Cat and Mouse

But who is the cat really?

Beyond the city of Rharne lies the Stormlands, which is home to a number of farms, forests, fields, Lake Lovalus, and the River Zynyx. This subforum also includes the Stormwastes to the south.

Cat and Mouse

“Loose, Liam.” Shl’Drei repeated it - his body relaxed and his face gentle. Liam didn’t find much reason to stay after looking at his partner - he took off and didn’t look back. The stormlands where somewhat of a home away from for Shl’Drei - and Liam. The carcal wasn’t often allowed to venture out of Shl’Drei’s sight - he was somewhat of an indiscriminate hunter when left on his own. So when Shl’Drei gave the loose command Liam was hesitant at first.

When Liam was out of sight Shl’Drei dropped into the grass bum first - determined to relax for a bit. Liam was trained, but even he needed to get out and be an animal every now and then. He did well - not attacking civilians and sticking close to his human so he’d been rewarded with free roam. Loose was a command he rarely used - it basically translated into ‘go wild’ in Liam’s mind, and Shl’Drei reserved it as the ultimate reward.

He only had free roam in two places - their home and the stormlands. Besides, most people wouldn’t take to kindly to a large feline predator roaming their city. Shl’Drei stifled a laugh - Liam stalking another’s home popping into his mind. The thought gone, the blond slowly got comfortable in the grass. He let out a pleased sigh - having worked a hard days work, the fatigue was slowly ebbing away as he closed his eyes to listen to the soft hum of the wind.

After a few breaks later he jumped up - alert and aware. Shl’Drei strained his ears - he hadn’t imaged it had he? The guttural growl of Liam on the attack and the soft but present scream someone released - possibly upon seeing him. When he heard the caracal growl again Shl’Drei took the whip from his waistband and headed in the general direction of the sound.

“No!” Once he was within better range, he barked a command he hoped Liam heard. Te caracal looked back at him for just a moment before turning his attention back to whatever race had caught his attention. He could make out shapes - being quite a distance away, but he quickly snapped the whip in the air - the sound startling the feline enough to make him back away slowly.

Once he had run back to Liam’s side, the man approached the stranger. Badly shaken he noticed, but otherwise unharmed. The person beside them seemed fine - so he focused on the shaken teen. He knelt to their level spoke calmly, his language soft. “Hey now, sorry about the overgrown cat - he’s a little rowdy. He won’t hurt you though.”

He was quick to gesture to the bratty child that stood behind him - Liam yawned before laying down, apparently now uninterested in the teen. He exhaled loudly as he apologized, exasperated with the cats behavior. He stood, and turned to check on the other person. “Sorry about that - he’s generally well behaved. I hope he didn’t scare you too much. I’m Shl’Drei - that trouble maker is Liam.”

⌘ Fauldren's balls it was hot, but the Naer couldnt complain, as this was the first contract she had gotten as a bodyguard. The sad part was it was to a teenager, one who found her exotic and wanted her to give him tour of the Stormlands. In all honesty she was just hoping to get this over with and get her pay, though it wasnt worth the 200 gold nel he offered. As they toured the Stormland the young man was trying dazzle her with tales of his heroism and what not but she was more concerned with getting through the day without acting on the urge to bash his skull clean in. She played her part, eating up his compliments, laughing at his jokes and what now, but it was all just an act for her, feigning attention just to make it through the trial. The time came for a break and they found themselves at a clearing, one that afforded her a complete view of their surrounding area. At least thats what she thought, as it seemed something had been watching them, and Xerxia picked up on it. Lacing her hands with her metal gauntlets, she was on the defensive, looking around to see where this threat could be coming from. Then she heard the growl, and immediately went to protect the boy. Come out, come out, where ever you are pussycat? Let's play tag. She said, knowing full well that her version of tag meant she was going to cave its head in given the chance. As it came into view, the boy screamed which made her giggle, then hearing the crack of a whip. From the forest came a man, who seemed to be the owner or at least handler of the beast. He apologize, to her charge, the came to check on her. Oh I'm more than ok handsome, but you should be glad you showed when you did, otherwise I would have made quite the mess of you pussy.....cat. She teased, looking the man over. He was hella handsome to say the least, but she couldnt let herself be distracted. ⌘

Shl'Drei had no time to console the boy - he was obviously to frightened to listen. He was wuss - Shl'Drei concluded noticing how the woman seemed to be his only defense. He faced her fully - admired her beauty briefly before noticing how open she seemed to facing Liam. She hadn't hesitated to step in front of the young man - most would've fled or been struck with fear. Her words were poison - but she said them with such calm fluidity he was inclined to believe her.

"It's good a came at once then." It was simple - and held no arrogance. He didn't like the idea of a woman protecting a man, no - but the wild look of excitement on her face told him to admire her. Only at distance - fire was pretty, but getting to close lead to burns. He wasn't daft, the teens lady friend obviously held power enough for confidence. He was curious though, and as he spoke his curiosity rang true. "How did you plan to male a mess of him? He's a grown caracal, shouldn't you be more cautious?"

