Treasure Hunting

33rd Ashan, 718

"Is there anything that you want to buy while we're here?" Tei'serin asked curiously.

As she listened to her mother's reply, she began making plans of her own. It was a rare treat, being allowed to venture into the city to take advantage of the deals on the holiday. Tei'serin never would have dreamed of asking if she could go, but Thorin had suggested it on his last "visit." Suggested, not ordered. There had been no bizarre orders of amounts of nels she was supposed to spend in certain places. No lists of specific things she had to buy for him. Just the suggestion that she go, and the tactic approval should she decide to do so. Tei'serin didn't know what to make of it. And she certainly didn't trust it. But that wasn't going to prevent her from taking advantage of the offer while she had the chance.

Tei'serin wanted to make a trip to the Northern Temple while she was here in Ne'haer. Just being there made her feel closer to Moseke, and she wanted to thank her for the opportunity to see her mother again. While she was there, she hoped to buy trinkets for her mother and siblings. Then there was the bookstore. A magical place where she could happily spend all trial if allowed to. There were several books she wanted to buy, and some of them were quite expensive. Buying them during the holiday would help a great deal, allowing her to indulge her love of learning. There were more practical considerations as well. Her mother and siblings could use more clothing, and the kids could use some books and toys. When Thorin had brought them to live with her, he hadn't allowed them to bring anything other than the clothes they were wearing. Tei'serin planned to remedy that situation this trial. Finally, she hoped to buy some more livestock. Owning her own bull would mean she wouldn't have to pay the fee for breeding her cow each arc, for example. And with more people living in her household, having more than one cow would give her access to much needed supplies. Buying some chickens couldn't hurt, either. And she hoped to be able to afford a horse for each of them to make the trip into Treth each trial easier on them. Not to mention the occasional trip into the city.

With a "plan" of sorts firmly in mind, Tei'serin began trying to figure out where she wanted to go first, and whether it would be a good idea to split up, or if they should stay together.

It was decided that it would be better if they split up. Tei'serin's mother wanted to start looking for clothes, and get that out of the way first. That way, the "fun" stuff could be used as a reward for good behavior. Tei'serin was perfectly happy with that idea because it would allow her to head over to the Eastern Shrine. There were three temples in particular that she wanted to visit there, and she wanted privacy for those visits.

As she made her way to the Eastern Shrine with Ei'ryl, Tei'serin glanced at the dark mark that had appeared on her daughter's right heel nine trials ago. It was an image of stylized wind, and it was pitch black in color. When it had appeared, Tei'serin had nearly panicked as she tried to figure out what had caused it. But after some thought, she realized that given who Ei'ryl's father was, it was only natural to think that she might have inherited some abilities of her own. So even though she didn't know what the mark meant, or what its appearance meant for her daughter, she was somewhat relieved in the knowledge that it was something related to Ziell. For that reason, one of the shrines she wanted to visit belonged to Ziell. She didn't think that Ziell would be there, of course. Nor did she think that he would come, or answer her in any way. But this was the first sign that Ei'tyl had been blessed with any abilities of her own, and she wanted to share that knowledge with Ziell. Even if he didn't answer, Tei'serin hoped that he would somehow sense his daughter's presence at one of his shrines, and listen to what she had to say.

But her first visit was to Moseke's shrine. The saying "May stone cradle you and nature bridle you" was etched into the shrine, and she took comfort in those words as she dropped ten gold nels into the offering bowl.

"This is the first chance I've had to get to Ne'haer since Ei'ryl was born. I wanted you to meet my daughter. She is..."

Tei'serin looked around to make certain that no one else was around to hear her. She didn't want to the news of who her daughter's father was to become public knowledge. It was no one's business but hers, Ei'ryl's, and Ziell's.

"She is Ziell's daughter, too, but I imagine that you knew that already. She is the one I was so desperate to protect when that man attacked me in the maze."

Tei'serin shifted her daughter's weight so that she could touch the scar around her neck. Even now, she had nightmares about what had happened to her in that maze.

"I want you to know that I haven't forgotten what you told me, Moseke. You asked me to learn how to defend myself, and I am going to do just that. I'm going to buy a bow while I am here this trial. And I promise that I am going to learn how to use it."

