Give me Shelter

The arrow that she had fired landed short, and the flame flickered and extinguished quickly. The Mortalborn readied his sword and prepared himself for another attack, but to his relief Elyna’s companions killed the beast before it could reach him which allowed to focus again and gave him a moment’s respite. Soon however more of them arrived. He had never seen so many of them in one place before. When his students and he had exchanged their stories, they had never mentioned more than one or two of them. Where had they all come from?

Despite the fact that the situation seemed quite dire he did not allow himself to panic, but remained calm. He knew such behaviour to be counterproductive. He ignored the howls that rang throw the twilight and mixed with the sounds of the thunder. He ignored anything that happened outside of his blade’s reach. His world became a small circle whose edges were marked by steel and shadow. He moved his sword as fast as he could, slashed and thrust and cut. It didn’t seem to matter where he hit the creatures, he noticed, only that he hit them. They didn’t bleed, and they fell quickly. Their strength was in numbers.

A brief glance at Elyna made him realize that she was almost out of arrows, and yet the creatures still kept coming, an endless wave of teeth and claws. He paused for but a trill and allowed himself to survey the scene in front of them. A few of the arrows that had landed in the mud still burned, he noticed, but they seemed to deter the creatures little. They just moved around them. And yet it made him wonder …

"The barn!" he called out to Kit and Rafa. "Throw out all the hay bales you can find. We will hold the creatures off in the meantime." If Elyna’s arrows burned, the hay would burn as well, he thought, even more brightly, at least for a while. It would create a bigger fire, hopefully big enough to drive the creatures away and do what his sword could not.

"Do you have any arrows left?" he asked Elyna as another creature fell in front of them and disappeared. "Fire them at the hay bales. We need a proper fire to scare them away!" If it worked, he thought somewhat grimly, they might just live to see another trial.

Now that was a good idea. Kit and Rafa obeyed the strangers orders and dutifully the bales were hurled out, haphazard into the mud. The weight of them and the thud as they landed and split was enough to bring a pause from the attacking creatures. Enough to give Doran a breather as Elyna pulled open the narrow cupboard. With shaking hands she searched through the arrows shafts for the unfamiliar weight and thickness of the fire-arrows. It was with relief that she pulled two free and dropped them to her feet. Fingers closing around a third.
Without hesitation the woman stepped forward and out of the lip of the door. Hopeful that Doran would accompany her and cover her shot. The rain had started to slow and overhead there were breaks in the clouds. The high wind was moving the inclement weather on. She offered a prayer to any immortals that were listening, for the beasts to be driven back and away. Arrow on string she turned sideways on. She bent at the waist and drew back the shot. A flat shot. An earlier arrow had fallen short and she used it to light the new one.
String drawn back to her jaw. The scent of burning oil lined the back of her throat. It tickled and she wanted to cough. Wanted to wriggle her shoulders as the rain slid down the back of her neck. The shot however was more important. The arrow flew true and buried in the thick of the hay. The next arrow collected and slotted into place. She repeated her actions and movements exactly, but shot the arrow into a separate bale.
It was then that the fire started spreading slowly through the first bale. With a waft of wind it caught and flames stretched skyward with a whoosh of dried straw going up in smoke. Elyna retreated with her final arrow. It seemed the professor’s idea had worked though. The beasts screamed, furious that their path was blocked by a wall of high fire. Adrenaline beat in her veins before it fled. The cacophony of fury thinned as the beast made their retreat and the sun broke through thick clouds.
The Skyrider lent back against the wall and closed her eyes. Her heart drummed insistent in her chest and she tried to steady her breathing.
“I think we did it?”

Give me Shelter

The Mortalborn watched with bated breath as Elyna’s companions threw out the hay bales before he stepped forward with her, away from the door that had provided them with at least a small amount of protection to cover her while she fired her arrows. They were close to being overwhelmed at that point. No matter how fast he swung his borrowed sword, another creature immediately stepped forward to take the place of the one that he had killed. His arms were already beginning to hurt – he was just not used to fighting like that anymore - and his heart was beating quickly. He was not sure how long he would be able to keep it up before he broke down from sheer exhaustion.

And then a flame sailed through the air and landed in a hay bale, setting it ablaze, just as the rain started to slow down and the first sunrays broke through the clouds. For a moment he held his breath nevertheless and waited if his plan would really work or if Vri had decided that his time had finally come, after all those centuries. As the fire began to spread though he too stepped back and allowed himself to lower his blade a little and relax. The creatures were screaming in frustration since they were unable to reach them now and finally retreated one by one until the area in front of the house was as quiet and empty as it had once been, apart from the fire that would still burn for a while.

After the last beast had disappeared, to return to the shadows or perhaps seek another target that would be easier to kill, he turned to Elyna. “We did it”, he agreed with her. “We should be safe, at least until the twin suns rise again tomorrow.”

Give me Shelter

The woman peered outside the door again, smiling to see both Kit and Rafa waving back with enthusiasm. The young were so excitable. Never mind that they could have all been killed; both youths felt suitably impressed with themselves and their ability to defend the homestead. It was with a final shake of her head that Elyna shut the door to house and retreated back inside to the warmth.
“I think, I’ve never been so glad that I invited a stranger into my home,” she glanced over her shoulder at the tall man with a cautious smile.
