The way he was looking at her made Yana think she had slipped up. Perhaps what she had said had been too blatant an attempt to mimic his style of constructing arguments –or what had to represent those—and he’d seen right through it. Perhaps it was something else, like her way of emoting or a subtle hint at her true feelings on the matter shining through her tone of voice.

As long as he took a swing of the stout though, none of that mattered.

As long as he drank, the poison would enter his system and destroy him from the inside out in a most painful manner, so she had been told.

Whether he would connect the dots between his predicament and this meeting wasn’t a concern either, as Rayna could simply disappear and be replaced by Saeri. Though she would need the mercenary angle to get a hold of the Ne’haerians, which was exactly why she’d chosen for a poison that would act rather slowly. If the information she’d received was correct, it would take about nine trials to kill a man, with the symptoms and devastation only setting in after a couple trials had passed.

It’d be more realistic to suspect the latest meal or drink than something that happened several trials ago. Well, not that he’d live to do so.

As long as he took a swig, that is.

“I don’t see what the relevance of that question to our discussion is,” she stated, though she supposed answering him was not really all that harmful. Even should he or his goons go digging into her past, it wasn’t too likely they’d find anything about her. The description of her the military had spread around to bounty hunters upon her desertion hadn’t mentioned a lost eye. True, they had the hair color and eye color listed correctly, but Yana had deliberately changed her hair to black upon her return as a precaution. Perhaps her name could be useful, but then again, she’d never given Gangui her last name, nor did he know the spelling of it.

Finding information on her would be harder than tracking her down.

“But no, I’ve not been in the military. I was a Black Guard, once upon a time. Too much corruption though, no chance to reform it from the inside. I’d hoped to make a difference from the outside, but--” she shrugged, “—there’s not much one can do on their own. Except for hunting down the crooks that deserve punishment.”

She eyed the wanted poster she’d placed next to her on the counter. “Though with the amount of posters that are part of a larger cover-up, there’s no telling what’s real and what’s fake.”

Yana took another swig of her stout, letting the bitter taste of the frothy liquid fill her mouth.

He continued on with his rants though, speaking more about depravity, liberty and what have you. Even Good and Evil were injected into the speech, probably to give his words a bit more weight.

The Turkey Commander placed his hand on her shoulder then, and Yana suppressed the urge to back up out of his reach or swat his hand away. Likewise, when he released her, the temptation to dust off the part where he’d grabbed her was great, but that too was stifled. It wasn’t the image she wanted to portray. Whether or not it’d insult him she didn’t know, but it was best not to take any chances, so she allowed him to put his paw on her body.

“Like I said,” she said, “there’s been a problem with corruption in the Guard. Many taking bribes from the wealthy or the crooked to … tie up loose ends. Wanted posters have always been easy to manipulate. Slip a fabricated order between the actual ones that go to the printer, with made-up crimes and accusations, and you’re golden. Before you know it,” she spoke, snapping her fingers, “there’s the face of an innocent man on every street, bounty and all. The Guard knows what they can and can’t get away with, so the posters are virtually identical to a real wanted poster. No way to tell if it’s fake or not. Hearing out the target doesn’t help. All criminals plead innocence. The Guard knows it’s too damn hard to figure out if a target is a criminal, yes or no, from the poster and the target’s testimony alone.” Yana frowned.

“But you seem like an honest man, Commander. I will chose to take your word for it, and hunt down this Cuckoo and bring him to justice. You’ll have him in chains, delivered at your doorstep, so a fair trial can be held.”

She nodded to herself and raised her mug to eye level, well aware Gangui had nothing but an empty goblet and a full mug of poisoned stout before him.

“To the Free Market,” she toasted.

The commander of the Sons of Justice nodded silently at Rayna’s words. Although he wasn’t entirely convinced she was a true patriot, he did accept the fact she was going to pursue the bounty on Cuckoo.

People were different and in order to lead, Gangui had to accept people for who they were. Of course this didn’t mean he accepted everyone in Idalos. It meant that he accepted anyone who at the very least resisted the Immortals and tried to do the right thing.

The diversity in the free market is what made it strong. As long as individuals understood that sometimes they could be wrong and accept that hard competition could result in losing, then it would allow the market to bring forth the greatest technology, wealth, and ideas to the wider society. Gangui believed in this and was willing to lose, because even if he was wrong he at least fought in the arena. At least he would contribute to the honing of the best mind and leaders.

Regardless of this fundamental principle of the spirit of humanity, he still believed he was right and willing to double down. He still believed that what he was trying to accomplish was the right course of action.

