Awakened Response

10th trial of Ymiden, 716
Eddrick Brodon had no concern over the tracks he was leaving in the Hotlands sand. His mind had become increasingly focused on 'The Reader's puzzling pronouncement regarding him. He'd long since figured out the bit about the "two women", and how he was supposed to "let them kill you". Naturally, it was all just some cryptic twist on the encounter that had come with two women a few trials later. It had led to his - and their - installment in the Rahkrii Raiders, a well-known, well-feared bandit group operating primarily in the western half of the desert.

At least at that time they were keeping to the western half. It was where their two main strongholds were, both north of the city of Nashaki. But now they'd been out surveying new holds to the east. The other encounter there surely had some significance as far as other parts of the so-called "prophecy" were concerned. But did his inclusion into the bandit ranks have anything to do with it? The wandering seer had said something about him "joining the fight against the great enemy." The encounter in the east HAD involved a fight, but it was only about a half dozen on each side and had ended in a more or less stalemate after a few had died on each side.

But it was exact wording and inflection of the Reader's words that troubled him. The emphasis on "THE" Great Enemy. It was true that the small skirmish had involved the new northern power, the Raskithecal. Legions of one Immortal or another. Eddrick knew about the regular Ithecal; the ones from the island of Yithiral, or whatever. They occasionally turned up as slaves in Athart, which was where Eddrick was from. But these were different. It had pretty obviously been a scouting party, the same as his group had been.

It had him worried alright. A scouting party of some race he'd as yet only heard about. He'd heard about the Raskithecal from a Qi'ora diplomat from Nashaki, back when he was still a member of the Athartian Slave Raiders. He'd even had a subtle romance developing with her. But she'd been murdered, and he'd been blamed, and it was only the desperate desertion and escape that had kept his mind off his grief. He now hated Athart, and wanted greatly to redeem himself with Nashaki, more as tribute to her than anything else. She'd believed in her culture. But for all he knew, her death had been ordered by Nashaki and not Athart at all.

But she'd mentioned the aggressive Legions to the north, and how their maneuvers and war games had steadily advanced in Nashaki's direction. That was almost twelve arcs ago, and even then she'd feared an invasion would come "in the next ten arcs". So it seemed these Raskithecal were already two arcs overdue. And now he'd had an encounter with a scouting party way to the east. Well...that was not exactly Nashaki's back yard. But it could be the start of a slow political encirclement.

So now he was headed to Nashaki, and a different woman, one he'd freed from slavers as part of his need for atonement against his years as a slaver in Athart. His goal was not only to see if his standing with that city had changed from the "Wanted for questioning" status she'd told him of before, as well as to warn the city of possible attack by these "Rascals" to the north. He hoped, if nothing else, that this gesture may help convince any detractors that he was deserving of the benefit of the doubt.

He waved a stick remotely near his Poko mount's antennas, its sensitivity being more than sufficient to motivate the creature to pick up the pace. It warbled a deep insectoid rumble in return. He saw a dry riverbed and figured it was worth the attempt at gleaning some water from the soil below. He found a spot where the river turned and got out his shovel, smiling inwardly at how such a mundane implement was surely the most crucial thing he owned. The trick was to dig into the far bank, the one the long-gone current would have pushed against as it rounded the turn. And all he needed to find was mud. He'd learned well enough how to convert that to water.

As he dug, he considered the last item of prophecy. The Old Wanderer's words seemed to carry a lot of weight in the desert, and Eddrick hoped it would transfer to his own credibility with Nashaki. But the last bit, something about "bringing with you the howl." This was entirely too odd for any interpretation. Everyone knew that the caves of the Rahkrii howled with the wind. But if that was supposed to mean he was to bring his little bandit troop into the war, it was ridiculous. Eddrick knew damn well that the bandits were not going to join in a war. They'd be happy to help themselves to the spoils of a battlefield, and he understood that. Stones, he was their military strategist! He would never ask them to get themselves mixed up in this. But his own personal affairs were another matter.

He was well south of Nashaki, but hoped to glean a bit of water from the mud he was finding signs of, then perhaps the next day he would go north, and hope to find the ex-slave woman...what was her name?...Yulaine? Yuli-anne?

It took several bits, but Eddrick found muddy sand. He hurried back to his Poko and pulled a simple linen sock and a wide mouth jar from his supplies. This was not a tactic he particularly liked to employ, but his water skins were now dry, and he would use any technique before resorting to urine purification.

It was mostly just the knowledge that it was his own piss providing the water that made it so unsavory. It was actually purified beyond any realistic worry that he was actually drinking waste water. But the utensils used to evaporate the urine and collect the condensation on the specially shaped glass enclosure, so it would drip into the smaller, separate central container started to small like a privy after only a few uses. And he'd used his dozens of times.

It was warm when gathered and stank of urine from the implements being baked in the sun around a pool of his piss that made it so unpleasant, but there was truly no waste actually in it. This was the same technique they used to purify water from the Salt Lakes. Toxins, as well as wastes, did not evaporate along with the water, so they were not collected by the drip into the small container. After several arcs in the Hotlands, you got used to such things if it meant having water.

But the technique he now sought to use only led to a muddy taste in the water, so it was preferable by far. This involved nothing more than stuffing the sock with wet sand and wringing it. Either you actually got drops directly from the sand inside, or you got the sock itself damp enough that you could dump the sand back out and wring the empty sock for what few drops you could get. Done repeatedly, one could get enough water to survive on, though it tended to taste like you were licking the ground.

