[Cally’s] Food for the Heart

Image
Nodding at Trudi and all the things she said, Kali listened with interest at the description of the foods. She’d never heard of a single meal being broken into three parts, it seemed lavish. Then again, the whole point of Cally’s was to be a bit lavish. When the waitress left, she shot Pash a wide smile as he implied that by knowing her name meant he knew her, half giggling in her reply.

"Knowing someone by name alone doesn't make you no longer strangers." Glancing up as the wine arrived she picked up the half full drink before her delicately, feeling worried the thin stem of the glass would snap in her hands as she lifted it to take a sip. The alcoholic beverage was not sweet like the World's End offering but neither was it bitter like the ale, instead it was a bright almost refreshing taste with an undercurrent of grapes that left the brunette unsure if she liked or disliked it. She took another sip before setting it down, not entirely sure how quickly the drink would affect her and not wanting a repeat of the Worlds End.

Well, not right away at least.

Listening to the bard as he continued, Kali'rial nodded as he spoke of his family. She'd remembered mostly correct, but some things were new. The huntress hasn't known about him having siblings, and the mention of his grandfather gave her cause to smile, feeling a sort of connection to the man through his words. Picking up the glass again to take a sip, the brunette looked at the sun kissed minstrel over the rim with a chuckle.

"Maybe ambush is too strong a word. Caught me...off guard." She conceded, blushing at his words that eluded to the events on The Muse and dropping her periwinkle gaze to the table as she sipped again. Putting the glass down, she turned it slowly with the tips of her fingers, watching the light catching the pale amber liquid within.

"I think you're doing a pretty good job, what with making people happy and being entertaining. Look at where we are, where you work. All those people who listen without listening to the music you play, enjoying their meals and still able to talk without being drowned out by the entertainment." Moving her hands to the shawl, Kali nervously adjusted it to sit in the centre, before resting them in her lap.

"And you've kept me..entertained." The word was innocent enough, but it was clear the Sev'ryn was playing the double meaning of words back on the Biqaj. As their food arrived, Kali laughed and shifted to sit straighter in her seat, the shawl falling off her shoulder again.

"Yes, your turn." She said looking up with a blush, before exploring the entree's visually. The layout was almost too picturesque to destroy by eating it. Picking up her fork, the young brunette selected various items on the plate and tasted them one by one with looks of surprise, followed by little sounds of delight. By the Immortals, this is amazing, she thought as she finished a mouthful, sitting back and dabbing at her mouth in a mimicry of the man before her. Picking up her wine, Kali swirled it as she waited for Pash to relay back his recounting of what she'd shared with him, taking a sip for good measure. The wine had just begun to brush the depths of her senses, like the feathery tickle of a warm breeze. She nodded at his words about leaving home and searching for her familiar, shooting him a playful pout at the serious comment.

"Hey, it's important to follow the rules and take things seriously, at least for a little while. We can't all be happy-go-lucky sailing musicians out looking for a good time." Her pout turned into a smile, shaking her head and putting down the glass again as he continued. The southerner blushed under his sudden compliments, unsure how to take them. She didn't think she was bold or brave, if she was it wouldn't have been handfuls of ten-trials before they'd spoken again. As he asked about familiars, the brunette made a curious sound in her throat and leant back on the chair, trying to think how best to start.

"Sev'ryn were once a different people, a long time ago. When Lisirra destroyed Moseke's people, the Mother was distraught. She brought us back, reconnected our souls with our bodies. Old Souls that were present at the beginning when then Plague killed us the first time. But before she brought us back, the spirits of Desnind kept us company and kept us sane in the Emea. When we came back, these spirits were somehow tied into our very being. Bonded with us. These are the Osẹ-bori, or Familiars as you know them." Leaning forward, she rested her laced hands on the table, keeping his emerald gaze with her own as she continued.

"Now when our bodies die, when we return to then cycle, our Osẹ-bori remain here and roam Idalos until our soul is reincarnated into a new body. A new person. Then, when the time comes we journey to find our Familiar and Bond with them to become whole again. We can see and speak to our Familiars, and see parts of our past lives, in here." Tapping her temple, Kali continued.

