Another rejection. It stung. It stung because she had made her choice and she had chosen him. She had chosen to love him and accept all the pain that came with acceptance. Elyna couldn’t stand the half-life they’d existed within for so long. Funny really, she thought, that all it had taken was a quiet moment of peace. Amidst all the potential demands on their attention their quiet sway to the music had been enough. They hadn’t danced for anyone else, Elsie hadn’t been present and the rest of the world had slipped away. As though a pane of glass shattered within the Skyrider could feel the difference within. The sudden rush of thoughts that saw her draw in a deep breath of cold air.
“Go back to Vanessa’s house, with you and Ava?” She spoke without thinking before biting her tongue. Head bowed a little she lifted her thumbs, easing them beneath the shirt and touched them to the bare skin beneath. The young woman shook her head. No it wasn’t really an offer to spend the night with him. Yet it wasn’t his fault. This was a test. Elyna recognised the distance between them and the damage that time had caused. It didn’t help that her body burned with unspent passion, lit again from embers that had been smouldering for too long. His reply however, hadn’t been intended to wound and she needed to set aside her pride and disappointment. It was time to step up to her new command as Captain and the responsibilities of being a parent. Time to stop punishing Malcolm for the circumstances that he could not help.
“I’m sorry,” she admitted, “I was unfair.” The Skyrider let her hands drop from his skin and looked up at the tall man. Leaning back to do so. She struggled to contain the disappointment on her features and instead offered him a smile, “You’re right. You have an early start in the morning. Travel safe, Mal.” Somewhere deep inside she was cursing him for being sensible. Yet it was one reason that she loved him in turn. It made his rare decisions to follow her reckless abandon all the more exciting and meaningful. The young woman would be in control of her own balance and she would seek help when it was needed and above all, she would trust that this rejection was merely what it was and it didn’t mean that he was through. It was hard though. She leant forward to press a kiss to his cheek.
