[Warrick] Lost in the Twilight Snow

9 Cylus, 717

The twins had only been alive for thirty five days, and already, Lei'lira couldn't imagine her life without them. They seemed to sleep for most of the day, but their sleep came in small spans, usually no more than a couple of breaks at a time. When they were awake, their needs came first. Whether they needed to be fed, or changed, or simply wanted to be with their mother, Lei'lira stopped whatever she was doing at the time so she could give them what they needed.

The small family had finally found a routine that seemed to work well for them. Lei'lira was tired most of the time, but she had learned to take short naps whenever she got the chance, much the same way her children did. It wasn't enough for her to feel well rested, but she was better off than she had been in the trials following their birth.

Another thing Lei'lira had learned was more of an instinct than an actual lesson. As time passed, she seemed to develop the ability to know when the twins were about to wake up. Often, if she was taking a nap herself, she would wake up a few bits before they did. So when Lei'lira found herself abruptly awake, her first thought was to listen for the twins. Sure enough, their familiar wails filled the room even as she got up to check on them.

Tiran was closer, so Lei'lira reached for him first. His diaper needed to be changes, and Lei'lira did so, while singing softly in the hopes of soothing Taerin long enough for her to deal with her brother. It seemed to help a little since although Taerin didn't stop crying completely, her cries softened, and took on a less urgent tone. And in a few bits, both of the babies were dry, and happy.

Lei'lira made herself comfortable as she held one child in each arm, and positioned them so they could nurse at the same time. It was a difficult task, and her arms often ached by the time they were done, but it saved time. More importantly, it kept both of her children happy when one didn't have to wait for the other to drink their fill before getting their own meal.

"Just think; in another few arcs, I won't be able to do this anymore. You'll both be running around, doing your own thing, exploring this strange, wonderful world you live in. I think I'm actually going to miss holding you guys like this."

Tiran made a happy sound, and Lei'lira grinned at him.

"Let's just hope that the two of you skip "no clothes" phase that I had when I was around two arcs old."

Taerin burbled at her, and Lei'lira blew a raspberry on her exposed belly. This seemed to thrill the baby to no end until her hunger distracted her once more, and she went back to nursing.

"My parents always used to tell me that when I was about two or three arcs old, I hated wearing clothes. At the first possible chance I got, I was taking everything off, and running through the house, shrieking in glee at my success. They never knew if something about the clothes made me uncomfortable, or if I hated the colors, or what. All they knew was that if they took their eyes off of me for a trill, I was gleefully pulling off my clothes, and racing through the house until they could catch me. Between you and me, I think I thought I had come up with a hilarious new game to play. But you two aren't going to do anything like that, are you?"

The twins looked up at her and cooed.

"Yeah...that's what I thought. Somehow, I think I'm going to have my hands full with you guys. Just don't team up against me too much, okay? Two against one isn't fair. Remember that."

Tiran made a sound that sounded a little bit as though he was chortling at her. Lei'lira responded by sticking her tongue out at him. This seemed to amuse him to no end, and Lei'lira laughed at his antics.

"Well, I suppose I'll manage somehow. Maybe this is payback for all the trouble I gave my parents, hmm? If nothing else, I'll know better than to let you guys anywhere near the door if you go through the same phase that I did. There was one time that I managed to get outside after I'd taken all of my clothes off. My pants were still clinging around my ankles, so they came with me when I made my escape. Somehow, I made it all the way to the stream on our land before my parents were able to catch up to me. They've told me this story so many times that it's almost like I can remember it myself. Apparently, when they finally did catch up with me, I was holding my pants in one hand. And when my mother scooped me up, I dropped them right into the stream, where they were washed away by the current before my parents could do anything. And that, my little ones, is how I lost my pants!"

[Warrick] Lost in the Twilight Snow

The twins were drifting off to sleep, so Lei'lira gave them one last cuddle before settling them back down to sleep. Then it was time to get to work. Her ewes were due to drop their lambs any trial now, so Lei'lira tried to check up on them several times a trial. To make her task easier, she had moved all twenty ewes into the same pasture until they gave birth, rather than keep them separated by breed.

