Praetorum scratched gently at Sivan's scales, handing her reins to Myron.

In a forest as dense as Bastard's Grove, their mounts would be more a liability than anything else, so Selyin had ordered half of the band to stay behind, both to protect their mounts, and protect the people gathering up anything salvagable from the now extinct village. More than a few villages had gotten the news that Farnham had fallen, and had sent scavengers to take what they could, corpses included. Cold, but that was Yaralon for you.

Up ahead, Selyin and Clarissa were conferring, a scruffy man hovering over their shoulders. That would be the hunter from Selby, he assumed. He hadn't spoken to the man yet, and probably wouldn't until they returned; until further notice, Prae was stationed on the band's left flank, keeping a watch out to make sure they didn't get ambushed while they chased down this mad mage. Edyn was doing the same on their right, while Selyin and the two trackers took the lead.

The band was somberly quiet when they set off into the forest. They were fifty of the Helping Hand's toughest, most experienced members, but taking down a mage was an uncommon job, even in Yaralon. But it was work that needed to be done, by all available hands. Before the situation got out of control. Ideally, they would have had intel from the scouts they'd sent into the forest, learned the lay of the land and found their enemy before launching an attack. But the scouts Selyin had sent ahead of them wasn't one of the corpses in the village, and they had no others who thought they were good enough to evade a wolf's nose.

So instead they were launching a lightning strike, chasing after the enemy through the forest as fast as possible and hoping to catch them off guard. Prae had prepared his usual set of runes for the occasion, and set a chained combo of sight and sound on his head. As he marched with the rest of the company, he kept an eye on the rest of the forest, watching and listening for anything out of the ordinary, anything that might signal an attack.

What he saw instead was nothing: no fleeing rabbits, no curious squirrels, no birds taking flight. He could hear no chittering or squawks or hoofsteps, even with his enhanced hearing, none of the usual activity of a forest.

<Creepy.> Sap whispered in his mind.

Prae couldn't help but agree. Even when entire armies marched to the sound of drumbeats, there were always signs of animal activity in a forest like this. Except now... the place seemed dead.

Something flickered in the corner of Prae's vision, and his head snapped to the side, scanning the forest as he marched. It was growing dark, and twisted trees of Bastard's Grove cast the strangest shadows, but he could just barely make out...

"Ricky." Prae said, forcing his voice to calm. "Send a message to the front: Two wolves are keeping pace with us on our left. Hard to make out, they're keeping their distance, but they don't quite look right."

Another wolf joined its companions as the message was passed to Selyin up front. A few bits later, Ricky fell back to Prae's side. "Edyn's reported the same thing, four on that side." He let out a soft huff of laughter. "Your sight would be damn useful right about now. I keep looking over and expecting to actually spot them."

"I barely can, even with this." Prae muttered. "They're being careful. Gathering in numbers?"

Even as he said it, another wolf joined the pack. And... it seemed to Prae there was movement even further beyond them, a flickering shadow he couldn't make out. Before he could report this, another message made its way through the ranks.

"New orders." Clarissa said. "At the sound of the horn, we turn right to attack the wolves Edyn's spotted. Praetorum and the defenders in the last two ranks, move to the back to protect against a rear attack."

Prae nodded silently, and began to slow his pace, falling back to accompany the rear ranks.

None of them needed to utter a word; the tenseness between them said everything. For a long, agonizing bit, they continued to march, readying themselves for action.

And then, the sound of a horn, bellowing through the trees.

And the ground erupted beneath them.

Cries of confusion and alarm cut through the silence as massive walls of stone erupted from the forest floor, showering the mercenaries with dirt and casting them into shadow. Praetorum whirled around, scanning the area he could see. The walls had emerged in the center of their formation, and Prae could now only see maybe a dozen other mercenaries.

They were being separated!

Before he could even begin to try and use defiance to try and bring the walls down, a blood curling howl sounded from the woods; in the next instant, several dark figures shot into the band of Yari in a flurry of fur and fang. With his enhance vision, Praetorum could see that they were something like wolves, only... wrong. Very, very wrong. There were three of them, each with fangs too big for their mouths and too many claws on each paw, fur patchy, hide stretched tight over their skeletons, like a parody of a hound.

<I don't like it.> Sap whined, shrinking in Prae's soul. <They're not edible.>

Prae didn't have time to think about that statement. The creatures snapped and clawed at the yari, howling through slavering maws, and even as he raised his weapon, prepared to join the fray, he understood what they were doing; they were herding the mercenaries out into the forest, attacking not to kill, but to scare. To scatter.

"Stick together!" Praetorum bellowed over the sounds of battle. "Don't let them separate you from one another!" The five or six mercenaries around him seemed to agree, drawing closer to Praetorum as they stabbed and slashed at the encroaching 'wolves'.

More walls came up, this time throwing up clods of dirt as well, shrinking visibility. Fates, they'd really walked into one hell of a trap. Swearing loudly, Praetorum turned to the nearest wall, and struck it with his palm; as he did so, the stone rumbled, and collapsed obligingly, revealing another small knot of Yari fighting off one of those fucked up wolves. "We join up with them." Prae barked to his group. "I'll take the rear, hold these wolves off. Let's go!"

No one argued, falling back towards the other Yari as the wolves nipped at their heels. Prae's scythe swung, catching one across the paw, but it barely seemed to care, lunging at him again and smashing itself across his shield. Prae chanced a glance over his shoulder, found the two group of yari handily beating back another trio of wolves together.

He sliced at the wolves he was fighting, forcing them to leap back, and turned to join his allies. And then one more creature emerged from the shadows, cutting Prae off from the others, and rising onto its hind legs. It was as much a bear as the other things had been wolves, and Praetorum frantically ran through his options. A bear at his front, wolves at his back, and walls to his right. He could try to slip past the bear to rejoin the others, and then... they would be facing five wolves and one bear.

Or he could do what he did best, and act as bait.

Gritting his teeth, Prae lunged forwards, jabbing at the bear's belly. When the creature roared and swiped at him, he blocked its blow, gritting his teeth as the force behind that massive paw jarred against his shield, and then lunged to his left as he heard the wolves behind him try to attack. With the wind dragging him out of the way, he just barely evaded the leap of the wolves, and landed hard on his feet, setting off at a run away from his companions. A quick glance behind him showed that the bear and one of the wolves were chasing after him, while the other wolf had turned away to snap at an escaping mercenary.

Good enough. It'd give the others a chance, at least. He ducked and weaved through the trees, trying to both stay ahead of the pair and stay in sight of them, searching all the while for....

There. A spot where the trees opened up, just a little. Not enough to be called a clearing, but just enough that he could make his move without hesitation. Dashing into that opening, Prae leaped into the air, and turned, the wind helping to redirect his forwards momentum into a proper spin. And as the bear barreled in after him Praetorum reached instinctively for the element which sang to him loudest.

With the wind twisting him in the open air, the sweeping kick Prae sent through the air was faster than it had any right to be, as was the bolt of fire that erupted from his foot.

See I told you it could not be one of Karem's pack. Why would there be a bear, it has to be a becommer... It just has to be. Or I would have to go down there myself. Anyways, how do you make even a combat thread where your group is getting rounded up so comfy to read. I swear you could write a murder and torture scene, and I could read it to a child as a bed time story. Keep up the good fight and be the bait we needed.

Any injures are based on a 1d100 roll using applicable skills