"We can also meld with them, become one through Connection, and roam the world in their body. This can be dangerous if the Familiar is killed or injured our bodies are also." Her eyes looked distant for a moment, thinking on the teaching of her Elders.

"If our Familiar dies, half of our soul will be lost in Emea forever. Not having a Familiar leaves you feeling...incomplete. Restless. The only way to find it is to journey. Somewhere along the way, our Familiar comes to us in a dream and gives us a quest. When this quest is complete, our Familiar will reveal itself and in turn, bond with us." Focusing back on Pash, the huntress smiled before picking up her wine with a small shrug.

"What's it for? It's for restoring a Sev'ryn's soul and making them whole again."

[Cally’s] Food for the Heart

If he told her to simply take the shawl off instead of having to continue to wrestle with it, could she be any more distracting than she was now? She didn’t appear inappropriately dressed, not really, so was there a particular usefulness of the item that refused to stay where it belonged? Pash didn’t understand the necessity of unnecessary things, but he kept his gaze from following the motion of her hand to the tanned skin beneath and back again, choosing instead to focus on her lovely face. He grinned at her compliments and chuckled at her admission that he had, indeed, entertained her to her liking. Pleasing her was, of course, more than just enjoyable for himself as well, just as pleasing the crowd was fun but that fun was not his only end.

They paused to sample and enjoy the plate Trudi brought to them, which had a variety Pash had not yet fully explored. It was, without saying really, all delicious. Nothing he would have ever thought to put together on his own, obviously, for his cooking skills were survivable—he wasn’t dead yet—and not quite as abysmal as, say, his handwriting. His creative talents were elsewhere, and he was more than happy to enjoy the fruits of others’ abilities when they tasted so good. The wine was also a good choice, and as Kali’rial spoke, Pash took the moment to politely refill their glasses with a grin.

The tall Biqaj followed her telling of the history of her people with interest, perhaps knowing bits from tales heard and told over the arcs of traveling, but never hearing it all pieced together into one complete tapestry of a story. That Sev’ryn were incomplete without a familiar was a strange revelation, the thought of living any amount of time not feeling whole a concept he could not understand. Like his people, it was an Immortal who formed them, but the Sev’ryn had a cyclical existence that included a mingling of souls. He began to see why Kali valued her Elders—it wasn’t just her being stubborn so much as a cultural necessity for a people who were always connected to the past while living in the present.

He had been rude in his ignorance just trials ago, and while the whole vision of where she came from and who she was didn’t make him feel guilty (again, that was a difficult emotion to trip him up with as it was already), it did give the sensitive, observant musician a better understanding of how the dark-haired huntress lived and thought underneath her lovely, tanned skin.

The idea that she would be meeting a being she already knew, well, at least her soul already knew, somewhat bordered on the intimidating, but he didn’t quite know how to articulate the way such things made him feel—it was both lovely and strange at the same time. Why did anyone need to journey or quest for that, if they both needed each other? Why wait? Why didn’t Familiars wait in Desnind for the return of their other half?

Why did he leave home? What was he doing out in the world, anyway?

Pash chuckled at his own internal musings, not at Kali, tide pool gaze briefly washing to the amber liquid in his wine glass instead of saying anything out loud. That was always his question, wasn’t it? Chewing the inside of his cheek at the revelation he looked back up to study the dark-haired huntress’ face with a shy sort of smile,

“Well, then.” The tall Biqaj considered his words just a trill longer, “An’ that’s why you’re here ’n Scalvoris—this be jus’ a part o’ your journey? Th’ first stop?”

The seafaring minstrel may have asked in a way that revealed his interest in travel. Although, that was really a given, considering his home was a sloop and he was already just as far from home as Kali was, but he was curious nonetheless. Were there other places she felt called to go? Had she dreamed as she said she would? These were stories he didn’t know, and while he felt somewhat simple in comparison, he was hungry to hear more from her lovely lips.