When she went to check up on the flock, she discovered that eleven of them had already given birth. She had read that twins were common with sheep, and she was gratified to see that it was true. Several of the ewes had given birth to twins. The remaining eight ewes looked as though they could drop at any time. Since the others had done so on their own with no difficulty that she could see, Lei'lira hoped that the others would do so as well.

Wait...that only makes nineteen ewes. I own twenty.

Lei'lira immediately began searching for the missing ewe. If she had escaped somehow, then she would freeze to death before dawn unless she could find her. Much to her relief, Lei'lira found the ewe in an isolated corner of the pasture, surrounded by hay bales tor warmth. She was in labor, but she was in no difficulty that Lei'lira could see. Her presence seemed to make the ewe uneasy, so since she didn't appear to be in any distress, Lei'lira decided to let her be.

She went back to the rest of the flock, and examined the lambs. Lei'lira didn't know that much about sheep yet, but they looked healthy from what she could tell. None of the lambs had any obvious injuries, and they seemed to be standing, and moving well. None of the ones who were nursing had any difficulty in doing so. And their eyes were bright and clear, not dull and listless the way they might be if they were sick.

The snow was starting to pick up, so Lei'lira decided to head inside for a bit to check in on the twins. Snow or not, the animals needed to cared for, but that didn't mean that Lei'lira couldn't take shelter in the warmth of her cottage, and wait for it to let up a bit from time to time. Tiran and Taerin were still sleeping peacefully, so after Lei'lira had given herself a short time to warm up again in front of the fire, it was back out again to deal with the animals.

This time, she headed to the barn. She had mucked out the stalls earlier in the trial, but Star had been favoring her right foreleg slightly, and she wanted to check up on that. At the time, she'd heard the twins start crying, and she'd had to go to them. Since Star didn't show any other signs of distress besides favoring her leg a little, Lei'lira's choice was clear. She wasn't even certain that Star was injured at all. But now that the twins were sleeping, she didn't want to take the chance that she was, and have the injury get worse out of neglect.

Lei'lira could tell that something was wrong the moment she saw the mare. Star's limp wasn't any more pronounced than it had been when she'd first noticed it. And really, it was more that she seemed to be shifting her weight off of her right foreleg more than an actual limp. But now that she was actively searching for signs of distress, Lei'lira could see it clearly.

"Well, then. Let's see what's wrong with that leg of yours, my friend." Lei'lira murmured soothingly as she put Star's halter on, and led her out of her make shift stall and into the barn proper.

Lei'lira squatted down, and began rubbing her hands over the injured leg lightly, trying to see if she could feel any signs of an injury. She was so busy with what she was doing that she didn't even notice the mouse until it had run across Star's hoof. The mare acted predictably; she squealed in fright, ears falling back against her head as she stumbled back in her efforts to escape the mouse, yanking her leg out of Lei'lira's hands in the process. Then she bolted, knocking Lei'lira over as she fled the barn.

For several trills, all Lei'lira could do was stare at the open barn door in dismay. She had no choice but to leave it open. The dim twilight coming through the windows of the barn didn't offer enough light to see by, especially when she needed to be able to see clearly enough to detect the faint signs of a minor injury. But fire was one of the biggest dangers possible in a barn, and there was no way that Lei'lira was going to bring an open flame into her barn if she had any other choice in the matter. Instead, she had left the barn door wide open, hoping that the added light, dim as it was, would be enough for her to be able to see by.

Everything had happened so quickly, that Lei'lira had had no chance to react in time to prevent the spooked mare from bolting. But she had to act quickly now; Star's life depended on it. Lei'lira scrambled to her feet. There were no signs of the mouse that had started it all. And while the other horses seemed mildly alarmed by Star's panicked flight, they were already starting to settle down. Kaiyu's and Smokey's pregnancies were too far advanced for them to be ridden now, and Stormy's moods were too unpredictable for her to deal with now, so Lei'lira entered Lightning's stall with a saddle, and bridle.

She moved as quickly as she dared, without risking spooking the mare by moving too quickly as she saddled her. Lightning inhaled deeply as Lei'lira was trying to tighten the girth of the saddle, but she caught the mare's trick, and gave her a sharp thump to force her to exhale. When she was ready to ride, Lei'lira tied the reins to a post, before shutting the barn door firmly behind her. It was too cold for Lightning to be left outside while she went to get the twins.

