Re: The Rise of Rhaum; The Fall of Rharne.

Image
Vivian grinned as she felt the blade hit home and go deep. She could see Vega and Varlum fighting Rhaum and they were definitely holding their own. But then Icarus turned into birds and she turned to start dealing with that. Before she could, though, Praetorum, Woe, and Praetorum's friend started to attend to them well enough that Vivian felt confident in their abilities to play birdcatcher. So instead, she felt her talents could be better used elsewhere. The bond told her that the Brightgleam water appeared to be having a solid effect on Rhaum, at least in its current state, so Vivian decided it was time to use her trump card. She closed her eyes for a second and called on her connection to Lovalus as one of the Induk's Grand Wardens, letting her own psyche merge with that of the lake spirit.

The moment she did, she felt a surprising sense of calm wash over her, stilling her mind somewhat. It appeared, as well, that Lovalus had some ideas for how they could best contribue to the fight against Rhaum. As Vivian opened her eyes, she called on the Grand Wardens ability to summon a truly massive Brightgleam Oasis. But instead of letting it spread out around them, Vivian used the water control powers of the Grand Warden to gather it all around her. Most she let hover around her in a sort of protective radius of water, but she gathered enough to cover herself in another, much thicker layer of Brightgleam Water. Then, with Lovalus' help and guidance, she rapidly increased the water pressure of her additional Brightgleam Layer until it had a cutting power all of its own. Then, she gathered lightning and lept around Rhraum to join her siblings.

Vega and Varlum were, in terms of pure skill, both better fighters than Vivian. Stronger and faster, and Vega was definitely a better swordswoman than Vivian, for all that Vivian was a master sword fighter in her own right. But in this instance, Vivian had something that they didn't. That additional layer of Brightgleam Water wasn't just defensive in nature, but offensive. Whenever Vivian swung her own sword, she had the water lash out with a blade of it's own, but always a different attack, and never just one blade. If she stabbed with her sword, two blades came out, one with a horizontal slash and another with diagonal chop, and so on with any other attack she made. There were other defenses as well, because while Vivian was no master of the shield, the water would form a shield to defend her if an attack would slip past her guard. Then of course, came the primary indicator that not all of the inteligence behind the water was human, for if Rhaum struck one of the water shields, a pair of great jaws like those of a Vesla would emerge from the shield and attempt to grab him, letting Vivian try to pull him off balance to make him even more vulnerable to her and her siblings attack.

Under her helmet, Vivian smiled again. When they stood united, no attacker had ever bested the three children of Faldrun who had defended Rharne against the Flameborn, and Rhaum would not be the one who defeated them. Not while Vivian drew breath.

38th Trial of Vhalar during Arc 720

We Don't Run
Take a look around you, yeah, the sky is falling
Sinners say your prayers this train is off the tracks
Nothing is forever when tomorrow's calling
Dancing with the devil to get one day back

I'm not afraid of burning bridges
'Cause I know they're gonna light my way
Like a Phoenix, from the ashes
Welcome to the future it's a new day

We don't run
I'm standing my ground
We don't run
And we don't back down

There's fire in the sky
There's thunder on the mountains
Bless each tear and this dirt I was born in (run)

We don't run
We don't run

Take me to the banks of your muddy water
Where the flesh and blood and the spirit meet
Only takes your touch for me to find salvation
You're the only reason that I still believe

I'm not afraid of burning bridges
'Cause I know they're gonna light my way
Like a Phoenix, from the ashes
Welcome to the future it's a new day

We don't run
I'm standing my ground
We don't run
And we don't back down

There's fire in the sky
There's thunder on the mountain

Bless each tear and this dirt I was born in (run)
We don't run
We don't run
We don't run

I'm standing my ground
We don't run
And we don't back down
There's fire in the sky
There's thunder on the mountain
Bless each tear and this dirt I was born in (run)

We don't run
We don't run
We don't run

Fire in the sky
Thunder in the mountains
Bless each tear and the dirt I was born in......

It was true.

Vega would never - not in a dozen arcs - understand the level of planning that Pimpernickel and The Veiled Blunder had gone to. She could - if she cared. But she didn't. Because she was too busy making that planning a waste of their time. If it took every ounce of strength she had and every drop of sweat and silver blood, this pair of utter losers would die.

Here. Now.

And Vega moved. She moved and she cut and she sliced. She saw what the cut under his arm did and then he started to speak. And, as he did, Vega sliced her sword across his mouth - then his eyebrows, then the opposite arm. Her speed was incredible, usually, and here and now she was faster than she had ever been and then that was doubled - and doubled again. So, she sliced. She sliced, and she sliced and she got into a rhythm of it. She cut at him as he spoke, aiming to stop him speaking. She sliced across his eyebrows, so that the blood would stop him seeing. His arm, that one she aimed to slice the tendon and another strike - a slice - a slice.

And that was rhythm. And it was what fighters did. It was what she did. Every time. Vega understood rhythm. She was the mortalborn of it, after all.

But she was also the daughter of Turmoil.

Slice... slice.... slice.

And he called out. He called out a word. "Icarus"

It was a moment of weakness. A second where he was desperate. There were things that Vega would do in those, too. If he'd studied her, looked at her, watched her fight. She hesitated against mortals when they called for help. She always - always - granted mercy or gave a second chance. slice... slice... slice. She kept the rhythm, and then he called out.

And then - against every other thing she had ever done - Vega did something different.

