Lab rat (Doran)

Finn O'Connor
:: 21st Ymiden, 717
The alchemist had a way of making his blood boil. Perhaps it was the man's cool and controlled demeanour, or perhaps it was because Finn knew him to be right. His bluff had failed and he regretted ever stepping into the damned laboratory. His thoughts turned to Nance. Sooner or later she would know he had failed. And then, would she come to save him? It seemed unlikely.

Doran’s vicious remarks stung and Finn winced at them. He didn't know what a reagent was, but clearly it was expensive and certainly not to be wasted on someone of his standing. His shoulders drooped as his courage and bravado were melted away. Two words in particular sorted great effect. The first of them was the name Vuda, the mere sound of which sent a chill crawling down his back The second word, the word that shattered his feigned bravery completely, was the mention of guards. He feared what they'd do with him as he'd been their guest many times before and their patience thinned and wavered on every new occasion. Yet it wasn’t just the promise of brutal punishment that made him fall to his knees before Doran with his hands clasped as though in prayer. It was the thought, the horrible thought, that they might alert his terrifying sister that made him beg for mercy.

“Please don't tell the guards,” he prayed. “I'll do what you want! Just please, please don't tell them…” There no tears flowing down his cheeks, nor was his chin trembling with desperation. Yet, his voice contained a shaky, high-pitched sincerity that couldn’t be feigned. Yet, there was some deliberate theatricality as he came down on his knees and appealed to the man's morals. “I'll work for you,” he swore, “I'll clean and sort everything, I'll sweep the floor if you like… i’ll-” he stopped himself there and gawked at Doran with pleading eyes. Before the man, by favor of his blessing, was able to glean anything from him, Finn had already started to spill the story. No detail was left unmentioned as he confessed in full who had sent him and why. Yet there was one fact he glossed over. Nowhere in his tale was Nance ever mentioned, and should Doran check the story, he'd find that Finn had deliberately avoided her name and role in the tale.

“...and that's how I got here,” Finn said, “and that's the truth.” His eyes flicked over to the remaining dirty glasswork, before hungrily sliding over to the sandwich. He didn't dare ask about it, not after he'd nearly gotten himself killed. He wasn't that[/i[ thick.

Lab rat (Doran)

Doran noticed with pleasure how Finn’s shoulders drooped the instant that he mentioned Vuda. Apparently the little criminal was familiar with the Chief Adviser. He had pretty much expected him to assure him that he would work hard and never attempt to steal anything from him again. What he had not expected was for Finn to fall to his knees, clasp his hands and start to pray though. He raised an eyebrow and briefly wondered if the boy secretly begged a particular deity to have mercy on him and help him. Was there an Immortal of Thievery, Trickery and Stupidity?

He pondered the question for a few trills, and then he decided that doing so any longer would be a waste of time as it didn’t really matter. All that mattered was that the little criminal was quite willing to do what he asked of him all of a sudden. “I won’t”, he replied as Finn pleaded with him not to tell the guards. The tone of his voice was the same as before. There was nothing soft and gentle about it, although he did mean what he said. “You will find that I’m not entirely without mercy.”

He was about to raise a hand and signal the boy to stop when he gawked at him and started to list all the things that he would do for him – his behavior had finally begun to get on his nerves – but then Finn suddenly told him what had really happened. He had not expected that, at least not without him, Doran, using some of his abilities. The little criminal was full of surprises!

He did not react immediately as Finn stopped speaking, but simply looked at him for a while before he inclined his head curtly, a sign that he had acknowledged what the boy had told him. He would decide what he would do with the information – if anything – later on.

For now he simply slid the sandwich closer to Finn and told him, “Eat. You still have work to do.”

What an unexpected gem of a thread between you two. Finn and Doran are both thoughtful, interesting people, and the dialogue a mortal born has with a young boy is hilarious. Despite the rough beginning, Doran sticks it out and Finn pulls it together and you all manage to work something out. Nice.

Because of his Competency in Empathy magic, Pash exudes an aura of calm emotion that is always "on." While it's not strong enough to overcome extreme emotions and it also loses strength the more people he's around, it's still up to you how that affects your character in whatever situation we're in.
