Praetorum blinked in slight surprise as Balthazar flattened out the flames Prae had shot at him, forming a wall the ithecal couldn't see through. It seemed the other defier had had the same idea as him. But Prae had had it first, and he was fairly certain he would be able to land a blow before Balthazar did. Besides, Praetorum's experience was that in fighting an enemy armed with a tower shield, one had to be precise, and it was difficult to do that with a smoke screen in the way.

As Praetorum slashed at his opponent, he heard a noise, something like the tearing of cloth, only louder. Something about the sound was familiar, but nothing sprang immediately to mind. Alarmed, he called for the fire between him and Balthazar to dim, gambling that losing the surprise of his attack was worth being able to see what he was up against. The flames quickly dissipated at Prae's request, revealing...

Nothing.

Prae did not have much time to puzzle over his opponent's sudden disappearance. Before another thought could wind through his mind, something came crashing down on his head, sending Prae tumbling forwards. The ithecal let out an undignified squawk, and nearly fell before the wind caught him, pushing him back onto his feet. Whirling around, Prae raised his scythe in alarm, only to find his opponent flopped over onto the ground, seemingly spent.

How had—

A memory tickled at him, of a book dropping from thin air into his mentor's hands. "Was that... rupturing?" Prae asked, lowering his scythe. "I didn't realize you could make a... rip thingy... that could fit something as big as a person through."

Looking at Balthazar now, Praetorum thought it would probably be best to end their training here. They'd both learned from each other, he thought, and Prae was starting to feel the bad kind of soreness come on. So he slung his shield and scythe over his back, and reached out to help Balthazar up. "Good fight." Prae told him, grinning. "Let's do it again sometimes. "

43 Ashan 719
Balthazar hit Prae and didn't see much after that until he found himself laying on his back on the floor. He couldn't tell what it was when he was looking at the sky but Balthazar could tell something was wrong with his eyes. When he looked at Prae and it seemed like the man was two miles off and a lot smaller, Balthazar realized he'd overstepped. His sparring for the day was done and his vision was shot for the time being. Morgan, the woman who'd initiated Balthazar in the magic so he could smuggle drugs for her, told him of the various overstepping penalties she'd felt but she'd never experience telescoping sight and so Balthazar had little idea what was going on.

He held his left hand up in front of his face and moved it closer then further away to see if he'd recognize the distance but even such a simple gesture felt warped. It was an incredibly odd feeling because Balthazar's sixth sense told him exactly where the hand was and he understood it, but his eyes told him it was far away and his brain struggled to reconcile the mixed messages. Prae came over and expressed his surprise. Balthazar stood slowly and groaned.

"It was. I'd seen my mentor do it before and figure it would work... but she had more practice than I and... well I'm glad we are ending here." Balthazar summarized as he held and hand out to give a parting shake. "All the same it was an honor to spar with you. I'd be glad to do it again sometime."

I don't think I've reviewed a pair of PCs fighting with magic before. It was interesting to say the least and I liked how the both of you used your magical abilities. Above all, I appreciated that you were fighting for a reason since fights with no purpose are usually a bore. One suggestion I had was that I read that defiers typically don't like using defiance against other defiers. I think the future fights you two have could be spiced up by implementing this bit of lore, but by no means is it required. In particular I like how you played to your skill level and didn't go wild. Enjoy your rewards!
