13th of Ymiden, Arc 718

"Bolster is..." Alistair trailed off, uncertain of what the ability - or spell - was, though he knew it was a technique labeled as the tool of a competent Transmuter.

"A spell," Damien started, staring apprehensively at the other mage.

"A spell... and?" Alistair questioned.

"One that reinforces the reality of an object with ether, essentially adding a dense outer layer to it. Think almost like Abrogation, except... without replicated layers of reality, material or air, but instead a dense shell of ether itself. Like so," he demonstrated, holding up a sheet of parchment drawn from Alistair's mahogany desk, beckoning him with a twitch of his fingers to attempt to... rip it, Alistair presumed.

The mage took the sheet into his palms and pulled on the paper, holding one side with a curve above the other, peeling down the center in an attempt to rip it cleanly in half. It was... certainly far more difficult than with other parchment. Though as he focused his pure muscular force into the tearing, the paper did slowly and hesitantly rip - Bolstering was certainly a strong reinforcement, but it was not impervious.

"Wow," Damien responded. "I sometimes forget how strong you are. Never had anyone manage to rip the sheet before, without resorting to magic or foul play."

The mage rose his arms up and flexed, playfully. Then, the two of them proceeded forward into the discussion - Damien's... educational section. Alistair stared quietly as he explained how it fully worked.

"You implant ether to it as a layer, regardless of how you shape it. A sheath, a sleeve, a frontal barrier - it doesn't matter. The more area you cover, the more ether you may need to expend. This is what I like to call a persistent ability - it remains for as long as you desire, but equally, it drains your ether for as long as it remains. If you wish to have truly impervious armor, you may Bolster it for an extended period of time - but eventually, that will drain on you. It's better, I think, to do it when you need to do it - as a reaction. For true extended defenses, Abrogation is considerably better," he stated.

But that made sense. Protection was the purpose of Abrogation. Transmutation, on the other hand, had many purposes. Fractures, ethereal mastery, enchanting, absorbing, harnessing ether to carve, craft and rend; an artificer's tool or a weapon. To add bolstering to the list was only impressive - it was certainly a useful tool for what he had already begun to consider the most diverse of the magics.

"Try. It's not altogether complex - focus your ether, harness it, make it dense. Focus on, almost, the quality of thickness and durability." Damien instructed him, and Alistair nodded. He wasn't entirely certain as to how to envision it, mentally. Alistair attempted to picture the layer of bolstered ether - he saw it as a blue layer with indigo tints, swimming in an ocean of gradient and color. That layer sat around the handle of his spear almost like a sleeve. But was it fair to call it an outer layer, or a reinforcement within the very materials of the object?

That was his uncertainty - and he supposed he could only try, in order to find out.

His first attempt was an outer layer, an ethereal blue sheath around an object that was - perhaps - even visible at times, depending on the shape and make of said object. Focusing on the handle of the wooden "spear" he'd sculpted from tree bark, the mage attempted to impart that same sleeve of ether, bolstering its defenses. In truth, however, the external nature of this technique confused itself with something separate - corrosion, or sculpting, or something entirely else; the harnessing of ether, visible, for a much more blatant demonstration. Though he did manage to make a sheath around the spear that was visible, it quickly melted through it, corroding the material unintentionally.

Alistair raised a brow, unable to even scowl. Had he . . . really just mixed up corrosion for Bolstering, or was it something different? In his mind, he created that ether as... something like a flat canvas. Then, he imparted a nature to the ether with his will, seeking to make it embolden and protect the wood with a new 'fold', on Abrogator's terms. Instead, the layer seeped through and pulled back, marring much of the experimental section on the wooden object. Alistair bit his lower lip, in thought.

"Was that intentional?" Damien asked.

"No," the mage simply replied. Perhaps the blatant, external nature of the ether did --

"Oh," his brows rose. "I think, perhaps, I created something of a... unintentional Ether Missile? I pictured drawing the ether to myself, perhaps around my hands and wrists, giving it force and energy - then transferring or exchanging it to the spear to make its effect. It immediately began to corrode it upon exchanging hands, and... I don't know."

"That's possible," the Lich replied. "But unlikely. The ether missile - see it more like a javelin. A bright, crackling spark of ether, propelled at an enemy by a magically charged kinetic force. You saw it a few times in action by Lord Amielle, correct?" Damien asked. The mage nodded.