[Cally’s] Food for the Heart

Accepting the top up to her wine with a smile, Kali'rial sipped the freshened beverage as she sat back. The more she drank, the more she was able to pick up on the depth of flavours in the wine rather just an overall 'alcoholic' taste. Very subtly, there was the familiar light feeling almost behind her eyes as the drink began to affect her. It was much different to the sweet sunset colored one the Biqaj had bought her at Worlds End, far weaker but more of it. The brunette recognised that she didn't drink alcohol often, and as such she would need to take it slow. The benefit of the very slight intoxication though was how it washed away her nerves and let her speak freely.

Nodding as she twirled the glass in her fingers, the Sev'ryn took in the almost shy smile from the seafaring minstrel. Shy? Him? By far the opposite of what she'd experienced with the bard so far, but perhaps it was the setting they were in. Kali smiled.

"Poppa encouraged me to take the Journey, as I've been between Scalvoris and back for twenty three trials and not a single dream or pull or anything. Nothing to call to me and say 'here I am, come find me.' It's his belief that by travelling I will 'kickstart' the dreams." She laughed and shook her head with a shrug.

"It's not done a thing so far, but then...that could be my fault." Sipping her wine again, the huntress put it down and leaned forward almost as though she was about to conspire with him.

"Truth be told, I followed my feet and took the same trade routes Poppa and Nonna had taken me on all these years. That's why I'm in Scalvoris. It's...it was just supposed to be my first stop before I moved onto places I've not been before. I just..." Staring through him for a moment, she pursed her lips before sitting back and picking up the wine again, shifting her focus onto the beverage.

"Maybe I'm stalling. Maybe the idea of breaking new ground, going to unfamiliar places alone...it's a bit intimidating. I'll move on, eventually." Taking a deep breath, she shot the sailor a grin with a tilt of her glass.

"Not that you seem to have that problem. You've been traveling alone all over the place. Do you plan on leaving Scalvoris for new waters?" The young woman sipped her wine again, to cover the swirl of anxiety that gripped her at the thought of the bronzed Biqaj sailing off from the city. She shook it off, knowing full well that if he did, time would go on. The suns would still shine and the world would still move on.

Maybe though, she would struggle to move on with it.

Trudi was, when all was said and done, good at her job and so their glasses were filled, both water and wine and she was unobtrusive in the doing of such. As they lingered over their entrees, there was no sense of being rushed at all. Plates from the entree were removed and then they had just a few moments between that happening and Trudi bringing out a tray.

It had to be said, the woman walked confidently, sensually. She had the hip-sway down to the point that it was almost entirely unconsciously done and Trudi simply oozed flirty. Thus far, Pash had not succumbed, but she remained hopeful. After all, he was not the only worshipper of Zanik in the place and frankly, monogamy was boring.

"The main course for Out With the New is where it got it's name," Trudi explained as she put a plate in front of Kali'rial and then Pash. On it were the items which she described first. "These are potato gnocchi and vegetable bundles, a selection of vegetables tied together with an edible 'string'. They accompany this menu and will be brought out fresh as you need." Indeed they would, with each of the four tastes of hafrein, but Trudi hadn't quite got there yet.

"Hafrein is a traditional and very difficult to cook with meat found only on Scalvoris. It hasn't been used for a number of arcs because of it's reputation. We're pleased to present it to you in four different presentations. Each one of these four will be brought out separately, one following the other, so that you can enjoy each to the fullest. And, of course," she said with a wink to Pash and a grin at Kali, "so that you can enjoy my company for more of the evening."

And that was, in fact, what happened. Four out of the five dishes, deep fried crispy hafrein, hafrein with an apricot glaze, braised tongue of hafrein with a red wine reduction and hafrein in crisp apple cider were brought out. Each time, the serving was small but certainly added up. The gnocchi and vegetables were also kept topped up and Trudi made sure that they were comfortable. Eating this would almost certainly take them a time but each course was prepared to the same exceptional level as the last.

[Cally’s] Food for the Heart

Image
“I don’ have plans t’ go anywhere—”

Pash answered quickly—was it too quickly? could she hear the emotion behind that? he didn’t hide it; he couldn’t—his expression somewhat coy or at least conflicted. No, he was enjoying playing music at Cally’s. Scalvoris Island was interesting; there were places he wanted to explore and things he wanted to do and people he wasn’t ready to not see, Kali’rial obviously on the top of his short list. Obvious to him, anyway. He opened his mouth to say something more on the subject, but Trudi appeared again with their main course, setting out their plates and explaining each intricate detail of the meal.

