The Element gave a satisfied smile as she heard her sparring partner fall to the ground. The strike has been delivered with just enough force to collapse Lavana’s legs, Sephira had taken care to blunt her attacks as this was only a friendly bout so hopefully there was no lasting damage. Sparring was more about going through the motions of a technique rather than pummeling your opponent into submission.
When Lavana spoke, Sephira gave her a sidelong glance while she began to slow her gait, although she didn’t stop; she had made that mistake last time, and she would not be making it again. Although the mage was a bit more cautious she was not prepared for her opponent to use conversation as a distraction for a well-timed kick. The woman stumbled forward, instinct taking over as she reached for the surrounding ether to tear open a Blink portal with a haphazard motion of her left hand. With only a split-trill at her disposal, Sephira focused on a pocket of ether nearest of her opponent. Using the passage into the portal as a means to regain her balance, Sephira’s exit portal snapped open with a deep boom right in front of Lavana just as she gained her footing.
The mage flew out of the glimmering crimson portal just before it closed, a steely expression of determination lay draped across her angular features. Her practice sword was in a low two handed upward sweep that was instantly caught on Lavana’s own much larger branch as soon as she attempted her first strike. The impact of the block with a larger weapon sent Sephira back a step before she pushed forward to regain the ground that she had lost. The Element focused on parrying Lavana’s strikes rather than blocking them with brute force. Her attacks were light and worked to push her opponent’s strikes away from their intended target. It took less energy to redirect an attack rather than attempting to stop it cold.
It was a sight, the two women slowly circling each other, exchanging strikes, that each managed to fend off with a fair amount of success. Sephira took a hit on the shoulder but managed to protect the more vulnerable areas of her body. Her attacks were circular and sweeping, taking advantage a lighter, curved weapon that capitalized on wicked slashing attacks. Her eyes swirled with crimson hues as Sephira’s confidence rose, her attacks gaining a well-paced acrobatic flair.
The exchange of blocks and parries lasted for only a few trills but to Sephira it felt like several bits had passed. In an attempt to end the match she followed a well-timed parry to her right with a swift spinning turn to gain some momentum before delivering a diagonal slice toward her opponent. The attack was still blunted but it carried more inertia than normal as she had paired it with acrobatics to increase the speed of the strike.
Whatever happened next would likely mean the culmination of the match. Sephira was beginning to feel the exhaustion wearing on her after the duel. At the very least the mage had been given the chance to have a bit of fun during her time off. The mage was not terribly good at enjoying herself during her downtime, she was something of a workaholic, but this was a hobby she could relish in. Thankfully her friend had been around at the time.
No matter what, Alva could always be relied upon. She was a good friend and an excellent comrade.
