Unfamiliar Wings (Nightshade)

Image
The half-breed continued nodding along until the pair was interrupted. Her attention turning with curiosity. There was almost a spike of pity in her heart, that people had to be so desperately afraid of something as important as history. She'd always lived on the outside, been one of 'them' in essence. So she graceful ignored the comment about race with a slight fluff of her wings and a passive look. Or at least what one could assume was passive considering the blankness of her features. In reality, her emotions quickly took on a stance which was best described as seething. Not towards the man who had warned them, he was as much a victim fo the system as any, but of those who approached after him. Their tones haughty and their personalities 'mighty'.

Listen, they bid, for we are cowards and must overcompensate so that you know we are brave. Listen so that you know how much we fit in with the rest of Etzos as immortal haters. Listen as we so blindly ignore our only weapons against those who might cause true danger.

She listened quietly, her eyes narrowed as she listened to Dru speak. The woman brought up a great many points that were burning at the tip of Night's own tongue. But there was still more to be said. As Dru turned to her and asked if she had anything she'd like to add the woman smiled warmly. She was able to understand the meaning of the word based off everything she'd heard from Dru, and so she rolled with it rather easily. "Oh, there are a thousand things I could say, but a child doesn't understand why adults talk about the monsters hiding under their bed. They couldn't possibly see the value in knowledge when taking a fight to an enemy. After all, that's tactic may be a little too far in the future for these lovely young gentlemen," the half-breed leaned her head on her hand sightly, her pose completely relaxed as she crossed her legs.

"Of course, they obviously wouldn't know or care much for tact. They fawned over a man who tried to kill Xuir while I was taking off the antenna of Lissira! You know, one of the imminent threats to the city? I have fought and risked my life countless times over for the sake of this city. Because I want a city that doesn't have to live in fear. And I'm sorry to say, but little encounters like these are the exact reason we do," it was uncertain if she was actually trying to scold them or if she was just buying enough time for guards to get there and deal with the situation peacefully. Either way, someone would have gotten the guards by now. "Your losses? They're valid. I've had countless loved ones die in my arms and more yet turn their back on me when the pickings got slim. But really? History teaches us a lesson about how to not repeat these accidents. Maybe if we went into battle knowing half a lick about the beings we were fighting, knowing their weaknesses, maybe there could have been fewer deaths. Maybe your friends, your family, maybe they still would have been alive. Maybe I would have kept more people alive if I'd better understood how to fight them back then. But we didn't. And I'm not going to neglect the most powerful weapon of all just because the history that goes with it might be a bit upsetting to some. It's a cowardly thought that only leads to more bloodshed and more of us losing our families and our lives.

"Now calm down, and think for a moment about what you're doing. Is this going to bring your family back? Is this going to do any good? How will this help you in any way, shape, or form besides wasting that aggressive energy that could be put into something that will yield more fruitful results? I'm not saying forget your wrath. It's a powerful tool. But direct it a little better and direct it in places that will actually do some good. There are raiders and bandits and drug lords out there actively killing our citizens, doing a hell of a lot more harm than a pair of young women discussing history. Go join the guard and do something useful with that hate.

"With that out of the way, I have no intention of attacking you. Unprovoked. But I have no intention of letting you hurt them," the motioned towards Dru, "so think very hard about if this is a fight that will prove beneficial. Or even if it's a fight you can win," she wasn't trying to be intimidating as she spoke those words. But there was a weight that sat on them. The kind of weight that truly spoke to the road she'd walked and how much strength she truly had.

MOD BOMB II

Image
The men formed a loose circle around the three "subjects" as the naer said her piece, "Kids have enough sense to mind their own business, Rikki. You don't need to be worryin' about them." The men on the left said, using a slang of Naerikk. "Worry about yerself, instead. You shoulda' took a lesson from them. I may just have to spank you now." he sneered as the one on the far right just laughed, low and lustfully, as his eyes travelled up and down the naerikk's body.

"Yeah, give us a lecture on the great morality of your matron queen of deception; queen of lyin' bitches." The leader took over again. "Look at you, hiding behind one of the heroes that fought against her." he gestured at Night, and now addressed his comments to her as well, "And what about that, Miss Nightee-night? You know it's true. She was your enemy that trial. Now, you're protectin' her chickie here. Don't you see this'n's usin' her naerikk tricks on you?"