Because every time - she fought with a rhythm. Every time, she danced. Every time, she sped herself and her companions up. Every time, she did that. Also, she would normally defend - she would normally consider the others in this. Normally, her concern would be the same, but her actions would be different. She would act in a way which protected others.

And so this time? She did not.

Because she was the Mortalborn of Rhythm, not of Stupid. They had intelligence on her, she knew. They'd watched her, they knew her.

So she didn't pretend to be anyone else.

She just sang a different song. Danced a different dance.

He called out and, as he did? Vega drove her sword with every ounce of strength and every slightest bit of skill, Vega drove her sword of Brightgleam water straight through his eye.

And as she did, she called on Lovalus, she used the ability granted to her as a Grand Warden - something no one knew she was - and as her eyes turned ice blue, she poured Lovalus' water - from the Oasis that was there already thanks to Vivian - down her sword, through her sword - and straight into his head.

We don't run......

Abilities Vega uses
  • Bond (Moderate) with Vivian, Varlum, GennadiyaThe Adored can Bond with up to 3 other people. In doing so all Bonded individuals gain the single glowing band around their left forearm. The Bond remains as long as both the Adored and those Bonded allow it. The Bond only functions within 1000 feet of the Adored, and dissipates shortly beyond that distance. Images and feeling can be willed across the Bond. The higher the sender’s Discipline, the more details can be relayed.
  • Bound Beyond Blood with Vivian, Varlum, Gennadiya The Adored can share in the Racial Bonus' of those whom they have Bonded, and share their own Racial Bonus with the Bonded. 10 points of the Adored's Racial Bonus are shared with those they have Bonded, and 10 points of each Bonded’s Racial Bonus is shared with the Adored. - Vega's RB is Meditation - Vega gives 10 XP in Meditation to all three.
  • Bound in Battle with Vivian, Varlum, Gennadiya The Favored and those Bonded with them are better able to fight together. Their tactics and movements flow almost seamlessly with little-to-no spoken communication. The Bond passes insights and slight thoughts between those Bonded while in combat together. - we fight together seamlessly
  • Bound Tongue The Favored is able to understand one Fluent Language of those they have Bonded. The selected language can be changed once per trial.
  • Shooting Star - Gennadiya A Bow can be blessed to emit a ray of star light in a path that displays the trajectory of the arrow nocked upon it. This does not affect the shooter's ability to maintain this aim, and if the light moves from the target upon release of the arrow, the shot will still miss the mark. This effect can be called upon three times a trial.
  • Fulcrum of Fervour - all who were there The Blessed can select a single word to empower with the ability to spread optimism. When he cries it, those nearby may take up the cry, compounding the power and range of it's uplifting effect. The fervor generated by this collective outcry will last until dawn of the next trial. This can only be cast once per cycle. At "Exalted", it can be cast three times per cycle. (word is Victory)
  • Spread the Word - Gennadiya & Praetorum Spread the Word The Blessed can make additional individuals the central focus of "Flow of Morale", "Calming Overcast", "Cooling/Warming Trend", "Night Torch" or "Dry Ice Cloud" without it costing him his charge of its use. This second person must be willing, but can only be given one of these boons at a time. The Blessed can bestow several of the same boon, or one each of several if he chooses. One of each -Genna & Prae can use Xiur-granted abilities.
  • Song of Hope - all who heard her play Vega has developed her ability to the point that she can use sound as a means of increasing the skills of those around her. Her devotion to Xiur and Qylios is such that she is determined to be hopeful, and to always do her best. She can play and, when she plays, it gives a boost to the skills of those who hear it. When Vega focuses on a group and actively uses this ability - she is able to inspire them to be the very best version of themselves. Any and all who are in the room / area where she plays (so not someone that hears it in passing, they have to be listening) have a +1 level bonus on a non-magic skill for the next trial (so, novice becomes competent, competent becomes expert etc). This skill will be directly linked to the focus Vega has so - if it is in a camp preparing for battle, for the soldiers it will be a combat skill - but the cook for that camp would gain a bonus to cooking for the troops. No more than one bonus per day can be given. - everyone gains a +1 level to a skill they choose, but must be their focus for this battle. Vega's skill choice is TACTICS - which she'll up to Master.
  • Tune Bound - all who heard her play Following on from her capstone, this ability allows Vega to effective 'buff' a group who hear her play. So inspiring is her music that, when she is attempting to instill any emotion linked with the Domains of Xiur or Qylios, she gives them the ability to fight together, as though they are bonded as per the Qylios mark. Whole groups can function together, fighting as one with each individual having full knowledge of what is going on in the battle. All of the people who are bonded in this way must have heard Vega play at the same time, and within the last trial. This applies to herself, as well.
  • Hold The LineThe Favored is able to bolster the morale of any who stand with them. The call rings out and dispels fear in the defenders, whether mundane or magical. Those affected by the shout gain a small boost in stamina and the use of a shield. The effects of this ability last for ten bits, and can only overcome magical fear effects from other Marks of the same tier or lower. Any fear effects caused by Domain Magic can be overcome as follows: Favored can overcome Magic at a Competent level or lower, Adored can overcome Expert level or lower, and Exalted can overcome Master level or lower. Vega is Adored
  • Flow of Morale- all allies in this threadThe Blessed is able to bring a brief surge of hopeful resolve to those around him. Within 10 feet, this lasts for eight bits; to 20 feet, it lasts for five bits; to 30 feet it lasts for two bits. At "Adored", double either the range or duration. At "Exalted", double both. (Vega is Exalted - so it's allies within 60ft for 4 minutes)
  • Vega's Sword Melody: A masterwork sea blue crystal sword forged from the body of Perfection. This sword is nearly as hard as Adamantite and slices just as cleanly. On the flat of the sword several words will appear when the blade is held in the right light that only Vega can see. The words are: "May You Never Break".