“Thank y’much.” He smiled at Trudi. Why she tried so hard for the taken ones was beyond him, regardless of the Immortal they both found themselves following and admiring in life. The notch in one’s belt for such a conquest was still just that—another notch—though Pash didn’t collect those any more than he collected coin. One could, most certainly, still seduce the one they were with, regardless of time or familiarity. Once you stopped, then, yes, you were finally boring, but that was definitely a choice. He couldn’t help but play her game, though, if only because he understood it on some levels. Returning her wink, he let her go with a chuckle,“Come back ‘s often ‘s y’like, though don’ blame me if you’re bored … there’s patrons far more excitin’ than us, I’m sure.”

He’d had something to say, but for a moment, once the red-head wandered away, he leaned over his food with a grin, eyes a warm mix of lagoon blue and green in his genuine curiosity, “Did you catch our meal?”

There had to be some tasting before more conversation, though, while everything was fresh and steaming at them. Again, without saying, it was all delicious, but Pash had to mutter it out loud at least once in both languages before making use of that napkin again and finally continuing his train of thought over the wine that had warmed him as much as the food,

“Jus’ ‘cause I’ve traveled don’ mean I’ve never felt stuck.” Pash said simply, quietly, honestly, “When I left home, th’ farthest I’d been was Bayward, which ‘s less than a trial from Ne’Haer anyways. I left m’ family, m’ friends, an’ while I knew I wanted t’ go, while e’ery part o’ me was ready t’ be out seein’ an’ doin’, that didn’t mean it were easy for me. I had hard times an’ I’ve been stuck for all sorts o’ reasons—storms an’ injuries, a heartache ‘r two. Sometimes, I’ve even crawled home ‘cause I didn’t know what else t’ do. This time? Feelin’ stuck, guess what I did?”

He smiled wryly,

“Sailed here.” The tall Biqaj’s tide pool gaze traveled over her person in the unashamed, familiar way he had of admiring her looks, aware that he didn’t need to imagine all he already knew, “M’haps y’ aren’t stuck. M’haps y’ jus’ need t’ figure out what you're expectin’ out o’ where y’ are.”

Pash hadn’t sailed all the way to the edge of the world, to Scalvoris Island, with the intentions to fall into a job like playing background music here at Cally’s (he had always been a center stage sort of Biqaj, after all), to meet anyone who held his attentions so strongly as Kali (because he could have met a handful of someones instead). And yet, here he was. His plans had been … different … but the strange way life had of unraveling itself at its own pace in its own direction had caught him again and he was okay to roll with it. Very okay, honestly. Inspired and curious, he had no complaints.

“I can’t pretend t’ understand your relationship with th’ familiar you’re searchin’ for, but d’ you have t’ do everythin’ alone? ‘Cause you’re no’—” His smile was shy again. Did he mean only himself? No, surely Kali could make friends here other than just him. Was he here for her? Yes. Had she asked, he would have gladly traveled with her, too, though perhaps it was too soon for such questions. He didn’t always enjoy being alone, either, but he did enjoy her company thus far, “—alone, that is. At least ‘s far ‘s I’m concerned.”

There. He didn’t have anywhere to go as long as she didn’t, but that felt like a strange thing to say out loud, no matter how true the conviction was. For now. His interest made him uncomfortable, but not when he was with her. Perhaps later, alone, he’d struggle with these admissions and how a fancy dinner with the dark-haired Sev’ryn made him feel and how those feelings in turn made him worry and struggle. For now, though, he felt bold enough to admit things. Maybe it was the wine. Maybe it was that he knew he had to go back to work. Maybe it just was.