"Twistin' her mind like braided leather. Got her flappin' her lips as much as her wings!" one of the voices added from behind. "Gonna use you to do her dirty work. You talk about Lisirra? Well, the only good thing her queen did was betrayin' Lisirra." The target of his words kept alternating between one woman and the other, "But that comes real natural to yer Mama, don't it, Rikki? Can't trust her any more'n we can trust you. Fly off, Nightshade. Let your mind get clear of this one's spell."

The men slowly advanced as Night finished her responses; closing up the gaps between themselves as nearby vendors insisted upon not noticing what was going on. "May not bring 'em back, Miss Nightee-night, but it'll be worth a white stone in their Window." the leader said, referring to the beliefs of the Etzos-specific religion, Signalism. "You may be worth two of us, with your wings and your swords, but sissy boy ain't worth half o' one. That still leaves two of us for Rikki, here....Take 'em!"

Unspoken, but cleary prearranged, strategy went into immediate effect as the two behind the three victims went for Nightshade with the intent of hindering the spread of her wings, while getting a grip on her arms at the same time. One went with only half-hearted seriousness toward Herrick, who was already crouching in what looked like terror, as the remaining two leaped at Adruria.

The initial undoing of their strategy was in their poor estimation of Herrick's capability in a fight. His act was a feint. He had no weapons because he needed none. Had these men not used unfair numbers, or shown honor in any other way, he might have been motivated to hold back his training in Ki'Enaq Street Style. And the strangled screams of his would-be attacker also served to distract the focus of those converging on the two females.

As the men began to talk again Adruria rolled her eyes and sighed clearly not wanting to do this at all. But the men had decided this path was the one they wanted. Adruria sneered as the first called her a Rikki, "My aren't you a clever little one. Did you come up with that insult all by yourself?" She spoke in a voice one might use to coo over a baby. When the second spoke up she retorted at him as well, "Yep using Naer trickery you caught me. It's a mind control technique called being mature and civil... You should try it sometime... Wait I forgot normally bloodthirsty goons such as yourselves can't use such magic." She shook her head in shame and shifted her weight. She ignored the last two men who spoke. She knew what was going to happen.

When the men went to their positions Adruria was already ready for the attack. She slowly exhaled and swung her body and while she wasn't that tall, she was mostly leg."You stupid men and your bloodlusts!" Her foot collided with the first man's skull with an audible crack noise and he crumpled to the ground in a heap, she had missed the targeted area on the skull hitting him more towards the jaw. She may have broken his jaw.To be safe she kicked his sword away. She'd worry about that later, as he wouldn't be getting up for awhile. Right now there was another one to take down. The second man charged and swung at her. But, thanks the surprise of her kick he had looked at his downed buddy. That gave her time to prepare for the next strike. She was able to dodge the sword fairly easily. After the second man's swing she rushed him and proceeded to grab the man's arm and twisting it into a strange position causing him to drop his sword, which was quickly kicked away. Sadly the man recovered faster than Dru thought he would and he landed a few blows hitting her in the jaw, one to the stomach, and one that grazed her shoulder. Regaining her balance she swung at him and with some effort she swung her body around and planting a kick to the man's rib cage, an impact that if it didn't break a rib or two certainly knocked the breath out of him. Lunging forward Dru caught him in a sleeper hold dragging him to the ground. As the man struggled to stay conscious desperately clawing at her arms, Dru teased between spitting out blood, "What? You kept mentioning Nightee-Night so that's where your going. Say Night Night!"The baby voice was back. Finally the struggle slowly stopped and the man was released and dropped to the ground. "Nightee-Night!"

Adruria turned to check on Night, however judging by the moans and groans of her attackers she was fine and Herrick had killed the man after him the instant he attacked. "Damn Herrick, you sure had me fooled I was worried how we were going to keep you safe." Adruria wiped the blood from the side of her mouth and sat, rotated her arm slowly checking her shoulder. "I really need to get back to my training like I did back home." She shook her head and sighed, "Get back to running four times a day..." She gave her jaw a pop.

She looked at the downed men. most alive but in pain. "So what do we do with them? Tie them up? Take them somewhere? Leave them like this? Whatever we do I say we check their pockets and take their swords. They've just proved that they can't have such dangerous toys. More useless than Korrikalari!"She looked at both Night and Herrick. "It means a delinquent slave."