Melodic Ballad: Melody is unique as it 'sings' when the blade in swung creating a bright resonate tone that sounds similar to the sharp peal of an echoing bell. The sound is not loud enough to startle anyone but it can be heard even amid the din of an ongoing battle. The Melodic Ballad creates an aura around the wielder roughly twenty feet in diameter that will cause enemies to be put on edge and be innately intimidated by the wielder. Enemies will be more likely to flee, especially if they do not possess at least Competency in Discipline. Something about Melody's sharp piercing voice; although beautiful seems to unnerve opponents, while leaving allies completely alone. This effect is dependent on Vega's opinions of the people around her. [NOTE: This effect is strengthened slightly and it's radius of effect increased by ten feet when in use alongside the sword Harmony

March to Arms: Vega will find over time that, after using the sword for several trials [20 trials] that Melody will return to her hand if she focuses enough on the sword, the blade with resonate with it's telltale song before flying into her grasp, as if borne on an invisible wind. This effect can only be achieved if the sword is within her line of sight. This ability cannot be used to harm others as Melody will always move around obstacles before returning to it's master's hand.
Received / Used on Self
Currently boosted skills:
  • Strength =1,500 / 250 (GM)
  • 3 x speed (already increased greatly), + Rune of Focus (Prae) + Pocket of Time (Varlum)
  • Endurance =1064/250. (GM)
  • Blades = 266/250 (Tier 2)
  • Leadership = 192/250 (Master)
  • Tactics = boosted to Master
► Show Spoiler

Used On Pimpernickels and TVB
They should be slowed down to half their speed.
The ability is: Unlike her father, the Immortal of Turmoil, Vega is able to see the rhythm in a given situation. In combat, in her innate musical talent, in dancing or even in her worship, Vega is able to see the patterns and sense the rhythm in any circumstance. However, in order to do that, she needs to step back and take a clear look at the situation. With this ability, Vega is able to slow the tempo of a situation down, so long as she is playing an instrument or singing. When she is doing this, she is able to manipulate the tempo of a combat. This impacts up to three people and allows Vega to either speed up the tempo, for them (thus making them faster moving) or slowing it down (thus, slower). In practical terms, it allows her to speed up or slow down up to three individuals in a combat by a factor of 50%. This must be either speeding up, or slowing down and can not be both at once.

It should be noted that she has never done this since coming to Storm's Edge, only ever speeded herself up. In fact, she's only ever used it once, at sea, on the boat where she and Arlo live, when they were practicing.

Re: The Rise of Rhaum; The Fall of Rharne.

Regrettably, Woe's lash never saw the opportunity to scourge the Lotharro's all-too-pristine underdweller face. Before he and Praetorum could close their attack on the Purveyor, he was scattered by an attack from Vivian, and turned into a flock of fiery birds. Yet, Woe's whip did find purchase, on the leg of one of the ravens, which it dragged down to the ground. Woe gave slack and then cracked the whip upon the raven's spine, so as to break it.

Through the Qylios bond, amazing as it was, he could perceive the messages going throughout the group. Praetorum looked meaningfully toward Balthazar, and Woe knew what that meant. Perhaps these two had fought together, as well, for he seemed to know what Balthazar was capable of. Yet gathering elemental energies for a lightning attack would take time, Time that Woe used to send the point of his whip toward those birds. Lash after lash, he scourged the creatures, and with his technique garnered from a long career of inflicting pain,
the birds would feel each other's as they suffered in close proximity.

Woe withdrew his whip before Balthazar could launch another elemental attack, and used the instrument to draw several traps of Fatigue upon the ground. He memorized their position, and tasked them with a very specific mental trigger from his own mind. It was a
name
he hadn't bothered to whisper for some time, the name of his first initiate. The one Llyr had stolen from him.

These runes were set several arm's lengths apart, in a triangle from each other. The intention being to create a sort of bottle neck through which anyone could lead the enemy to, and then exploit him with the fatigue rune as Woe signalled the trigger. Should either Rhaum or the Purveyor walk over the runic trap, and no other, he would activate it.

But for now, he waited for Balthazar's assault upon the birds, while warning the rest of the bondmates of the position of those traps.

Effects Woe puts on the runic trap
Hone -
-Chained Rune of Fatigue and Night: x4 decrease in Endurance for the one who steps upon it once triggered, and x2 blindness upon the one who steps on it when it triggers.
-Grasping Frailty: The endurance rune spreads out from Icarus' core to the rest of his body.
- Mental trigger from Woe should Rhaum or Icarus drift toward the trap.
Effects accepted from others
Hone - 3x Strength, 3x Speed, 4x Endurance on all four limbs; 8x Focus, 2x Sight on head; Rune of Resistance on back. from Praetoruml
Attunement - Static: Scrambles up to nine people's frequencies—interferes with abilities meant to gather information on them (Varlum, Vega, Vivian, Gennadiya, Balthazar, Woe)
Song of Hope (Vega) - Boosts Woe's Endurance skill from competent to Expert.
Tune Bound - Can fight as if having a qylios bond with allies around him
Effects Woe puts on himself
Attunement:

-Omnivision, allowing Woe awareness of his immediate surroundings, which while not the same as sight is almost as good.