Having said what she had meant to say, Tei'serin left Moseke's shrine, and made her way to the next shrine that she wanted to visit. Ymiden's shrine of Birth was much like Moseke's shrine of Life, differing only in the saying that was carved into it. The words "Every night breaks with dawn" seemed to give Tei'serin hope as she placed ten gold nels into the offering bowl. It was a message of hope, and she began to wonder if the "night" that was the nightmare her life under his control was might come to an end one trial, too. It was a daring thought, and she couldn't quite resist the need to look around to make sure he hadn't sensed her thoughts somehow and appeared to punish her for them. But she was alone aside from her daughter, and she took comfort in that.

"I feel like I failed you. You asked us to help you get an artifact that you wanted to present to Moseke as a gift. I really wanted to be able to get that artifact for you. I might have wanted to do it because I thought the gift would make Moseke happy, but I wanted to do it to help you, as well. And I failed. I wasn't strong enough to succeed any more than I was strong enough to defend myself against the man who killed me. And for that, I am truly sorry. I wanted you to know that. It is something that I hope to change about myself starting this trial."

Tei'serin paused to look at the words engraved in the shrine once more.

"Perhaps if I am able to become stronger, I will be able to escape Thorin, too." she finished in a tiny whisper.

There was one more shrine that Tei'serin wanted to visit, and having said what she wanted to say to Ymiden, she moved to Ziell's shrine; the shrine of Prophecy. "May the future be calm and cold" was engraved into the shrine, and Tei'serin smiled when she saw the words. Once again, she looked around to make certain that no one could hear her.

"I know that you met Ei'ryl the trial she was born, Ziell. But I wanted to show you how big she was getting. It seems like she is getting bigger every trial. I also wanted to let you know that she seems to have inherited an ability from you. Nine trials ago, I noticed that an image of stylized wind appeared on her heel. I don't know why it appeared, or what it might mean, but I think it must be something that she inherited from you. And when I think about it, the symbol of wind might mean the winter wind that is part of your domain."

When she looked at her daughter's heel again, the symbol was gone. What did it mean? Tei'serin wasn't sure if she would ever know...or if she was even meant to. But as long as it wasn't dangerous to her precious daughter, she wasn't going to worry about it. She hoped that if it was a danger to her in some way, that Ziell would tell her, and help her protect their daughter. Nothing happened, but she never thought that it would.

"I just wanted to tell you that, and since I was already coming here anyway, this trial was a good time to do it." she said softly.

Tei'serin took ten gold nels our of her coin purse, and placed them in the offering bowl. She had said what she wanted to, and it was time to leave. She stopped long enough to buy five pebble charms, one for each of her family members. Then she made her way out of the temple.

Tei'serin's next stop was a book store that she had been to before; Written Wisdom. Book stores were magical wonders to Tei'serin. As a teacher, they were places where children could find fountains of information to help them with their learning. But for herself, they were places filled with treasures just waiting to be found. Entire trials could vanish in a trill as she lost herself among the shelves. Unfortunately, there were others who were going to be looking for her sooner or later, and she had more shopping to do when she was done here. So she was mindful of the time as she browsed.

She didn't have anything specifically in mind that she wanted to buy. But she did find a number of books that interested her. Among them were two encyclopedias, one on languages, and one on herbal remedies, a couple of kids books, some blank journals, as well as Intermediate Linguistics, and Advanced Linguistics, the second and third books in a series that she had bought the first one the arc before. After making her purchases, she made her way out of the store.

As Tei'serin made her way towards the next stop in her shopping trip, she was nearly run down by a group of scholars. They apologized profusely and made sure that Tei'serin and her daughter were okay before continuing on their way. Tei'serin caught enough of their conversation to learn that they were talking about an extremely rare book called Words of Power. It was supposed to be about the ancient language, and it had been written by an esteemed Eidisi scholar. They had found a copy of it at Curio's Curiosities Book Shop, but the cost was more steep than they were willing to pay after buying a number of equally rare books from the shop. The information was enough to send Tei'serin looking for the other book shop instead of continuing on her way to the marketplace.

After finding the store, Tei'serin began browsing the shelves in search of the book without success. The shop keeper was an intimidating looking Ithecal, but Tei'serin wanted the book enough to work through her anxiety over approaching him or her enough to ask about it. The Ithecal introduced his or herself as Curio Xarethi when she approached. When she mentioned the title of the book she was looking for, Curio gave her a measuring look. Then the shop keeper disappeared into another room for a few bits. When they returned, Curio told her how much it would cost her. Only after she paid for it did Curio hand her the book she had asked for. Purchase made, it was time to continue on her way.