The twins were still sleeping soundly, and Lei'lira hated to wake them, but she was left with little choice in the matter. She didn't know how long she would be gone, and she couldn't leave her children alone. So she bundled them up against the cold as best she could, and got into her own cloak as well. When she was ready, she led Lightning out of the barn, and mounted her as best she could with the twins nestled under her cloak. Star's tracks were clearly visible in the snow, and Lei'lira took note of what direction they were headed in; with luck, she would still be able to follow them after she dropped the twins off with her closest neighbor. But with the snow falling steadily as it was, she couldn't be sure of that. Once she was certain she knew which way Star had gone, she gave the command to walk with her legs, and she was off.

“The smell reminds me of home.” Lei'lira murmured softly as she entered her neighbor's farm, and headed towards the barn, where the warm glow of a lantern drew her.

It wasn't surprising, really. One barn tended to smell much like another. But it was a familiar, comforting scent, and Lei'lira drew strength from it. She would need all the strength she could get to find Star.

The ride from her farm to her neighbor's had been long, and exhausting. Carrying the twins as she was, she was unable to use the reins to direct Lightning. Fortunately, she remembered a lesson from her father when she was young. He had told her that a horse was sensitive enough to be able to feel even the slightest movement from anyone on its back, and that was why it was so easy to give a horse mixed signals. He'd also taught her that a horse could be directed by one's seat and legs as well with the reins. It had taken her a little while to get the hang of it, but she remembered that leaning forward in the saddle would send a trained horse into a walk, and that putting pressure on the side opposite of where you wanted to go would turn a horse. She'd used those techniques as best she could, and with more than a little trial and error, she'd managed to get to her neighbor's farm in with all four of them in one piece.

Lei'lira could hear music coming from the house, but her arrival must have been heard even over the strains of music, because her neighbor came rushing out of the barn in a hurried walk.

"Goodness, Lei'lira! What in the world could possibly be so urgent to have you riding out here in a storm like this?" she asked anxiously.

"And are those the twins you have bundled under your cloak?"

Lei'lira nodded tiredly as Reia took the twins so she could dismount."

"Star spooked over a mouse in the barn when I was checking her for an injury. I can't leave her out in this; she'd freeze to death. But I can't leave the twins alone, and I can't take them with me, either...would you watch them until I can find Star? Please?" Lei'lira begged.

"Of course I will! Don't you worry about your children, Lei'lira. The twins will be just fine with us until you can come for them. We'll have a grand time of it. My cousin's visiting us from Andaris. She's a well known bard up in the city, you know. That's who you hear playing now. My kids just love to hear her play. Arla's got them all convinced that they want to be bards when they grow up too, so they can run off to the city, and make a fortune! Well, I don't know about that, but Arla does say that my son, Radhiel, has quite a bit of talent. So maybe he will become a bard some day. But what am I doing, gossiping with you when you have an injured horse to find? Go on, now. You go find that mare of yours. I know how important she is to you. Tiran, and Taerin will be just fine with us until you come back."

Lei'lira thanked her neighbor sincerely, deeply grateful for her willingness to look after the twins while she was gone. Reia insisted that she drink a hot cup of tea to fortify her for the search. The sweet smelling tea was filled with herbs that Lei'lira couldn't quite identify, but it tasted delicious, and Reia promised that it would give her strength for the search. When she was finished, she handed the mug back to her neighbor, and headed on her way.

[Warrick] Lost in the Twilight Snow

By the time Lei'lira got back home, Star's tracks were partially filled with snow, and difficult to see. But since she remembered which direction the mare had gone, Lei'lira was still able to follow them. The storm turned what would normally be a familiar landscape into a strange, and hostile world, but Lei'lira refused to let it phase her; she was determined to find Star. As she searched, all she could hear was the raging storm, and she soon lost all track of time.

Please, Moseke...I don't know if you'll listen to someone who is only half Sev'ryn. Especially when I don't live in Desnind. But I am still one of your people, half breed, or not. And you did seem interested in Lei'luna when I met you in Ne'haer, so...please let me find Star. She's more than just a horse to me. She's one of my closest friends. Please let me find her safe and sound. And let me find her soon, so she doesn't freeze to death out here. Lei'lira prayed as hard as she could.