He ignored the boy that cowered on the ground when Liam opened his mouth to yawn. What a pathetic boy, his thoughts echoed. Liam was a wild creature - one that acted purely based of the language others displayed to them. Like any cat a mouse would be toyed with - and that's how the caracal viewed the boy, as a mouse. Whether or not one was scared - it never paid off to present it so openly. He raised a brow, a snort leaving him as he gazed at the younger. "How did you get stuck with this boy?"

⌘ She couldnt say she didnt mind this distraction, it saved her from killing the brat, and her charge from well.........dying. This man and his pet were interesting if anything. She had to admire the beast for its natural strength and ability to instill fear. She could even admire its handler for having the power to assert dominance over it in order for it to obey his commands. Ugh power was so intoxicating to the Naer, and this man was feeding her need for it, making it hard for her to focus on her job. Upon him introducing himself and his pet a few moments ago she made note of his name, as she would be remembering it. He agreed with her statement of coming in the nick of time, to which she giggled. His inquiry made her smirk, though her eyes smiled at him as she walked over to her client. Aside from being a mage, I'm a capable fighter. Beast or mortal being I can handle myself, and know how to bring brutality when the need calls for it. After making sure he was truly alright she looked to him as he asked why she was not scared. As if I would be frighten of an overgrown house cat! Growing up in Augiery makes you somewhat fearless I guess you can say. If anything, Liam should be far more afraid of what I can do to him. She said, cutting a devilish glare to the feline. Standing she helped the teenage male to his feet and cupped his face. Oh him? well I just enjoy giving adventure seekers a tour through the Rharne Stormlands........that and the 200 gold nel his mother is paying me to keep her precious little man alive. She teased, pinching the male's cheeks. What about you, whats a guy and his kitty doing all the way out here?

The human hummed his acknowledgment. So the woman was a mage? Magic was a concept that went over his head as he was fine with handling his affairs with physical power - something he others took notice of. The woman hadn’t showed much fear - and had to be capable else she wouldn’t have attempted to take on the Caracal.

I find it hard to doubt it when you speak so boldly.” Though sincere it was easy to hear the amusement in his tone. He’d not met many woman who were so fearless, must would scream and run if Liam had challenged them. That alone was reason for interest. She’s some kind of guard then? He raised a brow when she pinched the young mans cheeks - to him it was her asserting her dominance over him. She seemed to exude superiority and something told the blond that she could easily be dangerous.

You can’t exactly let a Caracal roam the city streets without someone overreacting - this is as close as it gets to natural habitat for him. For me, well I train out here. It’s a peaceful place to go and relax.” He chuckled at the thought of Liam roaming the streets of Rharne. He paused suddenly as if caught by something before speaking. “I never caught your name.

Something about the way she held herself told Shl’Drei to treat her as he would one of the more dangerous beasts in his line of work. It wasn’t that she scared him, it was more she would fight to assert herself - and that made it harder to become the alpha of sorts. He couldn’t deny he found it exciting however, a challenge was a challenge after all.

⌘ His answer made the most sense. Though she giggled at the thought of seeing Rharnians run in fear of the big ole' alley cat. He asked her for her name, and twirling her hair in her fingers, she smiled. Yavanna E, Its rather nice to meet you and your kitty. She said, moving some hair from her face with a flip. She took the hand of her charge and lead him in front of her, wanting to get his excursion over with as soon as mortally possible. Then an interesting idea hit her. This man was far more interesting company than the brat she was being paid to watch, and it would help to have someone so acclimated with the terrain show them around. Turning she sauntered back to the animal tamer. Hey, why not come with us, I could use some better company than that one, and you know the area. Plus I'll split the 200 gold nels with you if you do. What do ya say, dont tell me you can say no to damsel lost in the woods with no clue which way is which? She teased, playing coy, an purposely bad at that. It was more so a jest and an invatation for the man to come with her. She wanted to see what he was about and see if he could be dominated. His mannerisms read "caution" which made the naer feel as if her unusual demeanor has him uneasy.....which was good in her case.⌘

Yavanna was a sly being. He got the feeling that she had caught on to his interest - and his caution. So she twisted herself in a way that she could gain control and it saw that his intrigue was openly there. He didn't stare at her, no he didn't dare openly ogle a woman like the teen she was guarding. But at the same time he didn't make much effort to dull his curiosity. He inclined his head shortly after her introduction, but made his amusement clear when she mentioned herself a lost damsel.

"Mm, damsel now, are we? I faintly recall hearing you being able to take care of yourself." He didn't deny going though and instead turned to follow the woman, a small smile on his features. Shl'Drei would admit he was curious to see if the woman thought of him as something to be tamed - the look in her eyes almost daring him to defy her. He couldn't deny that he was tempted. "Though I wouldn't be much of a prince charming if I took nel from my damsel now would I?"

His words were playful, but he was serious about not taking the nel - it wasn't his to take. And he doubted the boy being guided would want his mother to pay Shl'Drei after humiliating him in front of Yavanna. As it were his presence was angering the boy if the scowl on his face when he was invited was any indication. Liam rose when Shl'Drei began to move, taking his place beside the human.

Bloody HELL, this was an old one. Old enough for Zipper to had grabbed it! I enjoyed it, though, fragmentary though it was. There was a nice banter between the two and Liam was a star all my himself.