Re: Treasure Hunting

The next shop she wanted to visit was a weapons shop known as the Sphinx's Armaments, which was located near the harbor. Tei'serin had heard about the shop when she'd overheard Thorin talking to one of his men. He wanted his men to have the best weapons that money could buy, so if he was suggesting the shop to one of his men, then it must be a good place to buy weapons. As Tei'serin walked, she found herself wondering what type of weapon she should buy. She already owned a katana, so she thought getting a better one might be a good idea. She had only used it the one time when the shadow creatures had attacked back in 716, but she still knew more about katanas than she did any other type of weapon. Not that that was saying much.

Once she had found the harbor, Tei'serin simply searched until she found the shop she was looking for; it didn't take long for her to find it. Large displays of all manner of bladed weapons greeted her as she walked in, and began looking around. They were the most numerous type of weapon by far, but she did see a few bows as well. Tei'serin's eyes widened in confused dismay as she wondered where to even begin.

"Can I help you, miss? If you don't mind my saying so, you look more than a little lost." a friendly masculine voice asked.

Tei'serin jumped a little, made nervous by the man who had approached her. He was an elderly Bi'qaj, and he introduced himself as Thakrid Edwic. His age reassured her a little; men his age were less likely to be interested in the sorts of things Thorin and his men wanted from her. The fact that she was a customer offered her some protection as well.

"I'd like to buy a weapon." Tei'serin said softly.

The man laughed, making her jump again.

"Well, you've certainly come to the right place for that! My shop has plenty of weapons to offer. Maybe we can help you find one to suit your needs?"

Tei'serin gave Thakrid a hopeful look.

"I hope so."

"Are you buying something for yourself, or someone else? You don't look much like a fighter yourself..."

"I'm not. Not really. I'm an herbalist. I teach at the school in Treth as well."

"Then I have to wonder what you'd be interested in a weapon for." the owner half asked.

"Well...it's like this. There have been more than one occasion where I have found myself in a situation where I've had to fight. It doesn't happen often, but it's happened enough that I want to learn how to defend myself. There may also come a time where I have to defend my patient, too." she said, remembering a tent in a frozen land.

The man nodded.

"That sounds like a good idea to me. Knowing how to protect yourself is a very good idea indeed. So. A little bit of a thing like you isn't going to be suited to an axe, or a mace. I doubt you could even lift one much less use it. The same goes for any of our larger swords." Thakrid said as he gestured at a rack of swords.

Tei'serin eyed them warily. Even the smallest one on the display looked as though it weighed more than she did. She could only nod in agreement.

"I've used a katana once. Sort of. It was against the shadow monsters that attacked in 716."

"Hmm. Then maybe we should stick to one of those. And possibly a bokken as well?"

Tei'serin's expression must have told him that she had no idea what he was talking about, because he chuckled.

"A bokkan is a practice sword. It is the same size and shape as a katana, but it is made out of wood. That means that is lighter than a real katana. But it will help you get a feel for using a sword without the risk of cutting your own foot off by mistake."

Tei'serin nodded. That sounded like a really good idea to her.

"Do you know what kind of quality you want your sword to be?"

"What would you recommend?"

"That depends on what you want in your sword. A beginner sword would definitely suit your needs for now. But you would need to replace it as your skills begin to outgrow it. There is this to consider as well. Anyone with a superior blade is going to be able to shatter a beginner sword because it isn't going to be a good quality one. I personally would recommend a masterwork quality blade. If you get one...well, you pay for what you get when it comes to quality, and a masterwork is going to cost you. Less this trial than it would otherwise, of course because of the festival. Now. You aren't a fighter, and you aren't looking to become one. But a master quality blade is going to grow with you rather than you needing to replace your weapon as your skills improve. An average quality blade, or even a good one isn't going to do that. And as long as you don't pick a fancy one that's covered in jewels or something, the majority of people you are likely to come up against aren't going to know a quality blade when they see one. You are likely to see your run of the mill bandits, and thugs looking to steal from you. Or a thug looking to harass you or your patient. With a master quality sword you will be the one who will be breaking their blades once you have gained the skill to do so."

