"I will 'ave you know," Vega said with a grin which showed that she knew she was talking rot, "that there's no such thing as a bad teacher, only a bad student. I'm sure that's what I heard, somewhere," she had not been a good teacher - still wasn't - but that was fine. A little gentle teasing between them was something she was comfortable with - and it would tell Arlo a lot about her feelings that Darius was a good bloke, too.
Did they need helping getting themselves settled? Vega glanced at Arlo and considered it. "We've got it down to a pretty fine art," she said. "But help is always welcome," She had her bag and her backpack, and Arlo had the same. "Do you have like a central area with a fire? We'll set up our own, but if you want help with cookin', well, he's the best chef in Idalos," she said and nodded. "An' no, I'm not biased. He's as good as that Cally's place. We went there." That had been quite an evening, she recalled. They'd agreed to buy a boat, seen a ghost and eaten good food. "I can't cook, but I'm happy to play a tune or two." Her fiddle, which hung on her side like a strange sword was something she was quite well known for and, even though Darius had been in Storm's Edge only a short time, it was a commonly stated fact there that Vega's fiddle playing made things easier.
"I reckon," she said, looking about, "If we set up over there? We can get the camp set up in a half-break," she had developed a real knack for setting up camps and, as was fairly usual with her, she was feeling competitive. "Want a race, Arlo Creede?" She felt comfortable asking that, of course, because Darius had offered to help and so they wouldn't be racing. "If you're happy to help, it'll be quicker still. My cousins have the other rowboat, which they'll bring ashore the majority of the stuff with over the next few trials. We've got everythin' we need for a temporary camp with us."
Looking between the two of them, Vega tried to gauge both men's reaction. "So, if we set up our camp, an' if you'll show us where, Darius, that'll be great. We'd normally get cookin' then, but if there's somewhere that we can help with that, he can work wonders an' I can peel veggies," it wasn't far from the truth. "What do you both think?"
With both men happy with it, Vega would be very happy to put up a windbreak where he showed them. She picked a spot, making sure that it was appropriate for them and got started. Once they were done here, Vega figured, she and Arlo could get themselves into Hopetoun properly and she could help him with some cooking. Also, she thought, she could play the fiddle. That always seemed to work to make people feel good and even though they'd just arrived, this was just the kind of thing that they both needed, Vega thought, to throw themselves into and get started on looking forward.
So, they got on with it.
