26th Vhalar, 716th Arc
Trouble haunted the city of Ne'haer. The smoldering remains of the city blazed in the last light of the dual suns as dusk approached. Every day the citizens worked from dawn until dusk to carry out repairs. Homes were rebuilt left and right, but much of the city's former glory had vanished along with the shadow creatures. While the shadow retreated, another slumbering threat stepped forth and took its place. The spectre had returned.

Just that morning the desecrated body of a girl had been found near the docks, her limbs twisted and splayed into an unnatural position, coated in sickly blue-ish, rotting skin that started to peel off. Her head had been replaced by that of a pig with gouged eyes, stitched onto her torso with rough, fraying wire. She would've been unrecognizable if not for the necklace dangling around her neck. Gwynnen Qua'toraj, daughter of Khar Qua'toraj and Elwa had only made it into her thirteenth arc before she'd met her cruel end.

By midday, all the bounty boards in the city had a large, fresh poster pinned to them. A drawing of a wild-eyed looking man with dark, unkempt hair and a lice-infested, scraggly beard of the same color was labeled thusly:

Travis Seymour - Dead or Alive.
For the reward of 400 (four hundred) goldens Nels, the city of Ne'Haer hereby calls upon all those of brave heart and mind to hunt down, restrain, and/or kill the criminal Travis Seymour for the atrocious crimes of manslaughter, abduction and desecration that he has bestowed upon our most vulnerable citizens.

Be forewarned: Mr. Seymour is a highly dangerous individual. Any and all means resulting in his death or capture are permitted and worthy of aforementioned reward.
Those who read the fine print that followed would know to attend a briefing in the great Judgement Hall at dusk on the same day.
A handful of people of various creeds and races had assembled in the splendor of the Judgement Hall, murmuring amongst themselves, or awaiting further instruction with crossed arms. Among them was a diminutive but fierce looking Biqaj in her early twenties with blazing eyes carrying a wicked, curved blade upon her back. Next to her stood a tall human with long hair tied into a ponytail and a large, gleaming dagger strapped to his belt. A small group of three humans, armed to the teeth stood a little further to the side. It was clear from their fine, but ragtag equipment that these were experienced bounty hunters, looking for a good pay.

After half a dozen bits of waiting the captain Ziri of the Willow Woods Outpost emerged from a room to the side and motioned for all interested folk to enter.

While significantly smaller than the main hall, the room was still large enough to host two dozen people at once. A large wooden table of simple make stood in the center and was surrounded by empty chairs, save for two at the head of the table. Upon one sat a fair woman into her thirties with a sharp chin and strong jaw, upon the other sat a dark-haired boy who trained his eyes solely upon the ground.

"Please, be seated," Ziri said in his deep, soothing voice as he motioned for all attendees to take place.

After they had done so, Ziri stepped over to the woman and the boy and rested a large hand upon the shoulder of the latter.

"My name is Ziri, I am the Captain of the Willow Woods Outpost. I've been assigned to instruct all interested parties about Mister Seymour. This here," he gestured towards the woman, "is Nabarra Lapotre, she is with the outpost as well, as is young Rafael here." Despite the brief silence that followed, the boy did not look up, and so Ziri simply soldiered on.

"You've all come here for the bounty on Travis Seymour's wretched head, but not all of you may wish to stay. The man is a well-known criminal and has already escaped his death-sentence twice. For that reason, the city would much rather have him dead than alive. We know few things about the man, except that he is fond of poisoning his victims and replacing their heads with those of animals, mostly pigs."

