Almund is a thriving township with a dark side. With houses made from the wooden bodies of decommissioned ships, there are many opportunities here, coupled with many dangers.

Either her new friend was stark raving mad or a genuine ex-soldier from some far-away coast, apparently with a trail of blood as merit to show for the experience. The anecdote itself wasn't strange. It was when Lavana seemed to place the ordeal firmly in history that Max grew confused. A reasonable explanation would've been that the other woman had merely been more metaphorical than literal. She had to have been. Lavana was youthful in appearance for any bizarre alternative to have been reality, right? The Mixed Blood shook the thoughts away. What did she care where this woman came from and who she'd been? There was a job to be done. That had to be the priority.

Maxine followed Lavana's gesture across the tavern to the mark. He wasn't a very big man. His arms were wiry, likely from arcs of carving and hauling carcasses at the butcher's shop. Otherwise, he was just a tall and lanky man of dark eyebrow length hair. His facial features had of course been denied to her thanks to the parasitic whore sucking his face like it was the very air she breathed. Max sighed and rolled her eyes before taking the lead.

"I really do hate to break up a happy couple," Max said without much enthusiasm. "You and I need to have a little talk, Daris." The pair continued to remain pressed together in superficial passion despite the fact that one of them had been directly addressed. The prostitute even went so far as to glance sideways during the display, her eyes casting an irreverent, arrogant gaze upon the Rusalka. Their make-out became more dramatic within a trill, the prostitute clearly trying to wrestle away the prospect of his attention moving away from her in favor of the new arrivals. Max reached forward and forcibly yanked the whore by the hair away from the man. It was quite a scene between the way the woman was unceremoniously dismounted from a lap to the floor, breasts flying out of her ill-fitting clothing for all to see. Max nearly felt bad. Nearly.

"Like I was saying," Max continued, her attention having never left the man even when the whore cursed her as she rushed to cover her chest. "I have some questions for you. You know my friend here already." Max thumbed toward Lavana with a neutral expression. There was no downplaying the intensity of Daris's displeasure. He wiped his lips with the back of his hand, a distinct vein popping from his forehead.
"Ya've got quite t' nerve," Daris spat and crossed his arms. "Sard off, yeah?"

By now the whore had discovered that the exposure of her bosom had actually granted her more attention than ever before. She traded up for a new lap seat at the man bar and all seemed quickly forgotten. Max invaded Daris's space with a lean, bracing the heels of her palms upon the table while she loomed over him where he sat at the table.

"I'm feeling generous today, so I'm going to make you an offer I don't usually make," Max suggested. "I'm giving you the rare chance to change your mind. Reconsider your attitude." Then she reached into her pocket and procured the carving knife from the crime scene. She turned the handle so that the brand of the butcher's shop was clearly visible. "Lose this last night?" All the color drained from the man's face. He stared up at Lavana and Max with wide eyes.
"Look," he said with a low voice. "I--I'll tell it all. All of it! Just let me fill me mug, yeah?" Daris was shaking like a leaf when he carefully rose from his chair. He slowly began to make his way to the bar. Max stood up straight and turned to Lavana with a shrug. Yet, not a trill after she turned her back on his, Daris changed his route and made a mad dash for the door. The sound of his footsteps sent the Rusalka spinning and cursing, before she inevitably took off after him.

She ran after him around the corner, across the street, and through an odd maze of alleyways before the realized something was very, very wrong. She skid to a stop when Daris inexplicably did. Her caramel eyes darted around the alleyway, only to find it was a section of the town that was more on the abandoned side. Doors and windows were boarded. No voices carried from the houses that corralled them within the narrow passage. Daris turned to face her just as another man appeared at his side to ward off her quick advance.

Shit.

Max took a few steps back and looked over her shoulder. Sure enough, another pair of bruisers had manifested to block a hasty escape. She pursed her lips and balled her fists at her sides. If Lavana had been just as quick on her feet to race with Max through the streets after Daris, the pair had together found themselves very trapped indeed. "I take all that back," Max mused quietly. "I guess you did dress for the occasion, Lavana."

Lavana was quick to take notes of her friends actions studying her demeanor and attitude. How she approached Daris was much like shed approached her in the butcher shop there was a correlation in how she handled herself as studied her mannerisms.