Unfamiliar Wings (Nightshade)

The moment the men opened their mouths to start forming their idiotic retorts she knew where this situation was going, her mind zeroing in on everything around her. She shifted her stance in small ways as they talked, moving to stand so that her weight was evenly distributed, well as lowering herself just so slight so that her center of the balance was closer to the ground. Not enough to really be taken into account by the men, but enough she could drop lower the moment the fight broke out if someone attacked her. She instantly became more aware of the men in the area. She liked to think she was a fairly observant person, observant enough to take a good note of the men who were shifting behind her. She could hear the way they moved, listening closely to their voices and the noise caused by the ways they moved. How they breathed, the rustle of their clothing or armor, the distance between herself and their voices. Taking stock of the situation she waited quietly for the bomb to drop.

And drop it did. With a single signal, she could hear movement behind her coming at her and she noticed some of the people dashing at her companions. For the time being, she zeroed in on her own problems. She tried to quickly analyze the situation. They were all younger looking men with a wide assortment of size and nature. She didn't have time to pull out her blade and she didn't want to risk it given the situation. Killing any of them wouldn't bode very good for the situation as there was a noticeably torn crowd starting to look on at the group that had broken into fights. Most were just confused, not having paid attention to the girls and not knowing why the fight had started. There was a small number who were either in support of the men or the girls, but it didn't really matter much for the moment. If she pulled out her weaponry it would just lead a giant mess. The worst idea was the fact that someone from the crowd might get hurt.

There was one other option. The two men charging her didn't have weapons. She hadn't seen them and hadn't heard them become unsheathed. Mostly it seemed as though they were charging in an attempt to grapple as opposed to Dru, her enemies seeming intent kill. Maybe their strategy would have worked if Night was only good with a sword. But for the first 14 arcs of her life, she was severely bullied and the only weapon she ever had access to was what came with her own body. Suffice to say after getting fed up with the farmer's kids the half-breed taught herself more or less how to fight. She was a little out of practice, but she was confident in the fact she'd be able to win.

She listened carefully, having to pick the perfect timing. One pair of footsteps was approaching slightly faster than the other. Perfect. The moment she felt a hand brushing against her shoulder she reached for it. Taking hold of the dangerous and foreign appendage she reached back, her left arm keeping a grip on the arm that had tried to grab her right shoulder, while her right arm twisted backward to grab the shirt of her offender. With a massive heave, she used all of the strength her small body held and flung the man right over her shoulder, bringing him forward to slam his back against the earth with every ounce of strength she possibly possessed. Adding on a vicious yank she could hear the pop that was associated with the dislocation of a shoulder.

It had taken a lot of strength and energy to pull off the move. The half-breed had a lot of strength in her arms and upper body thanks to constant sword training and flights, but it had still taken a great deal of effort to bring someone so close to her own weight over her shoulder and slam him against the earth. A momentary pause allowed the second man, who'd paused in shock for a trill, to grab onto her. She could feel him yanking viciously at her shoulder, her fingers desperately searching her feathers for where the actual wing was at. She yelped slightly and twisted around as best she could. Opening her hand flat she stuck out with her open palm. The man was taller than her by a good head so she aimed her attack upwards and towards his nose. There was a satisfying crack and a gush of blood as the attack connected, the force and the angle easily breaking his nose. The main recoiled for a moment stumbling backwards.

Turning to the man clutching his broken nose she held up her arms in a basic block, intended to fight him and still assuming that the other man was out for the count. A foolish decision as she cried out slightly, a sharp jab revealing itself in her middle back as the second man recovered and punched her. It was weaker than it could have been and the half-breed assumed it was because she'd managed to dislocate his dominant arm. At least it was a small victory. She was able to keep her guard up as the second man attacked her, his punch colliding with her left forearm. She had to thank her fortune that the woman had been more ambidextrous, so even if one of her own arms got broken she wouldn't be completely out for the count.

After blocking the broken-nosed man's attack she quickly returned a counter strike, aiming for his cheek. She put as much force as she could into the strike, allowing her momentum to help carry the attack and putting all of her weight and strength into it. The man went down like a sack of potatoes, finally knocked out. That just left her with one more problem she had to deal with. And she knew just how to handle it.