Ziri's face turned grim as he mentioned the more gruesome details. "He always targets children, and always returns the maimed bodies to within the city premises. We don't know why, nor if he acts alone. This morning, a girl named Gwynnen was found near the docks. Rafael, perhaps you can tell us a bit more about how you found her?" The Captain's dark eyes settled on the boy who, for the first time, stirred and looked up, his face gaunt and his eyes focused on some distant point. OOC: Welcome to this exciting bounty thread! Below are a few rules in order to ensure the best possible experience for all:
  • First and foremost, all default ST rules apply.
  • There will be a posting order, except for the first round. The first round is free. After that, the same order of posts will be maintained.
  • Thread speed will be fairly high: I'll post every 2 days.
  • I'll seperate my own posts into NPC ones (like this one), and ones from Rafael's point of view. I'll use different boxcodes, so you will be able to distinguish them easily.
  • Please do not NPC the following characters (even though you're technically allowed to): Ziri, Nabarra, the (male) human bounty hunter, the Bijaq (female) bounty hunter, the three human mercenaries. I'll be using all of these characters in the plot! If at all possible, just stick to your own character :)
  • This thread is tagged as mature for gore/violence reasons. Don't say I didn't warn you!
  • This bounty is high-risk, your character may very well get injured/maimed. Please play along and be reasonable in how much damage your character can take! Should your character do something that could lead to severe injury, I'll bring in a mod to make sure it's handled correctly.
  • Have fun and be nice to each other...or just run rampant and take the bounty for your greedy little self :P

Rafael let his gaze slide across those in attendance. Mercenaries, bounty hunters, gamblers, strange folk all around. The only familiar face at the table was that of Symbri, the slightly insane dancing girl. His ashen gaze lingered on her for a moment before averting to the side.

"I was out early," he spoke softly and shifted constantly in his seat, "about to go back to the outpost when I remembered to pick up something from Captain Oxworth. The dried meat," he glanced up at Ziri who nodded in return and beckoned Rafael to continue. "Along the way, I saw a shadow in the corner of my eye, but when I looked to the side, there was nothing there."

Cocking his head to the side, Rafael glanced to the ceiling for a trill and sifted through his memories. "I met with the captain was carrying the crate back when I found her, laying amid a stack of goods that was about to be taken aboard. At first I thought she was some passed out drunk but then-" He swallowed hard, "then I saw her mangled bones and her head...she held her head in her own arms and bore that of a pig upon her own neck."

A thick lump entered his throat and he couldn't bring himself to speak another word as he slumped back in his seat, waiting to see just how many fools would still endeavor to find Travis Seymour after they'd heard all about the state he left his victims in.

There were all sorts of monsters in the world, the worst of them tend to wear human skin though. Perhaps it was arrogant to think that she was strong enough to take out criminals and monsters alike and yet, it was something she felt needed to do, she wanted to help people that deserved to be helped, and children were certainly people worth protecting, there were no bad children, bad parents and bad influences but children were for the most part, redeemable, more so than the monsters who preyed on them. the very thought made her blood boil.

Thusly Raf's tail only served to further make her angry, it was sickening that such a man could exist and all the more sickening to think of families burying such mutilated corpses. So she'd stand with whoever was willing to fight alongside her, money be damned she wanted this monsters head. she didn't have much to say so she didn't add on, she'd be going and that was that, to say anything would only reveal that she was in it for her emotions not the money and she didn't need that known. So she'd stay tight lipped and wait until it was time for the kill.

Shrugging her shoulders the girl fiddled with her armor until something was decided, she wasn't sure how the were going to go about catching the man, she was above using bait, but perhaps the man had haunts that were known or rumored. if it came down to it she had enough connections in taverns that getting a rumor would at the very least be doable. She just needed to know where to start. there were enough orphans about that such a predator wouldn't be able to rest, wich was all the more reason to strike while the Iron was hot.

The Judgement Hall. For the few trials which Nauta had been in Ne'haer, it unnerved him that he frequented the Hall as much as he did especially when its purpose was not hard to figure out. He may not be a criminal, at least by his own personal principles, but he still could not help but think it might be some sort of a premonition for things to come. However if he did the good society expected, perhaps he might be able to avoid an undesirable future. Reluctant to help with the efforts to rebuild a city he had no attachment to, Nauta's aim to do good was of course limited.