There were no objections as she tore the whore off the man, and her cleavage slipped out her blouse in the process. Its not like it was anything special, Lavana would of wagered some coins that most of the patrons had already seen her wares at one time or another.

She stood stoic behind Max, adamant in composure as she straightened her posture. The mortal born child was Raskalarns greatest failure and she owned it rather then let her mothers words destroy her she would find strength and salvation with discipline her hysteria a tool to be honed and weaponized.

But her presence and stance was clear and decisive it said dont fuck with Max as she put herself between the patrons while she interrogated Daris.

As expected a white knight stood up in protest clamoring for the moral high ground thinking hed get laid by trying to interfere with Maxs work "Aye, if you thinkin bout stickin that slut pay your dues like everyone else, cause ill slide my dues down your throat and choke you out."hand rested on the hilt of her dagger to let him know that her dues would leave him floundering about like a fish out of water. She took charge of her guardianship"Bet mine is bigger, let your balls drop and pull yours out make me swoon mother fucker" Lavana deciding to humiliate him infront of his peers for trying to be -That Guy- . Lavana liked to use humor so his drunk and half cocked peers would laugh and chortle at him that kind of playful banter had a charming way of sucking the fire out his loins as he sat back down like a bottom bitch "Aye, prolly sits down while he takes a piss too." shed keep her Amber eyes fixated on his cowing him bullying until he looked away shamed and demoralized by her ruthless hazing as his friends started leaning in on him."See look. Should have paid her now your at the back of the line" as she motioned her head towards the courtesan.

Of course before she got a chance to see what happened on the negotiation table she saw Max scrambling towards the door. So she was quick to follow in pursuit, she didnt have the ability to sprint a marathon but she had balance and a little endurance to see herself traversing the rat maze shortly behind Max until they reached the climatic moment when the men had arrived.

Shed drawn her bronze claymore ready for a fight only to realize the space was to cramped to wield it in normal fashion. Lavana did know to slide her grip and hold the weapon in traditional armored combat fasion, upside down the angled cross guard conformed into an elegantly brutal hammer the ends were met with a triangle comprised of three circles like bronze knuckles but worse heavy and thin enough to crush but also penetrate bone it was another make shift skull crushing tool to thwart enemies in plate.

Without much wiggle room the soiree of blood and violence had begun and the mortal born was happy to have Max as her dance partner under the stars and moons it might not have been lavished with frill and luxury but she would treasure this waltz. "I Told you so, bitch! These friends of yours?" Lavana cracked a snarky compliment "Naturally im dressed to impress, but lets face it your the life of the party" Lavana was dealing with two brutes but thankfully the alleyway was cramped and confined. The boys cant keep there hands off you huh?

She was a good judge of distance and a chopping stroke came at her from a long sword she flinched not having faith in her gear but her unarmed block shielded her from being cut down the bronze squeeling as the metal scarred from the slash as it dragged to no avail on her forearm. Shed opened him up however as she speared him driving her blades tip into his chest as gauntlets wrapped around the cutting edges she twisted with minor strength as she tried to pry bone and bore him. Lavana would pull back and as the man clenched his chest tucking in and leaning forward lurching in shock from being gored, it allowed her handle cocked and ready to come down on the back of his skull like a war hammer. Its wrath was nothing short of perturbing as the loops bit in driving like a blunt pick fracturing with blunt force trauma as she put her body into with the resolve to kill the man.

Lavanas force was enough to damage the guy severly yes perhaps even mortally wound, however it was not enough to vanquish him cleanly. He was clearly badly damaged as he struggled to open his eyes his nerves misfiring as he twitched and kivered. Only to gaze upon a bronze sabaton to come down on his face in final judgement the back of his skull crumpling on the cobblestone, and while Lavana was not a trained force in martial arts a bronze wrapped heel with the force of a strong leg would be enough to finish the job.

Lavana savored the thrill of combat as she indulged her blood lust and the diri sung there praises in hushed lulls that tapped her vein like poppy her crazed amber eyes thirsted for more on the field of war but crazed maniacle laughter after that crunch under her boot tickled her fancy "Watch where you walk girl, i just stepped in shit"

It was enough to send the second brute reeling back as he turned and ran; his cheap dagger not enough to muster the courage to challenge a ruthless savage with a broadsword, seeing his friend be butchered like cattle in cold blood as she laughed about it like it was the funniest shit shed ever sern was enough to make him tuck tail and run.