Tei'serin listened closely to the man's words. It was entirely possible that he was trying to sell her something that she didn't really need because it was more expensive. But his words did make sense to her. She didn't want a blade that she was going to have to replace once her skills outgrew a beginner's blade. With the way he controlled her movements, there was no guarantee that she would be able to replace her blade when she needed to. She also liked the idea of learning how to break someone's weapon...and of being able to do so because her weapon was superior. If she could destroy someone's weapon, then they couldn't keep attacking with it.

"Okay, that sounds good to me." she said softly.

Besides...she was doing this for Moseke. She wanted to do it the right way. As an herbalist, having the best quality herbs mattered. It only made sense that having the best quality sword possible would matter too.

The man walked over to a display of swords that was somewhat separate from the others. As Tei'serin watched, he selected a katana and returned to her with it.

"This is one of my best katanas." he said as he offered it for her to inspect.

To Tei'serin's untrained eye, it looked...like a sword. It might be prettier than the one she had inherited from her father, but that could just be because it was new. She would have to take the man's word on it.

"Did you want to buy a bokkan to go along with it?" he asked politely.

Tei'serin nodded. She definitely wanted to get a lot of practice in with a wooden sword before working with something that could cut her foot off or something if she made a mistake. Thakrid grinned at the prospect of another sale as he went and got one of the bokkans to go with her katana.

"That will come to one hundred and six gold nels, two silver nels, and five copper nels for both of the swords. The festival is a great time to buy things like this. It's great for sales, too."

At first Tei'serin wondered how it could be so good for sales when everything cost half of what it was usually worth. But then it became obvious; with savings like that, more people would be shopping, so if anything, shopkeepers would make more money, not less.

"Is there anything else I can help you with?"

Was there? Tei'serin wasn't certain. She wanted to ask for a lesson or two, but she didn't know if that would be an imposition. She could probably work some things out with trial and error. Tei'serin was about to thank the man and say no when she saw a display of bows. If learning one weapon was a good idea, then wouldn't learning two be even better? A bow would allow her to keep an enemy at a distance, so there would be less of a chance that she or the patient she might be protecting would get hurt. And a bow would be more useful against animals. She remembered one arc when she was a child when a rabid bear had caused havoc in the forest surrounding the village until the hunters could get together and put it out of its misery. They had used bows for that, not swords.

"Maybe a bow?" she asked hesitantly.

"Of course. We sell mostly bladed weapons, but we do also carry a number of decent quality bows. What kind would you like? We have short bows, long bows, crossbows, and pistol crossbows."

"Um..."

Thakrid chuckled.

"Let me guess. You know about as much about bows as you do about swords, right?"

"Less, actually. I have used a katana once. That's more than I can say about a bow."

"Fair enough. A short bow is great for a mounted archer, so it might not be what you are looking for. A long bow..."

The man hesitated.

"To be honest, I am not sure you could wield one of those. They are great for distance, but they are quite big. And it takes a strong arm to use it. I think a crossbow would be your best bet. That, or a pistol crossbow, but the full sized one has more power as well as more range."

"I'd like to go with a crossbow, then. And some arrows for it, please."

"You mean bolts, miss. Crossbows fire bolts instead of arrows."

Thakrid walked over to his display of bows, and selected one before coming back to where Tei'serin was standing.

"Like swords, bows can be of different quality, too. I chose this one since you decided to buy a masterwork katana. This too is a masterwork bow. But I don't know if you want one that is going to be that expensive. The crossbow is a powerful weapon, but it is also the most expensive of the bows." he cautioned.

"How much would it cost?"

"A masterwork quality bow usually goes for two hundred and forty gold nels. It being the festival and all, it would be yours for one hundred and twenty gold nels. I will throw in one hundred bolts for five gold nels. That should be enough to last you a long time if you're careful. And since you are already buying a lot from me, I would be happy to give you a lesson on how to use each weapon you buy if you come back later in the trial when it isn't so busy."

It was a steep price, but Tei'serin knew that she could afford it. And she wanted to do this right for Moseke's sake.

"I'll take it."

The man beamed at her. Tei'serin thanked him for explaining things to her as she gave him the money she owed him. They made arrangements for her to come back for her lessons, then she started to leave.

"May I make one more suggestion?"

Tei'serin turned back to the man with interest.

"You might want to consider buying some armor as well. I wouldn't recommend the heavy plate mail that soldiers wear, but some leather armor would be useful."

