, no matter that a few moments ago she knew that things weren't right, now she was quite clear that she was fine.

She'd just changed her mind was all.

This was a multifaceted sort of thread with some sweet baby prep moments, a bit of Faith thoughtfulness, and then some lingering fear. So much to deal with all at once! Don’t hide things from Padraig, though. Ahem.

Because of his Competency in Empathy magic, Pash exudes an aura of calm emotion that is always "on." While it's not strong enough to overcome extreme emotions and it also loses strength the more people he's around, it's still up to you how that affects your character in whatever situation we're in.