She turned to look at Max and see how her mercenary friend was handling herself. Before putting her attention back on the corridor. Raskalarns greatest failure had Maxs back figuratively and metaphorically speaking. "One of them shit there pants, and ran home to cry to mommy. Wont be surprised if he comes back, but he could be hiding under his bed. I dont want to chance it we need to move and get out of here" As she tried to assess the tactical advantage of his retreat, there was an unknowing there was he doing the running to get away or getting reinforcements. "How you doing back there?" Lavana was kickin shit off her metal boot as she asked.

The Butcher's Cut

Just like that the entire mood had changed. Max and Lavana had quickly been shifted out of their positions of power over Daris, and like any brutes, their new enemies sought to solve their beef with violence. The Rusalka balled her fists. These women would certainly oblige them. Stress hormones had already started to flood Max's system. The irony of being cornered by the attempted murder suspect in an alley like the last victim wasn't lost on her. If another shiv found its target, it was going to be after a memorable struggle.

While Lavana alternated between swinging her sword and making quips from behind, Max was far more focused on the bodies in front of her. She hadn't the luxury of properly preparing herself by the time Daris's ally approached. The bulky man started his attack like any tavern brawler. He threw his fist out with a grunt, but his dramatic broadcast gave Max plenty of time to bob beneath it and return with a solid strike to his solar plexus. His body involuntarily leaned forward, and it was enough to bring his chin down low enough for her to hurl a quick uppercut into it. The brute stumbled back, but it wasn't the because of the jarring force of her strike. Blood had poured out from between his lips, and when he opened his mouth with a panicked look, it became evident that she'd managed to make him bite a chunk of his own tongue off. Their mutual surprise distracted Max long enough that she almost didn't notice Daris rushing her from behind until it was too late.

The butcher's assistant had reached into her pocket to recover his lost carving knife from her possession. Feeling his sudden touch, Max rotated with a huge step back. She was a half trill too late. The carving knife drew along the short width of her torso, slicing through her shirt to open a superficial wound upon her flesh. Now it was her turn to eye her own wound with surprise. The blood trickled through the small opening in her shirt, staining the area of cloth around the cut. There was no time to meditate on her mistake though. Daris was already moving for a knife-jab. She had to react and finish this. Quickly.

Max pivoted off center to avoid the second attack while she pulled her blade free. When the third jab for her came, Max rewarded the attempt on her life with the edge of her sword meeting the hand that held the weapon. Daris howled, dropping the knife and grasping his mangled, half-severed hand. His companion had recovered and approached to aid his ally. He scooped up the carving knife and ran toward Max to attempt a high, sweeping cleave toward the top of her skull. The Rusalka managed to narrowly avoid death with a side step and buried her short sword in the man's back. A bloody gurgle erupted from the brute's lips and his body seemed to gently quake. Max gave her sword a vicious twist and planted her foot in his back. With a harsh shove, her weapon was once again freed from its fleshy sheath and the brute subsequently began to crumple down upon the ground. Her chest rose and fell as she turned her attention to the moaning Daris, mind slowly beginning to fix on Lavana's words now that the combat had seemed to at least temporarily conclude.

"Agreed," Max said in a stone-cold voice, dark eyes fixated on her doomed suspect. "Leave the bodies here for the worms." Her free hand eased down so her fingertips might gently dab at her minor wound, reassuring herself of its lack of depth. Her jaw clenched.
"P-please!" Daris implored from his knees while he clutched his mangled limb. "Lemme be! Lemme be! I'll tell nobody! Ain't no one gotta know!" Max stood before him with a grim expression. Surely the son of the attacked man would want his justice, and for that justice he'd likely pay her handsomely. It was coin she desperately needed. Max whipped the edge of her sword against Daris's middle in roughly the same place he had cut her. His jaw unhinged and his eyes slowly lowered to look down at himself. She'd left him not with a surface wound, but the one he'd originally intended for her. His guts spilled from the wound like a length of red-dyed ropes onto the ground of the alleyway. He slumped back against the nearby wall, hands hovering over the mess helplessly.