[Cally’s] Food for the Heart

Image
It was difficult to hold back the small smile that came to her dusky pink lips as the seafaring minstrel confirmed he wasn't planning on leaving the city just yet. Her blue eyes didn't miss the look on his face, and almost said something too, before Trudi arrived with swinging hips and plates of food. It was a beautiful spread, both delicious and almost too visually appealing to destroy by eating it. Kali caught the wink from the red head to the Biqaj with a small almost impeccable shake of her head, but it was the return wink that had the brunette pressing her lips together and glancing away to grab her wine and sip it.

She didn't understand the game the duo played, at all.

As the waitress left and Pash leaned over to talk to her, the Sev'ryn looked back at him with raised eyebrows, nodding a little with a wry smile and swallowing as she placed her wine glass back down.

"It could be one of mine. I think I'm the only one taking hafrein down at the moment, and well.." She gestured at the plates before them.

"Faith clearly knows what she's doing when it comes to cooking them!" Picking up a piece of the first serving and making a sound of delight, eyebrows drawing not in a frown, but in an expression that spoke for itself.

So. Damn. Good!

Taking her time to savour each morsel, Kali declared each thing was her favourite, or wait no that one was her new favourite. No, that one! It was all just amazing. Laughing a little at the scene herself and Pash must present with their sounds of wonder and delight, the brunette followed suit and picked up her wine, feeling the tingle behind her eyes more so than before. Was this still her first glass, or was this technically her second or third? Ah, who cared.

The sailor spoke again, now they had finished fawning over the food, blushing deeply when he looked her over in a way that made the butterflies in her tummy swirl. The man had a way without words, so to speak. Resting her glass on her lips, the young woman listened intently, before shooting him another smile and taking another drink.

"No, it's not a journey that I need to make alone as such. Poppa was probably trying to teach me some profound lesson that I'm just not getting." The wine was talking a little now, her disciplined respectful tone for her elder slipping into something a tad bitter. Biting her lower lip a little, the Sev'ryn raised an eyebrow slightly.

"Maybe he wanted me to find someone who could keep me company? Maybe that was his grand plan all along. Not sure he would be happy it's a Biqaj, but well...too bad. I'm happy it is." Kali'rial's cheeks colored again and she quickly cleared her throat to continue talking, finishing her glass of wine with a tilt of her head and another chuckle, eyes on the empty glass as she placed it down.

"This stuff is just way too easy to drink, and I think maybe it might be getting to my head, but..." Her periwinkle gaze drifted back to the bard again with a warm genuine smile.

"Thank you Pash. For Worlds End. For the other night. For this." There were other things she wanted to say, things that came from her heart and were a little confusing and maybe too soon to say. Instead, she simply smiled.

[Cally’s] Food for the Heart

Pash laughed, quietly given their surroundings and somewhat subdued, “There’s nothin’ t’ thank me for. I’m havin’ a good time on your behalf, too, y’know.”

Their time had not been a favor for someone else—it had been a mutual enjoyment of each other’s company. He chose not to comment when Kali pointed out just how much her grandfather would disapprove of his race, let alone the kind of time the pair of them were spending together. Truth be told, his own family would have preferred him to stick to familiar waters on such matters as well, though he’d never been able to comply with that social expectation of Biqaj culture. Outsiders were far too interesting to leave alone, and he was a repeat offender in terms of overstepping the boundaries his people often placed around themselves in terms of purposeful isolation. Such a pressing insistence on sticking to his own kind had been one of the many things that drove him away, that fanned the flames of his longing to sail and see for himself the wonders and the peoples of Idalos.

He had no regrets.

He’d definitely begun to overdo it on the wine, however, though he blamed it on the delicious food and equally delicious company. The seafaring minstrel glanced to his empty chair by the window, aware he’d have to go back to playing for at least a break or two once their meal was finished, then back to Kali’rial, warm and comfortable in their little bubble of enjoyable conversation, “Unfortunately, a bit o’ distrust ’s jus’ somethin’ I’ve gotten used t’ over th’ arcs as a Biqaj, but sometimes I hope I leave a decent impression in m’ wake. You’ve given me a couple o’ second chances now, eh?”

