A smile for a Penny?

Hearing someone say his name, it was a pleasure beyond anything he'd ever experienced. Not in a way that made him feel good, but a way that made him feel better, like a crushing weight was suddenly removed from him. Somebody used his name, and they used it with a smile. Then she even told him she was going to feed him. Controlling himself he tried not to let his normally stoic face tremble. An unfamiliar emotion was trying to squirm out of his core and squeeze his chest.

Following faith to the dining area he slowly got himself in check squelching the odd sensation. Letting her lead him she took him to a place where amazing smells had taken over. When she gave him a bowl and bread he looked at them, nothing he'd ever eaten had tasted so good, was he really allowed to be so blessed? Watching the woman he waited until she began to eat before he did. Then he took the first bite of the stew, the flavors and warmth overwhelming him as he tasted for the first time in his memory, real food, made not to sustain, but to fill. He couldn't help it the feeling came back, and tears welled in his eyes as she spoke, she was offering him food, and more than that, he understood she was offering to teach him, and give him a job, a concept he vaguely understood, but he knew enough to understand, she was offering him a purpose a life. Even as he ate the most delicious food that had ever passed his lips tears flowed freely down his cheeks.

When shefinally asked at the end if this was something he wanted his shoulders were trembling with effort to control the emotions ruling over him, finding himself unable to he reached out a single small hand and gave the woman a thumbs up, the Symbol she'd taught him, today to show he wanted what she was offering, he didn't think he was good at anything but for the person before him, and the people who had saved him, he was willing to try. He would learn to make food that filled you like what he was eating, that made you feel good inside when you ate it. He didn't understand much about the world but he had an inkling of a feeling that this was how things should be. He hoped he could repay the debts he was beginning to understand he had to the people who were aiding him. It washed over the apathy that normally ruled him replacing it with a maelstrom of emotions he'd long ago locked up.

Faith’s own experience with slavery has made her a calm and patient healer, and I really do like reading her in this role. Mero is a fun character who has a lot to overcome, but it’s a treasure to read when he makes little breakthroughs like this, emotionally or otherwise. Nice thread, friends.
