Naming Trial

People became overwhelmed, she understood, and when they were overwhelmed they made decisions they might regret. What he said was right and Faith turned her gaze to Padraig. He was an anchor in this for her, his perspective clear. Yet, equally, she could not quite bring herself to think in any kind of logical manner. "They had longer to prepare than we had with Rose, Padraig." Come to that, she considered, they had longer with her as a baby than she and Padraig had with their daughter. Faith sighed and tried to make sense of what he said.

Yet, the image of the memory was clear to her. Of her mother handing her over, of the tears and how they stopped when she had been counting the money. Could it have been her father who had pressed for that? Faith did not know and she could not begin to think about it. Maybe they were so poor that the money was desperately needed, yet she did not think so. The woman in her memory, and the man, were dressed well enough, she said - not nobility, certainly, but not impoverished.

Faith frowned as she remembered more and more, making sense of the wave of memories which came in on her, one after another. "I wasn't born in Athart. I always assumed I was." Turning her gaze to him, Faith's confusion was all over her face, her body reflecting the tension she felt. "It was one of my owners, the four who trained me. He paid my mother, but then," her hand reached for his, careful of the changes in her nails from Vri's blessing. "But then, he took me to the docks, Padraig. I was on a boat for a long time." Her hand moved to her shoulder, where the oldest of her brands had been. "They didn't brand me till I got to Athart." Remembering that was not a memory she cherished, the brandings she had experienced as an adult were bad, the memory of one as a baby was quite something else.

"I think. No, I know. Padraig, I was born in Rynmere. I saw the flags and they were colours and drew my attention. I know those flags, now. I was in Andaris. It was the beginning of Saun, the very first trial. That's the day I was born." It was all making sense, and Faith sighed. She had never known her date of birth, let alone celebrated a birthday. Quickly running through every other first of Saun she had known, each one easily noted by the second sun, of course, she could work it out. "I'll be nineteen come Saun. I thought I was older."

He looked surprised when she asked about his name and Faith realised that she had made a mistake, cursing herself for her own impetuous nature. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't ask that." He recovered quickly, but she knew him better. His first reaction had been shock, and it wasn't a surprise, in truth. They'd talked about names before, after all. When she'd been accepted onto the Diploma and she'd said that her students would have nothing to call her. He hadn't offered it then, in fact he'd suggested that she chose her own name and that she made it official by going to a city employee. "We talked about this before, you were right then. I could choose a name if I want to. I don't." She'd lived with made-up names all her life, she wasn't going to add another to the list. Which, ironically, now she remembered exactly. "I never found out how to make it official. But it's fine." She was being reactionary and grabbing on to him in a way that wasn't fair, she knew.

"I wonder if I should write to the people I know in Rynmere and ask them about the name Nardovino? I mean, if I was born there, maybe they'll know someone?" He was right, she didn't and couldn't know the truth so it made sense to find out. "There are records, there, I know. What do you think?" Of course, the people in Rynmere she knew included Tristan. Lady Elyna would help her, she was sure, but then she hadn't replied to her letter. Maybe they'd moved. Aeon and Nir'wei were no longer there. Still, it was possibly the only way she'd find out, she reasoned.

Naming Trial

Their circumstances, the pregnancy, the birth of their daughter and the circumstances surrounding all of it, were far from ordinary, Padraig thought when she compared their experience to the people who might have been her parents. But ultimately he chose not to say it. Faith knew it already and didn't need reminding. Besides, he thought, it didn't change anything ultimately. She was torn and had every reason to be.

The fact that she'd been born in Rynmere though was somewhat surprising. And unsettling too. If that was the case, if her parents were still living and hadn't uprooted themselves from where they'd been at the time of her birth, then when he and Faith were in Rynmere all that time, possible they'd been there as well. Had she passed them on the streets? Interacted with them without realizing? Had he?

But when Faith apologized for asking about his name, Padraig was confused and it showed on his face. It wasn't exactly the response he'd expected. In fact, far from it? "Why are you apologizing?" he asked. "I thought you..." He paused there and frowned deeply. Had he managed to misunderstand what it was that she wanted? Was it possible that she'd only asked for the name and nothing else?