The only real obstacle was that this dry river site was right out in the open sun, and dehydration tended to offset whatever gain he'd make from his efforts. So he'd had to take the time to set up his small tent first. But that was nothing new. And he'd wisely chosen a beige colored tent when he'd made his escape from Athart, so it was not too noticeable.

But as he did his wringing and squeezing, he began to notice a sound, a low whistling moan. The wind had covered it most of the time he'd been at his water gathering efforts, but had dropped enough in intensity for a few bits to let the sound reach Eddrick's ears. His first thought was some sort of canine beast as he looked outside the tent for something, anything, approaching.

There was nothing to be seen, but with his hearing unhindered by the obstructed audio dynamics of being inside a tent, he could tell the sound was coming from the north of his present location. Squinting against the dust and heat waves, he could see the ground was oddly broken in that direction. It did not seem to follow the usual mottled look of rocky soil, and was definitely not a continuation of the sand he'd crossed to reach the dry stream bed.

But the moan continued with no apparent source. After transferring the muddy water into his skin, he rose and slowly made his way toward the sound, something about it tickling his memory. His skin was equally tickled by raised hair and creeping goose pimples as the lack of a source made the moan seem all the more unnatural. This superstitious apprehension was not aided by the discovery that he was stepping into the perimeter of some unearthed burial ground or something.

It was not as if corpses littered the surface, nor did the few remains look to be recent. In fact, if anything, they looked bleached and ancient. Some bones were lying free on the surface, where others were clearly still connected to complimentary skeletal structures still hidden beneath the sand. But as he traversed this "bone yard" he began to perceive the location of the source getting nearer. It steadily lowered as it eventually came to rest before Eddrick's feet.

It was not recognizable to Eddrick as any bone in particular. It was small, maybe one of those forearm bones, or rather a part of one. It was broken into a length only slightly longer than a finger, but wider. The arcs and the wind appeared to have hollowed out its interior and the wind now passing through it was giving off this whistle, this moan.

Eddrick stooped, stopping to take a last look around before touching it, before lifting it, before examining it. His curiosity was immediately piqued by the fact that the whistling stopped the moment he touched it. Picking it up and looking at and through it did not reveal anything special. It was just an old, dry, bleached bone. One that just happened to whistle continuously for several bits until touched by a man that had crouched beside it for a few more, doing nothing to affect the wind in any way, but still stopping completely upon being touched, even though the touch had not moved it in any way.

A voice in the back of his mind told Eddrick that this was a sign that he should drop the thing right now and never return to this spot. He wanted to listen to that voice, but curiosity and fascination overrode his common sense. The thought of "bringing the howl" came immediately to mind. He stood up, holding the bone, which was now silent. There was something about this sudden loss of sound that made him want to keep it even more. He get this unshakable certainty that the next time the bone made a sound he would know what he was supposed to do with it.

A different sound slowly grew now though. It came from the southwest, a deep rumbling. Not deep as in below ground, but deep from heavy objects drumming the surface with a thousand of impacts. Eddrick turned to confirm his suspicions. It was not as immediately recognizable a sound as it should have been, because normally Eddrick would have been part of the source of it. It was the sound of an hundred horses and pokos moving at a fair trot across the sand. The Rahkrii Raiders were riding.

Being their strategist, Eddrick was alarmed that such a riding would occur without his prior planning. It would be one thing for a dozen or so to ride after some rumor of some unguarded cache of money or weapons; or a chance to run down rival or something. But this looked to be the entire gang. He didn't bother counting them, there was simply the "look" of the entire muster. He could at least see that all the pokos they'd acquired were present. That only happened for a full raid. Not every member of the Raiders had mounts, and pokos were able to accommodate 5 passengers in addition to the primary rider.

He stepped toward them as the stopped in a loose formation. "What's happening? Why the full ride, Talon?"

The Leader gestured behind him, and five raiders dismounted from horses where they'd been riding double, and climbed aboard the poko behind where he would sit. "The legions of Raskalarn have invaded the Hotlands."

Even though Eddrick had sensed this was coming, he still stood silent in shock. Talon continued, "Nashaki has granted a general amnesty to any that will fight against them. We aim to take advantage of that..." Then he raised his voice in a cry, rousing the riders to an eager cheer, "...as well as the opportunity to loot some weapons and armor from the battlefield!"

Eddrick could not help but grin along with the attitude sweeping through the band. He knew they'd been starting to scrape the bottom of the barrel on outfitting and supplies. Just looking at the men there, waving their fists and slapping them to their chests, he could see the ratty armor, and worn grips on their weapons; the reforged blades, and reworked saddles and bags. They were due for a windfall like this. And any in the ranks of the Nashaki troops that observed them exploiting the fallen this way, would join them, so the Nashaki authorities would not hear of it. They would prefer to lose their amnesty on their own terms, at a time of their own choosing.

No one knew exactly where they might first encounter the Legions, but the first order of business was to acquire a full stock of water and make plans. And the best place to do that was north by northeast at the Claypan. Eddrick climbed into the forward saddle and tapped the right antenna on his poko to bring it to face north, northeast.

The giant insect lurched forward. The troops were already parting to form an alley to allow him to ride on the front. Eddrick's spirits surged, as his troops roared in response to his thrust fist. "LET'S RIDE!"
