[The Merchants Guild] Popularity? Contest.

Each of the people she had to meet before her meeting with Ilaren and the Council were very different. That was, of course, the nature of dealing with any people, but Daphne Lightsong was a very particular sort of person. Young and beautiful, apparently easy going but a shark in all ways, Faith was very pleased that she herself was both a shrewd business woman and a very good judge of character. So, as she sat opposite Daphne, Faith was well aware of just how much this was a situation which needed to be navigated. But, as always, Faith's skill in politics lay in her simple refusal to do it .

She had handed over the documents a few moments ago and Daphne was reading them currently. The young woman kept going back and forth and checking things, looking at one fact, then going to another and so on. It was partly done to actually check facts, Faith thought, and partly done to make Faith wait. She didn't mind at all, she had a cool glass of water, and she simply sat patiently. When she wasn't taking a sip of her drink, Faith sat with her hands folded in her lap and watched Daphne.

Eventually, Daphne put down the papers. "I have some concerns, of course, but I'm very keen to help you," she said. Faith gauged that as being good news. She was unsurprised that Daphne hedged her bets from the outset - depending on how things went, Daphne could say that she'd raised concerns from the outset or - if things went well - that she'd been supportive from the beginning. It was a clever ploy, in fairness. "I believe," Faith said, "That economically, this could be very good for Rharne and for the merchants of Rharne."

Daphne looked down at the papers and she seemed to come to some sort of conclusion. "I agree," she said. "And that the renowned Faith Augustin is spearheading the project will make it very popular. After the Tournament and the Tree, that momentum will keep going. I see here," she said, pointing to a particular spot on the parchment, "that you've commissioned - or plan to - glass from Scalvoris? Do you plan on outsourcing many of the resource needs?"

Faith raised an eyebrow. "Outsourcing isn't really what that is, surely?" She wouldn't get pulled in to the idea that she owed anything to this woman or that she could only source her supplies from one place. After all, Faith ran a global organisation with apparent ease . "I will purchase from those who offer the best deal for the best quality, of course. But there is something to be considered here," she said. Spreading out a map on the table between them, she pointed to the area which had been circled. "A residential area. Considering the number of staff this place will have who will live there, and the number of guests at the family residence?" It was a large number. She was, effectively, building a satellite town, she knew. "I would be very happy to include spaces in these areas, empty land which would be absolutely ideal for a business if it wished to open." Looking down at it, she considered. "And I would say that we could come to an agreement on what proportion of those I reserve for Rharnian businesses?" She smiled slightly.

Daphne looked at her and, just for a moment, the two women shared a look of absolute understanding, each one of them knowing exactly who and what the other was.

The idea of the land, and being given first pick of it, was something which Daphne was pleased with. However, there were other issues to be addressed. "It seems to me," she said - looking at the mapImage, "that the merchants from Rharne will be at a disadvantage." Faith quirked an eyebrow. "I don't see how?"

Daphne tapped the map. "Merchants from places like Desnind, Scalvoris, they'll be able to transport to the site directly. However, our merchants will not have that,"

Faith understood what Daphne was thinking -and why - but she shook her head. "Not so," she said. "My request to Saoire is to open up a portal from each of the named Order of the Adunih outposts. Each outpost - including the ones in Rharne - will have the same opportunity." Daphne nodded, pleased to hear that. "However," Faith said, aware that this was something which had to be clearly understood. "I am asking Saoire about using these portals for medical purposes. They will bring people to the hospital, they aren't about or for merchants." That was an important point as far as Faith was concerned. Daphne was not impressed with that, although she understood it.

"So, the merchants from Rharne will have far less of a journey than any other," Faith said with a smile. "Straight down the Zynx river, in fact. We're also going to be looking at maybe using the cave and tunnel system under the stormwastes, but that depends on the Institute mapping them and so on. It's a proposal I'm taking forward with him. I believe it would be very useful to the merchants here."

Daphne's mind ticked over, and Faith could see it. She shouldn't have given the woman an opening, she knew. It was a tactical mistake and it was one Daphne immediately siezed on. "I would like to be part of that," she said and Faith could see Daphne's mind ticking over, quickly. "I'd be happy to put my support behind this endeavour, either way, but I would like you to discuss with Ilaren - and all the cities concerned - that there should be some access for merchants." Faith considered it and she had to admit she didn't like the idea. Could she even try and argue for something which she saw no need for?

And then, as though sensing her weakness, Daphne stepped in with the final strike. Faith had to admire it, the woman was good at what she did. "Because I'd like to open a spa, with a focus on medicine and health, of course. Placed equidistantly between the hospital and both types of residence. This would offer a place for family members to come and unwind, to have massages, etc. We'd offer a discount to staff, of course. The building will be circular, a donut-shape around a central outdoor swimming pool, with spas and treatment rooms making up the donut shape. A small restaurant serving healthy and tasty food, and a physical fitness center next to it. I think it would be good for your staff, for your patients, and their families. Stand with me on the negotiating for merchants to have access to the portals in a sensible, limited manner, and I'll have this building built and donated to the Order."

Faith knew that she'd been manoeuvred, but it was a move which benefitted them both. Still, it was important that she didn't just roll over and show her fleshy and vulnerable parts, metaphorically speaking.

"What will we do with the profits?"

Daphne considered.

"Fifty fifty split," she said. She had considered asking for her outlay to be paid back, but then it wouldn't be a donation, would it? Faith was quiet for a moment, her hands pressing together as she looked at each of the angles here. "Deal," she said. "But I want a clear contract written up between us. No confusion later on." Daphne nodded. "That's fine, it's how I work best, anyhow. "

"Also," Daphne said, obviously much happier. "I want to be kept informed of the mapping of the tunnels. There may be all sorts of opportunities from that, and I'd like to be kept abreast of the situation."

Faith had no objection to that, at all. "I will be giving a full report to Ilaren and Saoire," she said, "including what is agreed and discussed in each meeting." Including this one, of course. Daphne nodded. "I'd expect no less, in fairness. Everyone needs to be kept informed."

With a smile, Faith stood and held out her hand. "It's been a pleasure, Daphne. Thank you, as always." Daphne shook her hand and gave a genuinely good-humoured smile. "You're very welcome. It's rare I get to feel like I've worked for my pay these trials. I feel it today. Thank you."

Faith gave a low chuckle. "I feel just the same."

Comments: I read Daphne Lightsong’s writeup, and I have to say that you play her very well. She really does give me the impression of being a shrewd businesswoman who is prepared for everything.

I’m impressed by how Faith addressed Daphne's statements regarding outsourcing and Rharnian merchants supposedly being at a disadvantage – and that you had her made a tactical mistake.

Considering Faith’s skills, this could have gone completely smoothly. I like that you gave Faith a challenge regardless. A spa that focuses on medicine and health sounds interesting, so I look forward to seeing it – and the rest of Faith’s hospital – taking shape!

I smiled a little when I reached the end of the thread – both Faith and Daphne came to the conclusion that they had worked for their pay. I’m glad that they finished their meeting on such a positive note!

Enjoy your rewards!