Rayna, however, seemed much less conscientious of the cultural and spiritual battle occurring in Etzos.

“To the Free Market!”

The turkey commander announced loudly before drinking the glass of stout in its entirety all in one fluid motion. The whole room looked at him do this. He had drunken ale with Rayna, thus establishing publicly her acceptance into the patriot pub.

“There are only two ways to drink stout under the roof of Nalods,” Gangui bellowed, the froth dripping from his mustache, “Either in great draughts or not at all.” He slammed the empty glass down and seemed to laugh at Rayna through the windows of his soul. He prayed she would continue down the patriotic path.

Getting ready to leave, Gangui waved at One-eyes Rayna with a crazy look on his face, “Better not see you on the other side of battlefield!” Though the bar was more accepting of Reyna from sharing drink with the Turkeys, Gangui left her with a final thought that he didn’t think she was loyal.

It was all going according to plan. Gangui accepted the toast, finally grabbing hold of the poisoned mug of stout. He poured it down his gullet, unaware of the deadly trap he had just sprung. Yana finished her own mug as well, wiping the froth of her lips when she placed the mug back on the counter. The way everyone in the pub seemed to be watching them was slightly unnerving, the Yludih found, though she paid it little further mind. The pub’s customs and its patrons’ strange convictions on the meaning of drinking ale did not matter one bit to her. Her deception would be considered a great betrayal, no doubt, but by the time they would find out about it, she’d be long gone.

She watched Gangui leave the tavern, considering the words he’d left her with. For just a moment her mouth curved into a smile. He did not have to worry about that at all. She had no intention to become more involved in this conflict between the mad mustachio and the feathered fiend.

Only after she’d finished the remainder of the stout did she leave the pub as well, heading for the room she stayed in. Soon enough the Sons of Justice would lose their commander, and Yana would gain an extra three-hundred gold nel. Not to mention that the people at the pub seemed to have accepted her as one of their own now, so she could potentially try to glean new information out of them. There was still the matter of the Ne’haerians after all.
Poison
Pig Squeal

Pig Squeal (sometimes also called Hog Squeal) is a relatively slow-acting poison named for the pained screams erupting from the victim in the later stages. These infernal screams are often likend to those of a pig that's being slaughtered and are typical for this particular poison. Historically, this poison had been used by those that wanted their victim to suffer a slow and horrible death. It's alternate use was to cripple the target rather than assassinate them, as the victim often only starts screaming during the mid to later parts of stage 3, and the window for administering the antidote without the poisoned suffering lasting complications has shrunk considerably.

The poison originates from the Bristle Beard, a lichen found in humid areas or areas with a wet climate. In the wild, Bristle Beard uses poison to deter small animals from eating it, by quickly yet temporarily paralyzing the jaw of the unfortunate critter. When eaten, the lichen pierces the soft tissue inside the oral cavity, which injects the poison directly into the mandibular muscles. For humanoid creatures, the poison is mostly harmless, though it might cause a slight prickling sensation. However, when concentrated, purified, and modified, the Bristle Beard’s natural toxins become a deadly poison.

Pig Squeal is most commonly used as an ingested poison, though it could be injected in the target as it does in nature. Curiously, though poisoning through intramuscular injection causes effects within minutes, it rarely has affected the entire body, instead paralyzing the muscle group it was injected in. Naturally, for use as an injected poison, the Bristle Beard’s toxins needn’t be modified to activate upon contact with digestive fluids.

Sometimes Pig Squeal is used as a contact poison which soaks in the skin and is quickly absorbed into the bloodstream. Though the liquid itself is odorless and colorless, it causes an itching rash on the location of contact a couple dozen minutes later.

The ingested version is odorless and colorless like the contact variant, though has a slightly bitter taste to it, which can make it difficult when mixed in too small volumes of beverages, or too small amounts of food.

Stages

Stage 1: contact
Though the poison takes a while to bear its fangs so to speak, it is already working its magic the moment it is brought into the gastro-intestinal system of the target. A couple hours after entering the body, the victim starts feeling a little under the weather, often but not always accompanied by a slight rise in body temperature. Several hours later, the victim will experience slight soreness in their muscles, most notably in the neck and shoulders.

Stage 2: flu
Usually 24 to 48 hours after the introduction into the victim’s system, the victim starts experiencing flu-like symptoms. They are feverish and nauseous, often suffering from headaches and pain in their muscles, as well as shivering as if hypothermic despite having a fever and feeling hot to the touch. Often the poisoned individual might complain about being cold. The victims are fatigued and feel weak and lethargic. During this stage, the muscle- and headaches will gradually worsen until the victim reaches stage 3.