They had a long history of miscommunication, missed cues and false assumptions. But time had passed, and there was a difference now. He was more inclined to recognize the mistakes as soon as they happened. Less likely to take the approach of better luck next time, or simply assuming that it was him and him alone who'd taken the misstep.

Possible it was the case now too. But this time he wasn't going to let the opportunity pass him by to be clearer. He grinned a little and shook his head. I thought you were proposing marriage, he almost said. But then caught himself and found a different approach much more appealing. And much more from the heart as well. Completely in fact. "Faith," he said, and grinned again. "I want you to take my name. Nothing would please me more. I was simply asking in the clumsiest way that any man ever has, probably, if you'd marry me."

In time, as she sorted out the memories which were crowding her right now she'd be able to know whether she'd ever seen either of her parents in Rynmere, she explained. He hadn't said it, but they'd both thought the same thing, apparently at the same time. If her parents still lived, if they had not moved then Faith might have curtsied to them in the seamstress' shop where she had worked. Had they come to the undertaker where she had worked before? She couldn't tell right now, it was all too much and she was too focused on the childhood which had suddenly appeared in front of her. Her smile was half hearted and tired when she quipped, "If it turns out that my mother is one of those women with the bald dogs in bags, I am going to cry predetermination, Padraig. Science out of the window, it's time to start flinging bones in the air and deciding what to eat based on the shape of the clouds."

The more that she thought of it, the more Faith knew that Faith Nardovino was not who she was. It was who she could have been, it was what she needed to remember, to understand. It was her past, and she was free from it. From them.

Why was she apologising? "Because I didn't think through the practicalities, that's why. If I suddenly sprout your family name, that could have implications for your job." It was what they'd agreed and she knew that they both felt it was the safest thing to do. But then, he'd thought that she what? Faith frowned curiously and despite the moment smiled as she looked up at him. "What did you think?"

They were miscommunicating about something, she was sure of it. They had spent a long time doing it regularly and she'd grown to recognise the signs of it from both of them. What it was, she wasn't sure until Padraig spoke her name and then explained. He wanted her to have his name and was asking her to marry him? To marry, get married, be married? He'd thought that was what she was asking, she realised with sudden clarity, when she'd asked to 'take his name'. When he'd said about making it official, he'd meant getting married then, she understood albeit far too late.

Would she marry him? There was no doubt what her answer was, although it seemed like a rather strange thing to do, but then it was certainly a way to make her taking his name official. She considered asking him if it was really what he wanted, though, because it certainly had not been for either of them when they spoke about it on the campaign. Lifting her head to ask, was he sure that he wanted that, the words stopped before they left her mouth, before she formed them. She didn't need to ask that. His expression told her all she needed to know there and Faith lifted her hand to his cheek. "Maybe you'll consider it a good reason to write to your grandfather? We should invite him, I'd say."

Naming Trial

The bald dogs in bags tended to be a trend embraced by a much older crowd than that, presumably, that her mother was a part of, Padraig teased. Then again, fate did have a way of throwing absurdities in their path. The truth was, he thought more seriously, she might never know. Or on the other hand, the truth might be waiting in plain sight for her to stumble across it.

But what did he think? "Not about the implications regarding my role at the university," he told her with a smile. "I already told you, I don't care a bit about those things. And besides, it's foolish to think they don't know already." By they, he meant fellow students, staffs, fellow professors. "It was the farthest thing from my mind. And still is."

But if she studied his face to try and decide if he had any doubts, she wouldn't see a single one of them there. There were none. Only love for her, hope, thoughts of the future, and anticipation. Surely she wouldn't say no. Would she? So when Faith lifted her hand to his cheek, and her eyes communicated what she hadn't yet said aloud, he smiled as relief flooded through him, and then he grinned and chuckled. "Well so long as we're being practical about it, I guess it is a good reason to write him."
