Ymiden 80th, 718 - Trial 5 of the Journey to Volta - Midday

Image

Auya leaned back against the wooden panel of the wagon she sat upon, finding it notably uncomfortable. But redheads didn't get a choice in the matter. While most everyone else had laid claim to various seats for the entirety of the journey, Auya had been relegated to the back of the bus. Varlum's presence had at least forced the caravan drivers to let her ride with them, albeit quite reluctantly. At least the view was nice. They were in the farmland between Mistral Wood and Zynyx Market. And it was the height of growing season, with the sun high over head, the second sun peeking out over the horizon.

Soon the horn rang out and the large train of wagons came to a stop. It was time for the midday break, to give the animals a chance to rest and be fed and watered. There was a bend in the river where they stopped. She raised the brim of her straw hat to get a better look at the shallow river. While she wasn't affected by the heat like others were, a cooling dip seemed like a decent time. She slipped off the wagon, looking over as people gathered around the meal cart. She didn't bother, she was always served last, given the smallest portion or the least desirable. She just hoped there wasn't any mold this time like last night's dinner.

Auya hadn't spotted Varlum or Leeson yet, but it was a large load of people. She made her way along the sheep trimmed grass watching as children ran screaming for the river. She made her way there slowly, enjoying stretching out her legs after the long half-trial ride. Someone shoved into the back of her, sending her sprawling forward onto her hands and knees. She cried out in pain as a boot stepped on her hand. She looked up, tears in her blackened eyes, as a rough sort of man, a salt miner, stomped toward the river without even looking back at her. She stood up, clutching her hand to her chest as she got closer to the water, avoiding everyone, being way down on one end.

She began to unlace her sandals, her injured hand shaking, and pulled them off. When all this started, she thought she was strong enough, clever enough to pretend to be the victim, to garner sympathy. But the violence never stopped, and now she truly was that which she was pretending to be. A victim. On her rock, she lowered her hat over her face, clutching her knees, and cried and cried into her linen skirt. She wasn't strong enough to endure this abuse for Faldrun. She never realized how hard this was to just survive another trial, let alone be of use to him. She was weak, useless. A victim. She hated Rharne. She hated Ilaren. She hated her dead husband and her lying father. She hated herself.

She raised her head, looking over the deeper part of the river, thinking how if she were to disappear into the waters, no one would notice, and even less would care. She was alone in this horrible place. She had never been alone before she came to Rharne two arcs ago. At first she enjoyed it, feeling independent, strong, and liked. But these days, it was lonely and painful. She believed in this mission, but she wasn't strong enough for it. Faldrun had picked the wrong woman for the job.

She picked up a fist sized rock and heaved it with a scream into the water, trying to let out some anger. It didn't help, and it did startle some of the nearest children, who were now playing a bit closer to their parents, away from the wicked redhead. Finally, taking a deep breath, she got up. tucked the bottom of her skirt into her waist, and stepped into the shallow water. This was nice. She watched the little fish passing by, and noticed a bunch of rocks in the river. Maybe she could find a souvenir for herself here. Her dead husband had brought her rocks when he was courting her. She always liked them. If she could find something nice perhaps. And so she crept through the shallows, looking for other rocks, her sandals in one hand, dangling over her shoulder alongside her waist lengthed hair.

"Country rooooooaaaad, take me hooooooooooome..." Leeson sang, dismounting from the caravan. "To the plaaaaace... I beloooooooooooooooooooong!"

He jumped down, in oddly high spirits. Maybe it was just the fact that he hadn't been outside Rharne since he had arrived. The fresh air, the new sights, the new people (although slightly intimidating) were all exactly what he needed. The caravan had been parked for quite some time, but only recently had Leeson awoken from his summertime nap. He sprung up from the caravan, grabbing his satchel with Kepler inside once his feet were planted squarely on the ground.

"Rharne, Ilaren! Mountain mamaaaaaaaaaa..." He sang, walking towards the river, a jaunt in his step. "Take me hooooooooome, country roooooooaads..."

Quickly, Leeson found himself a nice strawberry bush, ripe for picking this time of the arc. He found a nice plump one, grabbed it, and made his way over to the river. Releasing Kepler in the shallows, trusting him to bathe himself, Leeson continued humming the tune and taking in his surroundings.

The area was nice. It was small, it was sweet. There was a village nearby, and its inhabitants seemed to be having as lively a day as Leeson was. Near him, to his left, a little further down the river was Auya. He hadn't spoken to her yet, or made much of an impression at all, but she seemed a sweet enough gal. He had more or less learned his lesson about redheaded strangers that seem nice enough from Vega, however.

As Kepler moved about the shallows, Leeson fed him bits of the strawberry. A nicer trial wasn't had by Leeson in quite some time.