Once again, Tei'serin thanked the man. She asked for directions to the armor shop he suggested, then left.

Tei'serin did consider going to the armor store, but in the end she decided against it. She had spent more than she thought she would in the weapon shop, and she still wanted to buy some more livestock. And horses for her mother and her younger sisters. There was also the purchases she knew her mother was making to consider as well. Even at half price, the clothes that they all needed weren't going to come cheap.

Tei'serin met up with her family at Anuminah’s Stables and Mount Gear. Keiaris, and Meiarin were bouncing around excitedly, worked up over the fact that they were in the city, and getting all kinds of new things. Their mother watched them indulgently.

"How did the clothes shopping go?" Tei'serin asked her mother as she eyed her younger half sisters with a grin.

"Tiring. But we got a lot of the things that we needed." Dae'nira said as she offered the bags she was carrying for Tei'serin to see.

Tei'serin rummaged through the bags curiously. She found all manner of clothes; skirts, pants, shirts, nightgowns, cloaks, shoes...the sort of thing you were likely to see from someone who had to essentially replace wardrobes for three people. There were even a variety of sheets and blankets. And near the bottom, Tei'serin could see a collection of toys

"We got some things for you and Ei'ryl, too. There are swaddling clothes and diapers that she will need immediately, as well as some dresses for when she gets a bit bigger."

"Thank you, mother."

Tei'serin turned to her siblings.

"It looks like you guys have been busy." she said with a grin.

Sorin rolled his eyes good naturedly, but Keiaris and Meiarin beamed at her.

"You will be happy to know that I was able to buy a king sized bed that the girls and I can use until we have enough room for them to have a room of their own. I also bought a cradle, and a changing table for Ei'ryl."

Tei'serin's eyed widened.

"And how are we supposed to get all of that home?" she wanted to know.

Her mother chuckled.

"Don't worry about it. I was able to make arrangements for the furniture to be sent out on the next shipment of goods that goes to Treth. Our name will be attached to the order, so someone in the village will let us know when it arrives."

Tei'serin nodded, relieved that they wouldn't have to try and figure out a way to bring it all home themselves.

"Well, then, I guess that the next thing we need to do is pick out a few horses for you guys."

"Horses, yay!" Meiarin shouted excitedly.

The others grinned as her mother shushed her. Even Sorin looked happy at the thought of being able to pick out his own horse. Tei'serin found a woman who looked as though she worked there, and asked her to help them pick out some good, docile horses. The woman, who introduced herself as Anuminah, was happy to help them. Predictably, Sorin wanted a stallion, and the girls wanted mares. Tei'serin's mother didn't care what gender her horse was as long as it was steady, dependable, and well trained. After they chose their mounts, Tei'serin bought some gear for them as well. Then it was time to move on to the last stop on their trip.

When they arrived at Valfield Farms, the owner looked up from his work, and greeted them. He recognized Tei'serin, and greeted her with a grin, asking her if he had another unusual request for him this arc. She blushed a deep shade of red. It was obvious that he remembered her because of the orders he had given her the last time she had come to the farm. Tei'serin told him that she wasn't buying anything unusual, but she did want to buy four cows, and twenty chickens. They didn't have any bulls for sale, so she asked if it would be possible to breed the cows she was buying to their bull. The owner agreed readily, and added the stud fee to the total of what she wanted to buy. When he asked her if she needed any farm equipment, she hesitated. Tei'serin really didn't know as much as she should about running her own farm. It was Sorin who said that they needed a few sickles, scythes, and pitchforks. He also mentioned that having a water wagon, a horse drawn rake, a grain cart, a wooden roller, and a large wagon to bring their produce to market would be useful. Tei'serin quickly agreed to that, and added a second chicken coop, and four strawberry planters to the things she wanted to buy. When she asked what the total cost would be, the owner gave her a number that made her hesitate. But after a few trills, she handed him the money. Arrangements were made for the animals and equipment to be sent with the next shipment heading to Treth. Tei'serin asked about the possibility of attending one of the gardening classes later. Then it was time for a well deserved rest before she returned to the weapon shop for her lesson.

Re: Treasure Hunting

Wow, I don’t think I’ve ever read such an in-detail purchase thread. Your character had motivation for each one of her purchases which isn’t something I usually see. I also liked how Tei’serin used this as a chance to build on relationships and visit Moseke’s shrine. I can tell the relationship between the character and immortal is strong!