Pash grinned, teasing the dark-haired Sev’ryn with his tone about the nature of those so-called chances, though dinner together was at least a change of pace. Mostly. He hadn’t missed her brief change of tone about her grandfather, the drinking shifting tides in her ability to filter her thoughts, and the currents of deeper emotions she normally kept to herself rising to the surface,

“Truth be told, I’m no’ always entirely ’n th’ good graces o’ m’ people, o’ m’ family, neither. My folks have some deep connections t’ their clans an’ value family, value bein’ Biqaj, as a big thing—e’eryone else be an outsider an’ sometimes m’ da won’t even do business with folks because o’ who ‘r what they are. So, that’s no’ jus’ a Sev’ryn thing. I can’t say I know how m’ folks’d feel ‘bout meetin’ someone like yourself—as in, with me, no’ off th’ street—but I haven’t really cared ‘bout that in a long time. It should be what’s on th’ inside that matters, no’ where someone comes from.”

The tall Biqaj rolled his shoulders in a shrug, laying his opinions on the matter of racial differences and disapproval on the table between them. He simply could not bring his salty self to care—he’d come across so many different people in his travels and it didn’t matter who they were or where they came from in the end. It had always mattered on what moved them from the inside to make the choices they did—who they were—instead of what they looked like. It was a common mistake, really, to decide that only your kind was better, and while he held no ill will toward the Sev’ryn’s view of Biqaj any more than he held toward the Biqaj view of the world at large, he just couldn’t quite fit himself into that expectation … his insatiable hunger for people and their stories kept him from such blindness.

Changing the subject with a wry sort of grin and a bit of color rising to his cheeks, he leaned his elbows on the table, hands reaching across for hers with a softer smile, the hushed baritone of his voice somewhat conspiratory,

“So, after dessert, I gotta go back an’ play some for a break ‘r two. Didja want t’ stay an’ listen? It’s kinda’ interestin’ watchin’ th’ folks that come an’ eat here—besides us, o’ course.” He laughed again, at himself mostly, for even though he worked at Cally’s, he still often felt out of place, “Then we can, y’know, leave together?

Second chances? Kali'rial almost laughed out loud, instead sufficing for a small softly breathed chuckle. Immortal's she would give him third, fourth and fifth chances if he continued to grin at her like that, all bedroom eyes and aurora gazes.

Okay, that is enough drink for me.

Smiling still, she listened as the sailor talked of his family and their own hang ups about outsiders. His words struck true with her more that she could possibly say and as he reached for her hands, the dark haired huntress took them willingly, her tattooed thumb caressing the back of one slowly.

"As my grandmother was so very fond of saying, 'forget the others, they can go hang.'" Tilting her head with a faraway curious expression, the Sev'ryn expanded on the comment.

"That being said, she was referring to the children around the trade camp that I wanted to go play with, but that's beside the point." Laughing, she shook her head and looked down at their hands before glancing up to catch his sultry smile, heartbeat picking up at the tone of his voice. Raising an arched brow, her own smile turning a little more seductive, the huntress spoke in a softly teasing tone.

"Hang around and listen to you play whilst the townsfolk eat their fill? Sounds like a hard job, but I think I'm up for the task." Tilting her head slightly, Kali pursed her lips for a moment.

"And where exactly...would we go...together?" She almost breathed the last word instead of saying it, her own cheeks slightly flushed from the wine and the company, periwinkle gaze firmly locked on his own. Could she really last a break or two simply lounging around watching his long fingers caress the strings of his lute in a way that only he could do?

Immortal's most definitely.

[Cally’s] Food for the Heart

Pash

Overview

I love this thread and these pcs! You play Pash really well with a real depth of character. I loved his slight nervousness, his determination to do this right and how he handled Trudi. Your writing is lovely! Great dialogue and I love how you build up an atmosphere and pay attention to the small details. If you've got any questions, drop me a pm!

Overview

Such a sweet thread! I love everything about your writing in this thread ~ from the shawl that will not stay where it should to the green eyed monster rearing its head over Trudi's interruptions. Such an honest portrayal of your pc and I really enjoyed watching her as the evening progressed. You wrote the developing effects of the wine excellently and really, your writing throughout the thread was nothing short of exquisite. Any questions, drop me a pm.