Finally, those fucking horns.

Varlum very much liked Leeson. Since the day that the two had met he felt nothing but care for the man, it had to be said. Both were friends in a way that very few would expect of two totally different men. One was a charismatic, smaller man that wished to live a peaceful life and avoid conflict at any turn. The other was a soldier, a man working for the military of Rharne, capable of biting off limbs and removing heads with near-ease. Yet the two maintained a good friendship.
But if the young man was determined to keep singing, the head removal might become necessary to Varlum's wellbeing. It wasn't as if the Ithecal was against fun, far from it. But they evidently had different ideas of fun from one another. However, the man didn't mind so much as to what happened now, or what Leeson sung. So long as he got this break, and so close to a river too. Varlum could at least wash himself off a little, talk to some people. Perhaps make some new acquaintances. Then again, not many people wanted to talk to the giant of a man.

As Varlum walked to the river, he glanced to a group of smaller children playing and smiled, deciding to leave Leeson to his own devices for the time being. As he glanced around men and women of all shapes and sizes parted for him. Perhaps it was the axe on his back, perhaps it was his sheer size or perhaps it was the scar on his eye. Perhaps, he considered, all three played a factor. If a nine-foot-tall Ithecal didn't terrify people, one that looked as battle-hardened as him would definitely do the trick.
Suddenly, the man glanced back, hearing a scream of frustration. As the children parted for the scream they moved past Varlum, some almost using him to block out the sight of whatever had screamed - or whoever. It didn't take the Ithecal long to recognize the woman, and it didn't take much to see that anger and pain seemed to run down her face. Varlum felt his jaw clench tight, his fangs on show as a low hiss left his mouth. Now that made the children scatter.

Slowly and carefully, the Ithecal made his way to a small rock near the water, placing his axe on the bank of the river and sliding his shirt off, lowering them down to where they would stay dry. "Something wrong, girl?" he asked in his usual, low snarl. If any of the men had considered coming near her now, they were definitely reconsidering as the Ithecal let himself go in the water, caring little for how dry his trousers were. It was warm enough that he would survive.
The towering man let himself sit on the edge of the bank, the warm water covering up to his waist as he looked at the red-headed girl with a look of sympathy and care. "There's no harm in talking to me about it, if you feel it will help" he said and kept his eyes on her, the scar on his face evident from the angle she had on him. "What happened to your hand?"

Noticing what she was looking for, Varlum glanced down and saw a pretty stone that he thought she might like. Carefully, he picked it up, holding it out in his palm to show to her as an offering - not saying any more until she spoke of her concerns. That, or dismissed them.

Re: Rock Hunting

Auya felt Varlum lumbering toward her before she heard him speak. That brought a smile hint of a smile to her face. He was a good man, even if he was so big and heavy and scary looking. To most. The scarier he seemed to others, the nicer he seemed to her. He'd taken an interest in her, and her plight. And she appreciated it. Even if she sometimes lost sight of that during her outbursts. She smiled broader as he called her girl. Some people might find that offensive, but she found it endearing. Likening it to maybe he could only just barely tell humans, or human like species apart, by gender.

She watched as he entered the river and plucked a stone out, handing it to her. Just as her husband used to do. At least while he was courting her. He brought her many pretty stones he found in the mines, or supposedly had found. She never learned how much of his life was a truth or a lie. But surely she couldn't be cursed with two lying scumbags offering her pretty stones, right? She accepted the stone with a proper smile, and a headnod of thanks.

Then she looked past Varlum, at the salt miner, that was sitting there resting his weary feet in the waters, face covered by his hat as he napped. She nodded at him, "Tall, dark, and dirty there shoved me over, then stepped on my hand." She held her hand up, showing the heavy red imprint, and how it shook. She couldn't hold it steady in the moment. "I don't really mind the shoving... But my job is my hands. Both jobs. If I can't work with my hands, I might as well just be dead."

Then she remembered who she was talking too, reaching out to touch his arm, "Don't do nothin' Varlum. Please. Probably just an accident. Suns in his eyes and such. It's a nice trial, yes? Maybe we can just enjoy it. I don't think nothin's broken. I've had worse."

She grabbed him by the arm, tugging away from the man's direction further down the river away from people, knowing she could never actually force him to move. He was a mountain of muscle after all. "My husband used to give me pretty rocks too ya know? When he was courting me. I worked in my father's smithy, I was his only child, his only apprentice. My husband was an ore supplier, bringing by regular shipments. Every so often, he'd leave a special rock just for me." Her face dropped into a frown, "That stopped after we married though. It was nice getting another one. Thank you."

She looked past Varlum to see his friend playing in the water with his turtle. "How do you him? What was his name again. Lester? Leeslie? He seems a bit strange, though we've not actually spoken yet."