Abrogation:

-A replicative field around his immediate personal space.
-Exception for Prae’s Attunement technique of static placed upon Woe, which Woe will of course accept.
chain Mesh bull Whip
Condition: New
Quality: Good
Material: Steel and Leather.

Description: A good bullwhip made of steel mesh. The bullwhip’s handle is roughly six inches in length, its grip wrapped in leather and shaped in imperial gladius style. The coil of the mesh whip is four feet in length, consisting of sharpened and barbed chain links of steel and external rivets of steel extending into an ever-narrowing taper up until the final foot of length, which is a very thin length of chain weighted for cracking.
TIER 6 ARMOR
Condition: Slightly used and battleworn.
Quality: Masterwork
Material: Grave Gold

Description: The metal of the armor itself was of a golden color, only having begun to earn its blood marks. The cloth that accompanied the brigandine pieces of armor were black.

As for its construction, the suit began with a maile coif and half-mask that covered Woe's upper face. The chain portios of the coif had thick, silken underpadding. The mask molded in the likeness of a demon's eyes, with a few other motifs besides. From the coif, a mantle of maile and silken padded cloth covered his neck and shoulders. Polished scale lamellar covers his chest, in a cuirass. From the cuirass, a pair of maile and padded silk sleeves ended in protective vambraces.

A half-skirt of lamellar scale protected his legs, their scales swept around in Imperial style. A girdle of gravegold protected his midsection. Around the legs, a pair of chain leggings with black silk underpadding. Finally, a pair of sabatons that protected his feet.

Re: The Rise of Rhaum; The Fall of Rharne.

38 Vhalar 720
After the first crack of lightning struck and killed a bird, Balthazar's mind ran alight with hundreds of ideas about how to deal with the dispersing swarm. He could conjure a portal and suck them into it to set Praetorum up for some sort of elemental attack or perhaps he could just start throwing lightning quickly and hope for the best in terms of accuracy. No... a portal would be too loud. Yet there was one element they could turn to that made a more pleasant noise. Vega and Varlum seemed to have Rhaum under control so Balthazar didn't give him more than passing focus. He couldn't disregard his other foe so easily, but Icarus turning into a bunch of birds and trying to fly away certainly had a way of holding the mage's focus. Get the birds. Stop the birds. The red head and the big lizard will handle the big fireball. It seemed Praetorum was of a similar mind, the link Vega had granted them doing its work. The two of them seemed to have a similar thought about how to handle the winged enemy.

Wind.

Praetorum began to call on their shared kin and Balthazar let the other Defier take over, watching carefully and gently prodding at the wind to help his companion trap the flaming ravens within his slowly shrinking bubble. Balthazar watched carefully while the birds were funneled closer together and he prepared his attack. He held his hands out towards the wind trap Praetorum had created to cage the burning birds. He would hit them all, but he needed time to focus- even enhanced as he was. The electricity in the air began to spread centered on Praetorum's wind cage while Woe kept the birds in line with his whip. Vivian moved on to strike down Rhaum with Vega and Varlum while Balthazar kept his focus on his next strike.

He was ready, he could feel it and Woe would be able to see it- there were literal sparks arcing off the mage, but he did not attack until Woe's whip was pulled back. It felt a little like Quacia in that moment, waiting for Woe to give him the opening to strike their foe down, but Balthazar didn't get lost in memories. He felt electricity surging through his veins and he let it out. The first time he had been worried about hitting Vivian because she was bouncing around faster than Balthazar could track but this time the target was being held out for him. This time all he was worried about was hitting every bird. So he let lightning rain until he was sure he'd done just that or until he felt the real pushback from his sparks.

Action
Defiance (Master) - Summon... 1 bolt of lightning per bird.
Buffs
Rupturing (Master) - Grants Balthazar a ten foot sphere of motion sensing around his body, and he instinctively knows the distance he is looking.

Praetorum's Runes - 3x Strength, 3x Speed, 4x Endurance on all four limbs; 8x Focus, 2x Sight on head; Rune of Resistance on back.
Song of Hope (Vega) - Boosts Balthazar's Blades skill from Expert to Master.
Tune Bound - Can fight as if having a qylios bond with allies around him
Equipment
Masterwork Grave Gold Armor
Masterwork Faldrunium Katana
Two Masterwork Grave Gold Spring Loaded Daggers
Good+ Grave Gold Hammer (Enchanted)

Mutations

  • Once Paradigm Is Removed: He glows faintly, his skin is warm and sometimes hot to the touch, and when he gets angry sparks literally fly off him. He's a the middle of a field of static electricity so every once in a while when you touch him, you get shocked. Fire leans towards Balthazar and droplets of water seem magnetically attracted to him. He has a series of cracks on his right pectoral that glow of soft emerald. His eyes and the cracks reaching down to his cheeks glow a dark blue. The etheric cracks spiderwebbing up his arms glow orange.

Scars

  • Oops, Oops, Ouch: Balthazar Black has twenty scars across his back from a lashing as well as scars on his hands and arms from jagged rocks in Faldrass. There are two scars on the sides of his abdomen from being stabbed and a slash across his back which blends in with the whip scars.