Turning on her heels she waved her fist slightly. The skin of her knuckles was split, likely because she hadn't sparred in a while. The skin was weak, so the force of her attack had managed to hurt her a little as well. Call it recoil damage or something of the like. It was why most powerful unarmed brawlers tended to use gloves. Gloves however also softened punches. The truly strong simply trained their bodies until nothing could hurt them, making it so that the skin would never break by punching enough people in the face. Always an option but not a very fun one truth be told, perhaps the half-breed would invest in some knuckle dusters later down the road.

With the last guy standing in front of her, one arm hanging limp and a look of fear on his face, the half-breed spared him one smirk. With one last vicious stride, she lifted up her leg and pushed it forward, hitting the man in the solar plexus with her heel. He didn't' stand a chance, collapsing to the ground without much more of a fight. The half-breed sighed heavily wiping a little sweat off of her brow as he went down. This wasn't how she expected to spend the morning to be completely honest, but she'd had worst mornings so she guessed it was still a win.

"We should find a group of guards to alert, they can deal with them as they please. No matter how many ways you twist the laws we left our immortals at the door and upheld the spirit of the rule. Furthermore, the only 'true' laws against immortals is one barring public worship. While these lovely gents, on the other hand, have multiple cases of assault and disturbance of the peace resting on their shoulders," she said with a roll of her eyes as they darted around, trying to locate any Black Guards she could within the area. Surely the scuffle itself should have attracted some attention. It (sadly) wouldn't be the first time she'd had to ask the Black Guards to deal with someone she knocked out. It wouldn't be the last...

"Please don't check their pockets," the half-breed sighed. "I discourage you not to take their weapons as they would more or less be stealing and I'm technically working with the Black Guard if you really stretch the with, but if I turned around to look for the guard and look back to see the weapons gone I'm not looking for them," she said with the smallest amount of a smirk entering her tone despite her best efforts to keep her expression straight. "As for that working out comment, after we deal with this I might have an idea for you."

MOD BOMB III

It was surely only because Herrick had only dealt with a single assailant. But it was noteworthy that the Old Guard employee was the only one without a mark on him, save a few streaks of dirt. He stepped up to interpose himself as an obstacle to collecting or removing any of the thugs' weapons. "No, no ladies. You really should not touch anything that could be evidence. If the guard comes and finds unarmed "victims", rather than armed and disabled assailants, it could go badly; or at least take much longer to sort out."

He looked around skeptically, "And we certainly don't want to be dependant on the testimony of these local merchants." As if in response, several faces disappeared in a wink back behind boards and hanging cloths that served as the walls of market booths. It served as a catalyst for a remarkably sudden dispersal of the crowd of spectators. The only lingering contact between any of the departing citizens was accompanied by comments relating to wagers that had been made on the outcome.

"I'm the only one that killed anyone." Herrick continued, "We need to keep it that way." The sound of approaching metal-clad feet answered any questions as to why Herrick suddenly sighed and held his hands out to accommodate shackles. Four Black Guard troops arrived to take a quick look around and accept Herrick's surrender.

The apparent leader of the squad snorted in recognition of the men sprawled moaning on the ground. "Thank you ladies...Herrick, if you will come with us?" He said with a short, swift bow. He then raised his voice to address the mysteriously absent crowd. "I guess since there are no witnesses other than these ladies, there will be no contest to their testimony regarding this incident. Is that correct?"

There was no counter testimony offered...

Anticipating protest from Night and her friend, regarding Herrick's arrest, the lead guardsman waved dismissively and gave a light shake of the head. "Don't worry about Herrick here. We're well aware of how things go down where he's involved. Since no one else here is going to stick their neck out, yours will be the only pertinent testimony taken. No contest, really. It's just a formality, but we are obliged to detain him while you make your statements."

He gave a pointed look to his squad and nodded to the bodies now beginning to stir on the ground. The other troopers rounded the men and weapons up, and bound their arms behind them, giving little concern to the injures they'd sustained from their embarrassment. The squad leader looked at the last body, lying still with staring eyes, "Too bad, Jaryn. You rolled skull-eyes this time."