At first he had thought the buzz was of shadows, spectre pretty much held the same meaning for the Aukari which still had to improve his common. Until he was shown the posters on the bounty board, he was of the belief shadows remained in the city and, to eradicate them something simple enough to assist with as eliminated plenty of them after he joined the campaign against their masters. It sickened him that the creatures lacked any grace in their defeat, if the marring of the poor girl bore any truth.

Unfortunately, it was worse than he had thought as the spectre was no shadow; but a person even if his visage was akin to some wild beast. The former guard was unable to compare the heinous crime to any he dealt with in Sirothelle. The description of Seymour's past crimes sickened Nauta to the point he had to return back to his temporary residence. Even after Faldrun's attack on the city, Nauta doubted he would face any of the same persecution he would have to deal with back in Etzos, if he had erupted in the middle of the street because of Seymour's grotesque work in his mind.

But no matter the reason, any eruption in the streets of a city which was still being rebuilt, especially by someone similar to its attackers would be a bad idea. He remained in his hired room, the recollection of those guilty scum he had arrested in Sirothelle used to reassure him the perpetrator of this most heinous crime will be caught. Even a world constantly threatened by beings which only existed to destroy, Faldrun and the shadows included had to have a limit to its bleakness. Or at least that was the truth Nauta had to believe in to get through each trial.

That was the truth Nauta used to fight the tension which grew within him. It was only after he calmed and reinforced himself mentally to face the next task that he departed for the Hall, which had him barely make it in time. Travis Seymour had to be off the street even if he might end up lost in the attempt- actually- no. The possibility of Nauta lost in the attempt was nowhere in the reflections he used to prepare himself for the hunt. That possibility which skirted his thoughts brought him to the edge of erupting in the streets again.

Nauta struggled to calm himself until the opportunity came for some questions. His quiet reflections got him to think about his old cases and, with barely any time in Ne'haer to know much about Seymour or his crimes, he knew he had to ask even if he would look like an idiot. The details were needed especially if Seymour proved beyond his own capabilities.

First, "you say he escaped twice. He can't do this unarmed and alone or you need an Immortal or army, not us." At the very least Nauta felt any narrative of Seymour's escape, if there were witnesses, would give the group some measure of the criminal's capabilities. The monster's capabilities was also important for Nauta's second question, on a craft he learned when "you also say poisons. You know what? Plant? Animal? Metal? How does he... poison the kids? Feed? Air? Poke?" For Nauta, every detail he could get out of Ziri would help narrow down further any preparations which might be needed.

Or if the authorities had not thought of these things, "you still keep things two times, right?" which he meant the times Seymour was captured. Nauta may prefer to not use poisons which were deadly but that did not mean he was not aware of the common practices of those which practised the craft and allowed the possibility of "Seymour's old things you've...taken may have poison, or antidote for us to check." If not 'us' then Nauta himself, provided he could gain access to the proper facilities to study them.

However all of the information he asked for, even if provided, would be useless if they could not find the man. He had some ideas to track Seymour's location, but the poisons were the problem he wanted out of the way. Unless specifically asked for his opinion the former guard would not even get into the topic of the local pig farms, or the places the bodies were found as those were obvious enough and would determine the competence of the Ne'haer authorities and, if this hunt for Seymour was a fools errand doomed to fail.

Adam had leaned against the wall with his arms folded, contemplating what he was being told. It didn't phase him emotionally like it did to others, he was here on business. Nabarra business, specifically but the biqak seemed to have caught his interest with all them daggers his mind wandering around the thin line of sticking it to her before she stuck it to him. Although the only thing that could ruin his fun was the kid.

Adam knew what to do with Rafael as he raised his hand.

"Do you think we will need to bait him out of hiding? I think we could put Raf here in something dandy, and parade him around the outskirts of town under surveillance. Clearly if he's after little boys the very sight of him alone and vulnerable should be irresistible.
And should he go for the bait granted if Raf has the goods, we can spring the trap murder him good in the alley and I can go spend my earnings on Nabarra.

If you want to do it the easy way that is, I guess if not we can follow him on his terms and die like miserable roaches."