Re: The Rise of Rhaum; The Fall of Rharne.

Gennadiya watched the battle her bow ready for a distant hoping that her focus had help the two combatants as they attacked the pumpernickel. She could sense the Vega had thrown cation to the wind, and was just diving in there. Varlum she sensed had also taken the same tactics. The young woman behind them could sense the wisdom in that approach. Planned attacks where what this villain expected. Chaos made flesh wasn’t. How could you plan for the unexpected?

Bonded as she was to Vega she could see and sense how the wounds that should have cauterized were not doing that, and that creatures very blood was boiling. Genna felt her nostrils flair. She had seen that before. Countless people in the city who had died of a plague because their blood boiled. To say Genna was angry was being very mild. These two had killed who know how many.

While Genna was moving in her box step. She had prepared an attack for Icarus watched as Vivian pulled the same tactic, do the unexpected, be a bit chaotic. Evan as the others moved closer Genna held her shot so not to hit any of her friends and allies. The blue eyes woman, though surprised, was ready when the birds burst forth from the new empty robes. Genna let her angry help her focus as picked at crow and shoot. Aiming just ahead of its trajectory as she paused briefly in her basic dance. She then pulled another arrow dipped in oasis water and took aim at another and shot.

Genna would continue her strange dance as she moved, aimed, paused and then shot again. She wasn’t someone to get into the main fight but here she could be helpful.
Buffs and Items

Bright Eyes The Blessed is able to look into any level of natural brightness with no debilitating effect. This means no attempt to dazzle him with natural light will work. He is able to enjoy this resistance for ten bits (minutes) per trial for each ability he has in this mark. Magically created dazzling effects may work against him however.

Painted Sunrise (Minor) The Blessed can enhance the color of anything with the colors of the sunrise.

Saoire's Kiss - A small snow-globe that, when shattered, will instantly summon snow clouds and transform the surrounding area into a winter wonderland for the next trial. During this time the player will always find food, the cold will not find them, they will leave no tracks in the snow or scent to follow, and ice will never shatter beneath their feet. It is as if they are temporarily exempt from the dangers of winter. They can only use this item once, but the effect will last for an entire trial and cover the entire city they are in. here

Dancing Shoes - Red leather ankle boots made from soft, supple leather of Good + Quality. When she wears them, they appear to be normal shoes - however - whenever she dances, the music that she is hearing in her head / imagining is heard, playing for all. This can be very quiet or up to the volume of a full orchestra - depending on what Vega is imagining in her mind.

Upon hearing the music play - which continues as long as Vega is dancing - those who are allied to her are afforded a boost. In order to be affected by this they must be allied with her, AND be working towards a common goal. If that is the case, then she and her allies will find themselves surrounded by an individual armour which functions as full plate, but is weighless, totally flexible and invisible to the naked eye other than a ripple of air waves which it is, in fact, made up from.

Mosekes Bandage: The bandage that was used to treat Moseke's wound was left behind. The bandage is impervious to infection and can be used multiple times but must be washed in-between uses.
The Veil of Sight: The wearer finds that their sight is unable to be hindered through magical or physical means. They can automatically see through any material placed over their eyes. They are also able to see through both smoke and darkness without requiring any additional light, though they do not have the ability to see through walls and doors. This ability will also counter the vision aspect of the Naerikk’s Gift of Shadows.

Ilaren's Token: a seemingly normal coin, but with the insignia of Ilaren, three lightning bolts clutched in a fist, printed upon one side. At his time of greatest need, clutching the coin in her fist and offering a prayer to Ilaren has a chance to draw her to answer her call, and perform an act to rescue her from danger. This will only work if Ilaren is not otherwise indisposed at that moment - and Ilaren will only answer this call once, upon which time it becomes an ordinary, if pretty, coin.

Ranged bow skill at Expert for battle thanks to Vega.

Plus the group bonus as set out above by other players.

Re: The Rise of Rhaum; The Fall of Rharne.

It was working.

Their plan of attack had been wild and vicious, something so unpredictable the two hadn't really known what they would do other than swing. Perhaps that played to their benefit, however. Varlum's domain was ferocity, his powers all focused on making him vicious. But beyond that was more. Varlum wasn't simply a Mortalborn, not as he was concerned. While his blood was of Faldrun and his mother had been an Ithecal, that meant his soul was something beyond both Mortal and Immortal. It was of the dragons. Frosvinndur had noticed the connection between the two, as had Varlum. Maybe Rhaum was prepared for fighting mortals, even as high-skilled as the ones on Rharne's side. Perhaps he was even prepared for Mortalborn.

But he would not be prepared for him.

Once he had Rhaum backing up, however, he knew that the man would be doing anything in his power to defend. Mindless blows would do nothing to him if there was no real motive to them, at least not quickly. Every second he had was a second of preparing he could do, readying for whatever escape play he would make. They couldn't give him that option. They would need to be relentless and unforgiving. Fortunately, Varlum was good at being both of those things, as was Vega.

Thanks to the Qylios bond between the two, Varlum felt Vega building up her pattern of attack, mercilessly beating down on Rhaum and readying to change the tune just enough to throw him off. Which meant Varlum had a chance. As Vega would swing Varlum would attempt to do the same, trying to match their swings as best he could. But he wouldn't use his fist, not anymore. Only his jaws. Any arm outstretched, any opening of his head, a chance to bite at his legs and Varlum would rip parts of him off until there was nothing left of him.