"Then, do it like that. But, one step at a time. We can learn all about the missile later - for now, we still uphold the task of Bolstering. Please try again - and go with your... other assumption. I could tell there were two; your brows had that hesitant quirk as you put the latter one to the test."

The mage smiled, faintly. Damien was a perceptive man, though he'd always known that. He supposed being a century old undead provided one with the necessary patience for observance.

Regardless, he tried - as asked of him - the second attempt at structuring his ether into a defense. This time, he would attempt an internal reinforcement... no, it wasn't a matter of internal or external. He lowered his gaze - he'd been thinking of it the wrong way. It was a reinforcement of every fragment, bit and fiber, an intrinsic aspect of the object in question - if only for that brief moment. A weave built into the frame. It was bolstering that object, and that object's materials. Not... sheathing, or layering, or shielding. The title made sense.

So, knowing this, he attempted once more to create a bolstered spear. He weaved ether into the fundaments of the object, making what appeared to be no clear physical difference, a sight unseen. Then, focusing his will and intent, he sought for the other to reinforce the object's durability... and followed his attempt with a swift descent of his closed fist, attempting to break through the spear in a single pummel. The consequence would, of course, be splinters running through his fist - the price of failure.

Fortunately, he succeeded, and his fists almost rebounded from the object that was now... considerably more difficult to penetrate. Nodding, Alistair's eyes rose back to the Lich, as Damien nodded back.

"Good. That's your... fourth ability, correct? Identity, Corrosion, Sculpting and now... Bolstering," he stated, considering them. Alistair stared quietly, parting his lips to speak.

"Brilliance," he replied.

"Ah, right. Five, then," Damien whispered back. It was good progress. Only... seven to go, unless he Revealed. Though, of course, Damien did not expect him to. Alistair had already made his intention not to very clear.

After what appeared to be mastering Bolstering, the two took a seat on the dining-table like bench seated outside of the red-roofed building of Kaelserad. Pertinently, they discussed the more intricate details of Transmutation, and Alistair's current progress in said field. Damien meted out criticisms and words of encouragement - the criticisms were, of course, mainly focused on the mage's incessant ability to be... visible, and perhaps flashy with the magic. In truth, Transmutation was perhaps the most subtle of his three sparks. It did not have the overwhelming magical effects of Dustforge, nor the explosive, often offensive ripping and clapping sounds of Rupturing as it tore through space. It didn't have the scent of death or the stillness of a Revenant . . . nor the green, scarring force of Withering.

Transmutation was quiet, producing - at best - the buzzing hum of ether, as Alistair described it, upon a mage's ears. It was not a loud, flashy and blatant thing at all. There were exceptions, such as Ether Missile and to an extent, Brilliance, but other than that . . .

Regardless, the two moved onto the positives. As always, Alistair's ability to quickly and concisely understand magical spells was bar none. He learned and developed his talents quickly, falling prey to no other in sheer ethereal capability. Damien expressed the opinion that, in terms of raw magical and mechanical ability, he believed Alistair to have surpassed Ellasin - or to at least have met her. Soon, he would be a great Transmuter on top of what other disciplines he had already mastered, to their fullest extent. With Absorption, he would be a great magical duelist. With his Revenants, his overwhelming tactics and coordination with he and his collection of exceptionally talented warriors would be... very lethal. And with Rupturing, his utility and mobility, as well as his ability to evade great onslaughts would provide him with all that he needed to defeat her. Even with an Anaxus at her side, he could rend her body in trills, and with their tether... he could find her phylactery.

In truth, the two of them believed that the time would soon come when magic - and its stagnant order of hierarchy - would change. Alistair would surpass Ellasin's role, transmogrifying the political landscape of mages. Damien felt this way, and perhaps if he could be arrogant for a moment - Alistair did too. He had devoted his whole life, especially after losing Fridgar... to becoming that man. To being their leader, and overthrowing the Queen. The Necromantress.

And he would keep going, cautiously yet quickly, unto that fate. With yet another ability to call his own.

Trial and error! I'd say he'd probably still have broken the stick if he tore the paper, but it wasn't a huge deal. Damien is pretty useful, and the magical concepts were pretty straight forward and easy to read. I think I don't like ability names because it sounds so much like Pokémon moves haha.