It made sense to try and coax him out of hiding by seducing him to do so with the very thing he was stalking the night for. Adam was serious his tone also, to him using seduction was a sound strategy make the killer move where they wanted him to go and not follow seymor down the rabbit hole of certain demise. It also had a certain appeal as it was subtly an attempt to humiliate the kid in one fluid go the power of seduction was not something to be trifled with.

► Show Spoiler
In the end, Rafael was still a child in the eyes of those gathered and Adam's suggestion was quickly shot down by those of the outpost. While Nauta agreed that guards should be reliable to those under their protection, he also agreed with Adam that "we need bait. This man already escaped twice and you can't find him" should be a good enough reason for it. However, "we're not going to force the boy. Better to get a volunteer" who would have less of a reason to betray their plan if he became as terrified as Rafael was. Unfortunately there were not many choices for the group, with the Aukari's eyes quickly jumping between the two which qualified for Seymour's... tastes...

Obviously at least one of them was not comfortable with the idea and Nauta suggested "we should leave it for later. We still need to know what this man can do" which was a question which remained unanswered. Ziri who seemed as frustrated as Rafael was terrified with Adam's previous suggestion, despite the support of the other mercenaries who were attracted by the idea of an easier way agreed, if only to avoid the discussion from coming to a halt because of the distasteful suggestion.

As for how the man escaped so many times despite the death sentence which hung over him, or how he could remain hidden for so long from Ne'haer's authorities, the captain could not say except for some speculations like magic. She would not believe there would be a traitor which would assist a monster like Seymour among the guards, nor could she think there would be any other criminals vile enough to assist someone which such a high profile. This left Ziri with only two other ideas, magic and divine intervention. Both which would make their task a lot harder.

With that revelation, it seemed some of the mercenaries were unhappy and voiced out the job as being too difficult, not something they had signed on for. The captain gave the group a few bits to express their concerns and made it clear they were not forced to stay for the job if they did not believe they could handle it. Only one took the offer while the rest grumbled about being professionals, the reason they would not leave yet. Unable to tell what the others thought, Nauta decided he needed to reassess the worth of this task for himself at least.

Perhaps the group's chance was with Symbri who had more than proven herself in Oscillus but she had been quiet so far. Nevertheless once the chance returned to Ziri, the captain went on to address the other question Nauta asked about. With some of the items missing after Seymour's escape, the only information they had about Seymour's poisons were pieced together reports by some investigators, although Ziri assured the group she would have more prepared given time. After a quick conversation with her subordinate, Nabarra, the other woman left for the outpost for some reason which was not even shared with the group.

The group still had more important things to discuss and could not afford any other distractions.

Sure they were quick to dismiss Adam and Adam was quick to try and leave but then it dawned on him if he coped out and bailed he'd be giving up that sweet outpost tang so he stopped and turned to reassess the situation.

They were quick to throw out his seductively easier bait idea. But he had alternatives of equal match swine like Adam always had there hoggar on the mind more accurately he was in quiet contemplation trying to figure out how he was going to launch his arrow at nabaras keyhole, there's a thought though the hog. He seemed even more inquisitive about that like he had something cranking in the gears of his psyche. Not everyone had pigs, he had to have access to ingredients for poisons also.

Hey, who around has pigs? I mean farms butcher shops, did anyone buy a pigs head or have access to obtain one. I mean how many murders we talking that had pigs heads involved? Last time I checked those don't fall from trees!

Adam was drawn to Nautas statement.

Yea the poisons involved what is he using? And where is he getting it? maybe if he's talented as they say he is he is making it himself. If we know the ingredients we know what to look for and where to lay in wait outside the city limits.

It doesn't matter if someone wants to try and work the street with there candy ass to catch this wack jobs eye, what we need is to know where he's going to repeat what he's doing. That's how we ambush him!