Adruria groaned at Herrick, "Fine, take all the fun out of it..." Taking the swords was just lighthearted fun to her, they had attacked her and Night and lost. Spoils to the winners! Apparently that didn't apply here... "Just know I'm taking you out to dinner one of these days, Herrick. You saved my rear. The least I can do." She gave the man a smile. Things seemed alright now, the market had mostly returned to normal around them.

Still sore Dru rotated her arm evaluating her shoulder, while looking down at the men. Now that the fight was over and the adrenaline gone, better strategies came to her now. Things she could of done differently. Yeah a fine help this was after the fight... She replayed the fight in her head. She could of taken the sword of the first downed guy... She was very unskilled with swords.. But it would of made parrying the second man's sword easier. The fight replayed once again in her mind each time she changed one decision she had made prior watching in her mind's eye how it could of played out. She needed to work on her defense. That much was obvious to her.

As the Black Guard arrived Adruria lazily found a seat near Night and watched as they hauled the attackers away. "Might wanna be careful with that one..." She spoke absentmindedly, "Think I might of broke his jaw.." The Guards addressed them. Statements? What statements? "Umm, if you really want to know what happened I can tell you right here. We were talking, these goons were looking for a fight and we tried to talk them down. They didn't see to take well to being civil and talking things out. Thus, we used self defense. Herrick helped us. Good thing too, I don't think either of us could of taken on a third attacker."

She watched as the guards left and sighed, "Well, that was pretty pointless..." Adruria turned to Nightshade, "Tell me, does this kind of thing happen often? I get the feeling Naer aren't well liked around here... But did I hear you right earlier? You have a sweetheart? And they're like you? Wow, seems like I'll be seeing a lot a Avian people now, how interesting..." Dru smiled. "Now what did I hear about an idea you had?"

"Also that," the half-breed said with a quick nod. She just hoped the guards were wise enough to confiscate the weapons for the offense. The half-breed could have sworn there was some kind of law that talked about the use and possession of weapons within the city. Out of caution, she didn't even unsheath her sword unless there was a fight, and even then, it was really only when she knew she couldn't take on the challenge barehanded. Something she was getting better at doing. Or at least trying to. Fists, though still dangerous, offered fewer opportunities of accidentally killing an opponent. Though, obviously enough, didn't eliminate them all. At least with the half-breed's fighting style someone usually wasn't going to die until she actively used her claws.

When the blackguard arrived the half-breed was somewhere between relieved and worried. She instantly felt herself relax when the guard gave a very obviously distasteful snort upon recognition of the group, and the half-breed had to hold back the slightest hint of a giggle bubbling at the back of her throat.

Shockingly enough, or not shockingly at all, the half-breed didn't put up much of a fight when the guard started to explain Herrick's situation. "Of course, formalities like this exist for a reason. You'll have no arguments," she said with a quick shake of her head, her hair dancing over her shoulders with the movement. Almost like she was expecting it. Almost like she was some kind of hero who broke up fights and ended up making a lot of extra paperwork for the guard captain. But that couldn't possibly be why she was so calm. No way!

The half-breed turned as Dru spoke, shrugging and offering a bittersweet smile. "Welcome to Etzos!" she said with a bit more of a genuine laugh wreathing the words. "It is in fact always like this. Either you eventually get used to it or build up enough of a reputation that most people stray away from fights. I've got a pretty good one on my shoulders when it comes to combat, so it's usually just idiots like these or the really big fish who decide they'd like to pick a fight. When I wake up it's usually a terrified coin flip of which one I'll end up having to deal with... but luckily I've only had one or two actual attempts on my life. As for my idea, a couple of trials ago I talked to the guard captain about letting me open up a shop to teach people the basics about combat. In case some asses like these decide beating up weaker people is more fun. I'm looking for workers, and I was wondering if you'd like to maybe try out. You don't have to decide yet, I'm holding two practice days of sorts at the end of the season. One that's for anyone to join and the other that's only open to potential workers. Think about it, if you like the idea they hit me up. You'll be able to find it easily enough, I'm calling it the Valkyrie's Roost. Cliche but I'm honestly in love with the name. Oh! But it's already so late! I really have to go I've got someone I need to talk to see you late bye!" She spat out in a hurried rush as she realized she was supposed to be teaching mutants how to fly in less than 10 bits. Curses.