Snapping away, golden dragon wrapped around him and many buffs to him, Varlum focused solely on his target. He wasn't disciplined well, he'd never done well with military structure or overall combat styles. He was himself, entirely and relentlessly. But that was what no man could prepare for, or at least Varlum hoped. If he could get just one firm snap on the man there would be nothing that would make him let go, not until the limb he bit was torn apart and left on the ground - or swallowed.

All he could do was hope it worked.

Buffs on Varlum
Towering Beast - Doubles his height
Inspire - Resists all fears and doubts
Bear of Ralaith - Buffs Varlum's Strength and Endurance
Enduring Scales - Endurance Buff for one minute
Nobility's Endurance - Endurance Buff to himself and allies for three minutes
Spiritborn Armor - Warden Armor
Embrace (Earth) - More Earth wrapped around Varlum, giving him more protection and allowing him to meld with the ground.
Soul of Dragons - Golden draconic scales that make his claws far sharper than they would normally be
Hone Runes from Prae: 3x Strength, 3x Speed, 4x Endurance on all four limbs; 8x Focus, 2x Sight on head; Rune of Resistance on back.
Buffs on Varlum's Allies
Inspire - Resist all fears and doubts
Nobility's Endurance - Endurance Buff for three minutes
Pocket of Time - Increases the flow of time around Vega, making her move faster than she already does.

Re: The Rise of Rhaum; The Fall of Rharne.

Image

The graceful, sophisticated and measured Rhaum was gone. As blow after rapid, debilitating blow swept over and over faster than his Eyes of the Discerning could reasonably follow, nor his enhanced body react in time to, he came to accept that he was, against all reasonable odds, losing - and not due to being outsmarted, but simply out-skilled, outnumbered, and thrown out of his element. The culmination of an entire arc, no, a lifetime, resolved and condensed into a single battle where they beat each-other senseless with pointed sticks. It stoked the true rage, the mouth-frothing fury that had long since been steeled under an icy surface of indifference. It brought forwards every shred of passion he'd bottled up for so very, very long.

Win or lose, there would be nothing dignified about this. The ugly, detestable things that lurked within his stomach seethed, roused by the emotions. No. No, no no no.

Vega's strikes sliced over his lips and cut them, forcing Rhaum to stumble over his lines. Every strike was undermined, every frantic combination blow disrupted and taken apart under the rhythm of deflections, counter-strikes, and debilitating blows that he had to constantly exert all his speed and endurance to merely reduce to shallow cuts. Each one festered and seethed under the punishment of his own Embrace and her Spiritborn Weapon, wearing away even further at his mobility and reaction times, allowing the next blow to come quicker, heavier. Varlum doubled down on the strategy, biting and clawing away, but his technique of fighting lacked the same precision and trained malice of Rhaum's, making it significantly easier to evade and deflect - only made a hindrance through its perfect coordination with Vega, as an added distraction, another thing to constantly split his focus between. Vivian, awash in Brightgleam Oasis water, was perhaps what finally tipped the scales completely. Brightgleam Oasis water seared his shoulder, reducing mobility in his left arm when Vivian's secondary slash impacted it even after he'd slid sideways to escape; Vega's cut across his brow poured water and blood down the sides of his face, narrowly avoiding his eyes. The eyes she struck out at with every ounce of skill, strength and precision she had at her disposal.

It sank straight through. The blade jammed deep into his eye, then his skull, and Brightgleam Water poured straight through the blade, boiling the blood and flesh that it touched until it peeled back to expose blackening viscera wilting away from the touch of spiritsteel. She was close enough that she could even hear the death rattle as the huge swathe of flame that had surrounded his body faded to embers and dissipated.

In that moment of clarity and peace, the corpse's arms both rose to wrap around her throat, as a sickly black glow erupted from Rhaum's stomach. Some horrid, unknown noise like the shearing of cartilage echoed in the arena, as though Rhaum's body was being torn in two from the inside - except Vega, thanks to her necklace, could understand it. Two words. Two, giddy words, coming from something, somewhere, inside Rhaum. Exhilarated to be freed.

FRESH MEAT!

Rhaum's head, split almost clean in two by Vega's sword, flopped almost comically on its shoulders with one blank, bloodshot eye as the rest of the body surged into motion somehow just as fast as a moment ago, even without the previous enhancements of its magic and prowess. The tail, lashing about behind it as a counterbalance, suddenly grew longer, more muscular, and its tip surged for Vivian with a giant bone-like club manifesting on the tip that smashed straight into one of the water-shields, triggering Vespa jaws that clamped around the limb and tore it clean off. The severed piece dropped to the floor, lifeless. The ragged stump left behind, seared by the water of the Brightgleam Oasis, waggled for just a moment - then grew three more club-like heads immediately afterwards, sprouting like the branches of a tree from its length that lashed at her next.

Below the first pair of arms suddenly grew a second, ending in claws much like Varlum's, crossed protectively over the stomach. From the elbow joint of each arm grew a second forearm, ending in a second hand. Each new addition growing and stitching itself together from raw bone and sinew, its origins entirely unknown.