It sounded like Adam cared as he invested more ideas into the fray, and he did in a way but he was more interested in sounding the part to impress Nabara enough to get closer to her as he schemed a way to sleep with her which was clearly the most vital step in all of this. Afterall Hero gets the girl, if he played the part she might play with him.

If we catch him then what? Im certain with the death sentence looming over him, it should be agreed that we carry out the sentence on the spot. Unless we like the idea of doing this over again, if you ask me three strikes and your out.

Figured it was best to get this out of the way, it didn't seem like a good idea to catch the guy and disagree about what to with him long enough for the guy to escape or kill someone.

The brief was obviously a failure as none of the mercenaries gathered were compatible with one another. There were those who wanted to effectively take over the discussions and the group, there were those only interested in excuses for why they could not risk themselves to capture Seymour and then, there were those which Nauta assumed were too afraid of the man to even consider themselves as part of the group of hunters- not that the aukari could blame the young Rafael and Symbri for their reluctance. They might very well be Seymour's next victims. It was a lost cause, one which the aukari had no issue leaving behind as he believed there were people more qualified to take up the task. Perhaps Ziri would have better luck with the next group she gathered.

"Or not..." Nauta thought when he was held back to watch everyone else leave.

There was nothing physical to keep him there nor were there any thread of imprisonment or whatever the captain could inflict on him if she wanted to, thank the Immortals for that. The aukari was quite familiar with people in high positions who allowed their power to go to their head, to trouble anyone they believed was beneath them just to prove they could regardless of whether or not the code which empowered them allowed them to or, basic human decency. Fortunately such people were an anomaly. Accidents and freak events. Nothing he would wish upon even an enemy as they would cause nothing but unnecessary grief. Still, he was curious as "I thought we done with discussion. What you need from me?"

Apparently it was Nauta's knowledge of poisons the captain wanted; he regretted he hinted anything about it if he knew this was what would happen. He could not fault her though, a fresh set of eyes was a good idea but as far as he knew, "no evidence, no sign. What do you want me to see?" It was the one thing Nabarra was sent to retrieve, a report on the cases of Seymour. There was a pause as Ziri held the report towards Nauta and he watched her for a few thrills before he finally relented with a sigh but, "no promises. I can check but I not going after Seymour alone. You don't even have group!" It was while he flipped through the pages he finally asked without looking up, "how much for doing this?" but eventually he admitted "its just a joke."

The captain was not amused.

Whoever it was who prepared the report did a good job and Nauta felt he could learn something from it. It was well structured and to the point with him able to find whatever he needed about Seymour. For those things he could not understand, there was always Nabarra beside him to interpret it for him. With a few drawings of the chil- victims, how they were found with the modifications to their body, Nauta felt sick like he was about to erupt. He sat as he thought how such a monster was still out there and counted himself fortunate he was not tasked to hunt the man down. He dealt with plenty of the Immortals' enemies in Oscillus, Shadows of all sorts which fell to his blade but at least none of those were as depraved as Seymour.

Ziri and Nabarra's concern were obviously not with him when they asked about his findings and it was quite familiar. The way their bodies were stiffened, even the heads which showed no sign of any reaction to what the victims were put through, were good enough a clue. Poison was used to kidnap the children alright but it was not one which would put them to sleep. That would have been shown as discomfort in their face eventually and it would not be reliable to ensure the victims could interrupt the man's work. "Paralysis poison..." he finally said and after thinking it through with the accounts of Rafael and those on record narrowed it down to "Kidnapper’s Joy..." Now that was amusing if it was not horrifying. Seymour was a terrible genius to use both aspects of the poison, one to capture his victims and the other to make it easier for him to work on them.

Obviously it was a rarity which, made it a specialty item to get in Ne'haer if one knew how to so "you find out where he get it from, you got him." However fortuitous the knowledge seemed to be though, whoever would hunt him would not be as lucky. "Poison'll get you. Poison'll hurt you.
Time'll be important before permanent damage. Don't get hit or come back fast, your choice, but this man is no joke"
but Nauta did not need to remind Ziri or Nabarra about that.