She didn't know how long she had been out searching for the mare. Nor did she know how much longer she had before night fell. Between the dim twilight of Cylus, and the low visibility of the storm, it was nearly impossible to see, and every trill she spent out here felt like an eternity. So her sense of time passing was completely off balance. What she did know was that when night fell, it wouldn't get any darker due to the season, but it would get colder. No one, person, or animal would survive the night out here if left without shelter.

A faint, frantic whinny drifted to her through the wind; Lei'lira increased her speed, and changed direction to follow it. It was as if Moseke had answered her prayer, and Lei'lira refused to allow the first sign that she was getting closer to her lost mare go to waste. And her efforts paid off. Before long, she found Star trapped in a snow drift, frantically trying to escape. Not daring to dismount, and risk Lightning running off if the storm spooked her, Lei'lira guided Lightning so that she was alongside the drift. Then she reached out, and took hold of the halter Star was wearing. Gentle caresses, and the presence of something familiar slowly calmed the terrified mare down enough that Lei'lira was able to try to free her.

It took quite a bit of effort on both their parts, but after a while, the trapped mare came free in an explosion of snow. Lei'lira resisted the equally powerful urges to shout her triumph into the storm, and to break down into hysterical tears of relief. Neither action was going to help her get them all home safely. By the time Star was free, there were no traces of the trail Lightning and Lei'lira had made to get there. Her own senses were utterly confused by the storm. It was a risk, but she gave Lightning her head, and let the mare choose the direction they went in.

Progress was slow because Lei'lira had to maintain her balance on the mare she was riding while keeping hold of Star's halter so she wouldn't get lost again. But they did make progress, and eventually, they came to a solid wall. Lei'lira followed it until they came to a very distinctive door. It was the door to a neighbor's barn. Unfortunately, it was locked, so Lei'lira couldn't take shelter inside until the storm died down enough that it would be safe to travel. But she knew what direction she needed to travel in, so she turned Lightning and Star where they needed to go, and set off once more.

[Warrick] Lost in the Twilight Snow

By the time they made it back to her barn, Lei'lira and the two mares were all exhausted. The snow had died down slightly; enough to make visibility less uncertain, but travel was still difficult due to the vicious, bitterly cold wind. Lei'lira dismounted, and quickly rubbed both mares dry. When she was done with that, she ran her hands up and down Star's right foreleg gently. When she didn't feel any heat in the leg, she was relieved. Heat would have indicated inflammation, which would have meant an injury. But Star was still favoring her leg, so Lei'lira picked it up to see if she could see a problem with the hoof itself. A small stone had lodged itself into her hoof. Feeling relieved that it wasn't something worse, Lei'lira got her hoof pick, and carefully worked the stone out.

Both horses deserved a nice warm mash to warm them up after the time they spent in the storm. So Lei'lira filled two buckets with a pound of bran in each. Then she made her way to her cottage. Once there, she began boiling enough water to soften the bran. She didn't have a pot large enough to boil that much water at once, so it took her several times to get enough water. Fortunately, each time she added new boiling water to the bran, it heated up the slowly cooling mixture back up to a boil.

The bran needed to steep for fifteen bits, so Lei'lira used the time to give the two mares a quick grooming. The process comforted both her, and the horses, so it was well worth the effort. By the time she was finished, the bran mashes were ready, so Lei'lira stirred in a little hint of molasses, and bits of dried apple to sweeten the mash. Then she offered one to each mare. Both mares were hungry from their exertions, so it was a welcome treat for them. And it would help to warm them up after their time in the storm.

After she had seen to the needs of her horses, it was time to go fetch her children. Lei'lira eyed Stormy thoughtfully. She was the only mare she had that was in any shape to ride at the moment, and it was unwise to ride a stallion into a strange farm. Stormy was a good mare, but if she was in one of her moods, she wouldn't work well until she was appeased. And seeing two of her herd mates get warm mashes while she did not would be enough to make her jealous. Waiting until Star and Lightning had recovered wasn't an option, so Lei'lira got her grooming brushes out once more to see if a nice, through grooming was enough of a bribe to work her out of her mood.

When Stormy leaned into the brush strokes, her ears flickering towards her as Lei'lira praised her, she knew that she had succeeded. So once she had finished, she saddled Stormy, and headed into the storm once more.