It was a shame Balthazar, Praetorum and Woe had their hands full dealing with flaming crows, though they seemed to have a good handle on things. The birds swept out and dispersed as quickly as possible, but their chaos so soon post-transformation was something easily seized upon by Praetorum, using wind to upend them in mid-air and hurl them against one-another in a huddle. Of course, these also weren't mundane birds. Furious winds snagged their wings, yet as they caught on to the trick Praetorum was employing to hold them together, their wing-beats soon began to unify, adding the heat and flames of their fire-forms to create hot updrafts that fanned the flames of their bodies. Let them seize control, and it was clear what they intended - to turn Praetorum's trap into a weapon, a fire cyclone. Woe's frantic strikes, utilising their clumped-together forms to feed them with pain and distract their focus, and Gennadiya's distractions picking out the birds one by one with focused blows to the head, was the only thing that held them at bay from completing it in time.

Lightning struck, and arced from the birds, seizing each one and racing to the next in sharp, condensed blows that stunned, then paralysed, and finally burned the flaming creatures from the inside. When they each dropped to the floor afterwards, lifeless, the flames faded from their bodies and left only a cluster of black-feathered ravens. Quite fitting, that they would end a murder.

Re: The Rise of Rhaum; The Fall of Rharne.

Lightning crackled in Prae's vision, and he smiled, letting the air return to stillness. As the birds fell lifeless to the ground, Prae turned his attention to Rhaum.

The man was dead, surely—no one could survive having their head split open so, but his body still moved—and more than that, his body now changed. Even as Prae watched new limbs emerge from the creature—he didn't think he could call it a man any longer—his mind started to race as he began to formulate a plan. "With me." Prae barked at Balthazar and Woe, and began to run towards the battle.

The creature had two hands covering its stomach. What was it protecting there? It didn't matter—if the creature was making an effort to protect that part of its body, that was likely where its weak spot was. He focused on that insight, sending it through the bond to all the others.

Then, he sent another two images: Gennadiya's bow, and Rhaum's lower back—right behind where the stomach sat.

It wasn't ideal to shoot through such a bony part of the human body, but if it was protecting its stomach from the front, the half hidden Gennadiya might be able to hit its weak spot from behind where it had not yet grown arms. And to maximize the chances of that working...

"Lock its limbs down." Prae hissed quietly to Balthazar and Woe as they neared the creature Rhaum had become. The three already in range of the thing easily had enough power to damage this creature—immobilizing its limbs, even just for a moment, would give them the opportunity to do so. Even if it grew more limbs, Prae didn't believe it could do so forever. And even if it could, it still took a moment for those limbs to grow back, a moment where they could act.

Summoning his glaive to his hand, Prae activated Enduring Scales, and charged in to join the fray, careful not to block off Genna's line of fire to the creature's back. With his
shield
, Prae focused on
blocking
or parrying the creature's attacks, taking over for his allies defense so that they could throw everything they had into attacking without wasting time or energy on protecting themselves.

Calm
and
focused
, he also
attacked
where he could,
doing his best to make openings
that the other three or Gennadiya could take advantage of.

Effects on Prae
  • Brightgleam water coating weapon, shield and armor
  • Defiance - Air Embrace: A layer of compressed air over the top of Prae's armor
  • Hone - 3x Strength, 3x Speed, 4x Endurance on all four limbs; 8x Focus, 2x Sight on head; Rune of Rebound on tail
  • Attunement - Static: Scrambles Prae's frequency—interferes with abilities meant to gather information on him
  • Attunement - Omnivision: Lets him 'sense' the area around him, even if he can't see it
  • Taithir (Prae) - Honor's Shield: Boosts his shield, and the shields of his allies within 50 yards
  • Taithir (Varlum) - Inspire
  • Chosen (Varlum) - Boosts Prae's polearm skill from Master to GM
  • Diri of Weakness - Transfer: Grants Prae part of the speed stolen by Physical Drain (explained in enemies section) up to 50% again his own speed (his own speed includes the boost from hone runes)
  • Never Lost Again - Exactly what it says. Prae knows where he is. (The Beneath below Lake Lovalus, apparently :O)
  • Spread the Word (Vega) - Can use "Flow of Morale", "Calming Overcast", "Cooling/Warming Trend", "Night Torch" or "Dry Ice Cloud"
  • Song of Hope (Vega) - Boost Prae's shield skill from GM to T2
  • Tune Bound - Can fight as if having a qylios bond with allies around him
  • Taithir (Prae) - Enduring Scales: Lets Prae take more damage
Effects Prae placed on allies
  • Hone - 3x Strength, 3x Speed, 4x Endurance on all four limbs; 8x Focus, 2x Sight on head; Rune of Resistance on back. Given to all allies who want it (Varlum, Vega, Vivian, Gennadiya, Balthazar, Woe)
  • Attunement - Static: Scrambles up to nine people's frequencies—interferes with abilities meant to gather information on them (Varlum, Vega, Vivian, Gennadiya, Balthazar, Woe)
  • Taithir (Prae) - Honor's Shield: Boosts his shield, and the shields of his allies within 50 yards
Effects Prae placed on enemies
  • Framilia's Fearful Gaze: Praetorum can inflict a sense of intense dread and loss of morale on a dozen enemies within close proximity with a mere gaze. He can call upon this ability once a season. It can be resisted by those with a significant level of discipline skill.