"Congratulations, Lavana," Max spoke while she set to quickly cleaning her sword and sheathing it again. "You've just been promoted." She turned to survey the bloody scene for the last time as wind whipped about them in the eerie quiet. With the one brute still clutching the serial stabbing weapon in his cooling hand, perhaps one would chalk the whole thing up to justice served. The Rusalka set her sights on Lavana. "Speak of this to anyone and my face will be the last you see."

Lavana took notice of the exchange of words spoken behind her between Daris and Max. She understood what she sacraficed, as she carved the innards out him like she was gutting a deer. Part of her couldnt contain her excitment it was what shed always wanted as her amber eyes swept across the horrendous scene, atrocious to some but serenely breath taking in her minds eye. Max was nothing short of a fucking artist with fisticuffs and steel, as she drank in the shear carnage.

Her breaths unsteady exhilarated with adrenaline and thrilling tremble, you could see it in her eyes as she smiled. Lavana wanted more like a glutton. as Max told her never to tell a word an she would oblige; this was there secret.

But then something had changed the atmosphere ruined the ambiance of savage violence. As the situation settled and she processed it, her expression immediately returned to one of concern.

"I.... Max... " Lavana looked away"Th, thank... but no, no I dont, why did? You had it all, the money it was yours isnt that what you needed?" She was confused and couldn't figure the right words in that moment to articulate her thoughts and feelings. Lavana had mixed thoughts about Maxs selflessness it was out of character, or maybe Lavana was out of touch with the rusalkas intentions or who she really was beneath that hardened exterior.

Lavana noticed the wound seeping scarlet through torn fabric. It was superficial only on the outside, shed been cut and chose to help Lavana have her dream instead of coins. And the mortal born had understood the value of this as Lavana hand moved towards the area as if to desperately want to address it, and backed off.

"Your bleeding, I have a first aid kit back home. Bandages and anticeptic maybe pain killers. I know its not much, but id feel better knowing the wound is dressed, and we were tucked away till this blows over."

Lavana was no longer quipping or making jokes, her tone was genuine and sincere concerned as she implored the rusalka to listen to reason.

"Listen I dont want to have sleepless nights wondering if you got cornered by those guys, for what you did for me. I dont want to wonder if your wound wouldnt close and you bled out.

Your gonna have to cut me ear to ear, Max.

Stay a while at least till the bleeding stops.

And you have my word, this will stay between us."

That was Lavanas word, her merit.

Max shrugged, turned, and spat on the corpse of the disemboweled man. "Yeah, well," she trailed off and never voiced the self-destructive explanation. It was always blood for blood. In the long term she'd desperately needed the coin to exchange for sustenance. However, as always, the sweet taste of short-term satisfaction had won her over in the heat of her own anger. What was just one more day of scraps anyways?

"This?" Maxine looked toward her red-oozing cut with characteristic facetiousness. "It's nothing. I can take care of myself." The excitement of the fray made her mind wander toward Merces, who was certainly wondering where'd she been by now. Her return would yield his fiery wrath. There would be no hiding even the most minor of injuries from his possessive gaze. He'd scour the town to set fire to the perpetrator, though in this case he'd likely hold scorn over the fact that this time they'd be none alive to punish.

In any case, neither she or Merces were skilled healers by any definition. Lavana's help should've been better received. The orphan just wasn't used to genuine kindness. Moreover, she wasn't used to anyone other than Merces caring enough to offer their home up as a place of sanctuary from the danger outside. Taking up Lavana's offer meant a debt. All debts had to be paid. It was always better for the street-wise woman to garner no debts at all, even if it was beneficial to her wellness.

"Watch your back, Lavana," Maxine suggested, throwing a hood up over her head and backing away toward the other side of the alley. "Cowards always come crawling back out of hiding like cockroaches. If we meet again, I'd prefer it if you weren't a corpse in the street." The Rusalka turned then and vanished into the streets.

What a thread! I enjoy your pcs relationship, how they work together. You both paint some really vivid pictures with your words and I enjoyed the way that the conversation moved - you two certainly think of things in a different way than each other! It's good, though - and I like the very strange, but obvious beginnings of a friendship. PM me if I missed anything and enjoy your rewards!