Stage 3: squealing
About 60 to 72 hours after stage 2, stage 3 rolls around. The flu symptoms are still there, though the shivering has stopped. This is a result of the poison’s actual target: the muscles. During stage 3, the victim experiences severe muscle cramps as their body gradually tenses up more and more beyond their control. Though early on in stage 3 they are still able to move with enough effort, their pain worsens if they try, and it feels as if their body is tearing itself apart. Muscle spasms are not uncommon during this stage, though they tend to disappear the further stage 3 progresses. By further progressing through stage 3, the victim will begin to gradually experience greater and greater pains, and their body will tense up and cramp more and more, and moving will become more and more difficult. In this stage the victim usually begins to scream when the pain becomes too much for them to ignore or resist. To those with some knowledge of poisons or medicine, the characteristic screams, spasms, and muscle tension of stage 3 are a dead giveaway of a Pig Squeal poisoning.

Stage 4: death
Some consider stage 4 to be part of stage 3, though because of the differences between this stage and the previous, others think of this one as a separate stage. The moment the victim’s breathing becomes too labored to provide enough oxygen to continue screaming is the moment many consider stage 4 to begin. This usually occurs around 96 hours after stage 3 has started. From this moment on the non-voluntary muscles, and the heart, quickly become immobilized. Often the victim might already have choked to death before this happens though. Should the victim be kept alive by breathing apparatus or mouth to mouth, after they can no longer breathe on their own, the heart will stop a couple hours later. Stage 4 usually doesn’t last longer than 4 hours, but has been stretched to 6 when the choking was averted.

Contact poison variant
This form works faster because the poison is almost directly absorbed into the bloodstream (which facilitates it spreading through the body), and doesn’t need to be activated by the digestive system. Because of this, stage 1 is skipped and stage 2 takes about 1/3rd the time it usually would. Except for the rashes which from a couple breaks later on the place of contact with the poison, the contact version of Pig Squeal works exactly the same as the standard version for stage 3 and 4.

To alter the standard version into the contact version, the user needs to have sufficient skill in chemistry or alchemy (expert). The contact variant is more expensive than the regular version.

Antidote
The antidote must be taken before the victim is almost fully immobilized or starts showing difficulties breathing during stage 3, as by that point the poisoning has usually progressed too far to heal completely. If the antidote is applied too late, the victim might still recover from the poisoning, though will often suffer from breathing and/or heart problems, partial or complete paralysis, loss of fine muscle control, Parkinson, or a combination of these effects afterwards. After a certain point the victim is too far gone for the antidote to take hold. The rule of thumb most use is that when the screaming stops, it’s definitely too late.

It must be noted that the antidote is not a miracle-cure. While it does indeed halt and undo the poisoning, it takes time to start working. Most physicians recommend injecting it in the bloodstream of the patient to ensure the quickest uptake. Still, it takes about half an hour for the antidote to indeed halt the worsening of the victim’s state, and then 2 hours before the victim’s situation starts improving. Most people take about 48 hours to recover from the poisoning, excluding the time it takes for rehab. Lingering muscle pains and general stiffness and weakness of the body is not uncommon. Lack of control over the body is a guarantee, though the severity depends on how long the poison has been affecting the victim’s body. With about 3 to 4 days of rehabilitation the poisoned is able to regain most of their muscle control, though might still experience muscle spasms after exertion or exercise, and trembling during tasks that call for fine motor skills. These effects usually do not last longer than 10 trials after recovery.

Numbers
Total time (in general) needed to kill (stop the heart): 224hours = 9 days and 8 hours
Latest possible time to apply antidote without retaining lasting injury (accounting for antidote activation time): 8 days and 13 hours
Time needed for the antidote to work (stop the progression of the poison): ½ hour
Time needed for antidote to start curing: 2 hours
Time needed for poisoning to be cured: 48 hours
Time needed for rehab: 3-4 days
Time needed to be completely back to normal after being cured (if antidote was administered on time): 10 days
Cost
-200 GN for the poison, sounds fair, I think?

15 for Gangui, 15 for Yana (rhymes with Zana!)
I really enjoyed the way you two played off each other's energies. The dialogue was easy to read and most importantly, believable. I can't tell you how many times (especially living in DC) I've heard conversations about polticis and you both really nailed it! Your chars stuck to their points and explained them so eloquently. Please, please, PLEASE keep writing and I hope this isn't the last time Yana and Gangui meet.