38th Trial of Vhalar during Arc 720

We Don't Run
Take a look around you, yeah, the sky is falling
Sinners say your prayers this train is off the tracks
Nothing is forever when tomorrow's calling
Dancing with the devil to get one day back

I'm not afraid of burning bridges
'Cause I know they're gonna light my way
Like a Phoenix, from the ashes
Welcome to the future it's a new day

We don't run
I'm standing my ground
We don't run
And we don't back down

There's fire in the sky
There's thunder on the mountains
Bless each tear and this dirt I was born in (run)

We don't run
We don't run

Take me to the banks of your muddy water
Where the flesh and blood and the spirit meet
Only takes your touch for me to find salvation
You're the only reason that I still believe

I'm not afraid of burning bridges
'Cause I know they're gonna light my way
Like a Phoenix, from the ashes
Welcome to the future it's a new day

We don't run
I'm standing my ground
We don't run
And we don't back down

There's fire in the sky
There's thunder on the mountain

Bless each tear and this dirt I was born in (run)
We don't run
We don't run
We don't run

I'm standing my ground
We don't run
And we don't back down
There's fire in the sky
There's thunder on the mountain
Bless each tear and this dirt I was born in (run)

We don't run
We don't run
We don't run

Fire in the sky
Thunder in the mountains
Dancing with the devil to get one day back......

Vega was exhausted.

Not from this battle. Not at all. This one was - relatively - new still. But from the past arc. From fight, after fight, after fight. Sometimes, against the people who she was supposed to be standing with. From holding dead children in her arms and singing them back to life, twice - and experiencing their death as she did. From every death. Every time she had failed to protect, to be fast enough, strong enough, good enough to save them all.

From all of that, Vega was exhausted. Not in her muscles or her bones. No. In her silver heart pumping silver blood through her silver veins. In her soul she was tired and she missed her husband. There was no doubt. No question. Vega was tired. So, very tired.

And what was making her tired was this unmitigated asshat and now, now he refused to die?

Well he could jog right on.

Dying hands wrapped around her throat and Vega's lips lifted in a snarl as her hand opened. For the briefest trill, as Praetorum spoke two words "with me", it looked like Vega was going to open hand slap Rhaum, but that - of course - was not it. She opened her hand above the place where his head had ripped open and her sword - Melody - flew from it's scabbard at her waist and into her hand. As she did, the peal of an echoing bell rang out, not unnerving to those who she considered allies but - Vega hoped - just unnerving enough to those she considered enemy. Surely, she figured, they were pretty unnerved already?

Losers.

Either way, she knew. She understood battle more clearly than everTactics boosted from Expert to Master and she saw what it was doing. It was bursting out of Rhaum and, as it did, it was starting this whole nonsense again. Vega didn't know what this thing was. She didn't care. It was the gnarly little critter that had been living inside the Pimpernickel and - perhaps - it was the uber-gem. The one gem to end them all.

Whether it was, or it was not, it was flibbertying her gibbet.

And so, her hand closed around her sword and she drove it down. Down, through the very top of this ugly little monster's head. Down, through it's neck and down, down, to where it's shrivelled heart would be if it had one. Vega's intention was simple.

She would skewer it, from the top of its head to the tip of it's pointy little toes, piercing the very place it was protecting, as she literally impaled it into the ground. And if another gnarly little thing broke out of it? She'd be sure to kill that, too. As she did it, as she put all her effort into killing, just killing, and not for one moment defending, Snaffle, her diri, wrapped around her in Brightgleam Armour - except, of course, Vega was more than just Vega now.

Now, she was the Avatar of Lovalus, too, and her Diri was protecting both her Warden, and the Induk of the Lake.

We don't run......

New Sword!
A masterwork sea blue crystal sword forged from the body of Perfection. This sword is nearly as hard as Adamantite and slices just as cleanly. On the flat of the sword several words will appear when the blade is held in the right light that only Vega can see. The words are: "May You Never Break".

Melodic Ballad:Melody is unique as it 'sings' when the blade in swung creating a bright resonate tone that sounds similar to the sharp peal of an echoing bell.

38 Vhalar 720
What in the Beneath was happening in the other fight? As soon as the bolts of lightning shot down and the ravens fell lifelessly to the floor, Balthazar shifted his attention to the enemy that was still moving. His mind lingered for a trill on his responsibility to Vri, having potentially just killed Icarus, but before he could do anything about that he had to handle the remaining thread. Vega drove her sword through Rhaum's head and rather than end the battle, as one would expect a stab in the eye to, Rhaum became something monstrous. Praetorum barked for Woe and Balthazar to join him, then leapt into the battle at close range. Balthazar was good with his hands, very good, but he didn't immediately want to get close to the thing the others were fighting.

The way he saw it- lightning had done the job twice before, it would do the job again. He didn't need to get close to hit the monster with it, he just didn't know where he was going to strike. Vega had cleaved the beast's head nearly in half with her sword and it was still moving so the typical weaknesses did not seem to matter. That was when he saw the arms clutching over the stomach of the fleshy mass. That looks like a target. Praetorum crashed into the beast with his shield and Balthazar's arms began to spark again. Vega, Varlum, Vivian, now Praetorum... maybe he could move in... no. No more. Balthazar's posture loosened slightly and he stepped back from the battle, watching the other defenders of Rharne as they hacked and slashed away at the creature.

He had done enough and they did not need another blade in the slaughter. He did not need to have his hand in this kill and it seemed they did not need it. He moved slowly towards the dead crows on the ground, keeping an eye on the battle with the monster that had once been Rhaum, and when he was near enough to them Balthazar reached out to attune to the birds to ensure that they were dead and to see if he could find out anything about the man who had been there moments before while the others tore the monster apart.
